Bomb Strikes

Exploding onto the scene in 2004, UK-based Bomb Strikes wears the medal of honour for funk, broken beats, breaks and bass. Releasing tracks from Krafty Kuts, Tom Booze, A. Skillz, Nick Thayer, KW Griff, Featurecast, Pimpsoul and more, label leaders Beatvandals and Mooqee push a superb genre-bashing musical agenda fit for the dancefloor. Bomb Strikes has received global recognition and has been described as ‘predictably amazing’ by DJ Yoda.

It's crazy to think how much the label has grown and now works with artists and partners from around the globe. Alongside individual artist releases Bombstrike is also home to the much loved Funk n' Beats, Disco Funkin' and Bass Funk compilation series, with guest curators helping the listener discover new music or unearth forgotten classics.

We continue to push things forward with everything we do, whether it is releases, festival stages or club nights.... We always do it with our same founding ideals and will continue to do what we do best. Watch this space.

Joy EP
Joy EPEXCLUSIVE
Pride & Joy - (3:32) 134 BPM
Get Up - (3:26) 150 BPM Hot
Review: Some people have incorrectly dubbed Switzerland as being well, a bit boring. This is nonsense of course, and, with their cheeky mash-up productions, Swiss duo The Niceguys take great delight in proving the haters wrong. The EP's title alone sets the tone - Joy indeed. There are two incendiary party jams featured here - "Pride & Joy" leads the way, taking Marvin Gaye's ode to fatherhood and setting it to a slow trumpet-stab-lead hip-hop groove. Providing a contemporary foil to the latter, "Get Up" sees classic Nate Dogg (and Eve!) set to a lively electro-house backbone. Feel the party joy!

Rock Me - (3:40) 106 BPM
Rock Me (dub remix) - (4:05) 106 BPM
Review: Brand new to the Bomb Strike block, Swiss duo lay down two stupendously cheeky bootlegs: "Dirty Banger" antes up with a sweaty MOP / Redman fusion over a greasy, sleazy glitch groove while "Rock Me" goes right back to 1975 and dusts off your dad's favourite Doobie Brothers album. Complete with a stripped back dub version, "Rock Me" works so well you could be convinced it's a totally original production. Rocking.

Work Signs - (3:18) 55 BPM Hot
Funky Vibrations - (3:12) 56 BPM
Hold Up (Battle Beat #1) - (1:36) 105 BPM
Review: Old Rummy returns to the Bomb Strikes stable with three more essential party jams. "Work Signs" takes Justin Timberlake back to the early '70s on a Parliament-charged funk train, the epic sample session "Funky Vibrations" flips us back to the early '90s with a focus on the De Le Soul's "Roller Skating Jam". Finally we get lively with a muscular big beat jam that features the distinctive vocal tones of DJ Kool Marva Whitney's evergreen horn hook from "Unwind Yourself". Show us a sign!

Off Yo Ass EP
Off Yo Ass EPEXCLUSIVE
Never Knew - (4:10) Hot
GET OFF YO ASS - (3:47)
Review: Beer-breathed breaks baron Tom Booze lays down two more cheeky bootleg blends. "Never Knew" goes back in time, kidnaps Fatman Scoop and brings him kicking, screaming and chanting into the future; taking Fatman's classic remix of Faith Evans, it's an instant bass-caked showdown. And if you think that's funky then check "Get Off Yo Ass": blending Funkadelic's outrageously funky "Get Off Your Ass And Jam" with Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica", KRS-One vocal chants and a ridiculously ugly bassline, he's created an absolute party monster. You best do as the Boozy one says: Get off your butts... and get down to this!

Bryx & Neon Steve - "Loves Me" - (4:16) Hot
Pop That - (4:33)
Check It - (3:46)
The Fool - (3:28)
Review: Canadian nu-funk upstart Bryx returns to Bomb Strikes after a brief hiatus with four more floor-shredding slammers. First up is a daring twist on Portishead. Taking the original's haunting undertones and ripping them into pieces with searing bass, it's a bold move but one that pays off. Elsewhere we get itchy and scratchy to the sawtooth heavy "Pop That", we get psychedelic and soulful on "Check It" and end on a raucous bass-ravaged high with "The Fool". Four big bass blasters, one cheeky release, Bryx is back and he's not taking any prisoners.

Pimpsoul - "Ain't Got No..." - (3:13) Hot
HerbGrinder - "The Horn" - (3:37)
Mr No Hands - "Happy Now" - (5:26)
Review: Phwoar! Bootlegs don't come bolder and juicier than this trio of treats from the Bomb Strikes crew. Pimpsoul take Nina Simone and gives her such a hard sonic slap the police really need to be informed. Herbgrinder takes the classic Dance Conspiracy horn sample (from Lafayette Afro Rock Band) and throws Barrington Levy's broader than Broadway lyrics over the top. Mr No Hands finishes the set with a slamming stepback to the 30s, completing one of Bomb Strikes' best releases to date (which is saying something).

Review: Steeze sees Bomb Strikes deliver another dynamite-fuelled beat workout from J Roc The label has been on fire as of late and they're certainly packing the punches, ranging from hip-hop to broken beat to all things crunchy, they've established a name for themselves within the sample-heavy domain. "So Much Steeze" mixes elements of dubstep together with classic rap battle-style vocals, whilst "Keep It Gansta" is funkier and more melodic with its total beat mash-up. Finally, "Piano Skank" brings the tropical heat over and rounds up this fun, booty-shaking EP for the imprint.

From Sun To Sun - (2:32)
Review: Fact: Tom's real surname is genuinely Booze! There was a terrible mix-up between the birth registry office and off licence when he was born. Naturally Tom was upset for many years, but he took consolation by burying himself in the studio with a sampler and a keen ear for a badboy groove, and his diligence is paying off. Each of this nu-funk trio squelches and fist bumps with unashamed party brutality, the highlight being the Bob James / Perpetual Motion sampling "Point & Shoot". Venture to no disco without this!

Mooqee & Pimpsoul - "To The Beat" - (4:25) 112 BPM Hot
Pimpsoul - "What" - (3:20) 108 BPM
Review: The Bomb Strike Sound System strikes again! This time Pimpsoul's taken the controls, picking up various co-pilots along the way. First up is "Merry Go Round". Co-written with Neon Steve, it's a really cool piece of sample mastery, taking a really obscure Supreme's vocal refrain and giving it a complete funk facial. "To The Beat" sees Pimpsoul flying in tandem with fellow Bomber Mooqee on a more stomp-angled number that incorporates a very Fred Durst sounding vocal snippet and a Fela Kuti horn sample. Finally Pimpers goes solo for "What". The prize banger of the bunch, it kidnaps the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, holds them in nu-funk's county jail and throws away the key with glee.

Keep Pounding - (4:14) Hot
Let It Pop - (4:04)
Do It - (4:02)
Played by: B-Dub, Ez Icarus, Mooqee, Hayz
Review: For the 20th instalment of the happy-go-lucky Bomb Strikes bootleg series, label regulars Moquee and Pimpsoul join forces. Those who've enjoyed their previous work will no doubt be salivating already - or at least dribbling profusely. "Keep Pounding" is typical of their cheeky, party-hearty style, turning shuffling classic "The Beat Goes On" into a snappy, stepping, glitch-laden breaks banger. "Let It Pop", meanwhile, wobbles and raves in all the right places, lacing a familiar hip-hop vocal over a typically pounding backdrop. Closer "Do It" sits somewhere between the two tracks, cutting up Chic's "Le Freak" and adding a silly, rectum-slackening bassline to propel things forward.

Nick Thayer & Ali B - "Music" - (3:12)
Nick Thayer & Ali B - "NE Way" - (3:16) Hot
Nick Thayer & Ali B - "Back To You" - (3:16)
Review: A stellar partnership for this latest volume in Bombstrikes' series of funk 'n' breaks party weapons, which came about after Ali B called in on Nick Thayer during a recent Australian tour. The pair fuse together a wild set of influences and sounds, as on opener "Music" which evokes Cypress Hill, Jay Z and classic '60s soul whilst still staying true to their block-rocking breaks sound. "NE Way" dips into a riff made famous by Dillinger and pimps it out gloriously with heavy drums while "Back To You" samples a line from one of De La Soul's classics and adds a Moog-ish bassline and all manner of funky sampled breaks.

Bombstrikes Vol 18
Shine Like A Halo - (4:54) Hot
Masterpiece - (4:55)
Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from bootleg specialists Bombstrikes - tried-and-tested mash-ups underpinned by floor-friendly breakbeats. This latest instalment comes from rising breaks star Badboe, who offers two soul-flecked groovers. Both are slightly less hectic and full-throttle than previous Bombstrikes releases, but that's no bad thing. "Shine Like A Halo" fuses a bouncing, midtempo break with wobbly (but surprisingly subtle) bass, the obligatory hip-hop samples and a dash "Son of a Preacher Man". "Masterpiece", meanwhile, takes a similarly soulful approach, contrasting Jurassic 5 raps with sweet soul vocal snatches at a dancefloor hip-hop tempo. The most cultured Bombstrikes release for some time - and that's a compliment.

Pimpsoul - "Set It Off" - (4:55) 112 BPM
Review: The adrenalin junkies at Bomb Strikes HQ launch a new series of EPs designed to demonstrate the studio skills of their main artists. Here, Pimpsoul and Neon Steve make their debut on the long-established breaks bootleg/mash-up imprint, offering up a trio of heavyweight jams. As ever, all three have that typical Bomb Strikes vibe, which marries tried and tested breaks and back passage-bothering bass with just the right amount of rap and some sneaky little melodic hooks. Pimpsoul's "Set It Off" slightly flips the script, working in a cute easy listening/slacker pop vocal. Otherwise, it's floor-baiting business all round!

Played by: Prosper, Badboe, B-Dub, TURNTILL
Review: The latest in Bomb Strikes' series of party-smashing bootlegs and breaks sees Denmark's Badboe chop it up with France's Prosper over these two new cuts. The Fatback Band's "Gotta Learn How To Dance" acts as the basis for "Too Hot To Handle", with some hyped bass added to the funk as well as acapella cuts from Method Man amongst others. "Rock The Beat" sees the duo going for a full-on soulful vocal treatment, complete with some energetic filtering, while Mooqee and Beatvandals's accompanying remix throws on some Jackson 5 magic into the mix too.

Review: Another vital release from the Bombstrikes crew as Canadian mash-up star J Roc fuses a sack full of tunes on this new EP - led by "Nickelodeon", which samples jaunty '50s tune "Music Music Music" by Teresa Brewer and blends it with a hip-hop sensibility. Bombstrikes boss Mooqee joins J Roc on the club-rocking electro swinging "Better Things", while Sam Cooke's "Shake" gets a radical D&B overhaul.

Shooting - (3:34)
Review: The Bomb Strikes series has successfully carved out a niche for itself by providing impressively incendiary mash-ups - the sort that almost guarantee hands-aloft anarchy on dancefloors. On this latest instalment, regular mash-up merchants Moquee and Beat Vandals join forces for two more party-hearty assaults. A-Side "Player" is arguably the pick, fusing elements of Chicago's "Street Player" with oft-used breaks and excerpts from a familiar R&B vocal. Up next, "Shooting" is a messier sounding - but no less playable - mash-up of Roots Manuva's "Witness", hip-hop acapellas and faithfully big beats. Job done... as usual.

Ladies Love Cool Jams - (2:51)
Review: Purveyors of some of the canniest mash-ups and bootleg-style beats for quite a while now, Bomb Strikes return with this new dancefloor destroying EP from Aussie breakbeat titan Nick Thayer. Incorporating his usual electro-laced breaks for three excellent mash-ups, he drops The Who's seminal "My Generation" over a woozy, bass-punch beat while Rakim's "Let The Rhythm Hit 'Em" acapella is layered over a swaggering midtempo beat on "Rhythm Method". Continuing on the hip-hop theme, LL Cool J's "G.O.A.T" is transformed into a hard-rocking monster with copious amounts of bass spilling out over some block-rocking drums.

Review: Back with more essential breaks and party-flavoured cuts, London's Mooqee drops the 8th volume of his series for his Bombstrikes label. Working together bits from Wreckx-N-Effect's "Rumpshaker" and a host of other classic accapellas, "Polar Crunk" is a slow, bassy funk-meets-crunk joy, while the more uptempo "Rippin Up" mixes a nu-funk backing with some classic UBB cuts and some old-skool focused accapellas.

A Skillz and Beatvandals play a blinder on "Sunshine" - speeding up Roy Ayres' bonafide classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" with a tight beat layered underneath and chopped up respectfully. Review: Mooqee's Bombstrikes series enters its fourth instalment, this time with a little help from Utah Saints and Bombstrikes co-head, Beatvandals. Together, they brilliantly rearrange Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You" into an entirely new jam on "See Mice Elf", with a plethora of vocal cuts thrown into this party hip-hop melange (including bits of Skee Lo's "I Wish").
