Review: Deep Down Slam's first 2014 release is a collaboration between London based producer Mikki Funk who already made a name to himself releasing on labels like Say Ahh & Music Is Love and should be already known to many of you and Berlin based producer Peer Du who makes his debut. Peer Du's Original mix of "So Close" featuring vocalist Marty Altmann is a deep warm vocalhouse number good for sunny days to come. Mikki Funk's remix of "So Close" comes more shuffled and has a great vibe with the uplifting drums and wicked bassline giving it the special uk garage house touch. Mikki Funk's "Take You There" is a beautiful downtempo number reminiscent of early house grooves. And finally "Master Groove" from Mikki Funk goes back in time and shows us his skills on the machines. Proper deep house vibes for da heads!
Review: Groove Committee's "I Want To Know", produced by Victor Simonelli and a huge club anthem on its initial release on Nu Groove back in 1991, is something of a timeless US house classic. It's nice to see, then, that these new remixes are suitably reverential to Simonelli's original. Revivalist house specialist Nicholas (no stranger to reworking old Nu Groove classics) joins forces with fellow Italian Marcoradi to deliver a brilliantly breezy, piano-heavy take that perfectly captures the spirit of the original. DJ Steaw thickens the beats and adds a little acid spice on his similarly piano-centric rework, while Demetrio Giannice opts for a vintage Italian deep house vibe on his pleasingly tactile take.
Review: New York's Edgar M comes through correct with his debut EP for Deep Down Slam, and it's pure NY jack to the max, bringing together elements of King Street and Strictly Rhythm but rewired and updated for modern ears. "Off" and "Oscillate" are both punchy house rippers with funky grooves and a rich, analogue sound. The Donato Capozzi dub of "That Strut" is another tight house workout which reminds us of something off Versatile. All in all, an absolute smacker of an EP.
Review: Victor Simonelli's Groove Committee alias inspired much of the upbeat vocal house we hear today thanks to seminal releases on Nu Groove Records in the early '90s. Simonelli's "I Want You To Know", from the eponymous EP released in '91, enjoys a rerelease and remix overhaul on the upstart Deep Down Slam label. Inner Sense's Knows The Truth mix boosts the overall presence of Simonelli's original, by reinforcing the drums, hats and chords with deft touches of neoteric sound design, while Deep Down Slam label-head Washerman opts for cut up and interspersed vocals and loopy instrumentation in his mix. French house ball of fire Kool Vibe, turns up the heat - and punch - in his chord riffing remix, paying homage to a originator that's no doubt influenced his own productions.
Review: The Deep Down Slam label has Alex Agore supply some Rhodesy house for their third release. Swooning organs and various clatters of hats and percussion rattle "Show U Love" while stretched out synths lay spread over a syncopated bassline and cut vocals in "Get Dub". "No Name 3" sees more luscious Rhodes and chimey organs play out a dancey house melody, while "We Can't Talk" adds more chordal riffage to an EP which screams house music.
Review: Quality deep house labels aren't hard to come by these days, meaning the fledgling Deep Down Slam Records has its work cut out for it, but given the strength of this first release the label should have no problems establishing themselves. First up are the talents of rising house producer Washerman, whose jam "Tell Me" kicks things off in a 90s New Jersey house style, albeit one filled with a contemporary production nuance that makes it stand out amongst the crowd, while "Come Closer" offers a similar cut with good time chords which owe a considerable debt to French touch house. Meanwhile, No Matter What don James Johnston provides two expectedly thumping house cuts; "The Music" combines belting piano chords with rubbery strings that pull you in deep, while the tribal feel of "On The Ground" is accented by some alluring Motor City melodies.
