Review: Renowned record collector Greg Belson has dug even deeper on this superb follow-up to his essential 2016 gospel disco anthology, "Divine Disco". In truth, very few will recognize any of the included tracks, many of which originally appeared on private-press releases, but that's entirely the point: Belson has chosen to share some of his secret weapons with us and we're delighted. Amongst the many highlights you'll find the sparkling, synth-heavy '80s gospel soul of Calvin B Rhone, the soaring and celebratory brilliance of Harrison Jones & The Voices of Harmony, the low-down gospel disco-funk of the Johnson Family Gospel Singers and the Blaxploitation-era hustle of Paradise's "Keep The Fire". Also impressive is Steve Cobby's wonderfully swinging, floor-friendly tweak of Mr Jesse R McGuire's "Jesus Is On The Mainline".

We Want A Piece Of The Pie (Reprise version) - (4:34) 135 BPM
Review: Due to its largely improvised nature and high quality threshold, Septimus's sole album, "We Want a Piece of the Pie", has long been something of a collector's item, with original vinyl copies changing hands for eye-watering sums online. Happily, Cultures of Soul has licensed it and here presents the first official digital download reissue. Sitting somewhere between the jazz-funk antics of Weather Report, early '80s soul, jazz-rock and high-paced disco funk, each of the eight tracks was recorded live at one of the umpteen gigs the band performed around Boston in the late '70s and early '80s. That straight-to-tape approach not only captures the energy of their live performances, but also the ludicrously high quality of the band's musicianship.

Trying To Hold On
Trying To Hold On (original mix) - (4:19) 103 BPM
Trying To Hold On (version) - (4:18) 103 BPM
Trying To Hold On (Gerd Janson Megamix) - (8:02) 104 BPM Hot
Review: Most are familiar with Junior Byron's brilliant 1983 single "Dance to the Music", but few are well acquainted with the boogie/reggae fusionist's '85 jam "Trying to Hold On". Helpfully, Cultures of Soul has decided to reissue it for the first time, accompanying the original vocal version - a super-sweet, spaced-out synth-boogie workout complete with a thrillingly soulful and sun-kissed reggae vocal from the effervescent Byron - and stripped back "Version" (intergalactic boogie-dub of the highest order) with a fresh rework from Gerd Janson. The Running Back chief does a brilliant job in combining elements of both versions, adding more dub effects and emphasizing Byron's brilliant vocal in all the right places. It's a stunning rework of a little-known classic.

Banko Woman
Banko Woman - (5:48) 134 BPM Hot
Faith, Luck, And Music - (4:12) 122 BPM
Review: Destination '77: Nigerian troupe The Apostles lay down their third album Banko Woman. And, with it, this widescreen vibe excursion that's been a go-to for Afrobeat diggers since it was released on Love Day 40 years ago. "Banko Woman" is a firing, energetic funk jam layered with vibrant levels of instrumentation that gradually strip back at points to let you feel the raw tempo of the groove. "Faith Luck & Music" is at once both more bluesy, thanks to the sliding, melting guitars, and spiritual, thanks to the traditional rhythm and chords.

Review: When music fanatic Deano Sounds found himself coming of age during the 'post record industry era', he decided to go ahead and form a label anyway. That was in 2010 and now seven years later he is still going strong, with an equally strong roster to boot. Following on from Tropical Hustle Disco and Brazilian Boogie comps, we now have something even more special - the return of Nigerian disco-funk band SJOB Movement's 1977 album Friendship Train. Reissued with help from Uchenna Ikonne, the album features six original tracks that fuse Afro-beat with analogue synths. There's also a cool remix of "Love Affair" too!
