Review: Aybee's Deepblak imprint in Berlin via Oakland is sure fire when it comes to the proper deep stuff. Brooklyn's Octo Octa steps up this time and delivers the goods in fine fashion. "Body Drift" is a powerfully melancholic and soulful house affair that can create one of those rare divine moments of truth on the dancefloor. The sound is equally as heartfelt but more uplifting on next track "Further Out" with its soaring and immersive analogue strings supporting gentle piano notes and a seriously bumpy bassline; it could almost be mistaken for a DJ Sprinkles track. It doesn't let up on this EP; you've also got a smooth deep house number in the form of "Keep" with its sultry vocals above a suitably sparse arrangement; this one is thumpin'! Finally, the artist known as Maya Bouldry-Morrison provides us with a sombre after hours cut, aptly titled "House Of Snakes". Tip!
Review: Most recently seen on the Banyana EP for Japanese label Speed Of Sound, Damon Bell returns to his more regular home of Aybee's Deepblak label with the HIM EP, blending his influences in Afrobeat, bossa and batucada into some decidedly mechanical dance music. "Ezuku" sounds like vintage Jamal Moss without the excess grit, putting high pitched percussive textures together with subtle African rhythmic influences, while "Babylonian Spliffs" drags its sluggish bass and lolloping beats across the ground like a wounded animal. On the flip, "What" sees something a little straighter, but as hypnotically abstract as any recent Joey Anderson production, while "No Deuce No Dose (reprise)" sees a driving sequence of linear bleeps and trilling synth siren joined by some dramatically dystopian chords. Highly recommended!

Review: As Afrikan Sciences, Eric Porter has been pushing his own brand of freeform sonic experimentation incorporating elements and ideas from soul, jazz, broken beat and house in an abstracted manner that veers far off-grid. Far from prolific, Porter's project does share a close bond with the Deepblak label run by Aybee, who have issued all Afrikan Sciences material to date. With whispers of Afrikan Sciences material surfacing on PAN, Porter graces Deep Blak with a wonderfully unique second album entitled Theta Wave Brain Sync. Manipulating rhythm in a manner that's already quite hypnotic and meditative, the 11 tracks live up to Deepblak's billing that it will "let you go as deep, and far as you desire" and then some!
Review: Always committed to bringing interesting rhythms to bear on the world of house and techno, Aybee is back on his home turf with a fresh salvo of off-kilter drums and otherworldly synth tones that further his quest into pastures new for time-honoured dance music. "A Novel Gesture" rumbles with gritty kicks and stalking dub techno chords, and yet still manages to sound nimble on its feet. "We Come In Peace" is more purposefully floaty, swirling as it does around a central pad that takes on a three dimensional shape through some clever sound design, with just a gentle house beat underneath to keep it moving. "Akiara" is a devout bliss-out track not least in its delayed and filtered pulses pitched perfectly for heavy-lidded transcendence.
Review: With his many achievements in the field of true, critical deep house, Aybee has no need to remind anyone just what kind of imagination he has when it comes to crafting music, but he does just that on his latest LP Worlds. Just look to a track like "Landing", which shudders on some alien groove that's part jungle, part broken beat, and all sci-fi. Likewise "Moon's Whisper" plots an unknown course through galaxies of pads, and "What Is" equally revels in a cluster of starry chimes and tones. This is without a doubt an album of cosmic magnitude, carrying the futuristic torch that was passed on from the true techno fundamentalists and taking it somewhere fresh.
