Bomb Strikes

Exploding onto the scene in 2004, UK-based Bomb Strikes wears the medal of honour for funk, broken beats, breaks and bass. Releasing tracks from Krafty Kuts, Tom Booze, A. Skillz, Nick Thayer, KW Griff, Featurecast, Pimpsoul and more, label leaders Beatvandals and Mooqee push a superb genre-bashing musical agenda fit for the dancefloor. Bomb Strikes has received global recognition and has been described as ‘predictably amazing’ by DJ Yoda.

It's crazy to think how much the label has grown and now works with artists and partners from around the globe. Alongside individual artist releases Bombstrike is also home to the much loved Funk n' Beats, Disco Funkin' and Bass Funk compilation series, with guest curators helping the listener discover new music or unearth forgotten classics.

We continue to push things forward with everything we do, whether it is releases, festival stages or club nights.... We always do it with our same founding ideals and will continue to do what we do best. Watch this space.

Dance With Me
Dance With Me - (3:08) 55 BPM
Played by: Jayl Funk
Review: X-Ray Ted delivers a heavyweight slice of funk in the form of 'Dance With Me', offering a tantalising glimpse into what his forthcoming debut album has in store. The Bristol producer has once again deftly merged the timeless allure of vintage funk with the energy of modern production. Swaggering horn hooks combine with rolling beats, guitar licks and hip-hop refrains to create the perfect musical bed for the anthemic and soul-infused vocals of fellow Bristolian Carys Abigail. It's no surprise at all that this one already has the Craig Charles seal of approval by featuring in his prestigious BBC 6 Music 'future funk tracks of 2024' show.
XRT: 'Dance With Me' is an ode to the excitement of a new relationship; putting yourself at risk for the potential of incredible reward. Those driving horns scream of promise, and the big slappy drums represent confidence and solidity of intention. As a title, 'Dance With Me' is just as much an invitation as it is a mission statement for the lead-out single of my debut album.

Strip It (feat Bobby Saint & Prop Dylan - CMC & Silenta remix) - (3:20) 58 BPM
Irie (feat Bobby Saint - Flevans remix) - (4:17) 59 BPM
Review: Four-piece "producer collective and DJ team" The Niceguys hail from Switzerland and have a long string of releases under their belt for labels like Bomb Strikes, Westwood Recordings and Ghetto Funk. Here they return to the former with four cuts that would work on funk-breaks and modern soul floors alike, with the Bobby Saint-vocalled 'Irie' and 'Strip It' rocking a Prince-like vibe, 'Don't Let Go' sporting a full-lunged soul vocal from Justina Lee Brown, and 'Dance' having something of a Smoove & Turrell-like feel. 'Don't Let Go' takes the gold for this writer but it's all good so feel free to disagree!

Strip It (CMC & Silenta Remix)
Strip It (CMC & Silenta remix) - (3:20) 58 BPM
Review: Ahead of the full 'Remixed EP' things kick off with a sensational rework of "Strip it".Originally hailed for its early Prince-inspired vibes and the captivating soulful vocals of Bobby Saint, alongside the smooth lyrical flow of Prop Dylan, The Niceguys set a high bar with their original release last year, earning widespread acclaim and support. Now, German duo CMC & Silenta take the helm to reimagine this beloved track, infusing it with their formidable musical prowess. The essence of the original remains intact, with CMC & Silenta skillfully preserving its funk-laden goodness. However, they inject new life into the mix with tantalizing guitar licks, irresistible synth hooks, and a beefed-up bottom end that serves as the perfect foundation for the vocals. The result? A remix tailor-made for the dancefloor, yet still possessing the depth and character to stand on its own as a song.

Simulation EP
Simulation - (3:33) 50 BPM
Simulation (instrumental) - (3:33) 50 BPM
Review: A decade after delivering his first EP for Bomb Strikes, Tom Booze returns to the party-starting imprint with an ear-catching collection of original productions. Title track 'Simulation' - which is also available in a vocal free instrumental mix form - is a sparkling chunk of mid-tempo synthesiser-driven nu-disco/synth-pop fusion that comes complete with audible nods to Daft Punk and the auto-tune antics of 21st century electronic pop. Booze pays tribute to the squelchy synth-bass and funk-fuelled guitar locks of Parliament/Funkadelic on bonus cut 'The T-Funk', a flash-fried slab of authentic P-funk revivalism.

Boca 45 - "Suki's Revenge Pt. 2" - (3:17) 57 BPM

Review: Following in the footsteps of the likes of A Skillz, Beatvandals and The Allergies, Boca 45 helms the latest in Bomb Strikes' 'Funk N' Beats' compilation/mix album series, which has been running since 2013. As ever, Vol 10 features an eclectic, party-hearty mix of funk, hiphop and breaks jams, with wicky-wicky scratch sounds applied liberally. Notable inclusions this time around include two "never heard it like that before" covers of classics from the Spencer Davis Group and (sure to please footy fans) Gala, as well as Western Roots' reggae/ska-infused 'Bogus Daddy', while the bundled DJ mix version from Boca 45 showcases these sounds as they're really meant to be heard.

Freed From Desire (Boca 45 Remix)
Freed From Desire (Boca 45 remix) - (3:21) 62 BPM
Review: Taken from Bombstrikes compilation - Funk N' Beats Vol. 10, curated by Bristol's very own Boca 45. 'Freed From Desire' is Nat Tate's cover of a dance anthem featuring Waldo's Gift and Yolanda Quartey (AKA Yola, fresh from an award nominated performance portraying Sister Rosetta in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis movie), reworked into future funk classic by Boca 45. Guitar riffs and rolling beats dance alongside one hell of a vocal performance from Yolanda. Delivering an interpretation with such gravitas that it feels like it could actually be the original. A perfect taster of what the album has in store with music from Jurassic 5's Chali 2NA & Krafty Kuts. The Gaff, The Allergies' own DJ Moneyshot, Paul Nice & Phill Most Chill, X-Ray Ted, and many more.

Review: What an exciting project this was too open up as we see Tom Booze touch down on Bomb Strikes with a truly explosive compilation, hand-curated for maximum sonic impact. From start to finish this collection showcases the very best of the now in new school breakbeat, from the Asian-inspired string plucks of Lack Jemmon's 'Don't Stop' to the more dubstep inspired twists and grooves of YGT YGT YGT from Posij and the sizzling synthetics of The Funk Hunters & Kotek's rework of 'With You', originally from Haywyre'. Featuring tracks and mixes from the likes of The Allergies, The Nextmen, Ugly Duckling, Alice Russell, Lack Of Afro and Sam Krats, the emphasis here is on the kind of dusty funk/soul grooves that sit well alongside hip-hop and breaks - as opposed to the stack-heeled, silver-jumpsuited kind that goes better with disco - with standouts for this writer including Sly5thAve's moody, cinematic 'Shiznit' (think Shaft staring broodily out of a rain-streaked diner window) and Skill's 'Break It Down', a stuttery, stop-start gift for the jazz-dancers.

Review: Following fine outings from Fort Knox Five, the Allergies, Smoove and Marc Hype, amongst others, Bomb Strikes' reliable Funk N' Beats compilation series returns with rising star X-Ray Ted at the controls. In keeping with the series' heavyweight, funk-fuelled style, the Bristol-based DJ and beat-maker has gathered together a killer collection of soul, hip-hop and funk club cuts, with a smattering of more laidback numbers to keep things fresh. Highlights are plentiful throughout, with our picks including the boom-bap brilliance is Aldo Vanucci's tidy remix of 'All Down' by Mr Doris and D-Funk, the dancefloor jazz heaviness of Nostalgia 77's 'Changes', the cut-and-paste craziness of Double Dee & Steinski's 'Jazz' and the disco-funk masterclass that is X-Ray Ted's own 'Party Time'.

Review: Bringing a select bevvy of the best Bombstrikes tracks the label has released in 2020, it's enjoyed an explosive year of tunes from Krafty Kuts, Jet Boot Jack, Lack Jemmon, Shaka Loves You and more! They feature here with "Blow Your Whistle", a funked-out "Let's Move" and the lowdown swing-track "I'm A Boss". Other highlights include the Cypress Hill style hip house track "Stir It Up Sister (feat K MI & KDS)" to Prosper & Stabfinger's squelchy, space bubble cruise down mainstreet: "Down In The Basement (feat Awoke)". With some tear-out bass, horns and synths coming out of Ninjulas' "You Know I Like It", check out some lo-fi and slamming funk, disco and house from X-Ray Ted's "On The Floor'' alongside The Nice Guys' Godzilla-themes "Turn It Out" and Jet Boot Jack's strings in "Straight To My Head". Disco Funkin' Vol 3 (Curated By Natasha Kitty Katt)
Lovebirds - "Give Me A Sign" (feat Holly Backler) - (4:24) 54 BPM
Review: For the latest volume in their popular Disco Funkin' compilation strand, Bomb Strikes has handed over curation duties to rising star and Midnight Riot regular Natasha Kitty Katt. The Edinburgh DJ/producer's selections are undeniably addictive and on-point, moving between heavyweight re-edits (see her collaboration with Twisted Soul Collective, 'Twisted Katt', solo disco-funk tweak 'Edgarr!' and Oliver Boogie's slamming 'Dance Band'), superior nu-disco originals (Phoenix's piano-heavy 'Nature Dance', Fouk's sample-heavy 'Cat Lady' and the slick boogie revivalism of Lovebirds' 'Give Me a Sign') and loopy disco-house treats (the contributions from Shaka Loves You, Birdee, Hotmood and Mark Lower). Those looking for fresh dancefloor ammunition will find much to enjoy, while the Scottish DJ's accompanying mix is as entertaining and excitable as they come.

Review: The team at Bomb Strikes have been having a masterful 2020 in regards to the music they have been putting out there, a statement backed up by this blistering barrage of bass and breaks from Ninjula. The title track 'Spanish Princess' is an absolute weapon of a tune, combining catchy latin horn structures with lethal reesey synthesizer slaps to kick us off with a bang. Following this, 'You Know I Like It' takes a catchy riff alongside more potent horn lines to generate a spicy warbler, closely followed by the slower drum structures and choppy synth designs of 'What You Got' to round off an impressive selection.

Review: Three very serviceable contemporary funk bullets here, lovingly put together by Bristolian funk and hip-hop producer X-Ray Ted. 'Mirror Ballin'' places a jaunty little funk guitar riff front and centre, augmenting it with a wordless chant and numerous other vocal snips that are scattered liberally across the track in an 80s hip-hop kinda style. 'Get Into It' gets even busier with the sampler as it throws bites from seemingly every "get up" or "get on up" vocal ever recorded into the mix, while finally 'Never Gonna Let 'Em Say' plays us out on a rawer, sleazier funk tip, with more of a 'live' feel and less of the hip-hop production tricks.

'Get Out Of My Life', as remixed by Loo & Placido, fuses blues, Caribbean and hip-hop influences into an unlikely whole that works better than you might expect, while the Loils & Fruckie remix of the same track drops the steel drums and has a kind of robotic funk vibe. With the sheer depth of the project it's easy to get lost within the tracklisting, which is always a good sign on a large scale compilation.

Bass Funk Vol 3 (Mixed By Dubra)
Various / Dubra
Fort Knox Five - "Whatcha Gonna Do" (feat Mustafa Akbar - The Funk Hunters remix) - (4:33) 58 BPM
Review: Destination: Latvia. Bombstrikes welcome label regular Dubra to the stage to take selection duties for the third in their floor-firing Bass Funk mix series. Digging deep into the groove vaults, he's picked some outstanding timeless classics such as Krafty Kuts and Dyna's swaggering entrance theme "We Do This", Stickybuds' life-affirming glitch-slapper "Clap Your Hands" and A Skillz & Nick Thayer's body-slamming "Drop The Funk". Elsewhere we get our alien freak on with Opiuo, we get our heads knocked off by Dubra himself on "Keep It Going" and Punks favourite "You Don't" from Horger and Steve among many other straight up party-battering bass jams. 24 originals and a killer mix to boot, Bombstrikes are causing some serious damage with this collection. Strike while the dancefloor is hot yo!

Keep On Lovin' EP
Keep On Lovin' Me - (4:00) 55 BPM Hot
Review: The Funk Fury has been known to deliver a whole range of production styles, but on party breaks label Bomb Strikes, he presents three mainly slow retro groovers. "Keep On Lovin' Me" begins the show with a buzzy, humming bassline and a laid back breaky groove before being fleshed with familiar and catchy vintage 'baa-bah-bah-baah-bah-baaaah' vocal samples. Next, "That's The Funk" is bouncier, with clap-along drums and a whole patchwork of interwoven classic funk samples. "Tribe Of Disco" is the black sheep here, shaking things up with a speedy 70s disco-rock hybrid that is guaranteed to get everybody up on their feet!

Funk N' Beats Vol 3 (Mixed By Featurecast)
Various
The Allergies - "Special People" - (3:45) 57 BPM
Lack Of Afro - "The Outsider" - (3:47) 56 BPM
Black Grass - "Nice Up" - (5:33) 60 BPM
Review: Featurecast flexes hard into the crates right here: digging deep over 20 years of party breaks, he's put together the definitive journey of funk with the refreshing devil may care attitude we've come to expect. His selection excavations are here for all the benefit from... The Wiseguys's lesser-spotted jam "One For The Ladies", Lack Of Afro's horn-melting "The Outsider", Max Sedgley's sugar-sweet "Happy", Flevans' Afrofunk shake-up "12 Apostles" and Featurecast and Aldo Vanucci's 2008 hoe-down stomper "Blue Grassed Devil" are just some are just some of the floor-matured classics amid the 25 cuts on offer here. And that's before we even get to awesome mix. Don't dillydally on this one.

Bass Funk Vol 2 (unmixed tracks)
Mooqee / Various
Mooqee & Herbgrinder - "Rain" (Mooqee & Herbgrinder Bassfunk remix) - (3:36) 55 BPM
Wicked City - "Furious" - (3:53) 55 BPM
Basement Freaks - "Ladies Look Pretty" - (3:17) 55 BPM
Utah Saints, Drumsound & Bassline Smith - "What Can You Do For Me" (Herbgrinder remix) - (5:02) 55 BPM
Slappin Plastic & MC Shureshock - "It Shocks" (Pimpsoul remix) - (4:16) 57 BPM
Tom Booze - "How We Do This" - (4:44) 60 BPM
Review: Sometimes it pays to be a label boss, like for example here, on this latest Bomb Strikes comp where head honcho Mooqee has decided to hand himself the reigns. Manning the decks for nearly an hour, he whips up a frenzy of party breaks delirium over the course of 24 tracks. The tracks are supplied individually too, with highlights including the tropical trap-house of "Ladies Look Pretty" by Basement Freaks, the furious electro-bass mash-up "Get Got (VIP mix)" by Nick Thayer & A Skillz and the strompingly retro electro-funk of "How We Do This" by Tom Booze.

It Shocks Pt 1
It Shocks (Pimpsoul remix) - (4:16) 57 BPM Hot
Review: Here we have some old skool flavours concocted by a new skool duo, the improbably named Slappin Plastic & MC Shureshock. It Shocks Pt 1 sees the eponymous anthem by this Aussie duo reworked by two contemporaries. First up, funk maestro (self-proclaimed, mind) Pimpsoul mixes the original's vintage block rockin' vibes with some seriously muscular contemporary big beat funk. Next we get the original mix from Slappin Plastic & MC Shureshock which takes into more hands-in-the-air party rap territory. Can't wait to see what Pt 2 will entail.

Get Fonky EP
You Had It All - (3:42) 55 BPM
Review: Rumours that party producer Tom Booze records everything whilst completely hammered are yet to be confirmed. However one listen to his latest, the Get Fonky EP, and you'd be forgiven for believing them. This is no bad thing as both tracks here, "You Had It All" and "Get Fonky With It", both posses a certainly woozy, slo-mo charm. The former sees a delicious early 80s boogie jam grind along at 55 bpm, whilst the latter sees classic bloc rockin', anthem-mongering marry some lazy breaks for some classic p-funk party vibes.

Funk N' Beats Vol 2 (Mixed By Beatvandals)
Various / Beatvandals
Quantic Soul Orchestra - "Pushin' On" (feat Alice Russell) - (3:19) 52 BPM
The Allergies - "Heartbreaker" - (3:58) 54 BPM
Flow Dynamics - "Live In The Mix" - (4:30) 59 BPM
Review: UK purveyours of funky breaks, Bombstrikes Records, may have a controversial name but there's everything to love about their sound. The fun loving and dancefloor bothering label run by Mooqee & Beatvandals was founded in 2004 and they claim that if you have been to a club since then you will most likely have heard their releases. Well then! Starting off with the low slug funk of A Skillz's "Mooger Fooger (dub mix)", Mooqee & Beatvandals themselves appear with "Back Up" and the legendary Cut La Roc is still at it; "Sunday Morning People" (Herbgrinder remix)" proves that he's still got his finger on the pulse. Other highlights include Pimpsoul's ever soulful "Is This Love (feat Pat Fulgoni - Pimpsoul funk remix)" the street attitude of A Skillz & Beatvandals "Simply Playing (feat Real Elements)" and the legendary Martin Solveig (remixed by the equally legendary Mousse T) who appears with the James Brown sampling "I'm A Good Man".

Basement Booty EP
Ladies Look Pretty - (3:17) 55 BPM
Review: Last year Mooqee & Beatvandals celebrated the tenth anniversary of their Bombstrikes label. Here they maintain that momentum with a four-track party-friendly package from Basement Freaks. "Ladies Look Pretty" is a swaggering opener - all military rolls, hip-hop stabs and lairy chants. Elsewhere "Funkin' It Up" is beefed up 80s electro-rap at its finest, "Make It Clap" is an infectious Mexican/tropical trap hybrid and "Jamrock Bass" is moody reggaeton/bass jam.

Review: Currently in the midst of popping open champagne bottles left, right and centre, Mooqee & Beatvandals, are celebrating the tenth birthday of their popular party breaks label, Bomb Strikes. Following some retrospective anniversary releases, we now get a selection of "Future Bombs" to enjoy. Highlights include Neon Steve's brutal dubstep/hard funk hybrid "Kill Em With The Vibes", the wobble-heavy synth epic "Rumble" by Herbgrinder and Mooque's own breaky electro-houser "Piano Thing".

Funky Signs EP
Work Signs - (3:18) 55 BPM Hot
Funky Vibrations - (3:12) 56 BPM
Review: Old Rummy returns to the Bomb Strikes stable with three more essential party jams. "Work Signs" takes Justin Timberlake back to the early '70s on a Parliament-charged funk train, the epic sample session "Funky Vibrations" flips us back to the early '90s with a focus on the De Le Soul's "Roller Skating Jam". Finally we get lively with a muscular big beat jam that features the distinctive vocal tones of DJ Kool Marva Whitney's evergreen horn hook from "Unwind Yourself". Show us a sign!
