Chopshop

Chopshop Music is a label renowned for its disco, funk, house, hip hop, soul and jazz delights. It was founded by George Kelly aka DJ Butcher in Athens (Greece) in 2009 with the intention to reignite and rework old school sounds with a modern twist for the dancefloor. The label began its journey by cutting tracks exclusively on vinyl, but as it grew, it began bouncing out digital releases and in 2012 its sister label Our Records was born. Chopshop has so far seen releases from artists including: Groove Armada, Greg Wilson, Rayko, Capitan Futuro, Vaudafunk, Dave Gerrard and a number of stand-out tracks from DJ Butcher himself.

Review: DJ Butcher's excellent re-edit label Chopshop has entertained many different takes on disco, but has yet to tackle dub. Until now that is. Here we get four different artists all delivering some seriously dubbed out sonic adventures. Voodoo Whiskey goes first with the seriously cool, low-slung funk haze of "Cairo", while DJ Ace's "Viva La Raza" manages to combine Balearic beats with very light reggaeton vibes. Situation take it further with a totally toasted version of The Rolling Stones' "Under My Thumb", whilst the label boss himself wraps up things with the laid back, glistening electro-funk of "No Taboos".

Learn It From James Brown

Whatever Makes You Happy (radio edit) - (3:24) 123 BPM
Learn It From James Brown - (7:42) 123 BPM
Review: Mexico's Vintage People are best known to date for their re-edits of funk, soul and disco classics, but here they step up with two original productions. 'Learn It From James Brown' is a funk-dripping midtempo disco-houser, a jaunty bassline, insistent hi-hats and fluttering pads forming the backbone of its rump-shakin' groove while the sampled, spoken male vocal expounds on the merits of "bringing it back to the one". The accompanying 'Whatever Makes You Happy' then pushes further into out-and-out funk territory with its breakbeat and horn stabs, though the track's looping, repetitive structure means it's still one more for the house floors than the straight-up revivalist crowd.

Review: DJ Butcher's Chopshop is all about good times and party edits. Here they present a summery various artists EP, Ibiza Disco People, with the white isle firmly in mind. Vaudafunk & Stefano Gambarelli's "One Shot" kicks things off with some filtered diva soul vibes, next HP Vince tackles an Italo disco classic on "Ibiza People", Disco Donuts' present a fast paced disco-house jam and "Party People" which is all about the elastic bass loops, cowbells and claps. Lastly Lou Casablanca pumps some much needed disco steroids into the veins of "Love Affair", resulting in big, loose hi-hats, a thumping kick and strings aplenty.

George Kelly - "Superballin" (feat BNC) - (3:54) 110 BPM
Andy Bach - "Jump" - (6:42) 120 BPM
Review: There's something to please disco/nu-disco lovers of many persuasions on this four-track V/A from Greece's Chopshop label. Vaudafunk kick things off with the smooth n' classy disco-house of 'Nice To Antibes', before HP Vince gets more in-your-face and strutty with Telex-esque lead cut 'Disco Crypto'. George Kelly then drops the tempo on the decidedly Daft Punk-ish 'Superballin' - all vocoder vox and ruff, grinding bass - before Andy Bach delivers some fine discofied deep house with 'Jump', which makes good use of the classic Aretha "jump, jump, jump to it" sample. And, oddly, the very disparate elements add up to a rather satisfying whole.

Review: Having previously included Vaudafunk tracks on a number of their multi-artist EPs, Chopshop has decided it's time for the Italian producer to serve up a full EP of his own. Flowered Shirt & Sunglasses begins with "Zora", a deliciously cheery and cheeky revision of a little-known European disco smasher from the Italo-disco era. He cannily uses extended filtered sections to emphasize key moments in the decidedly cosmic cut. "Love Is Psychedelic" is a bustling, string-drenched disco stomper, while closer "1999" sees him make merry with a lesser-known version of Pigbag's low-slung punk-funk classic "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag". When the famous horn line kicks in, there will be bedlam out on the dancefloor.

My Hoodies - (5:29) 118 BPM
Review: Fresh from a surprise appearance on Reptile Disfunction, Vaudafunk returns to regular home Chopshop with two more reasons to be cheerful. He opens with "Love Alone", a deliciously pie-eyed disco through peak-time disco pastures rich in undulating strings, toasty bass, echoing female vocal samples and bouncy house drums. He changes focus a little on "My Hoodies", peppering a locked-in disco-house groove with suspenseful string samples, looped hip-hop vocal snippets and ear-catching synth solos seemingly lifted from a stone cold classic. It's heaps of fun and, like the track that precedes it, sounds like a genuine scene anthem in waiting.

Morning Stars - (6:50) 123 BPM
The Dancing King - (5:21) 123 BPM
Review: On this tasty EP, Chopshop regular Vaudafunk stands tall and showcases a trio of "Vertical Jams". First up is "Vertical Jam" itself, a storming disco-house treat smothered in "Shaft"-style Blaxploitation guitars, razor-sharp disco strings and a chunky, bass-heavy house groove. The heady, peak-time disco house vibes continue on "Morning Stars", a filter-heavy loop jam that contains a couple of killer breakdowns and drops, before Vaudafunk rounds off proceedings via the excitement-packed, peak-time-friendly stomp of EP standout "The Dancing King". This, too, contains plenty of filter-heavy, build-and-drop action, suggesting it will cause commotion when played at the right time.

Review: For his latest outing on Chopshop, label regular Vaudafunk has baked up some "Disco Pies" - a savoury treat that's more nourishing and sustaining than those "disco biscuits" we're always being offered by the moody blokes who hang out in the dark corners of clubs. For the main course he offers up "Cherry Pie", a filter-sporting bounce through cheery, horn-heavy disco pastures that's as delicious as, well, cherry pie. Arguably even tastier is second course "Erotique Disco", a low-slung, string-laden romp through over-the-top disco territory served hot with lashings of extra-thick cream. Yum!

Munchies - (4:59) 120 BPM
Review: Having not only contributed to multi-artist EPs but also delivered a solo single of his own, it would be fair to say that Vaudafunk is now a fully paid-up member of the Chopshop family. There's naturally plenty of floor-friendly goodness to be found on Morning Munchies. Opener "Mornings", for example, is a near perfect example of how to successfully tool-up a swirling, string-laden, orchestrated disco bomb - think chunky house beats and just the right amount of production trickery - while "Piano Track" is a wonderfully breezy, sun-bright trip into jaunty piano house territory - all big riffs, rolling beats, extended breakdowns and looped disco strings. Clavinet-happy Italo-disco/house fusion cut "Munchies" completes a rock solid package.

Review: George Kelly's Athens-based Chopshop celebrate 15 years in the game with this best-of compilation that takes in cuts from the likes of Groove Armada (via Greg Wilson), Situation, Andy Bach, Bodie Lee, HP Vince and more, many of which - as is entirely in keeping with the label's name, of course - draw heavily on source material from the past. Dave Leatherman & Bruce Nolan kick us off with 'Sunny Side Up', which reworks Osibisa's 'Sunshine Day', and from there on out it's basically a non-stop disco/disco-house riot, with Bodie Lee paying tribute to Inner City on 'Let Me Take You Dancer', Wild Cherry chopped and looped to glorious effect by Delly on 'Movin' To The Groovin' and Alejandro Maria stealing the day with 'A Lot To Live For', which should really be called 'Stabs To Die For'.

Review: There's a pretty obvious clue in the name as to what kind of music you're going to find here! What makes this compilation from Greek label Chopshop stand out, though, is that the usual suspects are, for once, notable by their absence: there are contributions from Tonbe and HP Vince, as well as label boss George Kelly, but many if not most of the artists involved here will be new names to many if not most listeners. As such, it's a collection that's well worth investigating, packing 15 uptempo tracks - largely original, if heavily sample-based productions, rather than re-edits - that are long on funk basslines, handclaps and cowbells. What's not to like?

There's a lot to boogie to here, and it'll all get the job done, but the best include Alkalino's cheeky house remake of Prince's Get Off ("23 Positions"), Jayl Funk's sensuous electro-boogie bomb "Do It Baby" and Butcher's own rework of Rockwell's '80s office party fave "Somebody's Watching Me". Review: Earlier in the year, Tom Drummond popped up on a Chopshop compilation with a suitably chunky, bass-heavy and funk-fuelled take on Blackstreet classic "No Diggity". Here he returns to the label with something slightly different: a pair of disco-centric mash-ups that cleverly combine elements of house, funk, soul and breaks. First up is "Burnin", a skipping and loose-limbed peak-time workout that wraps wild Hammond organ motifs, Loleatta Holloway vocal samples and hazy deep house chords atop a rubbery bassline and bustling drums. "Into My Veins" is even sweatier and energetic, with Drummond successfully cutting up vocal sections from a vintage Skipworth and Turner track over a chunky dub disco/disco house groove.

Review: Chop Shop return with another powerful party punch from three artists who've all established solid groove ties with the Greek imprint over recent years. There's a strong twang of the broken beat on both Ten Different and Levantine's offerings. The former digs deep for a little disco dust and break that comes out of nowhere and allows a whole gamut of percussion to enter the fray. The latter goes straight for a rusty old detuned synth rave hook and adds a little cosmic chug. Finally big pimping Vince closes shop with a sprightly filtered house jacker with big full-frontal vocal. Choppy choppy!

Now on its fourth outing, the series is as good as ever, this time featuring Situation's saucy half time space-grinder "Hot Meter", Butcher's own Fender Rhodes-fuelled boogie fest "The Charms Of Chamille", JMRS' killer Moroder-esque rework of "Money's Too Tight (To Mention)" and the deep, synth washes of closer "Daylight" by Andy Kidd.

The Johnny Disco EP, though, shows how at home they are with this label, providing us with an epic so ambitious, it's split into two mammoth parts. "Johnny Disco Part 1" is a light-headed raw disco jam, replete with flowing guitar licks, incessant percussion and loopy keys. "Part 2" ups the energy with disco party claps and new wave-inspired synth lines. "Maxi Disco" also continues with the electronic theme, being a thrilling Moroder-in-space Italo-disco bomb.

Review: Stroud collective Situation has long been among the most reliable re-editors on the nu-disco scene. Further proof that they barely put a foot wrong arrives in the form of "Simple Pleasures", a deliciously jazzy chunk of breezy dancefloor goodness that effortlessly combines glistening guitars, warm organ stabs, shuffling soul breaks and a life-affirming female vocal. For those who can take or leave the vocal, the boys from the Five Valleys have included an excellent instrumental version. There's a tougher, more upbeat remix present, too, with Chop Shop boss George Kelly turning the swinging original into a metronomic disco-house chugger. While good, it lacks a little of the alluring looseness of Situation's original version.

Review: We're not quite sure who SAM PaLmER AKA SAMPLER is, but this debut EP for George Kelly's Chopshop stable is something of a winner. Palmer's default style is loopy, sample heavy and intense, sitting somewhere between the slamming disco-house cut-ups of Soundstream, and the baggier, slo-mo loop-jams of LTJ. It's a formula that frequently delivers fantastic results; check, for example, the slow-building brilliance of Steve Miller Band rearrangement "Super Fly Eagle", or the rolling, saucer-eyed dancefloor bliss of "One Night In Chaka". Elsewhere, the debutant gets jazzy on the woozy, Bossa-influenced deep house of "Night In Tunisia", before heading for low-slung Balearic disco pastures on "Body Bits".

Review: Having already followed up his debut EP with a full-length collection of "ill advised edits and reworks" (May's Heads), rising re-edit star Sam Palmer drops a second compilation of tasty sample work. The 12 tracks that make up Legs are pleasingly varied, veering from the baked, head-nodding slo-mo disco-house of "Breakin' Out", to the sleazy, late night disco bounce of "Cool Cold Claudia", via the Clav-happy soul sweetness of "Someday I'll Be A Player", and the hard-wired disco-funk heaviness of "Rhythm Slaves (Dub)". He also finds space for a chunk of disco-reggae-goes-acid (the skanking "Selecta-ta-ta-ta") and the high-octane disco grooves and fluttering flute solos of "Queen of Heaven".

Review: The subtitle of this album tries to downplay the talent of this rising re-edit producer, but the truth is that these cuts are anything but ill-advised. Chopshop label boss DJ Butcher wouldn't put out a record if it wasn't any good and besides, he's not known for his bad advice. There are 12 disco gems here to explore, highlights include the sparse, teched-out soul-grooves of Alain Toussant's rare gem "Night People, the deep and woozy Balearic funk of "Go Donny Go" and a delicious electro-funk-pop version of "Inside Out", as made famous by Odyssey.

Review: Rising Dutch producer QUINTEN 909 hails from Den Bosch and has half a dozen or so previous releases under his belt, including outings on Armada Chill, Sleazy G and Groovetraxx. Now he comes to Greece's Chopshop with the simply gorgeous 'Can't Give You Up', a laidback and drifty jam with a fat bassline, heavily treated guitar chops, dreamy sax and some lovely lounge-y "la-la-la-la" chorused vox - it's not unreminiscent, in fact, of a certain Mr D. Lee in his mellower moments. There's an accompanying Radio Edit for those that have a use for such things - if you don't, then why deprive yourself? Blissful!

Review: The latest missive from the prolific Chopshop stable is a label debut. It comes from up-and-coming Mexican producer Oscar Levantine, who serves of a trio of house-friendly disco heaters. We're particularly enjoying opener "Nassau", which loops up key passages of a chunky, tropical disco-funk classic (yep, "Funky Nassau"), while dubbed-out vocal samples drift in and out of the mix. The similarly impressive "I'm Not In Love" makes use of similar production tricks, whilst throwing in a longer, filter-heavy breakdown to add a little build-and-release tension. Finally, the Mexican demonstrates his ability to make classic disco-house jams on bouncy closer "Dance".
