Review: It's been a while since stylish, new wave inspired French duo FKClub last appeared on our radar, delivering a three-track blast of post-punk disco on Relish way back in 2013. Happily, they're on fine form on this Astro Lab debut, with the suitably paranoid, macabre, shoegaze-influenced alternative disco of "Illuminati" leading the way. Astro Lab regular Pilooski is on hand to remix, delivering a sparse, spooky, atmospheric version that adds a horror-fixated edge and fiendish electronics to the duo's droning guitars and spine-tingling synths. Opener "Volta", a drowsy and charcoal-black exercise in Joy Division style moodiness with additional industrial synth, is also excellent.
Review: She Lies define themselves as a "disco post-punk band from Berlin". In practice, that means an atmospheric, stylish blend of darkwave, new wave, post-punk and Italo influences, with just a smidgeon of disco release. This debut EP features two original productions - the woozy, late night hedonism of "Needed You" and the chunkier, bleaker "Sickness" (which comes complete with a thunderous bassline) - plus a smart remix of the title track from the Asphodells. Messrs Weatherall and Fairplay strip back "Needed You", adding some hazy synth-strings and a little more of a psychedelic vibe to proceedings. It's not their best rework by any means, but it's still mighty impressive.
