Review: Alan Abrahams' latest full-length excursion as Portable, 'Augmented Dreams', is a concept album of sorts, with the Paris-based South African apparently drawing creative inspiration from "the use of everyday technological advancements to achieve what were once only dreams or visions of past generations". Regardless of the inspiration, it's another terrific album from the long-serving artist - a tactile, evocative and atmospheric excursion full to bursting with memorable moments. For proof, check gorgeous opener 'The Pull of Time', which (like much of the album) joins the dots between deep house and the string-laden synth-pop of Kelley Polar, the gently acid-flecked shuffle of 'Parallax', the hazy dancefloor hypnotism of 'Begin Again', the soft-touch soul of 'I Need You' and the leftfield synth-pop bubbliness of 'Augmented Dreams'.

Guiding Me
Guiding Me - (7:04) 122 BPM
Guiding Me (Lawrence remix) - (6:49) 122 BPM Hot
Vigor - (7:00) 126 BPM
Review: Portable first popped up on Circus Company late last year with My Sentient Shadow, a full-length excursion informed by atmospheric elcetronic house and minimalistic club cuts. On this follow-up EP, the London-based South African takes a similar sonic approach. 'Guiding Me' is wonky and off-kilter in the best possible way, with minor key motifs, minimal techno electronics, tipsy chords and a woozy lead vocal riding a great minimal house groove. Lawrence takes the track further into sub-heavy, Berlin-style minimal techno territory on his dubby and spaced-out remix, before Portable rounds things off via bonus cut 'Vigor', a TB-303 sporting, acid-flecked tech-house workout that's as druggy and mind-mangling as they come.

Review: Originally a limited, cassette-only release via fellow Canadian Eddie C's Red Motorbike, the Parisian label Circus Company presents The Mole's latest album for the first time digitally. The River Widens is a collection of 21 works that tick all the boxes, covering a wide range of moods and grooves, many of them quite short in length with the exception of some extended tracks streamlined for the dancefloor. Ones such as the hypnotic beatless disco of "New Family", the late night mood music of "Repepepater" (feat Joli B) in particular gets deep, through to the quirky microgroove of "Ufos Over Egypt" (feat Cristobal) or the breathtaking and glassy-eyed ambient of closer "Being A Total Warm Up" are just some of many choice selections.

One Blue Shoe - (7:53) 122 BPM
Bounce The Blues (dub mix) - (6:09) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Mike Shannon resurrects his John Shananigans alias for the first time since 2009! Returning to Circus Company once more, The Man With One Blue Shoe turns in two fresh numbers and a dub mix for 2021 that channels an explosive tech house sound that took over at the turn of the last decade. With a funky, almost electro swing groove in "Bounce The Blues", "One Blue Shoe" turns in a filtered version of the other with its noise-floor and background sounds stripped away for something techier and slightly more refined. Caught up somewhere between the two is the "Bounce The Blues (dub mix)" - a synthy, fun and tongue in cheek spin through some quality, analogue tech house from back in the day.

Review: Minimal's very own human beatbox returns! Bay Area legend and Circus Company stalwart Dave Aju serves up his new one "Love In Zero Gravity" where he puts down the microphone for once and lets the music speak for itself on this rough and tumble yet charming deep house cut. Similarly "Aubergine Dream" works some minimalist magic that's sure to work a treat at the afterhours with its arcane and hypnotic elements. Finally, the San Francisco veteran gets funky on the deep and sunkissed groove of "Gatadu" where he finally lends his much lauded voice into the mix.

The Mole & Tom Trago - "Down The Hallway" - (5:13) 115 BPM
Review: Canada's Colin De La Plante, otherwise known to us mere mortals as The Mole, has arguably been one of the leaders of the second generation of house and techno producers. More specifically, the artist has been involved in the scene since the very early 00s, and has helped to shape labels such as Kompakt, Philpot and Wagon Repair into the powerhouses that they are currently. What we've always loved about this man's music is the characteristic of rebirth and reinvention that seems to represent all his music; this latest EP for Circus Company, Little Sunshine, sees him flex his artistic wings under yet another blend of sounds and influences. The title tune itself is a largely genre-less dance track that sways gently between house and downtempo, guided by a warm, almost funky bassline; "Discotheque Airplane" shifts gears again, landing somewhere lo-fi, where dusty hip-hop beats meet lonesome sonic landscapes. Another surprise move sees him pair up with the equally talented and legendary Tom Trago in the masterfully dubby and contained deep house gem "Down The Hallway", remixed by Holland's Aardvarck into a more potent blend of tech sounds for the floor. Hot!

Review: American songstress Dani Siciliano is house pioneer Matthew Herbert's longtime collaborator, wife and muse. In 2016, she released her self titled album which was co-produced by Gael Rakotondrabe on French imprint Circus Company. Here come some remixes from the album. David Okumu from Austrian band The Invisible hands in a fine rendition of "Sincerely" that goes minimal-pop by way of electronica, Sturm & Drang give "Gone Are Those Days" a deep and slinky tech house remix and finally the Bay Area prankster Dave Aju gives the track another go: his version going for some some dark minimal house flavour that's well suited to the afterhours.

Review: Hot on the heels of a fine EP for Matthew Herbert's Accidental Jnr imprint, Dave Aju pops up on Circus Company. As usual, the four tracks showcased here are full of imaginative touches and quirky but successful fusions of styles. Opener "Low Dive", for example, sees him lace his fuzzy, soul-flecked vocalizations atop dense, techno-influenced drums and dreamy, stretched-out chords "Always Dive", meanwhile, is a quirky chunk of wonky, bass-heavy broken soul, while "Sides" sees him veer further towards Theo Parrish territory. He successfully dips the tempo on closer "Tell Her Why", serving up a delicious chunk of skewed future soul.

I'm The Question (Ben Vedren acapella remix) - (3:33) 126 BPM
Review: She's back! Matthew Herbert's longtime collaborator, wife and muse, Dani Siciliano, strikes out on her own for the first time in ten years since 2006's "Why Can't I Make You High". On "I'm The Question" she delivers some cute and infectious, pop-inflected experimentalism with her wonderful vocal delivery as always. There is an absolutely killer remix by Concrete Paris resident Ben Vedren; this is the kind of bass driven, stripped back house groove you could imagine rocking a heaving dancefloor at sunrise on the infamous boat party or Panorama Bar alike. No wonder the guy's released on the likes of Minibar and Silver Network. There's an accapella remix by Vedren also but don't be misled: this is actually a remix which fully utilizes the vocals but over a more restrained and reduced groove.

Review: Parisian artist (now based in Berlin) Aquarius Heaven is back with a self-titled EP on his usual stomping ground Circus Company. "Bato Charge" is a serving of epic Afro house with Aquarius' trademark vocal stylings influenced by equal parts reggae, dancehall and hip-hop. "50 Drops" is more straight up deep house that really packs a punch on this Innervisions style epic with some of his deep monologues on life, the universe and everything else. Finally "Marie Galante" is a slow and hazy dub jam for a perfect Sunday open air chill-out stage at Sisyphos.

Review: Flabbergast is a new collaboration between Montreal legends Vincent Lemieux and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts. Just like their namesake, it will greatly astonish thou, via Parisian tech house imprint Circus Company. Things get off to a good start on first track "Frozen Beans", a rolling, slinky, minimal house affair with a beautiful bell melody and some weird samples that would mix well with the current state of reductionist house. "Gros Sabots" is a curious one that features furious rock style drumming beneath some entrancing Rhodes keys. But it returns to pure form on the mini-funk grooves of "Wash Karma" (which features Coutu Dumont's signature Latin percussion style throughout) and "Lunatic Lines" which gets a bit deeper and darker for those afterhours moments.

Review: Given their usually prolific nature, it's something of a surprise to find that this is French trio DOP's first single release for two years. They seem to have mellowed with age, too, as "Close Up" is a breezy, nu-disco influenced chunk of strobelight deep house replete with a high-pitched electrofunk vocal and spine-tingling electronics aplenty. The remix package is predictably meaty, with Catz 'N' Dogz providing a particularly banging, floor-friendly remake - all distorted kicks, redlined cymbals and throbbing analogue bass. Amsterdam's San Proper delivers an extended 10-minute rework that sounds like Chicken Lips and Metro Area making analogue deep house, before Louisahhh closes proceedings with a deep and sensuous remake replete with her own stylish vocals.
