Review: With its promise of "biomechanical ghetto-electro waveforms", there's a certain amount of paranoia attached to this full-length from Danish breakbeat producer Kim M. Sorensen. Yet there's also funk for days and, impressively, some curious musical twists and the odd sting in the tail. Contrast, for example, the Latin jazz-funk tinged positivity of "Shamanic Funk" and the clandestine fuzziness of "Moonbatron". The real piece de resistance, though, is closer "Fingers (of Funk Session)", an epic exploration of darkroom funk breaks that twists, turns, rises and falls over 13 minutes of heavyweight dancefloor goodness.

Featuring eight exciting creations, the vibes stretch from the soulful sample slicing of 'Step Up' from The Breakbeat Junkie and DJP and disco-infused melodic switches of 'Dancing Mood' from Turntill, Merlin & Crosby, to the the more euphoric synth tops and bubbling drums of Ewan Hoozami's 'Rock More' and more relaxed grooves of BadboE's 'The Suicide Thing'. For us the immediate highlights have to be the the reggae infused design of 'Meditation' from Leygo, the smooth patois vocal presence and from Richard Smiths on 'Fire Sound' from Illgorhythms and of course the crunchy drum design and writhing bass tones on Pecoe's 'Boom'. Review: As everyone expected, the latest in a long run of releases from the Breakbeat Paradise camp is an absolute belter as they unveil 'Closer To The Sun' from Ken. As a single it's a hip hop inspired thrill ride, built on hefty basslines and smooth drum work, immediately shouting "cool" at all who hear it. The bulk of this release comes via the remixes however, kicked off by Discobeta's subtle stripped back overhaul. We then hear Ursula 100 turn the track into an 80's inspired electro thriller before Minded & Forrest get super funky with their complete breakbeat redesign, packed with scratchy vocal slices and emotive horn sections. Review: Following a short break, we are very pleased to see Morlack back at it again, reunited with the team at Breakbeat Paradise for a fiery five track display of breakbeat brilliance. We kick off super punchy drum processing and groovy bass riffing of 'Papa Was', which kicks us off with some sample-heavy goodness, followed by the colourful instrumentation and uplifting textures of 'Closet Freak'. The intensity then increases as we jump into some skippy vocal techniques on 'Plastic Love', moving into the more sweeping textures and raucous drum arrangements of 'It Gets To Me'. Review: Upbeat, unpretentious nu-disco and disco-house are the order of the day here, much along the lines of Hed Kandi's mid-noughties Disco Kandi/Disco Heaven comps. 'Down The Block' itself foregrounds the classic 1979 Spoonie G "one for treble, two for the time" sample (as used by Grandmaster Flash on 'Adventures...' a few years later), and comes with re-rubs from Fort Knox Five (pacier and jazz-tastic) and Ross Go (cut-ups and scratches galore). Review: Let's hope Mr Bristow and Phil Ramocon have a designated driver; they're seriously intoxicated right about now. Oozing boozy style, Bristow's bass whips back and forth with the midrange electro sound that's similar to Featurecast while Ramocon gets his Edwin on with some really gutsy vocal business. Remix-wise B-Side adds a bit more oomph to the low end, J Sound switches up the smoothness with tinges of disco, DJ Clairvo injects some really nice sound steel string guitars and cosmic reverse effects while Jazz K Lipa closes the show on a future moombah flex. In short, there's enough toxicity here for us all to get drunk.
