Chopshop

Chopshop Music is a label renowned for its disco, funk, house, hip hop, soul and jazz delights. It was founded by George Kelly aka DJ Butcher in Athens (Greece) in 2009 with the intention to reignite and rework old school sounds with a modern twist for the dancefloor. The label began its journey by cutting tracks exclusively on vinyl, but as it grew, it began bouncing out digital releases and in 2012 its sister label Our Records was born. Chopshop has so far seen releases from artists including: Groove Armada, Greg Wilson, Rayko, Capitan Futuro, Vaudafunk, Dave Gerrard and a number of stand-out tracks from DJ Butcher himself.

Chopshop Music Turns Me On Vol 2
Capitan Futuro - "Love Me Crazy" - (5:47) 112 BPM
Dave Gerrard - "Twisted Message" (DJ Butcher mix) - (5:45) 101 BPM
DJ Butcher - "However Do You Want Me" - (5:09) 104 BPM Hot
Ill Advised - "Superstition" - (5:18) 98 BPM
Review: With a sly wink and a beckoning wave of the hand, Chopshop invite us into their boudoir for another seductive trip into slinky rework territory. As usual, many bases are covered. Captain Futuro kicks things off with "Love Me Crazy", a slo-mo disco-flecked hip-hop head-nodder. Label supremo DJ Butcher turns Dave Gerard's "Twisted Message" (a sneaky bootleg version of the Furious Five classic) into a disco funk-breaks smasher, before laying down some revivalist rare groove fun in the shape of his own "However Do You Want Me" (a rework of Soul II Soul's "Back To Life"). A decidedly sensual package is completed by the misty-eyed headiness of Ill Advised "Superstition" (yep, a remake of that "Superstitition").

DJ Butcher - "Music Turns Me On" (Greg Wilson Re-Touch) - (8:11) 136 BPM Hot
Review: By now, we should all know what to expect from re-edit/mash-up/rework specialists Chopshop; namely the kind of sophisticated, floor-friendly concoctions that appeal to both geeks and party-starters alike. This split EP features plenty more material to tickle the fancy of DJs, from the Clav-heavy disco groovery of Ill Advised's "Inside Out" (a smart Odyssey cover) and block party disco-funk of Captain Futuro ("Booty Express"), to the needless-but-fun Indeep cut-up "In The Mix" by Dave Gerrard. Best of all, though, is the fluid re-touch by Greg Wilson of DJ Butcher's "Music Turns Me On", a sweet cut-and-paste effort that's pitched just right.

Review: Stafford's Dave Gerrard has been around for over 30 years so you can trust the DJ on this one. He's back on his usual stomping ground for more disco goodies on DJ Butcher's Chopshop out of Athens, Greece. He first takes the knife to the Jackson 5's "Dancing Machine" on "Generation 5" (great edit this one!), then he turns in an edit of a proper soul funk classic on "Repeat The Funk" (any guesses?) but finally he gives a Bill Withers classic a makeover on "You Got The Stuff". Class!

Review: The Chopshop juggernaut - driven by DJ Butcher - shows no signs of slowing down. Here we have Jammin, a bulging compilation express featuring 12 sizzlers by many label favourites. There's a lot to boogie to here, and it'll all get the job done, but the best include Alkalino's cheeky house remake of Prince's Get Off ("23 Positions"), Jayl Funk's sensuous electro-boogie bomb "Do It Baby" and Butcher's own rework of Rockwell's '80s office party fave "Somebody's Watching Me". Basically all your party worries will be sorted in one with this package!

Review: George Kelly AKA DJ Butcher - a fine Greek purveyour of soul, funk and boogie edits - is back with another collection of block rocking beats. No guessing who he samples on "Slim Shaddy" over a low slung funk groove. "Happy Moog" goes funky house, utilising that Pino D'Angio sample, and damn well. "You Dont Stop" is a good re-edit of Tom Tom Clubs "Wordy Rappinghood", "Need Some" is a hi-HRG version of "Hot Stuff" and if that wasn't enough, "Black Jeans" is a cheeky remix of you guessed it; Billy Jean by MJ. This collection of hot tracks are all you need for the next hoe down!

Staying true to his heart he album delivers 11 tracks of what he does best - expert disco scalpel jobs. Highlights include the retweaked Eric B & Rakim/Coldcut jam "Music Just Turns Me On", the six-minute, string laden clap along "Turn It Up" and the squelchy funk grooves of "No Taboos".

Review: Clash Of The Titans here, with Clapham house heroes Groove Armada having their back catalogue given a good seeing to by Manchester's tape-wielding disco maniac, Greg Wilson. It's quality from the get go, starting with "The Girls Say" now reworked into an awesome early 80s synth funk workout that would make Rick James proud. "DIY Disco" is celebratory retro electro-disco at it's finest, while "Love Sweet Sound" is a happy-sad cowbell disco journey of immense proportions. Finally we end proceedings on old skool electro tip with 'Save Our Souls" sounding like a vocodered alien invasion.

Review: Re-edit heavy hitters Chopshop are back following their recent killer Greg Wilson/Groove Armada EP, and the big guns are out in force. Andrew Clarke is first up with "My Desire", an exotic funk bass and shimmering grand piano orgy. Then Yam Who? arrives at the party armed with "Quested": an immense synth-boogie looper that will slay you without even trying. Not to be outdone, DJ Butcher's "The Future Is Ours" risks weirding out the dancefloor with its twisted leftfield funk, and succeeds (possibly due to the dog barking bit). Lastly Appo ends with a classic: an arpeggiated disco cover of Chain Of Fools.

Review: Classic b-boy business from start to finish, Tom Drummond steps forward with a slice of premium party breaks that sits somewhere between Ugly Duckling and Abdominal. A flavour array ensues as we're bombarded with creative twists; the scratch-heavy, breakdance-ready chops of the Cuts edit, the neat sweet organ blasts of DJ Butcher's sexy disco twist and DJ Ace's serious attention to detail on the drums all score high on the funk-o-meter. Flipping the bird has never been so essential.

Review: The subtitle of this album tries to downplay the talent of this rising re-edit producer, but the truth is that these cuts are anything but ill-advised. Chopshop label boss DJ Butcher wouldn't put out a record if it wasn't any good and besides, he's not known for his bad advice. There are 12 disco gems here to explore, highlights include the sparse, teched-out soul-grooves of Alain Toussant's rare gem "Night People, the deep and woozy Balearic funk of "Go Donny Go" and a delicious electro-funk-pop version of "Inside Out", as made famous by Odyssey.

Review: To mark the fifth anniversary of his re-edit imprint ChopShop, label owner DJ Butcher now presents his long awaited debut long player, "The Breaks". It's an ambitious project that took at least a year of deep digging, sourcing, remastering and editing. It was a labour of love of course, and this album has clearly been crafted with lots of love - with plenty of newly restored and delicately tweaked rare '70s funk gems, including the much-sampled bassline of "That's Right", the laser-tom drum assault of "Disco Owl" and the spacey Californian yacht rock of "Breakdown".

Review: There's something pleasingly old-fashioned about DJ Butcher's approach. Steadfastly committed to toasty, feelgood grooves, his productions veer from hip-hop influenced cut-and-paste creations to straight-up edits and sample-heavy blends. You'll fittingly find all three styles here, from the pleasingly sweet feelgood electrofunk grooves of "Disco Nite", and sample-heavy boogie bounce of "Ef U En Kay", to the "To Be Real" biting jazz-funk niceness of "Real Brother". Even better is the Rhodes-laden deep boogie-funk headiness of "Where's The Funk", which fittingly boasts some heavy percussive breaks and killer old school vocal samples.

Here we get four different artists all delivering some seriously dubbed out sonic adventures. Voodoo Whiskey goes first with the seriously cool, low-slung funk haze of "Cairo", while DJ Ace's "Viva La Raza" manages to combine Balearic beats with very light reggaeton vibes. Situation take it further with a totally toasted version of The Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb", whilst the label boss himself wraps up things with the laid back, glistening electro-funk of "No Taboos".

Review: Having previously included Vaudafunk tracks on a number of their multi-artist EPs, Chopshop has decided it's time for the Italian producer to serve up a full EP of his own. Flowered Shirt & Sunglasses begins with "Zora", a deliciously cheery and cheeky revision of a little-known European disco smasher from the Italo-disco era. He cannily uses extended filtered sections to emphasize key moments in the decidedly cosmic cut. "Love Is Psychedelic" is a bustling, string-drenched disco stomper, while closer "1999" sees him make merry with a lesser-known version of Pigbag's low-slung punk-funk classic "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag". When the famous horn line kicks in, there will be bedlam out on the dancefloor.

Review: ChopShop Digital barely deviates from its' well-worn formula, which involves serving up multi-artist EPs full of tried-and-tested reworks. Happily, they're at it again here. BnC kicks things off with the break-driven funk shuffle of "Good Times Roll", before Woodhead & Hebegebe raise the temperature with the heavy funk-goes-Italo-disco surge of "Pony Up". West Country scalpel fiends Situation serve up the dusty soul sweetness of "Change For A Coke", while Senior Citizens attempt to outdo them with the similarly luscious and soulful "The Perfect Plan". Gradient Logic - "What About The Groove" - (7:04) 116 BPM
Review: This latest split EP from the ever-reliable party-starters at Chop Shop introduces two new faces to the roster: the previously unheard "DJ S", and sometime Vintage Music, Disco Fruit and Rebel Hearts types Gradient Logic. The former delivers a bouncy, slightly toughened up re-interpretation of Deodato's Brazilian disco-funk classic "Night Cruiser" (here re-titled simply "Cruiser"), while the latter get knee deep in Funkadelic on the kaleidoscopic synth-funk bump of "What About The Groove". Elsewhere, label talisman George Kelly drops a future re-edit anthem in the shape of the punchy, disco/boogie fusion "Feet Start Moving", and Vaudafunk teases out a killer saxaphone line on the distinctly big and bold "Sugar".

Review: Stroud collective Situation has long been among the most reliable re-editors on the nu-disco scene. Further proof that they barely put a foot wrong arrives in the form of "Simple Pleasures", a deliciously jazzy chunk of breezy dancefloor goodness that effortlessly combines glistening guitars, warm organ stabs, shuffling soul breaks and a life-affirming female vocal. For those who can take or leave the vocal, the boys from the Five Valleys have included an excellent instrumental version. There's a tougher, more upbeat remix present, too, with Chop Shop boss George Kelly turning the swinging original into a metronomic disco-house chugger. While good, it lacks a little of the alluring looseness of Situation's original version.

Review: George Kelly's Athens-based Chopshop celebrate 15 years in the game with this best-of compilation that takes in cuts from the likes of Groove Armada (via Greg Wilson), Situation, Andy Bach, Bodie Lee, HP Vince and more, many of which - as is entirely in keeping with the label's name, of course - draw heavily on source material from the past. Dave Leatherman & Bruce Nolan kick us off with 'Sunny Side Up', which reworks Osibisa's 'Sunshine Day', and from there on out it's basically a non-stop disco/disco-house riot, with Bodie Lee paying tribute to Inner City on 'Let Me Take You Dancer', Wild Cherry chopped and looped to glorious effect by Delly on 'Movin' To The Groovin' and Alejandro Maria stealing the day with 'A Lot To Live For', which should really be called 'Stabs To Die For'.

Label boss DJ Butcher kicks off proceedings with the shimmering bass odyssey of "Paradise", and next is JMRS' new cover of The Stones' "Miss You" which livens up this disco-rock classic with perky guitar and a Lionel Richie-esque vocal, finally the slinky female fronted funk of "Good Time Groove Train" leads us into Ronin's stormin electro-disco remix of "Miss You" - easily the coolest joint on this excellent EP.

Review: Tom's cheeky productions have surfaced on a plethora of cheeky edit labels including Drum Beats, Chunky Traxx and Shak. However he seems to be settling in with the infamous Chopshop and here he's stays put for a hip hop fuelled corker. "Rebounce" is a slinky funky breaks number coupled with Timbaland's rap from Aaliyah's "Are You That Somebody" for a more hands-in-the-air party anthem. If, for some bizarre reason, it fails to work, then call in the does-what-it-says-on-the-tin "No Diggity Edit" which will destroy all and sundry and then some!

Review: After honing his skills with a series of well-regarded re-edit releases, DJ Butcher changes tack here, delivering a devilishly sweet fusion of deep electrofunk, B-boy breaks and old skool hip-hop vocals. Clearly designed as a tribute to late '70s/early '80s hip-hop (check out the Sugarhill Gang/Furious Five style vocals), "Sol Wrap" has enough about it to suggest that it will easily slip into contemporary party sets. There's an instrumental, too, for those who can't be doing with the vocal, while Leftside Wobble offers up a slick remix that replaces the bass with pulsing vintage synth hits. The Latin-flavoured Timewrap Remix is pretty tasty, too.

Review: Three satisfying slices of nu-skool funk/hip-hop here from Greek label Chopshop Music, who celebrate their 10th birthday this year. 'Pineapple Soup' will appeal to fans of artists like The Aspects, Speedometer or Dr Meaker with its male vocal, female cut-ups, wukka-wukking geetar and exuberant brass (including a very familiar phrase borrowed from a disco-era smash by Rod Stewart), 'Get The Funk Out Ma' Face' is a more down 'n' dirty funk jam with JBs aspirations and a chanted chorus-cum-breakdown, while 'La Da Da' plays us out on a soundtrack-y note with cascading hand percussion and a fat, muffled bassline.

Review: Having already followed up his debut EP with a full-length collection of "ill advised edits and reworks" (May's Heads), rising re-edit star Sam Palmer drops a second compilation of tasty sample work. The 12 tracks that make up Legs are pleasingly varied, veering from the baked, head-nodding slo-mo disco-house of "Breakin' Out", to the sleazy, late night disco bounce of "Cool Cold Claudia", via the Clav-happy soul sweetness of "Someday I'll Be A Player", and the hard-wired disco-funk heaviness of "Rhythm Slaves (Dub)". He also finds space for a chunk of disco-reggae-goes-acid (the skanking "Selecta-ta-ta-ta") and the high-octane disco grooves and fluttering flute solos of "Queen of Heaven".

Review: A decade has now passed since George Kelly established the Chopshop imprint as an outlet for goodtime grooves, sneaky reworks and club-ready re-edits that blur the boundaries between disco and house. To celebrate the fact, he's gathered together some of his label highlights on an expansive compilation. It's arguably best enjoyed via his action-packed DJ mix, which is tucked away at the end of the collection, though DJs will delight at the sheer volume and quality of the unmixed cuts on offer. Our favourites include the rubbery bounce of HP Vince's appropriately titled "Funky Disco Party", Kelly's killer Marlena Shaw revision ("Raised In The Ghetto"), the bustling funky house pleasures of HP Vince and Dave Leatherman's "Back 2 The Old Skool (House Mix)") and the disco-rap goodness of Captain Futuro's "Club Warzone".

Review: On his last outing, Grecian producer George Kelly successfully joined forces with vocalist Andre Esput to showcase the soulful side of his output. Here, he's back in solo mode, returning to the Chopshop imprint he founded some years back. The Big McGhee doesn't take long to get into its' stride, starting as it does with a slamming, decidedly heavyweight house rework of Marlena Shaw's "Woman Of The Ghetto". Jimmy 'Bo' Horne rework "Spankbank" is similarly stomping, with Kelly expertly cutting up and rearranging the original's famous electric piano riffs over a bounding house groove. Finally, the title track delivers a tightened up, straightened out version of Francine McGee's infamously wild disco smasher "Feelin' Good".

Review: The latest offering from the Chop Shop camp aims to shine a light on a trio of up-and-coming re-edit artists. Polish producer Brick Fever made his debut on the label earlier this year, and here delivers two more party-starting highlights; the horn-heavy, synth-laden, straightened out anthem that is "Last Dance", and the smooth, soulful disco shuffle of "Stay With Me". Italian producer Ten Different also impresses with "Shake", a deliciously percussive, all-instrumental rework of the Jacksons' "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)", before joining forces with Vaudafunk for a cheery stroll though house-friendly disco pastures on the swinging "Orlando Magic".

Review: We're not quite sure who SAM PaLmER AKA SAMPLER is, but this debut EP for George Kelly's Chopshop stable is something of a winner. Palmer's default style is loopy, sample heavy and intense, sitting somewhere between the slamming disco-house cut-ups of Soundstream, and the baggier, slo-mo loop-jams of LTJ. It's a formula that frequently delivers fantastic results; check, for example, the slow-building brilliance of Steve Miller Band rearrangement "Super Fly Eagle", or the rolling, saucer-eyed dancefloor bliss of "One Night In Chaka". Elsewhere, the debutant gets jazzy on the woozy, Bossa-influenced deep house of "Night In Tunisia", before heading for low-slung Balearic disco pastures on "Body Bits".

Review: Having not only contributed to multi-artist EPs but also delivered a solo single of his own, it would be fair to say that Vaudafunk is now a fully paid-up member of the Chopshop family. There's naturally plenty of floor-friendly goodness to be found on Morning Munchies. Opener "Mornings", for example, is a near perfect example of how to successfully tool-up a swirling, string-laden, orchestrated disco bomb - think chunky house beats and just the right amount of production trickery - while "Piano Track" is a wonderfully breezy, sun-bright trip into jaunty piano house territory - all big riffs, rolling beats, extended breakdowns and looped disco strings. Clavinet-happy Italo-disco/house fusion cut "Munchies" completes a rock solid package.

Review: Spanish producers Angel Funke and Alex Brinken are experienced heads in the disco-house game. Here they join forces with an EP for party-starters Chopshop. Lead cut "What's The Colour" sets the tone, building a sparkling deep house/disco hybrid following a superb, cowbell and bongo-laden intro. It's based around a groove that recalls the late '90s productions of disco-house specialists Peppermint Jam. Funke's "Zombie" adds a little Afrobeat shuffle to the formula, building into a percussive frenzy via relentless organs and electric piano keys. The collaborative "Nu Funk A Go" slows things down, offering a spooky, smoky trip into classic trip-hop territory.

Review: Label regular Cazbee has hooked up with Chopshop boss himself, DJ Butcher, for a new three-track groove-fest. Title track, "You Don't Know", is a slow burner, coming across like The Scissors Sisters doing a 70s ballad...produced by Morcheeba. "Hyped Up" is more party-orientated fare, capturing a killer vintage funk sample, looped over an almost AC/DC-style 4/4 beat and adorned with rationed synth flourishes. Finally, "In Search Of Phenomena" is fast and furious disco-funk, with rolling bongos and a meaty bass synth riff, all punctuated with some effective action from the brass section.

The Californian is in a predictably warm and loved-up mood throughout, shuffling between the saucer-eyed, mellow jazz-funk loveliness of "Music Saved My Life", where fluttering flute solos and lazy guitar riffs wrap themselves around a sumptuous groove, and the near horizontal, Terry Callier style soul bliss of "How Can I Forget". Review: Sometime Springbokz, Solid State Disco and Smokin' Disco duo HP Vince & Dave Leatherman first popped up on Chop Shop seven months ago. Here, they return to the popular imprint with some serious Dancing Vibez. We're particularly enjoying opener "Indian Vibez", a sitar-heavy dancefloor roller peppered with sampled hip-house breakbeats, low-slung disco bass and intoxicating Asian melodies. Speaking of hip-house, you'll also find that flavour within the bouncy beats, tooled-up disco-funk loops and sweaty raps of peak-time smasher "Go Dance". To round off a fine, floor-friendly collection, the Dutch duo sticks a rocket under a sleek, string-laden New York disco anthem (slash pop hit). Strictly speaking, it didn't need doing, but there's no arguing with the peak-time power of their beefed-up revision.

Expect to hear anything from jazz, funk, hip hop and disco all the way to house, electro and big beat on this fine label. Here Kelly goes deep into sexy and groovy territory with his new EP "The Nudist Camp". The title track is a sunny and evocative disco jam that's perfect for Sunday open-air bliss: bring on the third (is that what we're up to?) Summer Of Love! Next up "Aquarian Dream" is a looped up funky house groover which is once again on the disco tip and at some points could almost pass for early noughties Hed Kandi or Defected: a compliment if there ever was one. Here on Tricky Situation he tackles the evergreen 1970s Ned Doheny classic Get It Up For Love, or rather a slowed down rework version, which ends up sounding like the Gypsy Kings jamming with some drunk cowboys. Ghosts of Venice step up first, skillfully re-arranging the delightfully camp and synthesizer-heavy, Italo-disco delight that is "Time & Space". HOLDTight do a good job adding some contemporary slow-house flavour to Jones Girls' classic "Nights Over Egypt", before Glintelletuali (try saying that after a few stiff drinks) offers up the throbbing, shirts-off, Italo-goes-to-Spain romp that is "Il Valeiro". Finally, Le Visiteur presents "The Player", a rising and falling disco-house chugger that boasts some seriously epic breakdowns and drops.

Review: For lovers of trad-style house, garage 'n' disco grooves, 'Soul Journey' has to be close to the top of this week's shopping list. Guitar flecks reminiscent of Donna Summer's 'Bad Girls' vie with shimmering Balearic boogie synths atop a walking bassline, while a spoken male counsels quite correctly that "if you have any aches and pains, or trials and tribulations... house music is the answer!", the overall effect sitting somewhere between The Sunburst Band and vintage Hayden Andr? productions. The accompanying 'You Get Me' is a more standard issue Negro-esque disco-houser, but still worthy of note thanks to some fine slap bass work.
