Epibenthos Mbira EP
Benthos - (6:10) 128 BPM Hot
Hadal - (6:02) 128 BPM
Nekton - (7:07) 128 BPM
Upwelling - (6:45) 130 BPM
Review: One of the pioneers of the deeper side of the dub techno sound, Luke Hess' catalogue speaks for itself and includes numerous releases for FXHE, Echocord and Minimood. Now he teams up with Joshua Harrison for his latest release. "Benthos" is a typically hypnotic Luke Hess jam, with layered chords unfolding over dubbed out beats. "Hadal" sees the pair go deeper, with cavernous synth lines married to a spiky rhythm. "Nekton" moves closer to Echocord's approach, thanks to the use of sweeping chords and swooshing effects. Closing out this fine release is "Upwelling", where the two Detroit producers deliver a clubby take on the sound, led by a galloping groove and featuring tranced out chords.

Review: Already responsible for EPs this year on Semantica and Figure Jams, Albert Van Abbe now makes his debut on the long-established Echocord Colour. Klangbilder is more streamlined and direct than some of the Dutch producer's earlier material. The first "Klangbilder" revolves around tough, rolling drums, steely percussion and eerie synth lines that insinuate their way through the percussive arrangement. On the second instalment, a nagging analogue sound prevails thanks to Van Abbe's use of shuffling drums, rough tones and bleep sequences. "Klangbilder 3" is more reflective and slower, as he paints an atmospheric picture, while the fourth and final iteration continues to explore this mood with a wonderfully expansive sound scape.

Power Factor EP
Sandtext - (7:00) 124 BPM
Wet - (6:23) 124 BPM
Back Stroke - (6:53) 127 BPM Hot
Review: It's been quite a journey for Stephen Brown over the past twenty or so years. From the hyper speed abstract techno of his early releases on Djax and Scandinavia, the Scottish producer has more recently moved into melodic house. However, this release on Danish label Echocord sees Brown make a rare nod to his techno past. "Sandtext" and "Back Stroke" are in keeping with Echocord's deep, dubby sound, with chugging drums shaping the former and a deft filtered riff at the heart of the latter. But it's on "Wet" that Brown deviates from this script; jittery, nervy drums and Hood-esque synth stabs make for the kind of out there, minimal techno that he used to specialise in during the 90s.

Facette
Emerald - (6:25) 125 BPM
Lumen - (6:47) 128 BPM
Myriads - (6:41) 125 BPM Hot
Review: Despite his long association with fellow Detroit artists like Omar-S and OB Ignitt, Luke Hess remains out on his own. This is largely because, as Facette shows, he has a unique sound that draws on European as well a US influences. Opening track "Emeralds" has echoes of Motor City synths, but at its heart is a driving, dub rhythm. Similarly, on "Lumen", euphoric chord stabs are fused with a heads-down groove that'll resonate in big rooms. "Myriads" sees Hess return to Detroit techno influences with waves of hissing percussion riding a snaking, metallic groove with echoes of vintage Robert Hood and Stacey Pullen.

Matrix Sequence EP
Ecto - (7:36) 126 BPM
Mocto - (6:27) 125 BPM
Morphing - (6:18) 124 BPM Hot
Review: Apart from releases on his own Baum label, Dennis Bog aka Resoe has almost exclusively put material out on Kenneth Christiansen's Echocord label and offshoots. Matrix Sequence doesn't mark a radical difference in sound from his usual output, but it does succeed in demonstrating that dub techno can be deadly effective on the dance floor. There's the deep chords and firing percussion of "Ecto", while on "Mocto", tough kicks lead Bog's dazed, frazzled textures onto the dance floor. Final track "Morphing" sees the Danish producer abandon his expansive textures and adopt a more subterranean feel; gone are sound scapes, replaced by acrid acid licks and dense, shuffling beats.

Our Rotten Roots
Put On Your Red Shoes And Trance - (9:20) 128 BPM
Just Jackin Around Man - (8:54) 128 BPM Hot
Review: The output on Kenneth Christiansen's sub-label is often as impressive as the releases on its parent - and this is certainly true of Roots. It's the second release by Scott 'Deadbeat' Monteith on Echocord Colour and also marks a change of direction for the Canadian producer. "Put On Your Red Shoes And Trance" is a wiry, tweaked acid-heavy affair that sounds radically different to his usual dub techno style. Similarly, "Just Jackin Around Man" is also unlike the Deadbeat sound. Utilising a pitched-down vocal sample over a driving rhythm, Monteith adds in some rolling kettle drums. The end result is as far removed as possible from Echocord's cavernous signature sound.

Good Vibrations
Bent - (6:15) 129 BPM
Repeat Rate - (6:48) 125 BPM Hot
Good Vibrations - (6:35) 125 BPM
Review: Brendon Moeller appeared on the Echocord sub-label back in 2012 with Buzz Factory, so a follow-up release was long overdue. "Bent" is stripped back yet complex, with Moeller en-snaring the listener in a web of steely, mangled rhythms. On "Repeat Rate", he reverts to the typical Echologist sound; ominous chords roll in like grey thunder clouds as the South Afri-can producer drops bolts of industrial steel masquerading as a techno rhythm. The title track is like a half-way house between these two sounds; again, he rolls out churning, dubby chords, but these play out against a lean, stripped back groove.

Mobilhome - (6:40) 124 BPM

Review: For his third release on esteemed label Echocord, it sounds like Roberto Clementi is taking a leaf from the Fachwerk book of techno production. This approach is most audible on "Fifty HF", where the Italian producer drops shaking, niggling percussion and woozy organ solos over a tight, stepping rhythm. Close your eyes and it could be Mike Dehnert or Roman Lindau. The title track doesn't wear its influences so clearly, and reverts to Echocord's in-house sound. A repetitive chord stab and some woozy synths play away in the background as Clementi drops tight percussion and an insistent, shaking rhythm that oozes funk.

Crate Diggin On Planet Omnom - (1:16) 138 BPM
Review: Luke Hess is one of the few techno producers who effortlessly flits between European and US sounds. This is reflected in the type of labels he releases on - Omar S' FXHE and Danish imprint Echocord. Hess' latest missive for Echocord typical of his sound; "Pillars of Creation" sees him fuse deep, dubby beats with Basic Channel chords, while "Gravitational Effects" further explores this approach, using insistent percussion and a cavernous bass. The release finishes with the spoken word oddity that is "Crate Diggin On Planet Omnom", but this releases' real highlights are Hess' tough, dubby club tracks and his ability to transcend scenes and genres.

Losange - (4:54) 126 BPM Hot
Chaleur Tournante - (5:27) 128 BPM
Review: Although he is primarily focused on his own label, Berliner Mike Dehnert is known on occasion to release for other imprints. Most notably, his The Many Roots on Deeply Rooted House is one of his most impressive and accomplished records. This three-track release for Danish operation Echocord is somewhat muted. It feels like after nearly a decade of dropping dark, dubby techno, Dehnert is enjoying some much-needed introspection. This manifests itself on the understated, rolling title track, but is more audible on "Losange". Like a stepping, spindly take on minimal, its stripped back rhythms are populated by husky vocal samples. Meanwhile, "Chaleur Tournante" is a return of sorts to Dehnert's sound, a dubby groover with that unmistakably insistent backing rhythm.

Barrell - (6:00) 125 BPM
Traps - (5:41) 118 BPM
Bonton (Norman Nodge remix) - (6:37) 128 BPM Hot
Review: With an impressive track record behind him and a keen grasp of both texture and atmosphere, Italian producer Roberto Clementi is a good fit for Echocord Colour. This second part of his label debut rams the point home. "Barrell" is deep, woozy and undulating, with ricocheting electronics riding a formidably hypnotic, locked-in techno rhythm. "Traps" goes deeper still, with eyes-wide-shut chords and subdued, sci-fi electronics complimenting a shuffling dub techno groove. Berghain resident Norman Nodge has a stab at remixing "Bonton" (the original of which is available on the first part of the release), delivering a version that sits somewhere between hypnotic, lo-fi techno and vintage Chicago jack.
