Review: If you're after a spot of classically warm and melodious deep house that doffs a cap to various vintage producers, styles and sub-genres - think Nu Groove-era Burrell Brothers, New Jersey garage and early '90s Italo-house in particular - then this EP from Italian veteran DJ Soch should be right up your alley. Such is the quality of the five tracks on show that we're finding it tough to pick out individual highlights, though there's something particularly potent about the effortless warmth of title track "The Power Of Poetry", the chunkiness of the "trad garage" number "Magic Flute", and the luscious Italian dream house revivalism of the Don Carlos-esque "Round The World".

Review: Having not released any music for two years, Jakub Fidos AKA Subjoi recently returned to action with his second EP for Shall Not Fade off shoot Lost Palms. This swiftness of this similarly impressive follow-up - this time on Distant Hawaii - suggests that he made great use of his time away. There's something particularly striking about the sheer heaviness of EO opener "Fairfax", a retro-futurist peak-time slammer rich in bombastic UK garage beats, rushing piano stabs and Todd Edwards style cut-up vocal samples, while the deeper (but no less forthright) "Like It Was" is almost as impressive. Elsewhere, "Drownin" is a hazy and picturesque two-step roller, "Shelter Me" doffs a cap to classic, organ-heavy New Jersey garage, and "When You Love Me" is a dreamy, pitched-down gem.

Review: If you've got a hankering to hear some bassbin-rattling business, this Distant Hawaii debut from relative newcomer Warwick should do the trick. Confident, weighty and well produced, it sees him shuffle between revivalist two-step garage (rumbling but sweet opener "Thinking Of You"), hybrid techno/breakbeat slammers (the bassline style low-end grunt, wild noises and cut-up hip-hop samples of "Theme Song (BFT Mix)"), cheery piano house positivity (the sun-kissed bounce of "Going Up (With The Help of a Piano)" and throbbing, warehouse-ready, riff-label techno ("CTO", which sounds like something Mella Dee would enjoy). Full throttle club cuts that tick all the right boxes: what's not to like?

Review: Following a run of vinyl-only EPs on Automatic Writing, Negentropy and Butter Side Up, Sweely returns to the digital domain via his first EP for Distant Hawaii for over two years. He kicks things off by lacing distant female vocal samples and ultra-deep chords over a techno-tempo speed garage beat on "You Can Try This", before wrapping squelching, acid-style electronics and doom-laden chords around a bouncy drums on "Feeling Cozy". The four-to-the-floor garage influences return on the Grant Nelson-doing-deep house flex of "I Do It Naturally", while closing cut "The Never Ending Groove" is a pleasingly elastic jog through jazzy deep house territory.

Review: East of Eden is a new alias from Italian producer Nicholas, a talented studio sort who has previously offered up a string of superb cuts heavily influenced by early '90s Italian and U.S house. This debut album from his new album does occasionally doff a cap to some of those sounds, but for the most part it offers a glassy-eyed, sunrise-ready take on Italian dream house and classic deep house laden with percussion sounds from around the world, lilting melodies, atmospheric chords and occasional inspired - and often unusual - instrumentation. Highlights include the sparkling warmth of Javontte hook-up "Days Go By", the organ-sporting, percussion-laden brilliance of "Adventures In The Dream Tribe (Part 2)" and the Sueno Latino style dreaminess of "Lost Horizon".

Review: We were suitably impressed by Mood J's sun-kissed Distant Hawaii debut - 2017's "Turn Your Love Around" - so hopes are naturally high for this belated sequel. Once again the producer has good times on his mind, with opener "Looking Further" offering a warm and groovy blend of punchy percussion, chunky synth bass and headline-grabbing vocal samples from a much-loved '80s soul favourite. There's a little more vintage U.S garage swing to hazy deep house bumper "Looking Forward", while the Loleatta Holloway-sampling "Don't Cha" is ultra-deep, heavy and locked-in in the best possible way. Rounding things off is "Tribute", a bouncy throwback to the mid-90s Italian house rich in stabbing acid riffs, sweet chords and sun-kissed melodic touches.

Review: It's a while since we heard from Prequel, a producer whose early outings on Rhythm Section International were particularly impressive. This EP not only marks his first appearance on Distant Hawaii, but also his sole EP of 2018. As usual, the swing of jazz is at the heart of what he does. Check, for example, the skittish, loose-limbed jazz breaks, bluesy samples, deep house bass and dreamy chords of "And Though It's Been Too Long", or the 21st century jazz-funk/deep house fusion of EP opener "The Song I Said I'd Make For You". Elsewhere, he ups the tempo and reaches for the blissful jazz guitars on the sublime floor-worker "People Say", before diving into even deeper waters on the slipped jazz-house of "Give Me Things That Don't Get Lost".

Review: There's something especially magical about "Besakih's Dragon's Clouds", the gentle, melodious and chiming lead cut from Giorgio Bacchin's latest outing under the Raw M.T alias. More akin to Steve Reich's "Music For 18 Musicians" after a night mainlining loved-up narcotics than a throbbing dancefloor banger, it brilliantly sets the tone for what follows. "Banjar Hot Springs" is a breezy, melodious and tactile chunk of dreamy deep house cheeriness, "Ulluwatu's God" a melodically intricate but rhythmically hypnotic chugger, and "Broken Sea" a stylistically accurate tribute to the wavy days of Italian ambient house (albeit with a few nods towards likeminded Japanese producers from the same period).

Review: Having emerged just over a year ago, Adelaide's Vlad Gavrilov - AKA DJ Heure - has yet to make a duff move. Deep house polished with class and driven by weighty production; every dispatch has been gold so far. Including this return to Distant Hawaii; "Metcha" makes itself known with strange percussive slurs and woozy chords while "Rue De Saintonge" and "I Want To Be There" strut and twinkly with an illustrious deep 4/4. Finally we hit "Deuce". The most startling cut of the set thanks to its stark fracturism and epic cascades of cosmicity. O la la.

Review: Chicago's Garrett David runs Stripped & Chewed with Adam Rowe and works at infamous local institution Gramaphone Records. He returns to Lobster Theremin sublabel Distant Hawaii with a five track EP of 'beach bronzed cinematic house, delivered in his trademark unhurried style.' The Smart Bar resident serves up "Vermillion" a very 808 State sounding classic jam from the acid house era and the equally retro sounding "Down Around" which is more on the Balearic vibe: by way of early Rhythim Is Rhythim. On the flip, the lush and mysterious ambient house journey "Stewing" soon leads into "Simple In Spring" which is probably the EP's finest moment and sounds like another lost tape from the early Transmat or Planet E catalogue.

Review: As spring begins to turn to summer, Distant Hawaii is already in full-on sunshine mode. You'll certainly struggle to find a more cheery, sun-kissed and positive house cut than "Turn Your Love Around", the cut that opens this label debut from recent L.P.C debutant Mood J. Based around samples from the well-known 1980s dancefloor jam (we'll not mention the source), it's as colourful a chunk of boogie-fuelled party house as you're likely to find. The smile-inducing positivity doesn't end there, either: check, for example, the Balearic arpeggio lines and warm dream house vibes of "The Arps", the glistening Balearic house tunefulness of "Moonlight Drive" (all rubbery bass, cascading melody lines and life-affirming chord progressions) and the smoky deep house dustiness of "NY Vibration".

Review: Tony Donson's first EP under the Dj Sonikku alias, Secret Island on Distant Hawaii, had us purring on its February 2016 release. Happily, this return to Lobster Theremin's cheery house offshoot is every bit as vibrant, colourful and playable. It sees him tick a few boxes along the way; check, for example, the throbbing Italo-disco style arpeggio lines, energetic, cowbell-laden beats, exotic melodies and jangly flamenco guitars of opener "El Bombo" and the revivalist positivity of "Sky Sanctuary", where fluttering synth melodies and humid electronic motifs cluster around a bouncy, late '80s style house groove. Arguably best of all, though, is closer "Midnight Forest", a sumptuous stroll through Italian dream house territory that's as wavy as it is endearingly positive.

Review: Since contributing Distant Hawaii's debut release back in 2015, Tom 'Hidden Spheres' Harris has showcased his dusty, musically expansive take on deep house on Bradley Zero's Rhythm Section International imprint. On this return to Distant Hawaii, he infuses MPC-driven deep house grooves with elements borrowed from synth boogie, Italian deep house, and tropical jazz. There's plenty to get the juices flowing, from the fluid jazz breaks, tumbling pianos and layered synth doodles of the barely-titled opener, to the saucer-eyed bliss of dream house shuffler "By & Bye" and sun-baked warmth of "Beachy". Closer "Movin", a jazzy deep house outing blessed with some killer keys, is also superb.

Review: The Nice, France based producer and live act William Montana aka Sweely has appeared previously on dtape and La Chinerie and now on Lobster Theremin sub label Distant Hawaii. On the All The Reasons EP, he starts out with the lush title track; a deep and dusty tribute to the Kenny Dixon Jr sound with sultry Rhodes, rusty rhythms and a hypnotic vocal refrain. "Around" is a more straight up affair, bouncy and jackin' around in loopy fashion like the best of Motor City Drum Ensemble's Raw Cuts series. On the flip, we've got "Yes He Is", geared more for the late night on this evocative and bittersweet number relying on dubbier elements while "Blue Faces" gets stuck right into the known LT vibe with its overdriven/tape saturated aesthetic. Retaining the sombre dubbed out sounds as heard previously but expressed in more more vividly emotive fashion.

Review: With his 2015 debut EP for Breaker Breaker, London-based deep house misfit Ross From Friends made a seriously big impression. Much was made of his dusty, fidgety, lo-fi sound, and his penchant for jamming out tunes using outboard hardware. This belated follow-up for Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii takes a similar approach, kicking off with the loved-up chord progressions, clattering drum machine percussion, redlined tape hiss and heart-aching vocal samples of "Talk To Me You'll Understand". "Gettin' It Done" is an altogether more positive and Balearic-minded trip into dusty deep house territory, while "Bootman" makes merry with mutilated '80s soul samples, hazy chords and fuzzy drums.

Review: Distant Hawaii, the wavy Lobster Theremin offshoot, seems like the perfect home for Garrett David's lighthearted strain of house music, and we are very impressed with the Smart Bar resident's development over his last three EPs. The Chicago DJ and producer drops a pulsating little bomb in the form of "Octagon Blues", but "Power Up" is what truly brings his Chicago roots through thanks to its funky, jazzed 'out sound that never goes anywhere near being cheesy. On the flip, "Remedy" is sunken and aqueous in shape and texture, whereas "Healing Channel" eradicates the beats and percussion in favour of warm, hollow chords that spew neatly onto an off-kilter beat with a broken house edge.

Review: Lobster Theremin's Distant Hawaii offshoot, launched earlier this year with a fine EP from Hidden Spheres, seems to have been designed to offer a colourful, vibrant alternative to its' parent label's dystopian techno. Certainly, the bubbly and deliciously positive fare served up here by debutant Tony "DJ Sonikku" Donson perfectly fits the bill. Apparently it was partly created using a Sega Megadrive, and there's definitely a 16-bit feel to the whistle-happy percussion, drawn-out chords and cheery melodies of "Secret Island". The other two tracks are equally Balearic in outlook, variously utilizing sampled slap-bass notes, synthesized steel drum melodies, classic New Jersey organs, and eyes-closed solos in a bid to squeeze maximum sun-drenched positivity from each moment.

The mood is summery and the vibes are housey; "Waiting" kicks things into motion with a pseudo tribal beat and some lovely deep house action, while "Upsn Downs" goes a little off-kilter thanks to its rattling percussion samples and sporadic beat. "Be A Man" enters the Detroit house territories thanks to its gorgeous pads and lo-fi vocal samples, and "Bill Loves You" chuck groovy jazz instrumentation over a slick groove.
