Review: It's becoming a sort of tradition with Italian artist, Gabriele Poso, to follow-up an original album with a remixed edition. Now, having dropped his Invocation album last month, a new version, Electric Invocation, duly arrives. The parent LP eschewed song titles for mere numbers, and nothing's changed there. What has changed though, are the textures, rhythms and sounds of the tracks, with 15 fresh remixers reworking as many tunes. Highlights include Opolopo's minimal aquatic house, the hazy, rippling sheen of Atjazz Astro and the percussive weirdness of Oveous.

Review: We were first alerted to this Berlin quintet when they released the impressive 2 Feet/Kibili single last summer. Now they've returned on Agogo with a whole long player, Cranes & Carpets. It's eight tracks and its all-new material, initially composed by sax guy Johannes Schleiermacher (and inspired by his world wide travels) before being reworked by the whole ensemble. It's a brave and impressive debut that fuses tight and funky influences from Morocco and Ethiopia with crunchy analogue synths, spacey organs and effects, and fluid sax and flute lines for a sound that's all their own.

Review: David Hanke and co are back with a new album, Paradise Lost, which arrives just one short year on from their remarkable debut long player, Sidewinders. Inspired by Milton's epic poem of the same name, Hanke now presents 12 "dark, mysterious and unpredictable" cuts that in his words capture his own personal feelings of having "been to paradise and then lost it". Judging by the likes of the Dick-Tracy-with-the-shakes vibes of the title track or the fierce hip-hop assault of "Fire (featuring Aspects)", he clearly hasn't lost it at all!

Review: Mop Mop's voodoo jazz island concept undergoes a huge 15-part reconstruction process from artists vast and varied. Like the original album itself, the energy and pace flickers intemperately from euphoric steel drum emotional meltdowns (Simbad's dub of "Kamakumba") to off-beat new jazz showdowns (SoulParlor's remix of "Heritage") to crazed frenetic voodoo footwork fusion (Clap Clap's remix of "Let I Go"). Yet as disparate and disjointed as some of these sound, each reversion relates to the last with the same creative sense of subversive consistency as the original album. Review: Forge and Franck's Da Lata ensemble return with emphatic aplomb. There's some real energy behind this re-emergence, too - just listen to the thundering drum breakbeats on the opener "Um Amor A Mais" and you'll hear their newfound full force. Elsewhere we get smoky as the horns spiral reflectively on the downtempo dreamer "Places", we get all shifty and Shafty as "Monkeys And Anvils" pays homage to 70s Blacksploitation funk and we swoon madly to the Sacha Gabriel's beautiful vocals on the Latino-boogie soul shocker "The Shore". Fusing the most enduring Afro-Brazilian elements with timeless panache, this will remain on heavy rotation, guaranteed.

Review: Jerker Kluge and Florian Reidl's Hi Fly Orchestra first popped up in 2005, and ever since has quietly impressed with its breezy, occasionally summery takes on classic, swingtime-era jazz (and, on occasions, Latin jazz). This third full-length, their first since 2008, continues their explorations into Blue Note-inspired territory. There's enough variety to impress - contrast the sun-bright samba of "Sambinha" and baggy big band soul of "I Got Hop" with the intricate flutes of "Forro" and fluid "How Beautiful" - while the playing is, naturally, impeccable throughout. It's got an old-fashioned feel, all right, but that's the point; this is the sort of thing that will transport you back to a bygone age of jazz.

Review: These guys, a band who fuse jazz, funk, Latin and Italian postmodern style, hit the big time when soundtracking Woody Allen's 'To Rome With Love' movie. Although this brand new album expands on the ground claimed on their previous three albums, it really is a hugely ambitious production often featuring up to 15 musicians and paints a seductive picture of a fictitious voodoo-jazz island (possibly in the 50s). Highlights include the hypnotic "Let I Go", the steel drum lament of "Kamakumba" and the wonderfully-titled "Phantom Of the Panther".
