Review: Rebel MC aka Congo Natty's well received 2013 album Jungle Revolution now gets the remix treatment by the who's who of the scene. From legends to upstarts, the results are quite impressive. The man is credited as being one of the original UK junglists, setting the foundations for the sound/scene and how it has evolved since, so these guys have their work cut out for them. Highlights on here are the Dubkasm Dragon Slayer mix of "Dub Souljah " with its purist dancehall vibes, the new school representing proper dub with the Jinx In dub Steppa remix of "Nu Beginningz" and the legendary Adrian Sherwood delivering his remix of "UK All Stars In Dub ". There's a lot to get through on here. "London Dungeons Dub (Young Warrior remix - Son Of Jah Shaka)" brings more of the purist dub vibes back again, DJ Madd's remix of "Jah Warriors In Dub" is no doubt the most fierce modern vibe on here while "Nu Beginningz Dubwise (Mungos Hi Fi remix)" goes for the more smoky, low-slung vibes. It one Jah!
Review: Jungle legend Congo Natty returns with another huge single from his critically acclaimed Jungle Revolution album. Pumping with an edgy, in-your-face Prodigy-style energy, it's riddled with vibes and some killer vocal work. The remixes are just as firesome... Joker does his classic sleazy synthy g-funk thing, Benny Page gets his D&B skank on, Machinedrum returns to the original jungle source with amens galore while Serial Killaz apply their trademark reggae jungle skank factor. Warriors unite!
Review: Fresh from his #DontFreakOut mixtape, the Darqman returns with another cavalcade of fusions. "Hallucinate" says it all; crisp layers of synths twinkling and flexing over swaggering beats and groaning reese, it's all of rave's many nuances smelted down into a smoking 140 mould. "Flabbergasted" continues the theme with evocative synth lines that rise and rise like a delicately composed horror movie score while "2CI" pays respect to the hippy massive with a deeply trippy-borderline-paranoid spike-jam. Drawing to a close the south Londoner unleashes more poison with the frenetic, hornets-nest riffage of "Mosquito Bite" and the widescreen, jungle-referencing breakbeat anthemity of "Venom". Truly unique.
Review: Ninja Tune sub-label Big Dada Recordings wastes no time in following up Dobie's We Will Not Harm You LP - released 2 weeks ago - with the She Moans EP. It features a remix from Falty DL who capitalises on the jungle soundscape of Dobie's original "She Moans", stripping back the haze and adding machine gun flutter beats with triangle hits that hold on to the bassline like a bull rider exceeding the eight second count. Sweet tom and bass drums make love in "Time Is Running Out" with a subtle mention of west coast hip hop synths, while the smudgy "She's Stopped Now" runs out the EP with dissonant piano chords and deeply embedded P-Funk bass licks.
