Review: Germany's Philly Vanilli has been around since forever, it seems, but to these ears - and they're ears that have reviewed plenty of his previous releases for this very website - this new set of reworks for Deep Disco Edits is the best work he's turned out so far. He's working with some very well-known source tracks here, so there's no point insulting your intelligence by enumerating them: suffice to say that somehow he's managed to tease the funk out of these much-loved classics in a way that, in some cases, even the original artists didn't manage. Ohio Players' 'Love Rollercoaster' was, admittedly, always a personal fave of yours truly but in PV's hands it becomes a truly exceptional 10 minutes of sheer funk joy, while his reworkings of Marvin, Kool & The Gang and The Temptations are equally impressive. Essential!

Review: Lipps Inc's 'Funky Town' is undeniably a classic - hell, it's even mentioned in 'The Simpsons' as one of Homer's favourite songs - and Philly Vanilli have made a pretty decent fist of reworking it here, looping up various sections, letting those strident strings shine through in all their otherworldly glory and, perhaps most importantly, resisting the tempation to go overboard with the percussion FX, an error they've been guilty of in the past. Whether any dancefloor that'll accept this but not the original - which is surely the point of re-edits - actually exists is debatable, but in terms of simply refreshing a well-known standard, yes, nice job!

Review: A split release here from Uruguay's Deep Disco Edits, featuring three tracks remade in a total of four mixes by a couple of label regulars, KidParis and Philly Vanilli. KidParis is first up with two takes (though it has to be said there's not really a lot of difference between them) on 'Ganz Wien', the 1981 debut single from Austrian artist/producer Falco, best known internationally for 1985's 'Rock Me Amadeus'. Continuing the theme is the Disco Bongo Rework of 'Vienna Calling', another Falco opus that featured on the same album as 'Rock Me Amadeus', before Philly Vanilli give us a wonked-out rework of Garnier classic 'The Man With The Red Face'.

Review: It's not entirely clear who Henry Street is/are or what, if any, is his/her/their connection to the legendary NYC house label of the same name, but there they come with a three-tracker that can be filed under 'disco-house' or just 'disco' as you see fit. The EP opens with mid-paced groover 'Ware House' with its dreamy, chorused female vocal and nagging guitar hook, before things take a sweatier, funkier turn on 'The Plan' with its hip-house vocal, jaunty Rhodes and parping brass. The standout for yours truly though is 'To Bad', with its slightly chimpmunk'd, Jacksons-esque vocal.

Review: The somewhat mysterious Mister Larry - an artist/producer with half a dozen deep house releases to his name but seemingly no online/social media presence whatsoever - comes to Austria's Deep Disco Edits (part of Philly Vanillli's WE MEAN DISCO!!! stable) with 10 disco and funk re-edits. Whoever Mister Larry may be, he's dug pretty deep - Brass Construction's 'Now Is Tomorrow' becomes 'Brass', Donna Summer's 'Bad Girls' becomes 'Girls', but that's about it for well-known favourites - making this collection well worth checking if you're in need of fresh material for your disco sets, even if must-have standouts are in short supply.

Review: The mysterious Deep Disco Edits, who've released several re-edit EPs on We Mean Disco, drop a second set on their own self-titled label. Instrumental opener 'Disco' is the standout to these ears: the original source has us beat but its multiple layers of keening, fluttering guitars, underpinned by a walking bassline and augmented with string sweeps, should keep disco floors grooving along nicely. 'Lewis' makes a decent fist of giving 'I Want A New Drug' by Huey Lewis & The News a dancefloor makeover - whether the track actually warranted one is debatable but this new rub may appeal to those with an 80s fetish!
