Raw Substance EP
Raw Substance (original mix) - (6:24) 115 BPM Hot
Raw Substance (Eric Duncan remix) - (7:06) 120 BPM
Review: Swiss duo In Flagranti come to Mexican label Calypso with an EP packing two tracks in four mixes. The two originals start out in chugging electronic disco territory, 'Raw Substance' topping a rolling tribal backbeat and jungle noises with funk-style male "give me your love" chants early doors and indecipherable female snips later on, while 'Unfit & Toxic' treads a more stuttery, electronic path that takes it closer to Belgian new beat and EBM. Eric Duncan then gives the title track a surging, pulsing house/prog makeover with an added "mystery girl" vocal bite, while Fango push 'Unfit & Toxic' through the door marked 'dark room techno'

Iced Peaks
Iced Peaks Pt 1 (original mix) - (5:37) 116 BPM
Iced Peaks Pt 2 (original mix) - (5:51) 118 BPM Hot
Review: Linja has been extolling subversive club tracks with an 80s industrial tint and outernational sensibilities across labels like Malka Tuti, Serenades and TTFS, and now he shores up on Mexican label Calypso with an EP of dexterous, deviant dancefloor bombs. 'Iced Peaks' comes in two parts, covering an epic expanse as claps echo across great plains and brooding synths tease a dramatic narrative, reaching from a patient, evocative intro towards the more pronounced thrust of the main tune. 'Lame Saiginae' has a rough, boxy but mystical feel which could easily come from a late 80s Youth production, and then Pigmaliao comes bowling in with a remix which twists the original up into a feverish abstract of Detroit electro-techno.

Canticos
Canticos (original mix) - (6:48) 107 BPM
Criminal (original mix) - (6:38) 111 BPM
Review: Somewhere between deep club tracks ("Odessa"), new wave, post-punk and cosmic disco is Canticos, this five track EP by Mexican duo Idolos Futuros. Throwing down something hard, stripped back and tripped out in the acid laced "Il Ballo Di Iwonna", darker energy percussion takes hold in stand out cut "Criminal", next to the pumping industrial pop Italo of the lead cut. Canticos comes fitted with the one Salsa Fingers remix which sounds like a contemporary incarnation of Yello gone tropo. Calypso Canticos!

Niphodance
Niphodance - (5:23) 120 BPM
People Is Product (original mix) - (6:48) 117 BPM
Review: Russian newcomer Pavel Grachev, known professionally as Apollon Telefax, evidences a remarkable versatility on this four-track/five-mix EP for Mexico's Calypso Records. 'Niphodance' gets the ball rolling in classic-style acid house mode, before we take a left turn into angular indie-dance territory for 'People Is Product', which comes with a darker remix from Theus Mago that sits somewhere between techno, electro and breaks. 'Sodomiten' is then pretty much a straight-up techno affair (again with plenty of 303 squelch) before the EP's completed by the very distinctive 'Trance Party', a heavily electronic cosmic-Balearic workout that's topped with a doom-y gothic vocal.

Haria
Surin - (4:02) 89 BPM
Haria (original mix) - (4:43) 83 BPM
Review: Based out of Guadalajara, Mexico, Calypso Records as a label has slowly bubbled to the surface since appearing on the scene in 2017. Founded by Thomass Jackson and Inigo Vontier, the label gives a full debut and EP to French producer Kubebe out of Lille, gifting a high profiled remix from Thomas Von Party. Filled with rain, watery percussion and dripping field recordings in tracks like "Yonaguni" and "Surin", Kubebe indulges in a world of ambient and exotica that meets house music and new age styles. With more direct future funk and suggestive French electronic elements in "Angiyu", find some tougher disco industrialisms and new wave influences in the title-track given an tribal and rhythm centric 'Collapsing Lifestyle' remix by TVP.

Year 2020 - (5:29) 150 BPM
Moon Traveller - (5:29) 140 BPM
Review: Hailing from Mexico Inigo Vontier has graced a number of discofied house labels out there like Chloe's Lumiere Noire and Thomas Von Party's Multi Culti, but it was 2017 when the artist first emerged on Calypso, delivering the label it's third release. He returns to where it all began delivering an the Mexican imprint with a new age ambient album of EBM infused exotica journeying through sweet and subtle synths to organic soundscapes and otherworldly percussion. Expect broken beats and touches of jazz to heavily processed sine waves and harder drum machine aggression. A trip from start to finish.

Nicola Cruz - "Tu Recuerdo" - (5:01) 122 BPM Hot
FE - "Tarde O Temprano" - (4:52) 130 BPM
Review: Calypso are back with another clutch of exciting mavericks orbiting the weirder end of the contemporary club spectrum. There are minimal wave influences to be tacitly detected on Nicola Cruz's "Tu Recuerdo" as well as kind of stripped back acid freakiness, while in FE's "Tarde O Temprano" there's even more gritty, industrial tinged bite in the billowing surges of machine rhythms. Quixosis takes some wonderfully lilting traditional percussion and gives it a freaky treatment which makes for the kind of slow jam Weatherall would have wielded with aplomb. NTFL finishes this ear-snagging compilation off with the plaintive, Dembow-tinted "Vacio".

Sangoma EP
Sangoma (original mix) - (6:19) 115 BPM
Curse Go Back (original mix) - (6:16) 123 BPM
Review: When they first started putting on parties in London, the collective behind the Kolago Kult alias operated as Tales of Voodoo. Here they make their first step into music production with an EP of inspired musical fusions that expertly join the dots between West African drum tracks, South American percussion workouts and contemporary deep house. This blueprint is expertly explored on "Curse Go Back", where shuffling drums and chiming percussion hits rise above doom-laden bass and trippy spoken word samples, as well as on the heavier deep house exotica of "Sangoma". That track is given a throbbing, synth bass and rave stab-propelled makeover by Tyu, while the brilliantly named Colossio Dembow re-imagines "Curse Go Back" as a druggy slab of psychedelic nu-disco chug.

Baile EP
Confusion (original mix) - (6:52) 113 BPM
Baile (original mix) - (6:55) 115 BPM
Review: Lo-slung and punk-funk'd indie-dance from Inigo Vontier & Thomass Jackson's Calypso label here courtesy of ID UA - a Kiev-based producer who has previously presented promising works for the likes of Night Noise, Nein and Esthetique records. The 'Baile' EP begins in totally tripped-out psychedelic fashion with the afterhours delight of "Confusion", then the title track merges disorienting near acid melodies with mesmerising steel drum patterns to rather hypnotic effect overall - which is followed by a riveting rework by label-co-head Jackson which enters freefall with his tribal ritual vibes.

Tel Aviv Flavours
Niv Ast - "Rainey Heart" - (6:00) 114 BPM Hot
Rina - "Peppermint Bouquet" - (6:44) 117 BPM
Review: If this EP is to be believed then the sound of Tel Aviv is all about ultra-deep house and moody, leftfield electronica. Niv Ast's 'Rainey Heart' is a slow-building affair that wouldn't sound out place early doors in a Cattaneo or Digweed set with its complex, evolving percussion and low, constant synth drone. Rina's 'Peppermint Bouquet' is a deep tribal jam with a trippy, hazy feel, while Naduve's 'Hex Mex' is a slo-mo number that rides a lumbering rhythm with snatches of Arabic speech, birdsong and other off-the-wall sounds. Completing the EP is 'Marbel Arch' [sic] from Middle Sky Boom, another slow-moving, atmospheric chugger.

Orchid Flake EP
Orchid Flake (original mix) - (6:54) 121 BPM
Factura (original mix) - (7:10) 119 BPM Hot
Review: From the cold lands of Saint Petersburg, Mexican label Calypso welcomes to the family newcomers Radial Gaze. On this EP, the Russian duo makes clear that there is nothing icy about their music - on the contrary - their music is full of voodoo trance and mamba jamba. Features the exotic lo-slung groove "Orchid Flake, followed by the tripped-out punk funk of "Factura" and the powerful cosmic nu-disco jam "Eski". Finally label boss Inigo Vontier takes on the remix from the title track to peak hour times with a hypnotic bass line and psychotic modular synths and percussion.

Nada Nada (original mix) - (6:05) 105 BPM
Reyerta (original mix) - (4:43) 114 BPM
Review: 13 months after wowing us with a Multi-Culti style druggy disco debut on Disque-Discos, Daniel Aristidez finally delivers his second salvo via another fast-rising Mexican label, Calypso. He begins in similar fashion, wrapping breathy female vocalizations around a chugging, tribal-tinged groove on the atmospheric and ear-pleasing "Nada Nada (Original Mix)", before layering up the drum machine hits, tribal vocals and Latin hand percussion on EP highlight "Reyerta (Original Mix)". Aristidez navigates a course through feverish Amazonian rhythms, raw analogue bass and psychedelic electronics on the superb "Ecoca", while Simple Symmetry brilliantly re-imagine "Nada Nada" as a bustling and percussive chunk of Middle Eastern disco delight.

Moto
Moto - (6:39) 110 BPM
Fe - (5:41) 105 BPM
Review: Monterrey's new kid on the block, Colossio, EP on Calypso is an inmerssion into this artist's world of influences. From kraut-rock to mexican folklore passing trough electronics, Colossio takes us on a journey inside his head and mind. "Moto" sets the stage with misterious guitars and trancey synths while "Fe" it's more of a robotic percussion trip. "Ansia" it's a more dance-floor oriented track while still mantaining the experimental spirit of the whole EP. On remix duties, Newcastle's latest global export, Man Power, channels the Stooges and the New York dolls for a sleazy Glam Rock version of the title track. You will also find two digital bonus tracks including Jakarta based Jonathan Kusuma's remix of Moto.

Wirikuta
Wirikuta - (6:32) 113 BPM
Marakame - (6:40) 117 BPM
Review: INigo Vontier delivers the third take of Calypso Records. Inspired by a local mexican tribe called the "Huicholes" or "Raramuris", Vontier delivers three tracks full of hypnotic rythms and ritual chants accompanied by Dreems on remix duties. To begin the ritual, "Wirikuta" will take you to a higher state of consciousness with Huichol chants and horns. As a wake up call "Marakame" will hit you in the guts with a straight forward drumbeat and sharp synths. "Maxa" does the work for a mental trip with chants that comes and go with psychedelic guitars on top. To finalize the ritual, aussie wizard Dreems comes with a more foward version of "Wirikuta" that somehow mix a new age feeling with the tribe vibes. On top of these four tracks, the label offers us two digital only tracks which should definitely not be missed.

Head Rejection
Head Rejection (original mix) - (6:37) 115 BPM
Witzelsutch (original mix) - (6:50) 120 BPM Hot
Review: After kicking off with a strong various artists release, Mexican label Calypso Records returns to showcase the talents of Argentine producer Thomass Jackson, who has previously been spotted on Gomma amongst other labels. "Head Rejection" takes on a ghoulish 1970s vibe that sports a little schlocky horror and a little spaghetti western in its discoid grooves, while "Witzelsutch" feels equally vintage but with a more cosmic lilt to its oddball tones. "Creepy PC" gets more of that noirish goodness lurking around the mix, and then Boot & Tax come on board to remix "Head Rejection" with a heads-down tribal patter that keeps the atmosphere of the original intact.

Mendrix - "Tramsitions" - (7:51) 92 BPM
Colossio - "Esta En Mi" - (5:18) 110 BPM
Review: It's not often we get an insight into the electronic music of South America, so all hail the arrival of Calypso from Mexico's Inigo Vontier and Argentina's Thomass Jackson. The tracks featured certainly strike a unique chord, with Mendrix weaving a seductive, noirish tale full of brooding guitar and slow ticking drums, while "Colossio" takes on a darkwave tone on the wonderfully creepy "Esta En Mi". The label bosses carries on with Jackson's "Fantomas" sporting a sharper dancefloor sensibility without ever resorting to obvious tropes. Vontier rounds the EP out with the weirdo boogie throwdown of "Namaste", sure to pique the interest of anyone locked into the sound coming out of the speakers.
