Review: Defected's ongoing House Masters series should be essential listening for anyone keen to discover more about the recording careers of some of the scene's most iconic producers. Certainly, this latest installment, chronicling NYC legend Todd Terry's finest moments, contains far more hits than misses. At 35 tracks deep, it's a bit of a beast, but features not only all of his best-known productions ("Weekend", "Can You Party", "I'll House You", "Bango (To The Batmobile)", his remix of Everything But The Girl's "Missing"), but also a swathe of lesser-known remixes (A slammin' version of Bizarre Inc's "I'm Gonna Get You"), Dubs (a brilliantly stripped-back version of Hardrive's "Voices Inside My House") and original productions (the hip-house era madness of Black Riot's "Warlock").

Review: Up next for Defected's In The House series is the UK's DJ Haus, 'a decidedly untraditional DJ, producer, originator and DIY label innovator.' The Unknown To The Unknown and Hot Haus Recs boss has received big props from the underground house community and in Defected's opinion: he's an ambassador for the future of house music. Quite a compliment there! Serving up a a wicked collection of raw and jacking sounds that encompass electro, Chicago house, disco, techno and UK garage: and all very much on the lo-fi tip. The supporting cast on DJ Haus In The Haus is quite a remarkable one and musical highlights are not limited to: NYC hero X-Coast (who is fresh off a killer release on Underthesea) with last year's sleeper hit "Mango Bay", Aussie larrikin and Steel City Dance Discs boss Mall Grab with the wicked "Pool Party" through to stateside jams by Justin Cudmore - who gives us a taste of the acid life on "Forget It" and so does the master Matrixxman on the epic "The Spell" (Original Mix).

Review: For as long as we can remember, Defected's annual Miami Music Week compilation has done a brilliant job showcasing tracks that we'll be dancing to a lot in the following weeks and months. Predictably, this year's volume is no different. There's the usual mixture of alternative remixes of familiar favourites from the previous 12 months (see David Penn's remix of Sophie Lloyd's gospel disco anthem "Calling Out" and I:Cube's brilliant revision of Peggy Gou's "It Makes You Forget"), previously released anthems (Horse Meat Disco and Amy Douglas's "Let's Go Dancing" and Ray Mang's delicious disco mix of Phenomenal Handclap Band's "Judge Not") and suitably big tunes that will soon become peak-time staples the world over (see the tracks by Bawrut, Low Steppa, Bsicits and Mighty Mouse).

Review: DJ Deeon's original version of Freak Like Me was a house hit first time around - that's 20 years ago! Review: DJs and dancers of a certain age should recognize "Love Is Not A Game". The breezy, summery drum & bass cut, featuring soulful house style vocals by Kathy Brown, became something of an anthem following its release on Defected back in 2001. This re-release boasts two fresh remixes for 2017. Full Intention kick things off with an evocative, occasionally spine-tingling big room house version that places Brown's version atop a chunky, late night groove. Fittingly, J Magik provides the second re-rub, a "Rollers Mix" that fixes rubbery synth-bass and snippets of Brown's headline-grabbing vocals to a punchy, hybrid D&B/house groove.

Review: Further proof of the rude health of South Africa's house scene arrives in the form of a fine EP from Black Motion. The title track is something of a softly spun gem, with gentle acoustic guitars, fluid pianos, rich horns and emotion-rich soul vocals (provided by fellow South African Xoli M) clustering around organic sounding house percussion. It has the feel of a summer anthem in waiting. DJ Spen joins forces with Michele Chiavarini to provide vocal and dub remixes, both of which smartly emphasize the original's pianos and strings while adding chunky new beats. The result is a pair of revisions that drag the track further towards classic house territory. The EP also includes a neat bonus cut in the shape of Miss P collaboration "It's You", a track that's every bit as soulful, breezy and sumptuous as "Rainbow".

Review: Berlin's masked crusader returns! In an effort to resimulate his nightlife experiences with recent audiences as seen at his new event series The Masquerade, he's been led to create these delightful mixes featuring a collection of edits, exclusives and remixes which come as two parts: day and night. In the Berlin based producer's own words: "The night mix is one for your perfect club night. The day mix is the ice cubes in your cocktail". With that in mind, highlights on the former came in the form of some great remixes by the man himself, such as Ultra Nate vs Roland Clark with the rather bittersweet "The First Time Free", Simion vs MD X-Spress' "God Made Me Feel It" and Subb-An's slinky hit from a few years back "This Place (Nic Fanciulli Remix)". On the latter, chill or cruise to Canadian deep house godfather Nick Holder's remix of Daniel Steinberg's "No One Can Change Me" or Kapote's "Fuck Music" given one funky and lo-slung makeover by Berlin-Hamburg connection Session Victim.

Review: Here we have UK commercial house duo Copyright with their first Defected joint of 2015. "Be Together" is a big room chunk of funk-edged house - all rolling filtered grooves and soulful repetitive vocals courtesy of Andre Espeut. "Miss My Love" is the edgier of the two - all retro jackin 80s grooves and swirling synth riffs. Destined for some chart action for sure....

Review: London's Duke Dumont is still basking in the huge success of his synthpop hit Ocean Drive. However he started in the underground and his For Club Play Only series is his way of staying in touch with his roots. That said, his fourth instalment does see him defect from Tiga's Turbo Recordings to Defected, and lead track "Be Here" is a lot more commercial in sound. Boasting gospel diva vocals and warm, soulful 90s synth pads, the song is a radio friendly winner. "Worship", though, with its bleepy Italo disco bassline and melodies is the cooler of two tunes by far.

Review: Absent for a long time on Defected's roster, ATFC's Aydin is back finally with the disco-main room stomp of "Dazzle". Fusing some chopped, orchestral disco hits to a driving tech beat is a masterstroke, but it just gets better and better as he slyly loops parts from the sequence until they engulf the entire mix and rise to a huge, delirious climax. Backing "Dazzle" up is the samba-house of "Can You Feel It" which keeps the bass low and moody while cowbells and Latin percussion hits rattle away gloriously to keep things driving along nicely. Good to see a long-term funky-house don back on great form.
