Review: Some experimental and interesting sounds here from Marphoi Project on Ammunition. Lulling us into a false sense of security with dramatic, rolling keys, pulsing beats and sultry instrumentals, title track "Unspoken" is a dark horse, as it gradually morphs into an altogether different beast with buckets of sub bass pressure and distorted, low slung synths. The morose, mournful tones continue in "Destiny Unfair", with its eerie, dancing strings, forceful beats and pervasive sense of unease, before it progresses into a pedal to the metal tech fest. Gnarly.
Review: Xilent goes in on the remix duties first of all with a re-rub of "Tzolkin". It's all spaced out, trance-infused synths and hollow, echoing beats in the intro, before it builds into a high-octane work out with pumping drums, chopped up vocal element and soaring synths which pull this along for the duration. Then, next up, Exorcist remixes "Last Breath" with an ominous overtone from the outset, this one pairs industrial drum rolls with dense b-line and a powerful energy, which is juxtaposed with a piano-chiming breakdown filled with lilting, twinkling melodies around the halfway point. Worth checking!
Review: Blasting out of nowhere with a series of industrial screeches, eerie sci-fi atmospherics, the title track of the Arms Race EP is a full-throttle exploration into pounding electro-infused techstep tomfoolery with a discernable dubstep influence. Next up is "Rank Dominator" - a cacophony of broken beats, stabbing synths and whirring sub bass - before "Derp" kicks in with a Feed Me-esque soundscape, punchy drums and electrifying SFX. "Night On The Ferris Wheel" is a surreal, psychedelic journey into the unknown with an ardent experimental edge.
Review: Swinging into view with an oversized suitcase full of wobbly basslines and a rucksack of spooky noises, Nova stick two fingers up to the D&B establishment with their latest single for the aptly titled Amunition Recordings. The title track itself is a fiery beast, all mangled rhythms, killer bass wobble and scattergun noises. If you were fleeing for your life from a swam of cyber-wasps set free by a shaven-headed goon in a souped-up Vauxhall Astra, this would be the soundtrack. Flipside "Geoglyph" is similarly mentally unbalanced, coming on like the mutant offspring of David Icke and a rubber-clad Doctor Who monster on heat!
Review: Following on from the slew of talent that's come out of Austria of late, Mefjus blends dark techstep with pounding neuro and buckets of dancefloor panache in a discernable Blokhe4d style manner. "Eleventh Hour", the eponymous track of the EP, is all mounting tension, gloomy industrial SFX and grating synths, punctuated by heavy, Noisia-like drum kicks and squelchy bass. The accompanying "Revulsion" is based around the taught synths, chiming cymbals, ticking beats and whomping b-lines a-plenty. Fans of Bad Taste, Vision and Neosignal - get on this, right now!
Review: Diode's "Binary" gets given the hefty remix treatment. Maize & Phlex go in with a dramatic intro dominated by epic stabs, falling into an electro-infused banger with searing SFX and bleepy synthlines aplenty. Kodin taps into a tough, techy sentiment, with pattering drums and stripped back flair. Defazed then takes over for a trance inspired trip into euphoria, with massive synths and revolting bass belches. Soulstorm channels a moodier vibe with snapping snares, whilst Kryteria provides a whomping, bass heavy version. Brainpan then completes the package with a punishing dubstep remix, which rounds things off nicely.
Review: A D&B newcomer, but one who could definitely make a big noise if these two new tunes are anything to go by. British producer Emperor gets shifty and grimy on "The Sovereign", with time-stretched snares mixing up against rising sine synths and a dirty low-end. On the title tune "Warface" however, things are kept solely for the floor thanks to some almighty kicks and a winding bassline. A must-buy if twisted D&B is your game.
Review: After a purposefully poignant bleepy computerized intro full of shimmering scales and trancey synths, "Full Cycle" drops into a filthy tear out monster with superb production skills on display - tight, punchy drums, industrial almost Noisia-esque SFX and buckets of energy. "Disorder" takes over with a post-apocalyptic intro, rather reminiscent of "Desert Orgy", swiftly falling into a neuro-infused banger with tense, pelting beats and syncopated rhythms. Grating, metallic textures add to the sense of impending doom. One for the tech heads, no question.
Review: L33 introduces us to his self-titled "Mad World" with a flurry of pelting drums, grotesquely grouchy bass and menacing subs. The world he inhabits is indeed nasty and brutish, with clipped beats, savage SFX and an industrial lacquer sprayed all over the main tune. The story continues with "Melancholia", where spaced out atmospherics are juxtaposed with a taught b-line and lacerating snares. An eerie vocal echoes amongst the shattered soundscape. Fans of dark D&B stand up - this one is for you!
Review: Three French producers with a hell of a lot of attitude unite for this double-tracker on Ammunition, led by their epic hook-up, "The Rupture". After starting off at a menacing half-step, the huge bassy kicks double time and the tune simply launches off into a disgusting tech-heavy destroyer - proper end of the night stuff. Imprintz' solo "Remain" is a little leaner, despite the heavy distortion smothered over the b-line, and works in some glacial builds and smooth swing shifts on the drums that make this another stand out.
Review: Bass heavy business prevails once more on the latest release from Ammunition Recordings. The title track from Centra's Skyline EP kicks off with a textured intro full of background noise, curious murmurings and rough, skittering breaks. The trance-like palette of sounds and shifting, jingling SFX return at various points throughout the track, whilst driving, battering drums shape the tune from below. Arguably, the b-side is where it's really at on this one; "Metropolis" sees Centra really come into his own. Metallic, percussive beats line the intro with stomach-lurching stabs and heavier-than-thou Phace-style thumps. One for fans of the heavier side of D&B, no question.
Review: Ammunition's highly anticipated "Russian Roulette" EP is finally here. Featuring a collection of extremely talented and respected artists from across Russia, including DaVIP, Paperclip, Flame, Nvader and Hectix, they deliver quality slices of thick Neurofunk Drum & Bass that will smash dancefloors the world over. Standout cut, "Freestyle" by Hectix merges D&B with fierce guitars, rap lyrics and hugely distorted synths. A true dancefloor bomb, this EP will tear up every dancehall its set loose in
