Review: The Distorsion team have gone out of their way with this brand new compilation drop entitled 'Breakbeat Essentials', which sees them pull together a super impressive twenty-part selection, showcasing the best of breakbeat artists right about now. From the more twisted bass designs of 'Fucking Beat' from Hankook and Eztereo's 'Have To Go' to Yo Speed & Mutantbreakz's super techy arrangements of 'Need More Dog', we see this compilation explore such a vast range oft he breakbeat sound, shining a light on some of the more under-appreciated areas of the sound. Some of the immediate standouts have to include Suga7's super intricate bass soundscaping on 'Let Me Hit', alongside the crunchy, horn-like textures on Kid Panel's 'Kasmir'. Awesome work!

Hibiscus
Hibiscus - (5:24) 132 BPM
Played by: Mr Brainz
Review: While this track has some serious energetics, it's got this cool laid back swag about it that sets it a--side from a lot of current UK Garage doing the round at the moment. There's a collection of sounds which remind us of DJ Zinc back in his garage hay days but the low and slow pulsating sub is the star of the track.

Beat Goes
Beat Goes - (6:14) 134 BPM Hot
Beat Goes (Hexadecimal remix) - (5:07) 134 BPM
Beat Goes (B-Phreak remix) - (5:23) 128 BPM
Review: Vibrant party vibes abound as Hungary's Kid Panel becomes Kid Panel Beater, smashing out a distinct groove with his trusty funk hammer. Filtered guitars and a lolloping bassline work their charm over some rock-solid beats as the fusion effortlessly hypnotises. If you enjoyed Slyde's early work, you best jump on this. Two fine remixes follow; Hexadecimal gets his wobble on and creates sound that conjures up fine memories of Mason's "Exceeder". B-Phreak, meanwhile, gets all edgy and saw-toothed over a chop-slapping tropical beat. Three totally different vibes; one exceedingly heavy release.

Looking Holywood
Looking Holywood - (5:23) 130 BPM Hot
Looking Holywood (Mutantbreakz remix) - (5:38) 130 BPM
Review: Spain's Hnoize cooks up a fiery electro storm on Distortion with his latest, "Looking Holywood". Driven by a catchy vocal that reminds of Steve Miller's "Abracadabra", Hnoize lets the bass shine as it swaps between sub punishing lows and squelchy, gritty highs over a sick bed of club-happy beats. Mutantbreakz drops a well-suited mix that adds a high-pitched Dutch lead and some breakbeat snares.

Lola
Lola - (6:20) 136 BPM Hot
Shake - (5:57) 133 BPM
On & Off - (5:51) 134 BPM
Sweet Song - (5:47) 134 BPM
Review: Spain's The Brainkiller loads up four more gritty breaks punishers for this new release on Distorsion, with title tune "Lola" riding live percussion hits over a flange-heavy bass sequence, "Shake" looking to the stars with some astral arpeggios while "On & Off" uses fragments from a classy '90s R&B classic over its punchy drums. "The Sweet Song" rounds off the single with touches of '80s movie soundtracks floating over the tweaked bass and nose diving lead sounds.

Physical
Neptuno - (6:25) 133 BPM
Physical - (5:55) 133 BPM Hot
Profundo - (5:25) 133 BPM
Review: Italian breaks demon The Brainkiller gets deep and moody on these three new tunes for the Distorsion label, with "Neptuno" reaching out into the cosmos with some crunchy, galloping synth work and astral strings firmly tied down by hefty, full-fat beats. Title tune "Physical" continues the space-meets-bass theme, with a triplets breakdown launching off into a full-on beat-driven assault while final tune "Profundo" gets truly epic with an orchestral charge ushering in a truly immense drop.
