Review: Fire up the furnace, it's Furniss... And he's laying down the scorchio sonics like nobody's business on Basslayerz right here. Following releases on the likes of Formation, Prototype and DNB Allstars, here he lays down two more brutal bust-ups. 'The Future' takes the D'Lorean out for a razz and gets us all up to 88 with nothing but a swaggering beat and guttural bass. 'Bumba' takes things back to the basics a little with a rough and ready groove that wouldn't have gone amiss in Bristol back in the early 2000s. Clarty on!
Review: Nick The Lot and Amplify with MC Spyda and Blacks on mic duties... It's safe to say that Basslayerz are going in HARD on this talent-packed collection. Two cuts, two versions, four reasons to turns your bass face inside out, both 'Slow Jam' and 'Guns Of Navarone' are primed for peaktime damage. 'Slow Jam' is all about that gurgling, stretched out bass and twisted sense of tension while 'Guns Of Navarone' hits with such gung-ho vibe you'll be singing along with Spyda before you even know the words!
Review: Slaying with the Layerz; BassLayerz roll out a brand new collection of remixes with these two savage reboot renditions from the likes of Nu Elementz and DisKrete. 'Feeling High' takes us back to 2020 but Nu Elementz bring much more of a wonky, warm twist to the surreal bassline. Meanwhile DisKrete returns the favour with his own take on Magenta's 'Adventure'. Originally released in 2022, this new update is given a whole new refit with a range of grotty, springy sounds and more of a swing on the groove. A remix you could set your watch by.
Review: Disrupta and Spyda... Now there's a solid partnership you can set your watch by. But don't hang around because they're not hanging around for a conversation - 'No Chat' is a straight up shredder with Spyda's vocals pitched right down to demonic levels. 'Come In' sees Disrupta rolling solo on an infectious stripped-back face-melting flex. Grizzly!
Review: Welshman Bennie is absolutely firing out the releases this month with releases on the likes of Boom 93, Beats Bass Life and now Basslayerz with this hectic heap of peaktime face-melters and floor burners. 'Hijack' sets the tone and vibe with its unkempt funk while 'Ascension' hits hard with one of the best build-ups Bennie has created so far. Elsewhere the inimitable Spyda joins the party with a wise word about about the law's long arm, 'Fallout' is all about the playful laser bass while 'Bass Talk' closes the EP on a twisted tip with plenty of sirens. Big boy business.
Review: Jappa is in this game to do serious damage to the eardrums of those who listen and this single seems like it was made with that objective in mind. The first tune, 'Keep On Movin' is clean and sparse in the drums which lends extra clarity to the bassline, an elongated expression of moodiness with a quality injection of additional bounce. 'Back To Life' strikes a similar chord but does so with more vigour, a haunting sample fills up the highs whilst a driving back end pushes the track forwards with pace and momentum. Big EP.
Review: We love a good steppy drum break, there's something about the groove which speaks to the soul in a unique way and this release, courtesy of Magenta, kicks off with a great one in the form of 'Cold Blood', a roughshod, powerful piece of percussive work that underpins a starkly other-wordly bassline, one reminiscent of Souped Up stabs. The flipside is similar and is a tad more rolling, but still maintains that clarity of force so present in BassLayerz's offerings.
Review: No pain, no gain. "No Hurt", no shirt. That's how the saying goes and that's how a lot of people will feel when this cut from the currently unavoidable rising artist AC13. Somehow stripped back but laced with so many differently elements (minimal tech, rave stabs, jumpy bass, a honeyed vocal) this will have folk waving their tops around like helicopters. "Through The Woods" contains the same elements but this time the bass is so ice cold y'all better keep you upper clothing on. You can do what you like with your lower clothing, we're not your parents.
Review: Benny Page is a legend in the scene, and for this single he'd been joined by another legend: MC $pyda, who you'll probably know for his vocals on Pendulum's 'Tarantula'. This track is similar in a few respects: funky vibes, a big old rolling bassline and $pyda's vocals floating just above, with wicked effect. This is one of those arms-in-the-air tunes that taps into the history of reggae influence and sampling in the scene, its reminiscent of the recent Chase & Status stuff and it's definitely a style everyone can get behind. Shoutout to Page and $pyda for this one!
Review: What happens when you get the iconic broadsword vocals from MC Spyda, the cricket bat-buckling riffage of man-of-the-mo Serum and a little love for the sticky-icky? This, basically. Hookier than a fisherman's convention, vibier than a whole cinema of massaging chairs, warmer than a picnic in the oven at gas mark six, this is guaranteed to get all the G-man and G-women singing along in harmony. The first track from BassLayerz' brand new imprint, this is the way you launch a new label!
