Dank 'N' Dirty is a US/UK-based label that was formed in 2010 by DJ Sashwat, which is now also co-run by early-era dubstep producer/DJ Legend4ry.
The label focuses on thought-provoking bass heavy music that generally bounces around the dubstep realm of sounds. Dank 'N' Dirty has a long-standing reputation of focusing on quality over quantity. Value is placed on originality, complexity, and musicality.
Review: There is no escaping the majesty of the Dank N Dirty Dubz team in 2023 it would seem, as they continue their rampage in fantastic fashion, delivering a mind-melting compilation drop in celebration of 4/20. Nothing but the most bulbous dubstep heat is included, with the likes of heavyweights such as L-Wiz, Khromi, Nightmare & Oni, SubtleMind and more all delivering face-melting originals. As always, we get to enjoy a wide range of original steppers' heat, from Legend4ry's percussive-driven roller in 'Closer', to the system-smashing subs and dubwise marches of 'Connected Through The Sound' from CONTRA'. Our highlight however, would of course be the marvellous return of The Widdler, who delivers a sublime sweep through swampy sweetness in 'Dem Boy'.
Review: Once again, we see the Dank N Dirty Dubz crew land with a palpable sense of majesty as Legend4ry arrives on a smokey flex, delivering four sizzling originals that are sure to leave the rave absolute sweltering in their wake. First up, the glistening percussive taps and vibrant soundscaping of 'Beep' takes us back to the days of Silkie & Quest with some marbled melodic textures, followed by the more siren-like lead synthesiser slams of 'Swingin'', which gives us a more emotive idea. Next, 'Delicious' delivers what it says on the tin as tasty, purple-inspired synth lines and sharpened drum sounds give us a system-ready heater, before The Widdler arrives in typically explosive style, providing more stunning work on the beautiful, guitar-led sweeps of 'Rain', giving the EP a fiery finale.
Review: It's always exciting to see the Dank 'n' Dirty Dubz team arrive with a high energy compilation, with this years '4/20' collection supplying a top quality collection of original dubstep heat. Featuring a pretty exceptional tracklisting, we see the likes of Oakin, Khromi, Jafu, Requake, Mambele, L-Wiz, Pushloop and many more established faces land with a dizzying set of dubwise designs, perfect for both the late night ravers and the day-time skankers. Our two highlights would have to include the skippy chord jitters and booming subs of Nightmare & Oni's 'Soldier Stance', followed by the breaks infused percussive drifts of 'Champagne' from The Widdler, giving us a serious sack of sizzlers to enjoy!
Review: Another month means another scorching drop from the Dank N Dirty Dubz team, welcoming the intense production feelers of Morning High. As a whole, this EP is one you need to hear on a system to truly appreciate, as the dubwise drumlines and intense LFO jitters of the title track 'Systems' unleashes a potent display of sub-pressure below some tidy percussive processing. From here, DJ Variant gets involved for the evocative sonic landscapes and emotional vocal displays of 'Melfina', sending us to an entirely different dimension all together. Finally, the tripletted bass twitches and intense rhythmic alternations of 'Chakka' giving us a final dash of differentiation for round off in style.
Review: As always with the Dank N Dirty Dubz team, we are absolutely thrilled to see them unveiling new music, with this collection from Soul Bass Project ticking all the boxes for dubstep fans worldwide. We begin our journey through this one with a look at 'Crimson', an industrious system buster, jam-packed with sub-heavy goodness and potent percussive displays, with the swirling melodic jives and chord arpeggio combinations of 'Beach Trip' following closely behind. From here, the melodies and rhythms become ever more impactful as 'Viva Cuba' with combined groovy piano lines, enthralling guitar plucks with lively drum displays for a groovy shakedown, making way for a wicked finale. As far as originals go, the choppy drum punches and powerful sub textures of 'Che' work perfectly as a closer, with the uplifting melodic direction putting the cherry on the cake.
Review: As per usual, this brand new selection from the Dank N Dirty Dubz crew holds a bag of goodies for us to enjoy, with MediCated getting the work in exploring the most explosive areas of the ever-expanding dubstep sound. As far as dubstep albums go, the best ones attempt to keep the tracklisting as varied as possible, a theme that MediCated runs with, from the super sidechained melodies of 'E.a.r.t.h' and eastern inspired string work of 'Tigris', to more dubwise delights of 'Cut Ya Finga Riddim' and 'Sawtooth Dub'. It's a fabulous selection indeed, with the likes of Gdash, Wasteman and Busted Fingaz providing us with some additional collaborative energy, alongside some exclusive remixes as MediCated gets to work on two heaters from Deadblind.
Review: As always with Dank N Dirty Dubz, they have done the business and supplies us with an exceptional selection of dubstep heat from Depth. We kick off with 'Unloved', a very smartly arranged exploration into eastern vocals and moogy pulses, before 'Clean Dem', provides us with a sub-heavy haunted thrill ride, topped off by Jafu's energetic 2-step style rethink. From here we then dive into 'Mist', a warbling drift through minimal drum work and powerful bass notation, coupled with Demure's recreation, exploding with percussive energy from start to finish.
Review: The Dank N Dirty Dubz team have become synonymous with top quality releases over the past few years and this latest selection is a continuation of that theme as they welcome ten of the best inside for a fantastic 4/20 compilation. The roster is incredible, with heavyweight names including Roommate, Pushloop, Roklem, Enigma Dubz and more. There are some incredible tunes throughout, with our favourites including The Widdler's phenomenal dubwise creation in 'Toker, the purple synthesizer slams of 'Cider from Bisweed and of course the breaksy brilliance of Jafu's 'Nuken'.
Review: For the most recent edition of the Dank N Dirty Dubz catalogue, we welcome the sounds of Demure, a Zimbabwaen dubstep mastermind who's uniquely melodic approach to the deeper side of dubstep is a real breath of fresh air. The title track 'Velezansi' gives us a real taste of this as we are greeted by breathy pad textures and pulsating drum layers, over warbling LFOs far beneath. Next, 'Umoya' deploys subtle sub textures and cute drum processing before we hear the unpredictable rhythmic manoeuvres of 'Thin Line' and shimmering synthesizer saxophone combinations of 'Starlight'. The project then signs out on 'Power Shift', a haunted, OST-like design, driven by spacious synthesizer pulls and apocalyptic guitar plucks. Stunning work.
Review: Now as far as compilations go, this without a doubt has to be one of our favourite dubstep selections of the year so far as Dank n Dirty unveil seventeen original creations, featuring high profile appearances from the likes of Aztek, Arta, Liquid Memoirs, Enigma Dubz and more. For us, this compilation showcases so much, from the emotional tones of 'Shaking & Withdrawn' from Legend4ry and the dubwise inspired arrangements of Otz's 'Moody Dub', to the super shuffling rhythms of 'Kashmir' from Khromi. For us, there are some real standouts to this one, the first of which comes from living dubstep legend: The Widdler, with his spacey, dub-infused original entitled 'THC'. As well as this, the potent collaboration between Roomate and Dokter named 'Overstanding' packs a serious punch.
Review: Dubstep albums, when done correctly, can be a real thing of infinite beauty, traversing a range of influences and styles to bring life to some truly beautiful ideals. We feel that is exactly what Khromi has done here as the 'Traveller In A Strange World' EP is released, courtesy of Dank N Dirty Dubz. From the airy scattered tones of 'Floating' and 'Mango Juice' to the skippy drum work and wild synthesizers of 'Last Q', this one is all about its variability, taking the form of a living, breathing being. The stunning brass reverberations of 'Circula' and crunchy drum work of 'Hemp' also plays into this, with some stunning remix work being provided by Liquid Memoirs and Demure later down the line.
Review: Dank N Dirty make a wicked return to the fray here as they bring together the services of BNML and Volume A for a scorching two track creation, one we couldn't wait to get stuck into. We begin with the dubwise textures of 'Electric 88' which takes moogy bass tones and layers them amongst ominous horn structures and airy chord progressions, creating a real sense of dread. On the flip we are given 'Into Reality', a real trip into the dungeon as course layers on growling reese bass textures lead the way alongside mellow sub movements and dubbed out background percussion. Overall, an awesome combination of futuristic dubstep stylings and a classic dubwise use of space.
Review: We have a winner... Frequency Dreams entered Dank N Dirty Dubz' Pushloop remix competition last year and this epic three tracker is the result. Building on his Version Collective and Dub Sector releases, Frequency Dreams hits home with a trio of tightly coiled vibes; "Axis" is a well oiled machine humming with pneumatic funk, "Radiate" is a little more introspective with its heavy atmospheres and gutter scuffing bass while his remix of Pushloop's "Secret Society" provides the grand finale where a whole new quirky staccato riff ups the energy while paying full respect.
Review: Time for a latter platter; Utah abyss explorers Durandal and Funkmod make their debut on the mighty DND with five stinking bass creepers. Vibes range from soaking wet frog bass and alien weirdness on "Choomah Dub" to pressure cooked bounce dynamics and shimmering skanks on "Wise Up". Need more you greedy animal? Jump on their remix of Pushloop. Pure filth.
Secret Society (Morning High remix) - (4:34) 140 BPM
Secret Society (Coltcuts remix) - (4:13) 140 BPM
Review: Weirdo handshake fingers in the air! Pushloop returns with another invitation to his mysterious gang. Last spotted on DNDD in February 2017, "Secret Society" is now packing remix heat. SBK invites us with a little bass fluctuation, Morning High invites via a stopover in Istanbul thanks to its breath-taking prayer calls, Meinu doesn't so much as invite us but pushes us in to the deep end with no safety devices and Coltcuts takes us along the distorted scenic route. Finally Sudo brings us into the fold on the 176 express. One way trippers only.
Review: There is a real feeling of quality around the dubstep resurgence at the moment, and a big part of that is due to labels like Dank N Dirty Dubz who are making sure standards are being maintained. This gracious dubwise two tracker from Drew's Theory oozes class, as the reggae inspired instrumentation of 'Absolute' swim away on top of cavern of sunny tones. On the flip 'Shoreline, Hallandale' works with more sensual melodies, incorporating spacey synths and even an unexpected twist on a classic break sample for good measure.
Review: Ternion Sound make an impactful return on the Dank N Dirty Dubz imprint with this industrious arrangement entitled 'Mataafa'. From a production perspective it's a masterpiece, harnessing metallic distortion with powerful precision. The lead synths take the roll of sirens, wailing above a bed crunchy bass synthesisers and intricately reverberated percussive lines. Very tasty!
Review: Ride 'em cowboy... Otz and The Widdler saddle up on Dank N Dirty Dubz with four refreshingly loose and organic pieces of bluesy sublow soul. "Outlaws" and "Once Upon A Time" set the scene with glisteningly crisp guitar work and breeze harmonic vapour trails. Deeper into the wild west caper "New Frontiers" fuses UKG-style steppery with a little jazz spirit and slide guitar magic while "Before Dark" closes on a swooning emotional halftime vibe with full emphasis on space and soul. One of Dank N Dirty's deepest releases to date; this is sublime.
Review: Following a crucial tear-up on Hatched earlier this year, Abstrakt Sonance makes his Dank N Dirty debut with one of the most impressive and far-reaching EPs of his life (no pun) We ignite with "Life", a sweaty, stripped-back rolling slice of tribalism before diving deep into a glistening sea of chimes on the wonderful "Sculpture". Deeper into the EP we find "Metal Energy", a track bouncing with a soulful bruk feel while "Love Is Strong" taps deep into the roots with glistening guitars and powerful dulcets from Ghette and we close with the overwhelming warbled bass tones of his Enigma Dubz remix. Ah life!
Review: Dubstep marathon men Requake return to their familiar haunt Dank N Dirty Dubz with another superb exercise in deep rolling bass grooves. Each cut running and splashing with some crisp organic feeling drum work, "Endurance" plays with the halfstep arrangement with a perkiness in the hi-hats and dubby synth flutters, "Groundless" takes more of a UKG approach with its momentum gathering kicks while the bass groans are pure gutter. Finally "Jardin Bruxel" bids us adieu with a light housey groove that swings with the soul of a Submotion Orchestra join... Until some subtle snarling basses enter at the final approach. Beautiful.
Review: Californian bass crusader makes himself known on DNDD with four heavyweight cuts. "Midnight Wax" soundtracks a paranoid graveyard prowl, all shadows and owl hoots. "Secret Society" is a harmonically fine-tuned stepper that's tailored for the biggest of rigs while "White Magic" blows cosmic pipe wind into our third eyes with total dubspace satisfaction and "Kula Kula" takes us deep into the north African deserts with immense and foreboding results. Remix-wise Caidance adds layers of hazy mystical atmospheres while The Widdler fazes out the vocal and remoulds our attention to the drums. Debuts don't come much stronger than this.
Review: US dubstep lifer The Widdler backs up 2013's star-bathing deep roller "Lost In Space Part 2" with two additional slices of fresh grit. "Acheri" is a gritty halftime cut spiked with a cocktail of twisted, trippy sounds and processes while "Harrington" travels the saw-toothed path with an ever-mutating paranoid bassline that grizzles like a teething lion cub... And bites twice as hard.
