Review: Following a trio of largely overlooked but very good EPs, Third Attempt (real name Torje Fagertun Spilde) drops an album built around the best of those quietly scintillating sets. Bookended by picturesque, ambient style interludes, Momentary Bliss works as a showcase for the Tromso-based producer's distinctive trademark sound - a loose, languid and sun-warm blend of jazz-funk instrumentation, infectious breakbeats, warming basslines, scratched-in hip-hop samples and Aim style downtempo instrumentation. It's the kind of toasty and entertaining set best suited for wavy front room dancing and blunted sessions on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon. It feels like an echo of another time, but that's no bad thing.
Review: Over the last few years, Ulf Moen has released some quietly impressive music as Boblebad, delivering EPs for Eskimo Recordings, Full Pupp and Beatservice that blur the boundaries between space disco, retro-futurist house, dub disco and Balearica. On Rund I Katene, his debut album, Moen continues in this vein, offering a very Norwegian-sounding musical fusion that's as attractive and melodious as it is atmospheric and melodious. There's plenty to savour throughout, with our picks including the hazy dub house/Scandolearic disco fusion of 'Kald Fisk', the rugged, TB-303 driven heaviness of 'Syrebad', the Lindstrom and Prins Thomas-esque 'Havdans' and the squelchy, pitched-down delight that is 'Funky Snegle'.
Review: Album #3 here from Oslo's Torje Fagertun Spilde, better (and aptly!) known as Third Attempt, following on the heels of 2020's 'World Is Too Loud' and 2021's 'Quarantine Remixes' and coming once more on Vidar Hanssen's Beatservice label. After Ninja Tune-esque opener 'Freak Out', 'The Novel Sound' takes a wander through far funkier pastures on 'Age Of Steam', 'My Girl' and 'Nu Funk' before then changing tack once more, dropping the tempo from 'Sunbeam Symphony' on out and taking us into more laidback/Balearic-ish territory. It all adds up to 46 minutes of very pleasant chilled listening that are probably best served whole.
