Illusions - (5:19) 127 BPM Hot
Sound Crazy - (6:31) 125 BPM
Ads Mood - (5:12) 83 BPM
Review: Three years on from his last outing on Red Rack'em's Bergerac label, Tommy Rawson returns to the imprint with what could be his strongest EP to date. There's a lot to love about title track 'Illusions', a squelchy, synth-heavy boogie roller that sounds like a deep house lover's take on the early-to-mid-80s works of Dayton and the BB & Q Band. Full of authentic synth sounds, unfussy drum machine beats and slick disco guitar riffs, it's a genuinely pleasing and positive track. Elsewhere, 'Sound Crazy' sees Rawson offer up a wonderfully bouncy and sunny slab of synth-sporting deep house/nu-boogie fusion, while 'Ads Mood' is a deep, pitched-down broken beat number that sounds like it would slip right into instrumental hip-hop sets. A fine EP.

Train Of Thought - (10:14) 124 BPM Hot
New August - (6:14) 125 BPM
Overthinking - (4:11) 124 BPM
Review: After taking time out during the pandemic to tutor and mentor aspiring producers, Danny Berman AKA Red Rack'em has a swathe of EPs ready to drop on his Bergerac label. The first is Overthinking, the Bristol-based producer's first solo single since 2019. Berman is undoubtedly in fine form, with epic A-side opener 'Train of Thought' offering the perfect blend of slow-build release, clicking drum machine percussion, off-kilter electronic flourishes, mangled vocal samples (look out for the nod towards his D&B roots), bursts of breakbeats and spacey synths. 'New August' is an intriguingly odd analogue house soundscape marked out by more oddball samples and MPC style production ticks, while closing cut 'Overthinking' is a beautiful blend of rising and falling synthesizer lines, sci-bass and unfussy drums.

Mortal Sin
Mortal Sin - (5:38) 130 BPM Hot
No Mercy - (4:28) 135 BPM
Body Politics - (4:11) 125 BPM
Review: With a name like Body Beat Ritual, it's no surprise that this EP takes influence from 80s ebm and industrial. That said, what's impressive about Mortal Sin is the manner in which these sources are interpreted. The title track combines doubled up Chicago thunder claps with tortured vocals and insistent but bleak stabs. "No Mercy" is even more freaked out as the New Zealand act behind the release unleash shrieks and howls over a high-paced electronic groove. On "Body Politics", the approach is more muted and it's here that they impress most. Over a throbbing, oppressive rhythm and acidic sequences, a defiant vocal creates the kind of tension that many contemporary ebm acts strive for but rarely attain.

Ex - (7:17) 121 BPM Hot
Fantasia - (7:00) 114 BPM
Grande - (6:49) 96 BPM
Review: Berlin based Jens Dohle is a classically trained multi instrumentalist - an explosive live drummer for YE:SOLAR, Munk, Hot Coins and Sado Opera. A longtime collaborator with Motor City Drum Ensemble and Noema from African Shakedown fame, in addition to cutting his teeth as a remixer for Jazzanova and 4 Hero. His first EP as James Dole provides three tracks that showcase his ability to create a strong mood. Written during a period of 'introspection' in deepest, darkest Berlin - each one tells a different story. From the soulful, emotive and spiritualist vibe of the tile track which calls to mind the work of Ron Trent or Joe Claussell, the uplifting, jazz-inflected deepness of "Fantasia" or the bittersweet slo-mo disco groove of Grande - all in all it's a fairly cohesive effort.

Place For Me/Exhalt
Place For Me - (6:06) 113 BPM Hot
Exhalt - (6:11) 120 BPM
Review: Danny Red Rack'em returns on his Bergerac imprint for more reliable deep house joints of the lo-slung variety. This can be heard on the hazy and disjointed swagger of "Place For Me" featuring a hypnotic disco bass beneath loopy vocal refains and dusty drums- all filtered to absolute perfection. There is something more straight up on second offering "Exhalt", taking its cues from the early sounds of Chicago acid house - this one is absolutely euphoric and sounds like something you may have heard loved up at one of those infamous parties under the M25 motorway, back in the day. Devoted almost solely to his own work, Danny Berman has been running Bergerac since 2010 and it has been a fine year for the label - earlier in 2017 he released his second ever full length entitled 'Self Portrait' alongside recent releases for Nsyde, Nettles and Classic.

Review: After years slaving away at house music's coalface, Red Rack'em is now big news. Given the runaway success of "Wonky Bassline Disco Banger", now seems an opportune moment for Danny Berman to release his second full-length under the alias. Predictably, Self Portrait is an assured, confident and hugely enjoyable set, effortlessly slipping between hazy house (check Rick Wade hook-up "The Music"), analogue-rich deep tech-house jams, loose, jazz-flecked workouts (the ace "Mad House"), disco-tinged fare ("Kos Mich"), and hard-to-describe weird-outs ("Sel", "You Used To Make Me Feel"). Naturally, it also includes fine versions of his 2016 anthem, and killer recent single "Tomato Pope".

Ocaj - (4:53) 118 BPM
Rhodes House - (2:21) 127 BPM
Review: British house hero now based in Berlin Red Rack 'Em returns for his always impressive Bergerac imprint with some properly deep and funky house jams on the Tomato Pope EP. Starting out with the dusty and choppy syncopations of the stomping title track, there's more quality to be found on "Ocaj" with its woozy and hilarious vocal cut ups over a slow and rusty stomp with hazy wah wah guitar. Finally "Rhodes House" does exactly what it says on the tin with this short but sweet exercise in deepness that takes its cues from the imitable Moodymann. Following up some great tracks recently for the likes of Nettles and Nsyde, Danny Berman's on a roll at the moment!

Right (All Night) - (8:15) 128 BPM
Review: After releasing a swathe of edits between 2004 and 2006, Red Rack'Em has persistently kept up an impressive output of interesting electronic music. The title track on his latest EP, "If Only The Past", plays tricks on your inner rhythm with its loose percussion, Detroit driven pads and a deep vocal injection. The bassline and the kick drum work in conjunction with an immersive bass tone, enveloping you in low-frequency hypnosis. "Alone Always" is a sluggish yet fiercely moving house jam. A well placed medley of samples, startling pads and sharp chords punctuate a penetrating beat - best suited to an early-morning, sub-level sweatbox.
