Review: Having recently popped up on Room Service Recordings alongside Big J, Baltimore-raised Taiwanese American Jialing returns to Clasico alongside Bay Area producer FARSIGHT. Jialing's roots in Baltimore club culture come through loud and clear on 'Whistle Tip', a brilliantly bouncy and percussive slab of energy-packed, sweat-soaked peak-time heat smothered in whistle sounds and echo-laden drum edits. FARSIGHT provides his own high-octane 'flip', raising the tempo to 143 BPM while breaking up the beats and adding a frankly filthy, sub-heavy bassline. Elsewhere, 'Twister' joins the dots between B-More Club, bleep and contemporary UK bass, while 'Slam City' is a twitchy slab of cut-up breakbeat hardcore revivalism.
Review: WTCHCRFT is the latest artist to appear on Local Action offshoot Clasico. Sleepless in Brooklyn is inspired by the all-nighters he pulled during the pandemic making music. "Ya Dig" is an infectious, acid-soaked electro roller, while on "Back 2 Frontin", he draws on ghetto tech influences to deliver a stripped back rhythm and call-and-response vocals. "Tissue Paper" sees him go down a clubby route. Pared back to just a few elements, the combination of dense drums and tweaked tones is still potent. On "Wait!" WTCHCRFT ups the tempo, dropping a slamming techno rhythm that is sure to cause maximum impact - and makes those late nights in Brooklyn worthwhile.
