Review: Mexico-based producer Soniccone describes himself as "some kind of boogie maker". That's a rather apt description, going on the evidence of this one-track hit for Coquette Maison, at least. "Supernova Beach" variously chugs and bounces to the sound of sharp, evocative, electrofunk-era vintage synths, adding a few choppy edits, thickset compression, filter tricks and quirky melodies to attract the contemporary crowd. It actually sounds like a cross between original '80s electrofunk (of the "obscure, found in a charity shop 50p box" variety) and the bright-and-breezy synth explorations with which DJ Medhi made his name. It's an attractive proposition, all told. More, please!
Review: Parisian party types Venice Beach are gaining a name for themselves as reliable providers of synth-heavy disco-house. Here, they pop up on Mexican label Coquette Maison with two more tracks of goodtime disco-funk. "Waiting For You" leads the charge, offering a choppy, loopy electrofunk jam that sounds like a looser take on the Tiger & Woods cut-up style. While not as immediate or heavy as T&W, it's still pretty attractive. The riotous "Rad", on the other hand, is a formidably sweaty cut-up of Prince-ish synths, rubbery P-funk groovery and cheeky samples. Underestimate its power at your peril.
Review: This guy is a 17-year old Italian producer who is deeply in love with the luxuriant sound of 1990s 'French touch' productions. This new release features 4 tracks that display a sophist action way beyond his years. Naturally it's heavy on the loops and filtered disco/house samples (he says that 'when you feel the music, the repetitiveness doesn't matter'), highlights of which include the slo-mo orchestration of "Kaer", the slammin' diva house of "Once Again" and the Euro-centric cocktail funk of "Lavoretto (St Tropez)". One to watch!
