Gunshot EP
Review: Sometimes in life, what we need is a little bit of energy injected into our day to day, which is exactly why Chip Butty have lasted so long at the top of the UK bassline game. This latest selection from Sekt-87 is yet another fantastically fun delving into the grizzly realms of 4x4 music, with 'Gunshot' providing us with a gnarly warbling synthesizer lead to kick us off in style. From here we find ourselves exploring the realms of a more post-niche sound, with 'Gremlins' combining a more classic style of sound design with up to date rhythmic layering, alongside 'Within You', a monstrous bass racket, pushed forward by it's intrusive LFO lead, adding that extra touch of oomph as this one rounds to a close.

Stormaz (Remix EP)
Review: The legacy that Chip Butty holds within UK bass music is pretty outstanding at this point, pushing their sound forward come rain, sleet or shine. This latest box of fun sees Phatworld unleash a potent new single by the name of 'Stormaz', a composition jam packed with dancefloor energy, lethal synthesis and catchy Stormzy samples from the off. This is a release that is all about the remixes however as we see a top quality host gather to get involved. Firstly, Dr Cryptic gives us an electrifying overhaul, followed by Burt Cope's niche-inspired 4x4 recreation and Mintnite's explosive bassline bust out. Finally, the high tempo rhythms and sizzling LFO lines of Baadwrk's remix put the final touches on an excellent selection. Fire!

Let You Get To Me EP
Review: There really aren't many things better than a classic, old school bassline wobbler, which is why we were thrilled to see this new rave-ready selection from Kegone land on the legendary Chip Butty Records this week. We kick off with 'Let You Get To Me', a vibrant singalong number, with a ticket festival season slapped right across the front of it with its bright LFO designs and uplifting melodic structures. To add some extra sauce to proceedings, Thorpey gets involved right off the bat with a high energy recreation of this one, before we dive into the super punchy 4x4 drum pattern ups of 'Classical Music', complete with more fabulous bass work. Finally, we round off with the more minimal breakdowns of 'Subzero Stylee', putting the finishing touches on a project we cannot wait to hear in the dance!

Calling EP
Review: As always with the Chip Butty team, we knew we were in for a high energy run out as soon as this new collection from Mintnite dropped into the store, featuring five potent creations. Showcasing the best in original bassline flavour, we kick off with the title track 'Calling' alongside S4, which deploys a wibbling lead bass synth to meet S4's toasted vocal. Next, the grizzly synthesizer designs of melodic chimes of 'Screamer' are thrown into play, followed by 'Savage', a scatty sizzler that unleashes a lethal bass sound to accompany Sarge's catchy vocal lines. Finally, 'Meal Deal' combines the old and the new for a super high energy bassline stomper, followed by the instrumental mix of 'Savage' to put the finishing touches on a top notch body of work!

Chip Shop Vol 3
Various
Review: As one of the most established, original sounding labels in the bass scene, we are very excited to dip into the latest Chip Butty compilation project as they unveil the third edition of 'Chip Shop'. The release features nine scorching originals, showcasing both the new and the old as we see established named such as Dr Cryptic and Dr Oscillator team up with the likes of newer faces like Harry Tremlett and Liam Bline for one hell of a selection. For us, the clear highlights of this one have to include the super crunchy drum shuffles and grizzly bass textures of DJ Airmax's 'Number One Fan', along with the smooth yet hard hitting LFO's of 'Run Wi D Riddim' from KegOne.

Chips & Curry Sauce
Played by: Mr Brainz, Tik&Borrow
Review: As one of the most prominent forces in the northern world of niche bassline music, Chip Butty have delivered us yet another tasty feeding of 4x4 heat here as they bring in Sample Junkie for three explosive original creations on 'Chips & Curry Sauce'. We kick off the party with the ominous synth layerings and scattered beats of 'Odin', before taking the grooves down a more neurotic route on 'Bad Boy Trip'. From here we move into the last of the three tracks entitled 'Get Wrecked', which between a contrasting triplet based intro and sharp LFO led 4x4 breakdown provides the project with the perfect final touches.

Outer Space EP
Played by: Mr Brainz
Review: Let's get to wrk: Russian roustabout Baadwrk makes his official EP debut on the ever-tasty Chip Butty. If you've followed his free downloads, you'll already know the drill: 4x4 nastiness with raw dollops of unpasteurised funk. "Outer Space" is a straight up grimy bassline stomper, "Can't Deny" takes a little R&B sass and murks it with midrange rust, "Prince" plays the joker card with its sinewy reverse warps, eerie eastern calls and classic jacking drum arrangement while "Systematic" shreds up for the finale in the grizzliest way possible. Baad to the bone.

Gangster EP
Played by: Tik&Borrow
Review: Sheffield's own Sekt-87 and Chip Butty Records join forces on this one for a powerhouse project, featuring four classic bassline originals. We start off with the speed garage influenced sounds of the title track 'Gangster' which kicks the EP off perfectly. Next up, the more gritty, distortion lead arrangement of 'Middle Finger'. After this we roll smoothly into 'Massive' which is similar to the title track in its instrumentation but with a more rhythmic focus on crunchy half time hi hats. We then finish up with the moog-like madness of 'Don't Be Shy' which focusses on well rounded bass design and rapid fire drum rhythms. Overall this is a great return to one of Sheffield's premier bassline imprints for Sekt-87.

Void
Review: The latest from Sheffield based Chip Butty Records, is fat and throbbing, much like your arteries if you live by this imprints namesake. Introduction business as little known production outfit Foundry release their label debut, and what an entrance. 'Void' is seriously funky, it's pounding 4/4 beat is utterly infectious, the gaps are filled with mutated, twisting synths which will have you pulling all manner of faces. 'What' sees a soulful vocal upon its weighty bass although the track has a dark undertone, trust us when we tell you it'll get you moving. 'Treason' is the dirtiest track of the bunch, with its harrowing choral vox, warped sub, it's a little frightening. Dr Oscillator is on remix duties for 'Void' bringing it to more intense realms.

SpaceTek EP
Review: "SpaceTek" isn't just a cool sounding EP title... It fits the fresh fusion on Surreal's new Chip Butty supper perfectly. "Loving Me" takes the lead with a precision balance of house, tech and garage as it rolls into the future with absolutely no apology. Soulful but dominant are the key themes you need to be aware of here. "SpaceTribe" is a slightly broken, subtly tribal, massively futuristic workout that sounds like an alien's interpretation of 4x4 bassline. "Feeling" crashes us back down to the planet with a slightly more familiar Four40-style tech-garage dynamic. Barbed but beautiful - ready for take off?

Chip Shop Vol 2
Various
Review: The Sheff City boys are back with 12 high calorie teatime treats all smothered in basslines that are thicker than chippy gravy! If Chip Shop vol 1 announced Chip Butty Recs as the new leading light of the 4x4 Garage sound, then volume 2 suggests that they plan to keep the heat on high at the fryery. Founding members deliver the on-point bangers that we have come to expect from them but it is the newcomers that bring the real sizzlers here; Rico Tibbs ascends to the skies with uplifting rave pianos on "Warning" Judge Chucky draws for the distortion on breakbeat-techno-bass hybrid "Customer Service". While Rolls Royce opts for an old school flex that we would love to see revived this summer festival season. Not a single dud spud in the batch!

Chips N Gravy EP
Review: There's all kinds of posh nosh in the world but sometimes nothing hits that spot like a good old chip butty. The label of same name serve up similar musical carbo concoctions all the time. Here though they enter the arena of Chips N Gravy (well, the musical equivalent). As a six-track split EP with three tracks each, the best of Sammy Virji's offerings include the sheer jump up hedonism of "Do Me A Favour" and the skippy 4x 4 mayhem of "Oh My". Dr Cryptic's highlights include the diva house influenced chaos of "Bubbles" and the compressed fizzy madness of "Clown Hunter".

Complete EP
Review: UKG power grooves: having elevated from fire edits on Soundcloud to a pro releases in recent years, Shaun Dean continues to flex his slick sonic skills on Dr Cryptic's ever-tasty Chip Butty. "Complete" struts with a certain amount of garage sass while remaining underpinned by a nuclear bass riff, "Top 5" is a much leaner affair with its strutting 4/4s and moaning, almost weeping bass. Elsewhere "4 Me" balances a rich vocal hook with eyes-down bass tones and distant synth stabs and "Area 51" rolls with an almost classic rave Warp 91 style feel. Covering all styles and corners, this EP is more than a clever title.

RS Turbo EP
Review: Dr Oscillator goes way back with his pal Dr Cryptic's Chip Butty label. Here he returns to the source with a sizzling four-track mission statement, the RS Turbo EP. The title tracks kicks things off with some lively 4 x 4 and percolating bass notes, "Haunted Bungalo Riddim" meanwhile, gets more serious, taking some seriously deep wobble bass on board. Elsewhere "Roundhouse" is some attitude-heavy dubby mayhem and "415" finishes up with lean and mean fast beats, digi bleeps and quirky melodies. Fresh sounds!

The Shakedown EP
Review: Pure, unadulterated filth, that's what this Wittyboy exclusively deals in. We bet he chuckles demonically with the knowledge of the bass-induced mayhem that follows him in his wake. Here the mischievous Londoner returns with three new punch lines for the mighty Chip Butty. First up "Shakedown" is all about setting the tone with some classic 4 x 4 bounce, next "Back-Up Plan" deals out some seriously nasty staccato breaks and finally there are dancehall MC vibes added to the skippy beats of the purely evil "Warlord". Witty? This is no laughing matter!

Skippy EP
Review: Sheffield's Dr Cryptic has made a home for himself at the Chip Butty label and, if we're honest, we love what he's done with the place. The bass playa is up and knocking around with "Skippy", a UK garage track with a wobbling, moaning piece of bass fit for a low-riding dubstep tune. There's a heap of remixes of the tune: Phatworld plays with the bass and wobbles it to its very limits, Rico Tubbs goes deeper and dubbier on the percussion muscle, Vital Techniques distorts the low frequencies, and Dr Oscillator adds a little old-school flavour to the equation.

Old Timers EP
Review: This new split EP courtesy of the cheeky Chip Butty crew sees two leading underground producers, Kanji Kinetic and Dr Cryptic, each submit two of their finest for our listening pleasure. The former squares up tough with a pair of strong contenders - the vintage rave samples paired with modern 4 x 4 vibes of "Morning Sickness" and "The Immortals": all celestial synth clouds and warehouse bounce. The latter proves he's no wallflower either by delivering the buzzsaw speed-bass of "Bronson The Hedgehog" and the absolutely pounding wobble of "Dirty Like Your Sister". Fierce stuff!

Chip Shop Vol 1
Various
Review: Having recently celebrated their tenth release, Sheffield's Chip Butty have now rounded up the cream of their roster for Chip Shop Vol 1. There are nine bangers featured here, all promising 'hard 4x4 beats mashed with twisted basslines'. They're not wrong either: highlights include label stalwart Dr Cryptic's pounding garage-step sing-a-long "Dirty Dot", the doomily orchestrated wobbler "Marching Powder" by Sekt 87 and the menacing speed garage of "Rude" by Little Mesters.

Smithfield EP
Review: To mark the tenth release from Sheffield's finest, Chip Butty, the label have paired up Little Mesters and Dr Cryptic and strictly instructed them to deliver some 'hard 4x4 bass music'. Well they've come out fighting, albeit with some sparks flying, with six tracks spread over the EP. LM highlights includes the horror-bass pounder "Buzzin" and the snarling 4x4 prowler "Work". Our faves of the good Doctor include the demented disco meltdown "C-Word" and the end-of-the-world fuzz-out "Ph Derkhead". Dark, in a good way.

Dr Who? EP
Review: Sheffield's Chip Butty label returns with its latest unmissable dose of bass, with label owner Dr Cryptic delivering three tracks alongside another trio of low-end heaters from Dr Oscillator. Brilliantly titled the Dr Who? EP, it sees Dr Oscillator deliver the digidub-flecked bass of "BIG", the frantic sub workout of "Cocaine" and dark, sinister stripped-back sounds of "Mandem". Dr Cryptic's contributions are on the much ruder end of the bass scale, with "I Don't Care", a peak time slice of 4/4 featuring red alert sirens, "Rudebwoi" a vortex of churning bass and killer vocals and "Gibbo" another tune guaranteed to mash up the dance with its frequencies. Essential stuff!

Vulcan EP
Review: Dr.Cryptic's Chip Butty Recordings is a Sheffield-based label focusing on all underground dance sounds: from garage to UK funky and bass, and it has been on a high since its first EP back in 2011. This time, Dr.Cryptic himself teams up with newcomer Kommon for a four-track bombshell, ranging from two-step to more housey realms. Kommon's "Kariboo" is a shaking, no nonsense jacker whereas "Outfitter" goes deeper into the bass medley. Dr. Cryptic touches down with "You" and "RoboJim", two bouncy and immediately alluring pseudo-garage clusterbombs - Chip Butty in it for the win!

Sheff Ep
Review: Dr Cryptic has been knocking out forward thinking bass music for ten years now and is a well-respected player on his local Sheffield scene. Releasing through his own (and spectacularly named) Chip Butty label, this homage to his hometown is a blisteringly thrilling three tracker. "Aggy" sums up that heady Friday night vibe with 4 x 4 beats, wobble heavy basslines and ravey stabs. "Tuff" is even tougher with pounding sub bass, evil synths and digital bleeps galore. The best is kept til last though, with "Girlfriend" almost adding an element of funk to a killer male vocal and melodic pads.
