Review: Sydney based D&B-ster Royalston continues to impress with his latest release on Bad Taste. Fans of the darker and techier side of D&B will be all over this bad boy four-track EP, so make sure you check it out. Kicking things off is the eponymous track of the EP, Sound Of The Rain, which builds from an eerie intro into a deep, meditative slab of darkness with choral elements and epic, booming bass. Things then get upbeat and retro in his remix of the vocal-driven "If That's How You Want It To Be" with chirpy beats and pumping b-line pressure. Next is a collab with Mark Berry - "House Of Mirrors" with a haunted vocal and rising tension, before last but not least "Dead Hollywood" rounds things off with iconic Royalston smashing snares, pummeling bass stabs and deft engineering. This comes highly recommended.
Review: Continuing their run of techy tear out bangers, Bad Taste bosses Blokhe4d serve up another stand out smasher of epic proportions. First up is the relentless, synth-driven, electro-infused "Blok-o-theque", which bursts out of the speakers in full force. Then there's the electro remix which takes the tempo down to a pumping gyrating dance-off, before LA Riots get their teeth into it, with fidgety beats and squelchy b-line pressure. Guttural and gutsy, pounding tech beats, whirring synths take over in "Gutter Queen". Blending the industrial, the dark and the grimey in to one, fans of Noisia, Gridlok et al, this one's for you!
Review: The first instalment of the Bad Taste compilation series hit the shops back in 2005. Featuring tracks from the likes of Noisia and Chase & Status, the compilation brought Bad Taste to the attention of the world. Now in 2010, the imprint is still going strong and their third volume in the series is set to become the hit that the previous two CDs had become.
Maldini and Vegas, who have been there from the start, remain at the helm of Bad Company UK following the departures of Fresh and dBridge who split to pursue their solo careers. At the helm, Maldini & Vegas' Bad Taste compilations have become a phenomenon with the drum and bass scene. Still as relevant and important to the scene today, Bad Taste Volume 3 showcases the underground sounds of the gritty techstep that the pair do so well together. 1o tracks of the most upfront jungle and drum and bass bring the dark dancefloor vibes of the underground to the masses. Featuring tracks from scene leaders such as Gridlok, Upbeats, Blokhe4d, Optiv, Prolix, and of course Maldini & Vegas, who deliver some exclusive cuts for the compilation, this is a perfect representation of the vibrant scene as we find it tonight. It's deep and dark feel is also peppered with the all important touch of future funk that makes this compilation so distinctively Bad Taste. With support from the album coming from stars such as Friction, DJ Marky, Pendulum and Concord Dawn, Bad Taste Volume 3 looks on course to take the underground over boad and reach the masses.
