Mind Journey (Eomac remix) - (5:51) 112 BPM
Review: The third set of remixes of tracks from Ellen Allien's Nost album feature an in impressive cast; first up is Detroit legend Alan Oldham. Known for his releases as DJ T-1000 and his iconic art for labels like Djax, this Motor City legend doesn't disappoint with his take on "Jack My Ass". Insistent, menacing chords swarm in over tough, dubby beats and driving percussion. It's not as intense as his DJ T-1000 work, but still packs a mighty punch. The Amotik take on "Mind Journey" ups the ante further with a slamming rhythm and wild tonal bleeps. In contrast, Eomac?s take on the same track is an eerie, slow motion affair, led by ghostly synths and rumbling drums, while on XDB's version of "Call Me", rolling house drums underpin sensuous vocals and spiralling acid lines.

Swey - (5:26) 118 BPM
Review: Fast-rising Belfast producer Garry McCartney aka Ejeca delivers a killer release for Ellen Allien's label. McCartney's skill lies in drawing on established house tropes and putting his own spin on it. "Charger" sounds like a textbook deep house tune, with its flowing chords and insistent groove, but then it veers off course with a series of blaring sirens. "Bound To The Pump" is in a similar vein, but on this occasion, Ejeca utilises firing percussion and insistent vocal snatches to stand out from the slew of samey deep house. Meanwhile, "4Mula" and "Swey" sees him strip back his sound and focus on swinging, primal rhythms, with the latter impressing most.

Pump It Up
Pump It Up - (5:34) 119 BPM Hot
Played by: DJ Ford Foster
Review: Snuff Crew have long described their style as "the new old house sound of Germany". It's an apt description, as their productions ripple to the familiar sounds of jackin' Chicago house rhythms, the undulating intensity of acid and - on occasions - the druggy, synth-heavy pulse of Italo-disco. The masked men of mystery are at it again on this three-tracker for BPitch Control. Choose between the throbbing, Italo-meets-the Chemical Brothers vibes of "Berlin", the handclap-heavy Chicago-meets-New Jersey warmth of "Sick World" and title track "Pump It Up", which comes on like the soundtrack to a particularly messy night in a downtown Windy City basement.

Driven (remixes)
Driven (DBridge remix) - (6:54) 114 BPM
Review: German producer Douglas Greed veers away from techno with the title track of his latest album. Like many of the Bpitch artists, his track inhabits a middle ground between indie melancholia and electronic drama, with introverted vocals unfolding over breathless synths. What then of the remixes? Seth Troxler provides a chugging remix that midway through reveals shiny, trancey synth lines, while Chloe opts for one of her trademark electronic house rehapes, all pulsing basslines and acidic spirals dissecting the vocal. dBridge's take is more low profile than usual, with doubled up beats underpinning searing guitar and Marco Resmann delivers a dubby version, full of sensuous string passages.

King Of The Beat - (6:46) 115 BPM
Review: Despite a career stretching back to 2002, Italian duo System of Survival have been surprisingly quiet of late. This expansive EP for BPitch Control contains their first new material since 2012 debut album Needle & Thread. High on melody and atmosphere, it delivers plenty of highlights. Check, for example, the loose percussion, curious cut-ups and tumbling melodies of "Family Ring", the undulating fuzziness and dreamy pads of "I'm Not Able To", and the near Balearic drowsiness of closer "King of the Beats". The EP also includes a couple of notable remixes, with Hot Creations regular Miguel Campbell joining forces with Matt Hughes for a deliciously squidgy, glassy-eyed take on "Crash What".

Camea - "Love On The Balcony" - (5:23) 110 BPM
Review: As its title suggests, the latest compilation on Bpitch gives vent to the label's deeper side. It begins with Chaim's "Rain", where jazzy textures bubble to the surface over dubby beats. The track has an ethereal, almost subdued feeling to it and is in stark contrast to the raucous minimalism that Bpitch is sometimes associated with. This understated approach isn't confined to Chaim's contribution however; even more dance floor tracks like the pumping bass of Cormac's "The Present" are teeming with emotive undercurrents and Kassem Mosse's version of Ellen Alien's "Our Utopie" sees a series of chiming bells prevail over a pumping groove.

BPitch Control - Best Of 2013
Various
Mr Statik - "Irresistible" - (6:29) 119 BPM
Review: Listening to this compilation, it's clear that 2013 was a banner year for Ellen Allien's label. No longer so focused on stripped back techno - although the hissing noise and dark bass tones of Camea's "Black Sparrow" provide some connection to Bpitch's back catalogue - Best Of focuses on the area where pop and electronic music meet. The tumbling drums and plaintive vocals on Eating Snow's "Siamese Twins By Choice" could be early period Sting (that's a compliment by the way), while Dillon's "This Silence Kills" is a beautifully fragile serving of ethereal electronic pop. Bpitch can still rock the house when required, as the nasty acid of Snuff Crew's "Bass" demonstrates, but the real highlights of Best of 2013 are the label's leftfield excursions.

Work It Out
New Life (feat Rachel Row) - (9:16) 118 BPM
Review: The mysterious Snuff Crew are best known for their fascination with jacking Chicago house, but on the title track of this release, they dip their toes into the fleeting cultural phenomenon that was hip-house. For those too young to recall it, Snuff Crew do a pretty good job here; based on a jacking rhythm, "Work" features house legend Tyree Cooper on vocals, daft rave sirens, some deft hip-hop scratching and a Public Enemy sample. In short, it's a load of fun. Normal Snuff Crew service resumes on the more considered "New Life". Featuring Rachel Row on vocals, it sees evocative keys wrapped around a pulsing bass and those tight, crisp claps that the duo has become synonymous with.

Joy Of Jealousy - (6:02) 118 BPM
Review: Mysteriously masked German duo Snuff Crew have been gathering a lot of attention this year, not least for their under-wraps live shows and commitment to jacking. This LP has been designed to showcase the secretive collab's fun side and right from the get-go beats are bouncing, synths are synthing and good time vibes are fizzing. Packed with old skool house flavours and punchy retro beats, each track is a joyous floorfiller fit for any club, be it shiny and chrome-clad or dank and fusty. German dance music doesn't have to be hard-edged. Get to know these two, they'll make you feel good.

Malice In Wonderland
Irresistible - (6:29) 119 BPM
Review: It sounds like something has gone very wrong here. Like the bastardisation of the fantasy story that Mr Statik refers to in the title, the latest Bpitch release sees minimal house turned on its head. "Opiate Galactic" operates against a stripped back framework, but the accompanying vocal that talks about heroin use reflects the dark side of club life. In a similar vein there's "Memoirs Of A Sexual Predator". On this occasion, a meaty bassline and a seemingly innocent vocal are used to document sexual prowess. Statik has a more innocent side too though, and "Irresistible", with its swirling synths and swaggering groove, is as sensual as a loved up first-time clubber.

The Birds
The Birds (Matthew Dear Remix) - (5:27) 110 BPM
Review: The US duo delivers a preview for their latest album. The title track occupies that middle ground between trance, ambience and downbeat that Telefon Tel Aviv have become known for as synths swell and climax and dreamy, seductive vocals unfold over crashing drums. Label owner Ellen Allien drops a dance floor-focused take on "Birds", with a sinewy bassline underpinning a warbling, squelchy acid workout. Mathew Dear chooses an entirely different approach; over a warm fretless bassline, Dear lets a wall of dreamy textures gush forth, propelling the dreamy vocals towards an inevitable climax. Finally, Cocteau Twins fans will be interested in "The Sky Is Black", as it features Robin Guthrie's deep tones, fused with trancey synths and glitchy rhythms.

Right Body Wrong Time
Miss You - (6:12) 110 BPM Hot
Played by: Axer Rouf
Review: As well as being a vocalist for peerless disco outfit Hercules and Love Affair, Aerea Negrot has a great sideline in more tech and dub-influenced songwriting. Following on from last year's debut single "All I Wanna Do", BPitch Control drop her latest collection of songs this week and they're a revelation. "Miss You" sees Negrot feed her vocals through a vocoder and duet with herself over a slow and sultry waves of synth pads, while "Right Body Wrong Time" channels the golden age of Chicago with her commanding vocals dipping in and out of a minimal-jack beat. "Childhood" is equally fascinating, with Negrot's swooping vocalisms strongly recalling Liz Frazer of the Cocteau Twins mixed with Grace Jones.

Review: The calibre of contributors to this remix album is a sign of the high regard that Bpitch boss Ellen Allien is held in. Aux 88 depart from their trademark electro sound for a tight, stabby techno take on "Ever", while Bodycode brings his eerie organ sound to the spacey "Dream", straddling this seemingly disparate mixture with snappy percussion. Meanwhile, Kassem Mosse delivers a beautiful, chiming bell and breathy vocal-laden take on "Our Utopie". There are also some fine left of centre versions, like Tim Hecker's organic ambient version of "Sun the Rain", John Roberts's gradually unravelling, tripped out melodic interpretation of "Should We Go Home", and the piece de resistance, the Ripperton take on "My Tree", which progresses from dense drums and foreboding trance riffs into soaring electro bass and epic indie guitars.

Review: In Chaim, Israel boasts a producer of genuine flair, quality and innovation. Alive, his debut album for long time employers Bpitch Control, is the equal to anything from Berlin, London or New York. What's more, there's a distinctive shuffle and melodic warmth that gives it real emotional resonance. This is electronic music that appeals beyond the confines of club dancefloors - it has that kind of timeless, far-sighted vibe that makes it a wonderful listen from start to finish. First and foremost, then, Alive is a proper album, with songs ("Wish", "Alive"), jolly instrumentals ("Popsky"), musical experiments (the strange pop-rock of "Robots On Meth") and stone-cold hits (the celebrated dream-like synth pop of "Love Rehab" and grandiose dancefloor throb of "U & Eye" and "Runaway Frequencies"). It gathers together diverse influences - synth-pop, German house and techno, nu-disco, ambient, even nu-jazz - and weaves them into something new and fresh. It's beguiling, bewitching and, most of all, beautiful. Don't miss out.
