Deep Dark & Dangerous

Despite having its roots firmly planted in Croydon, England, dubstep is now a global movement, with Deep, Dark & Dangerous being one of the leading global imprints representing the sound. Headed up by dubstep heavyweights and internationally acclaimed production trio: Truth, DD&D has rapidly risen to the top of the steppers tree, providing the scene with a near un-matched stream of original releases and live events. Truth’s sound represents the darker side of the dubstep spectrum, which is mirrored within the label’s now extensive catalogue, which constantly shifts between hard hitting solo EPs and groundbreaking compilation drops. The roster is always expanding, previously welcoming heavyweights such as Biome, Pushloop, Sepia, Taiko, Dalek One, Youngsta, The Widdler and many many more. They represent such a consistently top quality approach to releasing 140 music with their bespoke artwork designs also adding to the label’s majesty. With dubstep back on the up, it’s very exciting looking into the future of the Deep, Dark & Dangerous sound.

Flying Saucer - (4:08) 142 BPM
Review: If there's one thing we can always look forward to, it's Deep Dark & Dangerous coming up with yet another dubstep belter, which they have done time and time again over the last two years. Here we see them make a high profile return as they unveil this absolute corker from 'Shlump', who let's loose all the cannons on 'Flying Saucer'. Through a combination of weird and wonderful bass warblings and dubwise drum expanses, this one hits home heavily and packs a major punch.

Review: It's been a very exciting few months of releases for the Mancunian dubstep veteran, as we see Biome land yet another kill drop, this time courtesy of Truth's Deep Dark & Dangerous imprint. We begin our journey into this one with a dip into the lethal reese design and earth-shattering drum slaps of 'The Joker', followed by 'Boxed', a sublow creeper, jam-packed with eerie atmospheric pressure and powerful bass energy. Next, we are greeted by colourful percussive plucks and raucous substructures in 'Monster' before 'Never Listen' strips the whole party back for a crunchy finale, capping off yet another well thought out drop from the DD&D team.

Review: To start the year off with a bang the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew have pulled out all the stops with this latest drop, welcoming the enigmatic production mastery of Hypho inside for a sizzling six track showdown. The Manchester veteran firstly launches 'Access Denied', a crunchy steppers delight, unleashing tidy drum processing and hard hitting bass action, before Rakjay arrives with a typically tidy vocal addition of 'That Vibration', a swampy slap that will turn any dance to a ruckus. Next, Donnie Danko jumps aboard for the haunted backdrops and lethal low-ends of 'Voodoo Ish', with the bubbling melodic jolts and subtle subby warbles of 'Dingle Bat' following in close pursuit. To round off, two more heavyweight hitters, with the wonky marches and dubby delays of 'Wrong Turn' leading the way before Megumi arrives on 'The End' for a sumptuous soundscape display, giving us a look into Hypho's more emotional side for a signature send off.

Review: It's been a brief minute since we last took in a brand new release from the legendary Truth trio, who we are pleased to see returning to their home imprint of Deep Dark & Dangerous for a lively five track expanse. We begin with the title track 'Neptune', a jittering collection of delicate synths and punchy kick patterns, glued together with an array of glittering reese tones. Next, 'Psychological' sees Lelijveld get involved with some stunning vocal additions, giving us some incredible soundscaping mastery before the grizzly atmospherics and glitchy manoeuvres of 'Lost' take us somewhere completely different. From here, 'Shrouds' supplies us with a much more aquatic sounding creation, linking crunchy percussion with volatile bass tones, before we round off with 'Earthlings', a big synth system-buster, stuffed with hypnotic energy and terrifying horn stabs to see us out in style!

Review: It's always an exciting thing to see a new Deep Dark & Dangerous project hit our shelves, especially when they are headed up by ENiGMA Dubz, one of the UK's most consistent sonic masterminds, especially within the field of 140. This project kicks off with the incredibly swampy synth textures and crunchy drum crashes of 'Belphegor', a real monster of a riddim to kick off proceedings. From here, 'Severed' then rears its subby head, doused in gnarly LFO splutters and sharp snare slaps, with 'Pressuring' then delivering a system-ready punch of low ended lava alongside NotL?, upping the energy levels significantly. Finally, the creeping melodies and subtle synthy pads of 'Surfacing' close out this project, which is sure to cause a ruckus or three when it lands in a dancefloor setting!

Review: As soon as we saw that Enigma Dubz had again teamed up with the Deep Dark & Dangerous family, we knew we were in for a treat. This tidy new five track display sees the veteran producer perform at his dubstep optimum, kicking off with the gnarly synth growls and haunted percussive delays of 'Area 51'. Next, the vibrant soundscaping, stunning vocal chops and sweeping synthetic flavours of 'Into The Ground' give us something a lot more emotive before 'The Cosmos' gifts us glittering pads and power sub-pulses below. Finally we finish up with two more heaters, with 'No Sleep' giving us a trippy dive into the edge of a more wave-influenced sound, before the crunchy percussion and heavily syncopated synth melodies of 'Tunnel Vision' put the cherry on the cake.

Review: Following on from last week's release of 'Deep', the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew continue their 'Trilogy' series with the second edition: 'Dark'. They have again assembled one heck of a line up for this one, welcoming in the sounds of Enigma Dubz, Leon Switch, Khiva and Pushloop just for starters. The project is a perfect encapsulation of the darker side of the DD&D discography, with a couple of immediate standouts being 'The Devil In Disguise', which sees JLEON and Outsider link up for an incredibly spooky harmonic thrill ride, alongside Brassic's 'Footsoldier', which deploys a regiment of lethal horn stabs to turn any rave into a ruckus!

Review: We are always excited to see a new release from the Deep Dark & Dangerous camp hit the shelves, and their latest offering most certainly doesn't let us down as we embrace the forward thinking sounds of Distinct Motive. This is definitely a unique selection, with the wonky, super syncopated swings of 'Loose Pimp' leading the way before we jump into the dubwise Asian fusions of 'Crazy'. Next up, we take a look into 'Itchy Fingers', which again uses a super unique lead synthesizer sound to provide the early energy, before descending into glitchy, gritty madness later on. Finally, we look at the title track 'Radar' and most certainly not disappointed as it's hypnotic, swampy lead bass loops and bleeping atmospherics put the finishing touches on the whole project nicely.

Review: What an incredible project we have here, as Samba makes a champion return alongside the vastly respected Deep Dark & Dangerous imprint across four more absolute heaters under the EP title 'Kings'. We begin with a look at the charming 8bit flutters and softened harmonies of the title track 'Kings' before taking a dive into the deeper and darker with urgent scattered woodwind melodies and breathy chorus lines of 'Paleluv'. The following track we examine is entitled 'Explain' and barges its way into the centre of the project with rawcus lead synths, slicing through all in their path, before we round up this impressive body of work with the eastern inspired melodic lines and hard hitting bass instrumentation of 'Haru'.

Review: There's no denying that Leo Cap has been on an absolute tear over the course of the last two years, with this, his brand new album on Deep Dark & Dangerous, being a perfect showcase of how far his sound has come. Leaping left, right and centre across the full spectrum of dubstep ideals, Leo has cultivated a truly magnificent collection, from the aquatic sub work of 'Don't Move' and mind-bending sub sweeps of 'Underground Business', to the sub-busting bass marches of 'Step Off' and more rhythm-inspired percussion of 'Music That You Like'. It's a truly top quality collection, with our individual highlights including the super-abstract bass designs and vocal sampling of 'No Matter How Far', next to the pulsating bass warbles of 'Same Different' and raucous LFO designs of Manchesta Dem Boy'. What a collection!

Review: Following on from a fabulous year of releases, Deep Dark & Dangerous are back at it again, this time unveiling Oxossi's brand new drop, featuring five sumptuous sizzlers. We begin with the shimmering rhythms and bulgining bass pulses of 'Sweat' which injects the project with energy right from the off, before the organic percussive sampling and sweeping, detuned horn-lines of 'Magdelena' give us something very different indeed. Next 'Morbid Impulses' delivers a combination of smashing drum slaps and eastern melody, before the more mellow composition and shaker-lead rhythms of 'Sosa' again steer the EP in a completely different direction. We then finish up with the Lo-fi drum processing and spooky melodic synthesis of 'Dead Thorns' which puts one final twist in the tale of this fabulous selection.

Review: The Deep Dark & Dangerous team have a real ear for explosive 140 creations, with this latest drop being the most recent in a long line of destructive collections. They welcome Roadsbeef inside to explore six system-ready sub-busters, with 'Say My Name' alongside MC Jumanji being a potent introduction indeed, doused in intense lyricism and some seriously grizzly LFO action. Next, 'Pippi In Dubland' sees us explore a much more dubwise design, focussing on minimal subs and sweeping synths, before 'Wangster' unleashes a robotic sounding dinner party of crunchy synthetic shapes. Next up, the easily recognizable vocals of Vandull are let loose for a blistering display of rave-ready bars on 'Sick & Ill', followed by another return to the minimal on 'Ryu In The Dark', giving us a sub-busting showdown on original dubstep flavour. Finally, the jittering bass glitches and spacey arrangements of 'Monstar' give us a cool outro track, rounding off another top notch collection from the DD&D team.

Humid skanks, heavy pressure and sludgy bass distortion pave the way on "Looming Shadow" while "Matador" winds up the bull in you with hard throttle 23rd century metallic funk and "Space Cartoon" takes us on an animated one-way trip on the saw tooth express. Need more wetness? Jump on the 2008 wobble homage "Magical Lamp" and give it a good old rub before "Puppet On The Stage" sends us all home packing via the sea of Arabia on a job lot of peyote. Everything then intensifies as the fuzzy 808 subs of 'Pot Cookies' roll into play, before the super punchy snare slaps and booming bass synthesizers of 'Old's Cool' round off another top notch selection from the Deep Dark & Dangerous team.

They here invite Coltcuts inside to deliver two tracks of pure fire, kicking off with the warbling electronic bass drives of 'Thank The Lord', which possesses a pretty damned demonic feeling throughout. Review: After a trio of militant EPs for the Multi Music association, it is time for Onhell to deliver some of his swampy dubstep vibes through the ever-impressive Deep Dark & Dangerous cartel. "Bad Faith" is the only tune on here but, then again, quality tunes don't require a back-up track to prosper; this one's particularly devious thanks to a lingering melody that circles above sparse and aqueous drums, along with minimalistic vocal samples that push the tune way out onto more seductive planes. Review: The Deep Dark and Dangerous imprint has been one of the most notable movements within deep dubstep's recent resurgence, having consistently supplied the underground scene with original ideas and themes. With the LA based label's latest project we see them team up with dubstep heavyweights Truth & DJ Youngsta for the debut 'Shadow People' album. Being over three years in the making, it is, as expected, brilliant. Our stand out picks would have to be the eerie yet satisfying soundscaping of 'Deeper' featuring Spikey Tee, the absolutely chilling sub bass pressure of 'Awake Before You' and of course the eastern inspired embarkation of 'Eyes On Me' featuring stunning vocal additions from Rosa. This one is a serious must have for any dubstep fanatic.

Review: As ever, the Deep Dark & Dangerous movement continuous to raise the bar as they return alongside Shlump for a breathtaking piece of old school dubstep creation. As a composition 'Alien Technology' is reminiscent of early Cluekid, with shimmering bass tones gliding up and down LFO's alongside expertly crafted percussive chimes and crisp snare placement. Excellent work!

Review: Within the dubstep community, the one thing that is universally celebrated is creativity and there are few with more of that at their disposal than Oxossi. For this project he teams up with the now infamous Deep Dark & Dangerous team, and what a project it is! The title track "Dark Passenger" is reminiscent of early DMZ, with grinding bass LFO's duetting with haunting atmospherics and dubbed out drum work. Next up we have the phenomenal arrangement of 'Tippy Toeing' which is a goody bag of unpredictable rhythmics and crunchy synthesis. Following this we dive into the intense soundscaping of "Tokoloshe" finishing up with the heavy syncopation of "Ride It". This is a great piece of work for all involved!

Review: The Deep Dark & Dangerous movement is starting to become a frightening prospect, as they put together yet another storming release, this time alongside St Louis native: Rez. From start to finish the EP is a dubsteppers delight, as we tuck into the delicious designs of the title track 'The Valley', followed by the minimized growls of 'Item 9' and incredibly punchy drum/ reese combos of 'One By One'. From here we step into the evil atmosphere and metallic bass maneuvers of 'Borders & Boundaries' before finishing up with the matured percussive rolls and spacious drum work of 'Diagon Alley'. This is a great overall project and yet another instant classic from the DD&D team!

Review: An all-star lineup is an understatement here as some of the best in dubstep team up on Deep Dark & Dangerous for an absolute corker entitled 'Freak Show'. Long term genre favourite: Youngsta pulls together with the ever-creative sounds of Truth and a breath of fresh air from Stylust, resulting in a whirlwind of demonic melodies, colossal drum designs and writhing bass patterns, making this a real monster you can expect to hear at festivals and in clubs all around the country.

Review: It appears, to nobody's surprise, that Ternion Sound have gone and done it again, landing on the dubstep behemoth: Deep Dark & Dangerous for a scrumptious four track offering. We begin with a dive into the incredibly punchy drum work and eerie melodic twists of the title track 'Know Thyself', followed my the more harmonic journey of 'Hallowed'. The drum design throughout this EP is pretty flawless, with the scattered marching rhythms of 'Ah Fer Fuck' giving us a real injection of energy before 'They're Coming' deploys a monstrously mighty set of bass tones and percussive manoeuvres to round things off nicely.

Review: Over the years we have seen the vocal mastery of Strategy rise right to the top around the deeper side of electronic dance music. Therefore, when you pair him with producers with as much firepower as Regents & Cartridge, you know you are in for a treat. We begin with 'Shegry', a ferocious fusion of subtle reesey bass textures and scattered percussive rhythms, followed by the intense drum rolls of 'Greengate Adhesive', within which we hear the very best of Strategy's more classic-sounding verse structuring. Next, another roller with 'Nuff Noise', which unleashes more of those outlandish bass designs, morphing into an electronic pulser, before the super catchy melodic jitters of 'Heritage' round off a fantastic EP with a touch of new school finesse.

Review: As always with the Deep Dark & Dangerous faithful, we are in for a treat as Leo Cap unveils a spicy five track display of original dubstep delight. First up, 'Lemon & Cognac' unleashes a grizzly combination of gnarly synth swipes and eerie vocal samples to kick us off in style, before 'Los Angeles' takes the sound back to the essence with a jumpy, percussive-lead roller, packed with tasty distortion and shimmering shakers. Next, the wicked vocal lines of Julia Marks join the party for a hypnotic dive into sweeping synthesizer textures on 'Our Best Trip', followed by a lo-fi coated cave dweller in 'Flavour', a serious title track. Finally 'Stick Inside' allows the weirdness to run wild, giving us a gut-busting finale that we can really enjoy. Excellent work!

Review: Following on from an incredibly successful 2021, the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew have started this year with a real no holds barred attitude, unleashing firstly this monstrous display of dubstep power from Mesck. We begin with 'Terror Management', a swampy tredge through gnarly reese textures and haunting bell-driven melodies, exactly what the doctor ordered. From here, we find ourselves face to face with a swarm of sizzling bass pulses, set to knock any block off on 'Lithium Vision', before delivers a slightly more tame display of organic drum impacts and distorted reesey sweeps, again topped with eerie, dissonant harmonics for an extra wow factor. Finally, 'Canto IX' arrives for a final gutpunch, driving forward with one of the gnarliest lead basslines we have heard in a hot minute, rounding off this EP with a serious dash of flare.

Review: As the year draws towards a swift finale, the Deep Dark & Dangerous crew have one more final bag of dubstep dynamite to bless us all with before we finish up. This project is a collection of official remixes, featuring the likes of dubstep heavyweights such as Truth, Kloudmen, ColtCuts, Dark Harmonics and many more. Overall as a project, it surfs across the entire spectrum really well, leaving no corner of the ever expanding genre unexplored. Highlights for us are without a doubt the haunted atmospheric vocals and syncopated keys that come with the two Sepia remixes of 'Regret' and 'Smoke', along with Leon Switch's ultra-metallic rework of Enochi's 'Nefarious'.

Review: For us, there are few North American producers who have had as much of a positive influence on the traditional dubstep sound as The Widdler, who has been at the forefront of swampy sound design for a long time. Here we see him team up with the precise production prowess of Pushloop for 5 tracks of pure danger. To start 'Abydos' takes us down a satanic sidestreet of growling subs and asian melodies, with 'Houdini' providing some more riddim inspired bass drivers and 'Wiccan Witches' causing an absolute ruckus. Both producers have also included solo creations, with Pushloop's being a super swingy percussive ride in 'Broken Murals'. The Widdler then strikes with 'Calamity', a masterpiece in eastern dubstep fusion. Incredible stuff.
