Review: Blackout have a reputation to uphold. Known for releasing only the darkest, tetchiest drum and bass, each release comes as a sort-of blunt trauma relief from the soulful vibes of the lighter end of the spectrum. "Meteor" cracks into life through layered synths and quickly sets a heavier-than-thou precedent with dark bass and perfectly proportioned drums. "Deserted" sinks even deeper, with weighty bass droning far below a muddle of tight top-end crackles and snares. "Mudslide" brings out the sci-fi in both producers as they wrench twisted sounds from distorted breaks and pads to create cinematic sounds through the blackness. Playing with samples, the pair bring trance and techy coldness to "Tough Leap" and finally the neuro continues in hard-hitting "Mindshaker". Avoid at your peril.
