Bomb Strikes

Exploding onto the scene in 2004, UK-based Bomb Strikes wears the medal of honour for funk, broken beats, breaks and bass. Releasing tracks from Krafty Kuts, Tom Booze, A. Skillz, Nick Thayer, KW Griff, Featurecast, Pimpsoul and more, label leaders Beatvandals and Mooqee push a superb genre-bashing musical agenda fit for the dancefloor. Bomb Strikes has received global recognition and has been described as ‘predictably amazing’ by DJ Yoda.

It's crazy to think how much the label has grown and now works with artists and partners from around the globe. Alongside individual artist releases Bombstrike is also home to the much loved Funk n' Beats, Disco Funkin' and Bass Funk compilation series, with guest curators helping the listener discover new music or unearth forgotten classics.

We continue to push things forward with everything we do, whether it is releases, festival stages or club nights.... We always do it with our same founding ideals and will continue to do what we do best. Watch this space.

Pimpsoul - "Set It Off" - (4:55) 112 BPM
Review: The adrenalin junkies at Bomb Strikes HQ launch a new series of EPs designed to demonstrate the studio skills of their main artists. Here, Pimpsoul and Neon Steve make their debut on the long-established breaks bootleg/mash-up imprint, offering up a trio of heavyweight jams. As ever, all three have that typical Bomb Strikes vibe, which marries tried and tested breaks and back passage-bothering bass with just the right amount of rap and some sneaky little melodic hooks. Pimpsoul's "Set It Off" slightly flips the script, working in a cute easy listening/slacker pop vocal. Otherwise, it's floor-baiting business all round!

Freed From Desire (Boca 45 Remix)
Freed From Desire (Boca 45 remix) - (3:21) 62 BPM
Review: Taken from Bombstrikes compilation - Funk N' Beats Vol. 10, curated by Bristol's very own Boca 45. 'Freed From Desire' is Nat Tate's cover of a dance anthem featuring Waldo's Gift and Yolanda Quartey (AKA Yola, fresh from an award nominated performance portraying Sister Rosetta in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis movie), reworked into future funk classic by Boca 45. Guitar riffs and rolling beats dance alongside one hell of a vocal performance from Yolanda. Delivering an interpretation with such gravitas that it feels like it could actually be the original. A perfect taster of what the album has in store with music from Jurassic 5's Chali 2NA & Krafty Kuts. The Gaff, The Allergies' own DJ Moneyshot, Paul Nice & Phill Most Chill, X-Ray Ted, and many more.

Review: Taken from the forthcoming Bombstrikes compilation - Joints n' Jams Vol. 1 curated by Glasgow's funkiest Shaka Loves You, 'Cruisin' is a new and exclusive track from the duo themselves. As a small taster of what can be expected from the full release, this Disco Stomper is just one track of many exclusives from the album which spans many genres from Funk and Hip Hop to Beats and House. The full album features music from such luminaries as DJ Nu-Mark & Quantic, Kraak & Smaak, The Nextmen & Kiko Bun, Izo FitzRoy, Chali 2NA & Krafty Kuts, Andy Cooper, The Allergies and Fort Knox Five. Also not forgetting the Disco vibes of Hobbs & Ron Mexico, Birdee & Andre Espertue, Afriquoi and Art of Tones. The assembled tracklisting really does encapsulate the signature 'SLY' multi-genre ethos and sound.

Right from the off, the levels are high as we are greeted by smooth percussion based introductory rhythms, leading us rapidly towards an extremely vibrant breakdown. The drop itself consists of rapidfire synthesizer slaps, unpredictable horn lines and the occasional vocal inflection, all wrapped up within a bag of super energetic drum designs for good measure. Gimme Soul - (3:12) 125 BPM
Review: X-Ray Ted continues to astound with his recent run of impeccable releases. When he isn't putting together audio slices of sunshine, it seems he is a true master at delivering some soul power. His latest cut 'Gimme Soul' sees him at his sampling and slicing best, taking guitar hooks, layering with heavy rolling beats, and reimagining vocal hooks to deliver that XRT special sauce, bursting with old-school funk 'n' Soul delivered with a modern twist.
XRT:"Gimme Soul is a love letter to the late 60s. The horns, the drum breaks, guitars and organs all spoke to me as textures which really solidify everything I love about the era. I wanted to follow up my last EP with something heavy and groovy, but still artistically relevant and exciting - giving a post-modern interpretation which felt like both 1968 and 2023."

Strip It (CMC & Silenta Remix)
Strip It (CMC & Silenta remix) - (3:20) 58 BPM
Review: Ahead of the full 'Remixed EP' things kick off with a sensational rework of "Strip it".Originally hailed for its early Prince-inspired vibes and the captivating soulful vocals of Bobby Saint, alongside the smooth lyrical flow of Prop Dylan, The Niceguys set a high bar with their original release last year, earning widespread acclaim and support. Now, German duo CMC & Silenta take the helm to reimagine this beloved track, infusing it with their formidable musical prowess. The essence of the original remains intact, with CMC & Silenta skillfully preserving its funk-laden goodness. However, they inject new life into the mix with tantalizing guitar licks, irresistible synth hooks, and a beefed-up bottom end that serves as the perfect foundation for the vocals. The result? A remix tailor-made for the dancefloor, yet still possessing the depth and character to stand on its own as a song.

Review: Back with more essential breaks and party-flavoured cuts, London's Mooqee drops the 8th volume of his series for his Bombstrikes label. Working together bits from Wreckx-N-Effect's "Rumpshaker" and a host of other classic accapellas, "Polar Crunk" is a slow, bassy funk-meets-crunk joy, while the more uptempo "Rippin Up" mixes a nu-funk backing with some classic UBB cuts and some old-skool focused accapellas.

Review: Two masters of bootleg-style, hip-hop/funk mash ups team up for this latest instalment in Bombstrikes' series of party rocking tuneage. A Skillz and Beatvandals play a blinder on "Sunshine" - speeding up Roy Ayres' bonafide classic "Everybody Loves The Sunshine" with a tight beat layered underneath and chopped up respectfully. Shine Like A Halo - (4:54) Hot
Masterpiece - (4:55)
Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from bootleg specialists Bombstrikes - tried-and-tested mash-ups underpinned by floor-friendly breakbeats. This latest instalment comes from rising breaks star Badboe, who offers two soul-flecked groovers. Both are slightly less hectic and full-throttle than previous Bombstrikes releases, but that's no bad thing. "Shine Like A Halo" fuses a bouncing, midtempo break with wobbly (but surprisingly subtle) bass, the obligatory hip-hop samples and a dash "Son of a Preacher Man". "Masterpiece", meanwhile, takes a similarly soulful approach, contrasting Jurassic 5 raps with sweet soul vocal snatches at a dancefloor hip-hop tempo. The most cultured Bombstrikes release for some time - and that's a compliment.

Pimpsoul - "What" - (3:20) 108 BPM
Review: The Bomb Strike Sound System strikes again! This time Pimpsoul's taken the controls, picking up various co-pilots along the way. First up is "Merry Go Round". Co-written with Neon Steve, it's a really cool piece of sample mastery, taking a really obscure Supreme's vocal refrain and giving it a complete funk facial. "To The Beat" sees Pimpsoul flying in tandem with fellow Bomber Mooqee on a more stomp-angled number that incorporates a very Fred Durst sounding vocal snippet and a Fela Kuti horn sample. Finally Pimpers goes solo for "What". The prize banger of the bunch, it kidnaps the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, holds them in nu-funk's county jail and throws away the key with glee.

Review: Hey, you're looking hungry - fancy a slice of carnival pie? Go on, have two. We'll never tell! And neither will Mooque and Herbgrinder, the men behind this ridiculously funky booty buster. Sounding somewhere between Fatboy Slim and Riva Starr, "Shake Your Rumpah" does everything you'd expect it to. And more! Review: The Bomb Strikes series has successfully carved out a niche for itself by providing impressively incendiary mash-ups - the sort that almost guarantee hands-aloft anarchy on dancefloors. On this latest instalment, regular mash-up merchants Moquee and Beat Vandals join forces for two more party-hearty assaults. A-Side "Player" is arguably the pick, fusing elements of Chicago's "Street Player" with oft-used breaks and excerpts from a familiar R&B vocal. Up next, "Shooting" is a messier sounding - but no less playable - mash-up of Roots Manuva's "Witness", hip-hop acapellas and faithfully big beats. Job done... as usual.

"Party People" is a bouncing, "Where's Your Head At" sampling gem which utilises its numerous hip-hop cut ups to great effect, its shining robot electro vibe guaranteed to get you moving. Review: The 80s boogie/electrofunk force is strong in this one! 'Popular' itself features a half-sung, half-spoken R&B vocal from Mustafa Akbar that's reminiscent of early 70s Curtis Mayfield, but places it atop a background that's all about that early 80s synth squelch. If you really want to transport yourself back to the days of white socks, high-top fades and shiny Mr Byrite suits, though, then 'Your Love' is the place to head, a string-drenched and brass-flecked affair that sits right on the disco/boogie cusp, augmented by some killer Joey Negro-esque stabs. Review: Beer-breathed breaks baron Tom Booze lays down two more cheeky bootleg blends. "Never Knew" goes back in time, kidnaps Fatman Scoop and brings him kicking, screaming and chanting into the future; taking Fatman's classic remix of Faith Evans, it's an instant bass-caked showdown. And if you think that's funky then check "Get Off Yo Ass": blending Funkadelic's outrageously funky "Get Off Your Ass And Jam" with Tom Browne's "Funkin For Jamaica", KRS-One vocal chants and a ridiculously ugly bassline, he's created an absolute party monster. Review: Bomb Strikes boss Mooqee doesn't pretend to be interested in deeper, stranger or more alternative sounds. He's interested in smashing any party into tiny little pieces, getting punters going with life-affirming breakbeat funk and misty-eyed rave revivalism. There's much of the latter on this two-track EP, which opens with a thunderous fusion of wobble bass, gnarled electronics, Orbital-ish synths and a gargantuan piano riff - all, of course, riding a bustling breakbreat rhythm. Blending the low-end wobble of dubstep with the shuffle of breaks and hip-hop, both tracks here are impressively large. Now updated in remix-form, both Funkanomics and Rory Hoy give it a brand new wardrobe... Just A Little Time
Just A Little Time - (6:15) 124 BPM
Gonna Work Out Fine - (6:21) 124 BPM Hot
Review: A simple two-tracker here from Glasgow duo Shaka Loves You, coming on Mooqee and Beatvandals' long-running Bomb Strikes label. 'Just A Little Time' is a fairly smooth-rollling contemporary disco jam given an energy boost in the mid-section via the injection of some ruff-edged Todd Terry-esque stabs, before the accompanying 'Gonna Work Out Fine' picks up that mid-90s disco-house ball and REALLY runs with it. Cosmic/Italo enthusiasts of the serious, chin-stroking variety may be left cold, but if it's energetic, unpretentious Saturday night fun and frolics you're after, step right on in - either of these cuts should serve your needs nicely.

Get Out The House
Get Out The House (Dirty version) - (2:36) 110 BPM Hot
Get Out The House (feat Nathaniel Hall - clean version) - (2:36) 110 BPM
Review: Bristol beatsmith X-Ray Ted teams up with the legendary Nathaniel Hall (aka Baby Bam of Jungle Brothers) to unleash this funk-fuelled jam on Bomb Strikes. Deep minded lyricism is accompanied by the best block rockin' beats to close out the year on "Get Out The House" (Dirty version) while for those of you thinking the original was a bit NSFW, never fear, the clean version is here and featured for your radio play pleasure.
