Visiting Time - (2:11) 175 BPM
Hammer Head - (4:24) 175 BPM
Review: Would you rather have a fight with one massive tiger or 10 little knee-high tigers? This is the question Vital was asked before lockdown and, after a lot of consideration, this is his official statement on the situation: "10 Tigers", all of them scratching and biting to the sound of this hair-raising banger. Big midrange leads and punchy kicks, it's like a buzz saw going for soul. Elsewhere Vital considers if he prefers nines or vest to the tune of a gritty sandpaper funk riff on "Nines & Vests" and laments the long waiting time you have to endure since COVID-19 when visiting your mates in chokey with the absolutely toxic "Visiting Time". Last but not least he tells us all about his favourite shark on the firesome, big hoover bass finale "Hammer Head". Snappy!

Curious - (4:50) 175 BPM
Review: Baker's dozen? Baker's buzzin' more like... UK newcomer Max follows releases on Monk and Incurzion with this seriously schwifty four-tracker. "Shake It" sets the pace with its jittering riff fizzing away like a young Serum joint, it's backed by the more drone-based groaner "Master Kush", the barking badass tear-out slapper "Wentworth" and the twisted, most warped bassline of the grand finale "Curious". All killer. No filler. Shake what your mother gave you...

Mr. Champion
Mr. Champion - (4:33) 174 BPM
Trust - (4:27) 174 BPM Hot
Review: Bass Legion are back on the fast-moving train that is jump-up and once more, they've proven adept at bringing to the fore some forward-thinking sounds in that regard. Tweakz is a name we know and 'Mr Champion' - the title track to this release - is certainly a promising sign. Glitchy and with a satisfying sense of lagged out travel, this tune certainly bites hard but it does so in a fresh, unique manner. 'Trust' is step-up in sophistication and nastiness, a snappy, stepping drum line pushing up into its metallic bottom line, this one is a proper creeper.

The Underground Series: Part 2
Dutta - "Purple Punch" - (4:23) 175 BPM
Enta - "Levitate" - (4:26) 175 BPM Hot
L3mmy Dubz - "Dissonant Oscillations" - (4:25) 175 BPM
Missrepresent - "Control" - (4:08) 175 BPM
Wampa - "Ignite" - (4:23) 175 BPM
Review: This is a big compilation for Bass Legion, featuring the likes of Dutta and MISSREPRESENT on a five-track exploration of jump up D&B. Dutta is the ideal man to kick off proceedings, Purple Punch's raucous opening drums proving just that before a simple but menacingly deceived melody pumps in through undertones of synth weight. Enta's Levitate carries on the charge; eerie and unforgiving, its snarling tendrils of synth extend out into a steppy percussive line. L3mmy Dubz brings Dissonant Oscillations to the table, another eerie number that builds suspense with a cool sci-fi feel, before flipping into package of naughty distortion which effortlessly injects a feeling of movement and travel. Control is equally as pacey, MISSREPRESENT opting for a techier sound that balances out the release well, Mefjus-esque bass notes flicking each drum hit further towards the next drop. Ignite is last but not least, a piece of glitchy jump-up which perfectly balances long and short notes to add in a. bit of last minute funk that lays out beautifully over a thudding kick drum. Get this one, quick.

Review: You mad bro? You will be if you don't pick this slamdunking eight piece from man like Vital. Near album in its weight, shape and delivery, every track cuts straight to the chase with gritty, unkempt energy. "A Little Mad" kickstarts the grot engine with two tone harmonic sandpaper bass groove before we're treated to happy slapping highlights such as a frazzled rubber ball bounces of "Mucky", the rump shaking low end lurker "Imagination" and the beautifully sweary "Naughty Words". Don't get mad... There's also a clean version for the more wholesome DJs among us.

Review: Bass Legion's first V/A EP since their innovative Liquid Essentials EP last year, The Underground Series will see some of the label's heaviest regulars stretching and flexing their skills across the genres. It kicks off right here with the drum & bass edition. Highlights can be found in every track but only a fool wouldn't relinquish themselves to the trippy melting tones of Vital's warped "Breaking Barriers", Kre & Basshoven's luxury frog chorus on "Bite The Bullet" and Freek's future-flexing Original Sin-style fire up "City Of Tomorrow". And that's only half of it... Bring on the second edition!

Review: It's a powerful start to 2018 for Bass Legion as they invite south coast up-and-comer Vital over for a full flavoured five tracker. In keeping with the label's sense of experimentation and love for variety, we're given a full tour of Vital's tastes; "Switchblade" shows a knack of euphoria and melody, "A Likkle Draw" is all about the Serum-style skanky bounces, both "Sociopathic" and "Screwy" are all wild stabs and paranoia while "Gangsta Bass" closes with a sandpaper funk bassline and some brilliantly twisted percussive textures on the fills. Switching ain't easy.

Review: D&B demolition man Damage Report continues to batter down our doors on a consistent and remarkably prolific basis. Here he returns to the label he had the honour of debuting on the launch release - DeLuxe's Bass Legion. Fittingly, it's a beast of a collection... "Computer Talk" is a scratchy, angular robo-ruffneck jam, "Break Up" is a clap-happy triplet glitcher, "Disciple" strips the vibe right back to a space-aged two-step while "No No No" is pure genius in its vocal texture manipulation. Computer says yes.

Review: Having slipped some length of the leng back in December '16, Tsuki's sharp-shooting "35mm" returns in remix-form. Klay adds more funk in the drums and an extra note or two in the riff, Freek does a really cool harmonic twist on the vocal sample and ruffs up the bass like a bully with a heart of gold while "Nu Elementz" go back to the killer riff and bring it back to the fore. Not enough for you? Chow down on Tsuki's VIP you greedy gunman you. Bang bangers.

Review: One of jump-up's most prolific and unavoidable banger merchants of 2016 continues to stab his way into 2017 with this insane four-track EP for Bass Legion. "Degrading" flips and hops to a lean metallic robotic guttural funk, "Communication" is a straight-up savage session with an unruly bassline that absolutely kills on double drops. Further on we're blindsided by one of JTR's most unpredictable drops on "Let Your Body Move" while "Message" is a 3am asylum anthem with its detuned dripping tones causing serious panic in the dance. Murderous.

Vision - "Where Are You Now" - (4:34) 175 BPM
Simskai - "Space" - (5:12) 175 BPM
Review: Flipping the switch and easing into the new year with subversive style, heavyweight dancefloor imprint Bass Legion let loose with a collection of deeper, liquid sounds you might not expect from their usually uncompromising acts. Serious moments of delicate and imaginative music abound as Tsuki plays a restrained piano number, Metal Work goes on a Total Science style space funk step odyssey and Dutta delivers a wondrous filtered hazy roller that wouldn't have gone amiss on Hospital 15 years ago. Rounding up the deep concept in style Vision takes us to the stars on a Maduk style trip while Simskai gets freak on a slippery synth disco trip. A well-executed concept; more labels should take a leaf out of Bass Legion's book and get their artists exploring other styles.

Bad - (4:26) 175 BPM
Review: Tsuki isn't messing around this month. Not content with shooting two ludicrous hurters on Bulletproof, he also makes his debut on Bass Legion with this firing four-tracker. "35mm" balances a spiked-out riff with some delicate piano strokes, "Watermelon" kicks with a blunt, Tyke-style riff while "Truth Or Dare" is all about the sinewy stabby riff that turns itself inside out midway. Finally "Bad" shows off the young UK producer's more restrained side with a purring sub that sets the scene for another sharp, jumpy riff. In other news - writing reviews of jump up records while severely hungover is not the one. WHO KNEW?

His fourth XXXL EP of the year (following dispatches on Young Guns, Stickybass and Clawhammer), this one hits the target once again and it comes via Deluxe's Bass Legion. Highlights include the deft switch between jazz bliss and guttural bass on "Ignorant", the incisive lyrical snapshot of "Tricks", the shivering piano and classic references of "Sweet Dreams" and the razor sharp sample chops and mischievous bass rips on "Oddball".
