Review: Peter Van Hoesen and Yves De May are easily two of the very best techno artists out there. Just to clarify, they are excellent at creating true techno music, not the sort that looks to the past; both producers have been pushing the boundaries since they got into the scene, and it's no wonder that they've been associated to labels like Sandwell District - now sadly defunct - Tresor, and Dekmantel. Here, they reappear on the excellent Editions Mego with Ground & Figure, an album that explores all corners of the term 'techno', from the more beat-centric to the utterly abstract, and drone-like. Tracks like "Porter Swiss" provide a minimal, almost skeletal strain of dance music, while others like "Perfect Boulevard Exclusive" are lean, stripped and devoid of anything dance-related. The important thing is that these two are conjuring their own sound, a dark and ritualistic aesthetic that provides the listener with something fresh, compelling and provocative. Sublime.

Review: If you've ever wondered who runs the magnificent Editions Mego label, you've finally got your answer and you can actually hear their sounds. Pita aka Peter Rehberg is veteran of the experimental electro-acoustic scene, and his earliest work dates back to the mid-1990's; it was only a few years after that when he started his label, originally name simply Mego. Get In is the natural follower to 2008's Get Out, and if you were looking for docile, pale-faced ambient music, then this might be a bit marmite. We absolutely love it, it's the right blend of force and subtlety, and it stands there among the best of Mika Vainio's recent work. As a matter of fact, Pita's airy yet harsh sonics have a lot in common with the whole Sahko label and the Finnish school of noise. Clean, precise, loud and in your face.

Review: Recorded last year at Rome's contemporary art museum, MAXXI is as graceful and noble as the environment in which it was created. "Intro" sets the tone for this work with its understated pulses and chilling synths. This leads into the deeper, more textured depths of "Sonia Danza" and the aptly named "Dreamscape Generation", which features warbling streams and rivulets of sound, squelches and chatter, like a moist riverbank on a spring morning. "Orange Steps" and "Scintille" are serene and more reflective, after this veritable flurry of musical activity. The release finishes with "Max", a cover of a piece by Italian composer Paolo Conte, but its chimes and layered textures are unmistakably Neel and Dozzy's.

Review: You may have stumbled across Finnish maverick Ilpo Vaisanen in many different corners of fringe electronics, whether via his work alongside Mika Vainio in Pan Sonic or perhaps when he and Vainio linked up with Alan Vega, or maybe when he was involved in Rude Mechanic. Whatever the case, he's certainly no stranger to Mego, where he appears on the Editions arm with this latest project, Communist Dub. It's a sleek and focus affair that keeps proceedings as stripped back as possible, taking a minimalist approach to electronic dub that makes the likes of Pole sound extraneous. In the fine slithers of echoing percussion and sparse mixes, there is a deadly attention to detail that truly gets under the skin.

Behold
Behold One - (18:43) 115 BPM
Behold Two - (23:23) 143 BPM
Review: Following their collaborative album Indeed which dropped in 2011, Oren Ambarchi and Jim O'Rourke join forces once more to deliver the two-track epic Behold for Editions Mego. Fans of this pairing will know what to expect, as daring soundscapes fill with a multitude of sound sources carefully processed into a simmering whole, stretched out over long form running times for the ultimate immersive experience. "Behold One" revels in suspended animation as its textures very gently rise and fall, while "Behold Two" takes a more lively route towards a clanging, droning crescendo driven by organic and electronic matter.

Review: Fusing noise with dubwise electronica, Bolder sees the pairing of Martin Maischein and Peter Votava for a lengthy EP that explores a worthwhile meeting point between drone and rhythm. "Extraterrestrial Deactivity" sums this up perfectly as it starts on a single chilling tone which seems unlikely to head elsewhere, only to be side-swiped by a slow half-step beat embellished with reverb. Indeed there's plenty of compositional action going on that repositions the more ambient scrapes and swells in amongst crafty productions not afraid to get into a groove. "Morbid Funk Ride" lives up to its name with gusto, while "Passive Aggressive" stalks forth on a malevolent bassline and broken techno pulses.

Shut In
Shut In (part one) - (15:36)
Shut In (part two) - (15:50)
Played by: Wesley Matsell
Review: Also available on cassette, this latest Kevin Drumm release for Editions Mego is another fine example of the time-lapsing craft that the Chicago-based artist has made his own over a monolithic volume of releases. Split into two fifteen minute pieces, both sides of Shut In centre around a constant hum that modulates with glacial patience that renders the pace of the world outside irrelevant. It's the ultimate in musical subtlety, not to mention wholly comforting and engrossing once you submit yourself to the exercise. By the time additional harmonies and resonance seep into the sound its hard to tell how far through you might be, and of course it hardly matters. Truly transcendental tones for those who like to play the long game.

Signaux
Signaux 1 - (17:56) Hot
Signaux 2 - (18:01)
Review: Robert Hampson is something of an unsung hero within the drone/noise circuit - an impressive catalogue of seminal releases dating from the 90s have yet to bring him into the limelight. This could all be pr-planned of course, and this latest LP on Editions Mego is certainly proof of his ability to produce rugged soundscape terrains and chilling sci-fi reminiscent electronic music. Both pieces are a near twenty minutes of mutating melodies, effects and synthesizers, with "Signaux 1" representing Hampson's more impulsive side - sharp tones and trickling noises develop into a thick layer of fuzzy sonics and feedback. "Signaux 2" is a more sparse outlook into the possibilities of tone repeats and oscillator drones, one which favours subtlety and fine tweaking. Highly recommended.

Fa 2012
Fa 2012 - (9:05)
Fa (Mark Fell remix) - (11:47) Hot
Review: The notorious "Fa", featured on the classic LP, Hotel Paral.lel by Fennesz gets a welcomed re-edit by the man himself, on Editions Mego. More than 15 years after its release, the track still sounds as fresh as ever - managing to blur the lines between club music and drone psychedelia, but this 2012 reinterpretation adds an extra breath of warmth and subtlety thanks to its extended arrangement. Mark Fell aka Sensate Focus combines a healthy dosage of prophetic vocals and sharp percussion on the (digital) B side, without compromising the original's sparseness and freedom of movement. Spectacular journeys into sound.
