Inner Peace
Review: The Big Fat Mama Beats crew have never seemed to slow down their barrage of new school breaks releases, with this fantastic remix drop of Nathan Green's 'Inner Peace' original being yet another beacon of how far the breaks sound can spread. The original of course focuses on dreamscaped horn melodies and calm percussion, but that's where the calmness rightfully ends. The 'Breaks' remix sends the track down a groove-inspired alley with tidy bassline work and shuffling drums to match, before the 'Bam Recordings' mix takes down a trip-hop laden road of nostalgia and euphoria. From here, the subtle bops of the 'Error State' mix and smartly worked synth lines of the halftime 'Sarosa' mix, round off this EP with a dash of style.

Beats & Pieces Vol 3 (Explicit)
Various
Review: As the year draws towards a close, it's safe to say that Big Fat Mama Beats have been one of the true shining lights across breaks music this year, constantly updating the sound and pulling together some huge releases and compilation drops. They begin to close out the year with the third edition of their 'Beats & Pieces' collection series, welcoming sixteen artists inside for a fourteen track experience. It's jam-packed with juice, with the likes of Sonale, Morgue, Sir-Vere, Nathan Green, Temponaughts and more providing heavyweight additions. We also get to explore a wide range of new school breaks as the project evolves, from the gritty, more rave-ready synth scraps of 'I'm On It' from Dustin Funkman, to the more funk-induced feelings of 'Don't Stop' from The Funk Philosopher & Kevsed. Overall, this is a solid way to close out the year from a label that has continued to impress at every turn!

Big Fat Remixes
Various
Review: What a vibrant collection we have here from the team over at Big Fat Mama Beats, as they assemble their team to deliver a sizzling box of breakbeat remixes, under the 'Big Fat Remixes' title. Opening up, Mr Bristow arrives with the colourful horn flutters and metallic bass stabs of 'Body Roll', which kicks us off in a groovy zone, followed by the almost ska-like drum licks and glittering guitar scats of 'I Want Your Soul' from PulpFusion. From here, Sir-Vere delivers a spacey backdrop of blippy basslines and euphoric horn toots on 'Beneath My Skin', next to Nathan Green, who turns up the pace for the unpredictable percussive switch ups of 'Breakout', before One Dead Jedi arrives for a fiery finale. 'Alas Poor Poochie' sends us on a journey of unique sonic design and nostalgic chord driven build ups, rounding off the project with a dash of the unique for good measure.

Funk Bananas Vol 4
Various
Review: As always with Big Fat Mama Beats, they have come to put on a show with this latest addition to their 'Funk Bananas' compilation series, which enters its fourth edition with a dash of finesse. The combination of psychedelic melodies and groovy drum designs that lie at the heart of every track are what give the project a fantastic level of cohesion, as in the uplifting horn toots and lively vocals of Pecoe's 'Funky Individual'. The whole project hosts a pretty professional vibe, with the likes of Sir-Vere, The Funk Philosopher, Sonale, The Criminal Minds and more all making wavy additions. Our favourites from the project have to include the monstrous bass pulsations and techy arpeggios of B.U.U.G's 'Dancin Time', next to the Chubby Robots rework of 'Space Time' from Adrenalinez and Wiccatron's lively percussive masterclass in 'Funk Dribble.

Roc The Breaks Vol 2
Review: It's rare that we find ourselves exploring a new drop from the Big Fat Mama Beats crew that doesn't catch our interest, with the label's output being so damn consistent. This latest offering from DJ Smartie Roc is a powerful collection of post-breaks influenced bangers, kicking off with the rave ready drum slaps and powerful bass synth designs of 'Super Breaks'. From here we dive down a much more typical breakbeat route as layers of groovy rhythms are smashed together with a sub-busting bassline on 'Dance' before 'Paid To Roc' draws a more moogy set of influences. Next, the thickened bass synth action of 'Bumped Up' adds another twist to this EP's tale before the nostalgic organ chord and post-hardcore breaks sampling of 'Concentrate' gives us a worthy finale. Excellent stuff!

Shake N Break Vol 1
Review: As always with the Big Fat Mama Beats crew, the vibes are plentiful with their latest release drop, which sees the one they call Leygo return with four tracks packed with pure fire across the first edition of 'Shake N Break'. We begin with the ghoulish vocal sampling and scattered breakbeat drum designs of 'Get It Tonight', followed closely by the more funk influenced vocal lines and tearout reese basses of 'Music'. From here we galavant into the sharpened synthesizer writhings and chomping percussion of 'Rock Me Baby', before rounding off with 'Vital Signs', a blissful exploration into nostalgic keys and grizzly drum scatters!

Dirty Little Boxes
Review: It's been a short while since we last took in a project if this magnitude from the Big Fat Mama Beats crew, who unveil a fabulous full length album drop from The Criminal Minds, who really do go all out to explore the full breadth of the breakbeat sound. From the more experimental, junglist sounds of 'Analog Dog' and 'Bomb Drops', to the throwback, nostalgic energies of 'Rocksteady' and electro-inspired flavours of 'Twin Sunset', this album covers some serious ground moderately quickly! For us, the title track 'Dirty Little Boxes' alongside Nathan Green is the clear standout, adding a dash of class to the tracklisting with it's heist-like bass grooves and percussive influxes. We also enjoyed the high energy bass sweeps and drum energies of 'Cracked' which again takes us to the complete other end of the spectrum. Awesome work!

Doozer Jam
Review: It's been a brief minute since we last heard from the Big Fast Mama Beats imprint, but boy was it worth the wait as they unveil this brand new four track package from the one and only Sonale. We begin with 'The Name', an uber groovy slap up between crunchy LFO technique and super punchy drum work, before we get a bit more sample heavy in the horn sections of the title track 'Dozer Jam'. The party doesn't slow down as we progress through the EP, with our next stop being the super jazzy riff work and groovy bassline slides of 'Get Happy' before the more spaced out grizzling synthesizer lines and mixed instrumentation of 'Carnivale' gives the EP it's final lick of paint. Excellent work!

Bop Till You Drop EP
Review: It would appear that the Big Fat Mama Beats party shows no signs of slowing down despite the removal of dances around the country, as they welcome this electrifying new drop from Sir-Vere, complete with a back of top quality remix additions. The title track 'Bop Til You Drop', featuring Rory Hoy is a classic example of electronic dance music performing to its fullest, throwing us shades of early Prodigy with it's powerful electric guitar leads and hard hitting drumlines, coming complete with remixes form Vodzilla, Nathan Green and Rory Hoy himself. Hoy then returns on 'Rise Above', a slower 4x4 roller, aimed at a much more relaxed audience as the uplifting, indie-sounding vocal lines and glittering percussion give us something very different, again accompanied by remixes, this time from Vodzilla and Systemic.

Funky Monkey
Review: In recent times the crew behind Big Fat Mama Beats have been on somewhat of a roll, with this latest LP From The Funk Philosopher proving to be another cracking release in a long line of successful drops. The LP itself takes the title 'Funky Monkey' and is in fact a top quality showcase of the spectrum of sounds that now exists within the breakbeat bracket, from the super crunchy drum designs of 'Lazy Hazy Dayz', to the more funk-inspired musicality of 'Gone West', it's got the lot! The favourites on this one have to include the dancefloor ready rumbles of 'Funky Heyz', alongside the fabulous work behind Sonale's sumptuous synth-heavy relick of the title track 'Funky Monkey'.

Best Of Environmental Science
Review: Well boy oh boy do we have a weighty selection on our hands as the best of the Environmental Science catalogue is gathered into one fourteen track playlist, courtesy of Big Fat Mama Beats. The selection showcases nothing short of an epic discography, with breaksy room shakers such as 'Brisco Sucks' alongside the more acidic throwback sounds of 'Trigger Time' being combined in style. Our highlights on this one, have to include the super moody sub rattles of 'Chic Terrorist', backed up by the nostalgic drum twists of 'The Day The Zak Stood Still' and of course the synthy brilliance of 'Standard Hoodlum Issue'.

For The People
Review: It's looking like this new decade is going to be an exciting time for the ever expanding breakbeat scene, as more and more people flock to the genre to experience a certified good time. We hear take a look at Big Fat Mama Beats as they employ the sounds of Sonale across through wicked originals, kicking off with the super catchy vocals of Klumzy Tung on the hard hitting 'Hold On'. Next, the synthesizer racks really come out to play as we are thrown hither and yon across the groovy arrangements of 'It's Allright', before the title track 'For The People' signs off the project with another final dashing of super groovy breakbeat energy!

Psycho Ballistic Funk
Played by: Wiccatron
Review: If you are looking to get stuck into a juicy new extended project, packed to the very top with unique and extremely creative breakbeat displays, then look no further than this latest offering from Sir-Vere, who joins forces with Big Fat Mama Beats for an awesome selection. The album takes on an almost indie style, with live guitars and electrifying vocal FX taking a major lead roll across a large majority of it. For us, the stand out originals are pretty clear, with the overly emotive synthesizer tones of 'The Sundance Kiss' making a stand out appearance alongside the oldschool hardcore flavourings of 'Consume Me' and the fidget-like shuffles of 'Lights Out''.

Beats & Pieces Vol 1
Various
Played by: Rory Hoy, Wiccatron
Review: The guys at Big Fat Mama Beats have pulled out all the stocks available on this one as they ready up and unveil a mammoth compilation, pulling together twenty absolutely monstrous recordings from across the breakbeat spectrum. There's something for everyone on this one, be it the more old school funk driven drum work on 'Dissin U' from StuC4C, the more rock driven guitar riffs of 'Old Tape' from Adrenalinez, or the super futuristic synthesis on the Chubby Robots rework of 'So Good', originally from The Placenta, featuring Wiccatron. This is definitely one we would recommend getting stuck into on a long play!

Egghead Mini EP
Review: The enigmatic Sonale is back with his second compilation to date, this time on the bodacious Big Fat Mama Beats label, and it's another wild breakbeat showdown, full of funk and boogie power. Aside from his own sick cuts, the producer is joined by a whole squadron of breaks-junkies, notably the likes of The Funk Philosopher, Rory Hoy and Leygo. His own tunes are the baddest, though, as they all showcase different sides of the breaks circuit, from the big beat vibes of "Egghead" to the charming, boogie flexing of "Disco Dog". Sonale's back in the game.

Non Player Character
Played by: Rory Hoy, Wiccatron
Review: As one of breakbeat's leading lights, One Dead Jedi makes a return in top form with his full length LP project 'Non Player Character'. From start to finish the album is a perfect example of how creative breakbeat production can be when enough spark is applied. Be it either the classic rolling drums of 'What's The Dealio?" or the smooth ride driven rhythms of 'Critical Hit', the full spectrum appears to have been addressed and recreated brilliantly. Other highlights from this one include the junglist chops of ''Backstreet Feline Micro Drama' and the synth heavy title track 'Non Player Character' which cartwheels along traversing a multitude of musical themes.

The Other Side Of Forever EP
Review: Ahoy Hoy! Following last year's album Who Needs Reality, young Rory returns with a fresh party cache for 2018. As always with Hoy, the focus is fixed firmly on the furious funk vibes as we slip, slide and slither through seven cuts, four of which are written with kindred funker Quincy Jointz. Highlights include the pitch-shifting vocal looping insanity of "Just So Fresh", the salubrious bass plucks on "Bounce If U Want 2", the sleazy guitar textures fretless bass runs of "Funk On Funk Off" and the heady blend of euphoria on "The Other Side Of Forever". See you on the other side!
