Review: Rising Sun aka Steffen Laschinski drops a deep, dubbed out EP for the storied Echocord label. Drawing on ambient and dub techno influences, he delivers an introspective, atmospheric release. Half-heard vocal samples drift through the gentle textures of "Eternal 4", while a similar approach applies on the deep techno without beats of "Eternal 1". On "Eternal 3", there is a semblance of a groove, but it is quickly submerged in dubbed out sound scapes. However, Laschinski does hit a dance floor groove pace on "Eternal 5", delivering a rolling, spaced out techno track tailor made for Echocord's audience.

Review: Harvey 'El Choop' Jones returns to Echocord after Insane Sends. Like that 2021 release and the rest of his catalogue, Closing Motif is inspired by classic techno. In keeping with the Echocord style, "Faith" is a chord-heavy dub track. On the title track, Jones also chooses an esoteric approach. On this occasion however, it revolves around a more dance floor friendly, steely rhythm, which acts as the basis for billowing, dreamy synths. The label has also chosen two respected producers to reshape El Choop's work. Deadbeat turns "Faith" into a downtempo, hollowed out dubby affair. Luke Hess' take on "Closing Motif" is similarly introspective, but with an added layer of melancholy, rainy synths.

Review: Matthew Kaden releases his debut album as Mathimidori, nearly ten years after the release of the project's first EP. Akebono, which has found its natural home on the Danish label Echocord, starts with the reflective "Java" and "Maiia", before Kaden moves into the reflective, chord-heavy "Kioku" and the vocal-sampling "Shao". He raises the pace, albeit slightly, for the dreamy, floaty grooves of "Kobe" and "Asaka", which resound to deep piano keys and floaty vocal samples. Kaden shifts pace again and moves back to downtempo sounds for the woozy title track and the gentle, ebbing rhythm of "Soso". All of these elements combined make for an understated masterpiece.

Review: With the many of us indoors at the moment we can only think of STL, out there somewhere in the German wilderness...enjoying the peace, serenity, lovely surroundings and dub techno. It all comes out in this Take Off EP with new shades of resonators reflecting a refreshed STL shimmer in "Fluxxy" and "Dub Plus", with cushy noise floors and playground atmospheres taking both numbers into DeepChord's Grandbend territory. Deeper house inflected dub techno in full effect here with "Magic Thing" offsetting the EP with a pumping, EBM-disco alternative.

Review: Forest Drive West's dub-artic explorations finds itself in the Scandianavian fjords of Denmark with navigational support from dub techno beacon Echocord. Like a subaqueous blip on a sonar's radar it's "Creation Dub" that sets this record its course into the deepest, sinkiest realms of DT. With more stylistic rhythms introducing themselves into tracks like "Parallel Space" and "Drift", fresh rhythms and coldlier winds still offer slight touches of aurora borealis. Conforce sends in the chords with his remix to "Parallel Space" which go off like flares floating above the depths of a subterrain space they came from.

Review: Dub techno specialist Idealist returns to Echocord, to following up last year's brilliant Source EP. Mind Field is the enigmatic producer's second full length offering, after 2016's Firewood Road on his own Idealmusic. It showcases a great evolution of his sound: after the powerful opener "Explorer" an emotive and hands in the air house stomper (or later the austere factory floor stomp of "Smoke & Mirrors" later), the rest of the EP remains in the cavernous and glacial sonic realms you've come to expect from the Swiss producer. A collection of deeply emotive and reductive versions where warm yet forceful bass frequencies roll along a ghostly trail of reverb and echo.

Review: Berlin hero Sven Weisemann makes his debut on Danish dub techno authority Echocord and follows up last year's mighty fine Separate Paths EP on Delsin. Carrying on from said release, Weisemann sure remains consistent with these four servings of expertly executed dub techno excursions on the Bilateral Relations EP. Opening up with the lush and evocative ambient house of "Lunation" which bears a similar sound to his recent efforts on Mojuba, he then serves up the straight up title track: minimal dub techno done proper. "Monistic" is more typical Echocord faire: glacial mysterious and deep. Finally the Valve tr9 remix of "Decimation" has more of a techno influence and a tougher rhythm section, but the haunting dub chords and greyscale textures remain.

Review: Andreas Tilliander's debut release on Echocord makes one wonder why this connection did not happen sooner. The Swiss producer has a rich catalogue for labels like Borft and Mille Plateaux, but on Ofog, he sounds really at home on the Danish label. "Storet" is a frazzled, dubby techno groove, featuring multi-layered textures and dark bass pulses. It's exactly the kind of track that Kenneth Christiansen's label specialises in. "Oliveros" is based on a slower tempo, but features the same kind of moody textures, while the pace picks up on "Risset". There, Tilliander delivers a master class in slinky dub techno understatement.

Review: Zurich producer and DJ, Idealist, has been quietly churning out magnetic shades of house and dub techno since 2012. Through his own Idealistmusic, along with a number of other below-radar imprints, we have been graced by a gentle yet penetrative sound that recalls the very best of the 90s Berlin scene. So much so, in fact, that he's been called upon by the excellent Echochord label to run the dub techno slayings across three cuts. "Flow" is a powerful, direct slice of techno that fades its deep basslines and synths out into the ether, producing a hypnotic effect that we're big fans of. "Nucleus" slows the pace down but doesn't hold back on those prototypical dub chords in what makes for a real 3am kinda lick, while "Accumbens" pokes its head out of the depths and produces a tight drum roll backed by soothing, meditative synths. Class.

Review: Kenneth Christiansen's revered dub techno institution celebrates fifteen years of trusted innovation on this superb compilation showcasing the label's esteemed roster of legends. Starting out with the always impressive Stephan Laubner aka STL who surprises as always; this time with the haunting yet bittersweet ambient journey "The Ancient Scale". There's more from masters of the old school such as German producer Arovane and his broken low end theory on "Struktur 1", the deeply rooted resonations of XDB's "Latonal" and Fachwerk main man Mike Dehnert's Maurizio inspired "Track Providing Home" being one of our highlights.

Review: Stephan Laubner follows up the first "Message" from earlier this year with the sublime Part 2. The release starts with the mysterious textures and dubbed out beats of "Nite Train", a gentle groove that seeps through the speakers. Next up is "Make Believe", which is faster and more tracky, its scuffled beats and croaking rhythm sounding like Laubner's own version of Chain Reaction. The release then veers back into ambient, soft-focus house with "Deep Stare", where airy, atmospheric textures prevail. It wouldn't be a Laubner record without some loop action and he ends the release with the soupy, dense "Loop 1" and "Loop 2".

Review: Despite a high number of releases over the years, Stephen 'STL' Laubner has maintained consistently high standards. The German producer's love of knotted, dense DJ tools resurfaces on Message of Sound, and the more adventurous DJs will have loads of fun with the spiky, stepping "Loop 1" and "Loop 2". Far more interesting however are Laubner's flirtations with what could be loosely described as deep house. On "Inside Out", that takes the shape of swirling melodic plumes and deep, dubby beats while "Heavy Snow" sees a more loose arrangement prevail, with loose, wiry drums supporting tones that are as white and pure as snowflakes themselves.
