Review: Mike Shannon resurrects his John Shananigans alias for the first time since 2009! Returning to Circus Company once more, The Man With One Blue Shoe turns in two fresh numbers and a dub mix for 2021 that channels an explosive tech house sound that took over at the turn of the last decade. With a funky, almost electro swing groove in "Bounce The Blues", "One Blue Shoe" turns in a filtered version of the other with its noise-floor and background sounds stripped away for something techier and slightly more refined. Caught up somewhere between the two is the "Bounce The Blues (dub mix)" - a synthy, fun and tongue in cheek spin through some quality, analogue tech house from back in the day.

Review: Minimal's very own human beatbox returns! Bay Area legend and Circus Company stalwart Dave Aju serves up his new one "Love In Zero Gravity" where he puts down the microphone for once and lets the music speak for itself on this rough and tumble yet charming deep house cut. Similarly "Aubergine Dream" works some minimalist magic that's sure to work a treat at the afterhours with its arcane and hypnotic elements. Finally, the San Francisco veteran gets funky on the deep and sunkissed groove of "Gatadu" where he finally lends his much lauded voice into the mix.

Review: American songstress Dani Siciliano is house pioneer Matthew Herbert's longtime collaborator, wife and muse. In 2016, she released her self titled album which was co-produced by Gael Rakotondrabe on French imprint Circus Company. Here come some remixes from the album. David Okumu from Austrian band The Invisible hands in a fine rendition of "Sincerely" that goes minimal-pop by way of electronica, Sturm & Drang give "Gone Are Those Days" a deep and slinky tech house remix and finally the Bay Area prankster Dave Aju gives the track another go: his version going for some some dark minimal house flavour that's well suited to the afterhours.

Review: She's back! Matthew Herbert's longtime collaborator, wife and muse, Dani Siciliano, strikes out on her own for the first time in ten years since 2006's "Why Can't I Make You High". On "I'm The Question" she delivers some cute and infectious, pop-inflected experimentalism with her wonderful vocal delivery as always. There is an absolutely killer remix by Concrete Paris resident Ben Vedren; this is the kind of bass driven, stripped back house groove you could imagine rocking a heaving dancefloor at sunrise on the infamous boat party or Panorama Bar alike. No wonder the guy's released on the likes of Minibar and Silver Network. There's an accapella remix by Vedren also but don't be misled: this is actually a remix which fully utilizes the vocals but over a more restrained and reduced groove.

Review: Flabbergast is a new collaboration between Montreal legends Vincent Lemieux and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts. Just like their namesake, it will greatly astonish thou, via Parisian tech house imprint Circus Company. Things get off to a good start on first track "Frozen Beans", a rolling, slinky, minimal house affair with a beautiful bell melody and some weird samples that would mix well with the current state of reductionist house. "Gros Sabots" is a curious one that features furious rock style drumming beneath some entrancing Rhodes keys. But it returns to pure form on the mini-funk grooves of "Wash Karma" (which features Coutu Dumont's signature Latin percussion style throughout) and "Lunatic Lines" which gets a bit deeper and darker for those afterhours moments.

Review: In most instances, so-called modern deep house merely pays lip service to the sounds and techniques of the past. In Poliakov's case however, it is clear that he is one of the few contemporary producers with an intuitive feel for house music. "Superservant" is a building chord-driven deep techno groove, its hissing hats and heavy drums underpinning Poliakov's musical approach. The title track is more laid back tempo-wise, but the same heavy claps and swirling melodies prevail. However, it's "Leaving That Place" which really impresses - with its swinging drums and eerie, dreamy melody hook, it's reminiscent of vintage Two Lone Swordsmen house material, which is as high a compliment as possible.

Review: Having bounced around various European house and techno labels, Paris-based producer Seuil now finds himself nestling in the snug bosom of Circus Company, an imprint famed for its leftfield approach to house and techno. Given his development in recent years, it seems a fitting home. "Don't Trust", featuring the weary, melancholic vocals of Dop, is deep house with a bitter, almost fragile, aftertaste - superb, but not your average floorfiller. Elsewhere, there are more obviously club-friendly sounds, with the jazz drums, moody chords and heady builds of "1999" proving thrillingly irresistible. The bumpin', stripped-back "Jomone" is equally impressive.

Review: Due to the hype driven nature of contemporary electronic music, it's possible you might have already forgotten how the debut Nicolas Jaar album sounds, so kudos to Circus Company for dropping the first of what should be an intriguing series of remix EPs. The words Pepe, Bradock and remix are likely to elicit shrieks of excitement amongst the more considered house heads and the Gallic deity serves up two versions of "Too Many Kids Finding Rain In The Dust"! The opening Blind Pig version is a heady brew of psychedelic sonic twirls and twisted orchestral flourishes over a bumping mid tempo cosmiche groove, whilst the Train Fantome Poke is a more intense, uptempo reinterpretation. Check the flip for Dave Aju's tinny but eminently mixable take on "Space Is Only Noise".

Review: The New York-based Chilean Nicolas Jaar releases his first EP for Circus Company after a string of releases on Brooklyn label Wolf + Lamb. Of course this is another sombre affair from the young producer but as indicated from the abstract artwork, it's not all as straightforward as that. It seems pointless to attempt to categorise it as any one genre, which is characteristic of Jaar's complete disregard for boundaries combining anything from disjointed electronic sounds to sampling hip-hop beats or French opera. Perhaps less dark than some of his past tracks, the lyrical vocals in "Marks" are a little more upbeat, paired with light pianos and jaunty percussion, whilst "Angles" is focused around layered vocals in subtly melancholic tones, cleverly arranged with plucked strings in minor keys. "Materials" however features inevitably off-kilter pianos and brass, juxtaposed with electronic beeps and percussive claps entering the din. A superb EP.

Review: Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts has constantly challenged people?s perception of dance music throughout a career that has seen him develop one of the most distinctive styles in contemporary house music. His sound has encompassed a deep, powerful and original fusion of afro and Latin percussion, instrumental melodies, soulful vocals, and intricate rhythm programming. His second artist album, which is released into an even more fragmented scene than his first effort, sees the Montreal native moving even further beyond the conventional definitions of house and techno.
Breaking the Fourth Wall meanders effortlessly between deep house, minimal techno and acid jazz. Inspirited less by laptops and drum machines and more by traditional Afro and Latin percussion, the album consists of almost entirely live instrumentation. Aided by a host of players, the album features several collaborations which includes Circus Company chums dOP and Dave Aju, who injects a Chicago feel into the project. Forward progressing percussive cuts such as "Can?t Have Everything" and "Mindtrap" sit alongside Pink Floyd-esque reflective pieces like "Intermède" and "Discothèque" that play out with guitar solos and horns whilst house tracks such as "Walking the Pattern" and slow burning afro-grooves such as "Radio Novela" slot into the album where they please. Their disjointed arrangement makes the tracks much more suited to listening to the album as a whole rather than picking out single tracks, another testament to the musicality held within it.
Striking a perfect accord with the eclecticism of Circus Company, Breaking the Fourth Wall is not only a wholly satisfying experience from start to finish, but will also cement Guillaume & the Coutu Dumonts' place in the worlds of house, jazz, minimal and everything in between.
