Dirtybird Us

Dirtybird has been dropping basslines and creating smiles on the dancefloor since 2005 and Barclay Crenshaw (aka Claude VonStroke) has A&R'd some of the most influential house music producers in the world. A shortlist includes Justin Martin, Catz ‘N Dogz, Julio Bashmore, Riva Starr, Breach, Shiba San, Eats Everything, J Phlip, Style Of Eye, Kill Frenzy and many more, most of whom had their very first records on Dirtybird and even created their artist names for the label. Today, Dirtybird has offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles and has expanded into events and tour production. As it grows, the brand continues to expand beyond music into merchandising, licensing and artist management.

Brain Deals
Triiibaile - (5:32) 130 BPM
Review: Nestled inside the Dirtybird aviary for some time now, Cour T. officially takes flight with Brain Deals, the artist's debut album. Full of vibrant, colourful patterns, amusing vocal samples and playful synth accents, the album's dips through a flurry of interlocking club genres. All enthused with that trippy Dirtybird sound, Brain Deals bangs - be it bumping basslines ("Queenlove") to classic 2010s tech house-isms in "Madrugadao"- the album traverses the gamut of Americana dance music, dipping into acid techno with "Eraser" alongside other wicked mid-west influences. Endlessly
Endlessly - (3:55) 132 BPM
Review: Edward White has a reputation of forward thinking originals, as do the team behind the ever-expanding Dirtybird brand, with this latest three track offering playing into the more garage-sentric side of their catalogue. We open up with the squelching melodic drives and spacey pad warbles of 'Endlessly', a killer title track combining choppy breaksy drums and slithering synthetic jitters with awesome results. Next to this 'Vert' switches the focus to system-rupturing sub sweeps and spacey toplines, followed by the smooth vocal sampling and frankly stunning sonic backdrops of 'All I Want Is You', which ties the release off nicely with a sumptuous landing point.

Review: For their latest remix compilation, Californian label Dirtybird has selected some of its standout tracks over the years that have left a special mark, tapping some of the scene's finest for their reinterpretations. Highlights include Innervisions co-head Dixon's moody, tension-filled dub mix of "Urban Animal", Chi-town legend DJ Sneak bringing his unique brand of boompty-funk to a rework of label boss Claude Vonstroke's classic "Deep Throat", as well as veteran Harry 'Choo Choo' Romero's dancefloor drama version of Scavazza's "Shake Your Hearts" and label staple J.Phlip's version of Luca Lozano's "Berlinetta" among many others.

Freaks & Beaks Remixes
Flubblebuddy (Nikki Nair remix) - (4:56) 131 BPM
Review: Freaks & Beaks was Claude Von Stroke's last artist album, released in autumn 2020 at a time when the world was grappling with the impact of the pandemic. Now, two years later, with clubs and festivals re-opened, Dirtybird drops dance floor-primed remixes of tracks from the long player. The VNSSA remix of "These Notes In This Order" is a tough, pulsating slice of techno, while in contrast, for the reshape of "Youngblood", Rodriguez Jr. drops a stripped back, bleep-heavy workout. Nikki Nair has shot to prominence over the past few years, and this version of "Flubblebudd" shows why - based on a frequency shifting sub-bass, it's a distinctive electro track. Frankie also delivers a fine, off beat minimal take on "Frankie Goes To Bollywood".

Escape - (5:01) 134 BPM
Review: Whenever we see the Dirtybird US logo appear in the store we know we are likely in for one hell of a ride, as they this time welcome the combined flavours of Nala & Nikki Nair inside for a beautiful two-track display. Following on from a blippy introduction, jam-packed with glitchy pad textures and synthetic dives, 'The World Is Always Ending' evolves into a custom-built breaksy barricade-buster, pulsing it's way through your speaker system with a combination of purposeful distortion and chilling vocal displays, giving the whole arrangement a very well thought out feel. On the flip, we take in the acidic drips and potent electronic landscapes of 'Escape', a very enjoyable back up bubbler that serves as a perfect B-side. Fiery stuff indeed!

Dirtybird Campout Compilation 2021
Various
E.R.N.E.S.T.O - "Not Again" (original mix) - (4:24) 133 BPM
Review: A pretty sweet, always tongue-cheek-selection of tracks that takes in all types of club forms - Dirtybirds' Campout Compilations 2021 has arrived. Keeping it real for another year is real-time Dirtybird-vibes via the minimal club bangers of E.R.N.E.S.T.O's "Not Again" and Claude VonStroke & Harry Romero's "House Stepper". Keeping on key with the glitchy-trips is Cour T.'s "Restless Thinking". More tearout experimental dancefloor numbers come from Ardalan's "Road To Campout", with some hi-hat acid classics in Arnold & Lane's "Snooooo". For your serious surreptitious burners check Dipzy's "The Means" and for some mega Miami beats it's all about "Booty" by Teknicoz & JYNX!

Dresden Codex - (3:17) 133 BPM
Review: If you haven't caught up by now it's Dirtybird that's putting out the dopest in crossover club music at the moment, colliding the best in LA beat scene vibes with true UK rave ethics. Who else to represent such a sound as Ivy Lab, probably the best and most versatile in delivering a hybrid form to appease all ear; experimental and pop-minded. That's exactly the case here with a new school education of uptempo, acid and experimental breaks, with trippy beats to boot in "Press Play" and old school bass trips of "Dresden Codex". Get your anthemic UK liquid classics from "Options" while not forgetting to check ""BBQ" for your classic Flying Lotus looping gems.

Uh Yeah (Thee Acid Song) (Salva remix) - (6:39) 131 BPM
Uh Yeah (Thee Acid Song) (Acappella) - (7:28) 130 BPM
Review: In the words of Fatboy Slim 'everybody needs a 303', but few people can meet this need better than Thee Mike B. On the title track, the LA DJ/producer drops a searing, gurgling 303 as the backdrop for a hazy, frazzled tale about real-life acid indulgence. Lubelski's version is more linear and dancefloor-focused, with the 303 lines woven into a chord-heavy, niggling techno rhythm. Meanwhile, Salva veers in an electro direction for the second remix, with crisp break beats and shuffling 808s providing the basis for a combination of dazed vocals and raw acid lines. If you emerge with your sanity intact, there's also a tripped out acapella to contend with.

Poison (original mix) - (3:44) 133 BPM Hot
Review: As the story goes, a late night conversation about the past and future of dance music elicited this surprise left field collaboration from Justin Jay and Claude VonStroke. Jay's mission was simple: push VonStroke to the fringes. As Dirtybird express, VonStroke jumped at the idea of challenging creative expectations, with the result five and leftfield club tracks featuring the fine curation of a Pearson Sound remix which keeps it 'oh-so-minimal' - excuse the pun. An EP influenced by UK jungle, Detroit electro, Chicago juke and deconstructed hip hop inspirations that shaped much of the early Dirtybird sound, numbers like "Nucleus", "Poison" and "Woo" may differ radically but find themselves strung together by a sense of experimentation in polyrhythmic drum programming and dynamic, left of field arrangements. Originally distributed as a white label vinyl only release, this digital version is not to be missed.

Review: It has been exactly a year since Iranian DJ/producer Ardalan Noghre-Kar dropped his massive 'Mr Good' LP on the always reliable Dirtybird label. Now Claude Vonstroke & Co. serve up a series of remixes from the San Francisco-based artist's debut album, with highlights coming from: Bostonians Soul Clap who get deep down and dirty on "I Can't Wait", Dirtybird alumnus Kyle Watson with a suitably wonky rendition of "Osci", Brazilian upstart Cour.T with a tough rolling and druggy perspective of "Zombie Village" and Seattle scene veteran Pezzner handing in a mesmerising version of "Orange Dreams". The album was widely admired by critics, DJs, fans and industry alike, and these remixes chase up its success perfectly.

E.R.N.E.S.T.O - "Caracas" - (5:29) 131 BPM Hot
Review: With house parties most likely to be a big deal for the rest of the year stay safe and quarantined with this 2020 Couch-Out Compilation from Dirtybird! With touches of light fidget house making their way into the sleaze of Nick Siarom's "Living My Life" to heavier, gurgles of dub by Dutch Dannis, this year's Couch-Out Compilation arrives in conjunction with Dirtybird TV's recent virtual festival. For some harder drum tracks look to Mitch Dodge's "Body Breaks" - a track full of that stripped backed Dirty Bird sound - next to some more minimal and melodic Berliner tips from Robot Love's "What I Lived For". Dive deep into the rabbit hole with Sam Shelby's tripped out "Popo", the nostalgic rave and deep house of VNSSA, to some breakbeat, dub tinged and broken treats from Claude VonStroke & Mike Kerrigan. Freaks & Beaks
Warming Up The Bass Machines 2 - (0:55) 132 BPM
Review: 'Freaks and Beaks' is the fourth album from Dirtybird head honcho Claude VonStroke. Taking inspiration from the sense of humor shared between him and label partner Justin Martin, a love of experimentation with everything from hardware and modular synthesis to iPhone apps, and embracing genres as wide as ghetto tech, drum 'n' bass, hip-hop and breaks - together with his idiosyncratic style of minimal tech house. This is VonStroke's love letter to vibrancy and genre diversity. From the bass-driven acid jack of "Freaks Don't Fail Me Now", the trippy afterhours reductions of "Flubblebuddy" or "Youngblood (ft. Wyatt Marshall) to the influence of Bristol's similarly low-end driven sound as heard on "These Notes In Order" or for something different there's even a bit of blissed-out electronica - as heard on the evocative closer "Alpine Arpline".

Mr Good
Mr Bad - (4:59) 130 BPM
Review: The debut album by Dirtybird staple Ardalan Noghre-Kar consists of 11 tracks with an experimental twist, said to tell the story of the San Francisco-based producer's own coming of age tale He tells a story of self-acceptance and the goal towards becoming a perfect person, by way of learning to be yourself in a society where we're forced to hide our true traits and flaws. So yes, it's pretty deep, philosophically, but musically it's as obtuse, bass heavy and as much of a hot-damn party starter that you've come to expect from Claude Vonstroke & Co! Highlights include: the razor sharp bounce n' bass of opener "I Can't Wait", the sensual late night deep house of "Osci" with L.A. songstress Claire George, plus some throwback mid '00s electro house (of the dirtiest kind) on "Mr Good" (feat Party Patty) and the boomin' afterhours vibe of minimal thriller "Strength" (feat Erica Dee).

Min & Soda
Min & Soda - (5:42) 131 BPM
Review: Following releases on Curle and his own Items & Things label in 2018, Marc Houle makes a debut on Dirtybird. While the US producer rose to prominence during the minimal house boom of the mid-00s, Min & Soda is a radically different proposition. The title track is a steely techno affair, led by a clanging bass and sharp, crispy drums. It has more in common with stripped back Motor City sounds than the white noise-infested, hiccuping grooves Houle was known for. "Car and Driver" sees the US producer venture farther down the wormhole. Its mixture of noisy riffs and acrid 303s unravelling over doubled up claps mean that this is a blistering, peak-time affair.

Sage Armstrong - "Quest To The West" (original mix) - (4:50) 130 BPM
Review: It's that time again; west coast institution Dirtybird announce this year's Campout Compilation featuring an all-star cast who serve up some seriously bass-heavy tech house party vibes for the real freaks! Opening proceedings in great style is label mainstay Justin Martin with Ardalan on "Function" featuring the naughty vocals by PartyPatty on this boompty, sleazy and downright funky groove. Petz head honchos in Berlin Catz N Dogz serve up the the rolling and drugged out "Fixation", Bristol electro house hero Will Clarke gives us the typically buzzy and bouncy "Can You Funk" and for Spanish progressive house hero German Brigante is business as always on his darkly epic journey "Noose". Their latest acquisition, the young gun Justin jay presents the stripped down and bouncy teen spirit of "Hit It (original mix)" too. If that was not enough, Seattle legend Pezzner compiles all the tracks in a continuous mix for your listening pleasure.
