Review: You wouldn't believe it, but A Strangely Isolated Place has been in operation since 2008 with their fresh and provocative mix series that spans everything from techno to ambient and noise. As with all their other artists, Merrin Karras is a fascinating new talent from the undergrowth and this new LP contains all the right elements to get our taste buds going good and proper. However, Apex isn't your typical ambient album. Its spectral tones and hollow drones still contain enough movement and energy to be played out as single tracks, not as mere abstract sketches to bind an album together. The opener "Catharsis" is a perfect example of Karras' freeform kinetics, and the lead song "Apex" is perhaps the best example the artist's singular take on barren, experimental music for the mind. Excellent.
