Review: Emotional Response's 10th-anniversary celebrations are brought to a superb close with Benedikt Frey. He serves up a magnificently dubbed out and psychedelic cover version of Joy Division's 'She's Lost Control' across four different versions. The vocal version might be the best for us - it retains that compelling dark drum funk you expect from the band with eerie synth additions and hefty bass. The instrumental is more slow and dubbed out in a traditional sense with the Lucas Croon dub doused in endless reverb. Last of all is a dub by Frey himself that is full of open space and bass bin distorting headiness.

Review: Emotional Response celebrates its 50th release with something special from label stalwart Roy Of The Ravers. Following 2019's magnum opus White Sunrise II is the accompanying Soliel, where our nom dee plume delves further into his archives of recently rediscovered disks. The music too is more expansive, with the ambient and techno signatures matched with touches of jazz keys, Balearic sampledelica and even acoustic outtakes, all with that Ravers humour included. The opening cinematic symphonies of The Smell Of Orange Peel and Kliszewicz Klopcic Klim highlight again a side not seen on his more acid / club cuts found on various labels. Expectations are confounded with the deep house meets techno melodics of City Limits, before the ever-expanding feel-good vibrations of center piece Feathers hooks all. Sometimes a simple groove and catchy vocal sample is all you need to create a classic. The second half then glides with 14 minutes of house dramatics via Versace 101624, a master of arrangement and beats, preempting the interlude of Clock House's return. To close, EL-9400's intense scatter percussion melds with anthemic acid undertones before its second half melts to a choral ambience, leading to the closing acoustic jam dub curiosity My Brother And His Mate and the curtain for another stage in the Roy sagas.

Review: Following 2012's acclaimed Red Nail album, machine manipulator, DJ, collector and music auteur Cherrystones has been consistently working - composing, producing, editing, educating, programming, soundtracking and performing. Biding time, considering and now ready to present the latest instalment of his journey. After completing the Critical Mass compilation, he left London for Scotland for two years to isolate. An experiment to truly find himself, with no social circle or need to engage, the objective to alchemise and create. Building an intensive, all analogue studio running to 1/4 & 2" tape, the majority of these recordings are the emotions and moods drawn from this detoxification. The widescream Rave Digger, horror-haus Lavid Grinch show a more expansive Cherrystones. The occult beats of Uhuru Glue lead to the anthem Amaziac, with it's organic AFX rising, before again down to future beats of Silver Soarde and closer, Sethodone Recess Plant. Review: A new philosophy as time enters a radical history of our evolution. Being and nothingness in one, creatures of habit, the angels of nature, we can herald a new humanity. Review: After the success of the 2 Late 4 Love EP, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotional Response with a double LP with a deeper perspective, experimenting in ambient and drone textures, lucid techno travails and acid interludes. Recorded between 1997 and 2017, the album was pieced together over the last six months after Roy's archives were first feared lost and then found. Approached by the label to release a follow up with something more introspective and personal, it was discovered that a recent move to a new studio had led to over 20 years of music being misplaced after it was believed they were mistakenly dropped at a local charity store. However, deep in a box of what were thought to be patch cables were in fact the decades worth of hard drives and here presented, is a sample of those lost recordings. The nature of the music is introspection, eschewing the acid beats and white noise for a personal encounter between man and machine. The orchestral opening of the title track gives way to the submarine beats, pulsing TB303 and gliding hats of Robinson College 10 to set the outlook to come. Even with the scattering A Dim And Distant Past waking lulled senses, the melodies and feel all lead to a pause and reflect rather than jump and shout.

This is continued with the haunting drives of Bounce Erec and Oriental X0X-Press; the twisted, warped jams of The Weber Traum Boat Pt.3, Ichi and Roland Corp Labs 05; and the beautiful, heartfelt odes in Sade Lost Theme, The Clock House Pt.2 and closer, Nemesis '01. The album's melodic nature hums and shines as CS (6x8) appears as much a centre piece as a alternative consideration to the acid tinged, club bangs of Roy's releases to date.

A surprise package maybe, but in the rolling, word of mouth phenomena that was Emotinium II, all this and more was sensed and so White Sunrise Music II, spreading across 12 songs of contrasting moods, is a further affirmation that there is something good and worthy of exploration.

Review: Emotional Response is delighted to present a special project, a collection of music from Bartosz Kruczynski, recorded for Selected Media and presented here as a time-piece of his continuing works. Initially known as one half of sample based project Ptaki (The Very Polish Cut Outs / Transatlantyk), Kruczynski first appeared for Emotional Response as The Phantom for the first series of Schleissen in 2015. Featuring two works of deep fourth world sounds, they highlighted a shift to more mellow, synthetic and hazy compositions.

His break out came, however, when he explored this sound further on his eponymous album Baltic Beat, for the acclaimed Growing Bin Records. This has been augmented with the recent club based music as one half of the wonderful Earth Trax (Rhythm Section International / Phonica Records) project.

Here though, Kruczynski returns to the ambient and ethereal - plus a touch of dub techno - to showcase his expansive collaborative work with Polish studio, TVP Culture. Given free artistic license, the 15 short form recordings included here were for programming, in the main, on modern Polish Art including the likes of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Miroslaw Balka and Tadeusz Kantor, as well as some international aspects for Enrico Prampolini, Ai Weiwei and Monica Bonvicini.

Taken from over 70 episodes the material included recollects imagery, video and memory to present a series of short vignettes that together create one whole. Minimal and hazy ambience (V, VII, VIII, XI, XII) envisages classic melodies and chords and is accompanied by further 'fourth world' pieces (I, II, III, VII, X) that present an oeuvre that is recognisably the music of Kruczynski, while remaining fresh and perfectly meditative.

A counter can be found in the atmospheric dub works (IV, IX, XIV) that hint at echo chamber environs to get infinitely lost in. As an album then, Selected Media can be heard as a snapshot to Kruczynski's music journey, a meeting of art and music that is oft overlooked but very much essential.

Review: DJ soFa is a smart choice of compiler - the Belgian DJ has just the kind of wayward music taste that marries up comfortably with Emotional Response's omnivorous curatorial style. The names are a mixture of familiar and obscure, but the quality remains high throughout this 12-track set. Tolouse Low Trax is on stunning form with "Sketches Of A Destroyed Meadow", while Claude De Tapol has a wonderfully hypnotic approach to motorik machine music on "Du Train Jaune". T-woc's wavey post-punk groove is brilliantly executed, and Lamusa II draws you deeper into transcendental headspaces. This is essential listening for any and all maverick sound explorers.

Review: As with the first SchleiBen series, Emotional Response follows the success of the second set of split releases with a stand-alone album by one of the highlights, in Neil Tolliday.

Recorded over a 17-year period, the ambient, drone and noise pieces collected here offer a glimpse in to the depth of a supremely talented, thoughtful and at times, troubled musical mind.

As his love for house music and the success of his Nail moniker grew and waned during the ascent 90s boom, there followed his somewhat surprising success as one half of Balearic-pop combo Bent, propelling Tolliday in to a world of indie-charts and endless touring. The eventual unhappiness of this 'music career' and increasing need for personal escapism led him start experiment new musical forms of expression.

A thinker and oft-over drinker, success was viewed with a deep suspicion and introspection, drug use and later, depression. As his other music projects slowly imploded, this new, personal music was for many years, made purely for Tolliday's own absorption and comedowns.

Taken from an initial 4 track recording in Nottingham in 2000, more pieces were subsequently recorded around the globe on numerous devices - old portable cassette recorders, hand held digital stereos and even mobile phones. These heavily manipulated samples were slowed down, reversed, smudged and stretched before analog and modular patching, Mellotron, editing, programming and post production were added to the melting pot.

With hundreds of tracks collated, in the last few years Tolliday began putting them out via Bandcamp using different aliases, on made up record labels, with no press or mention to anyone. This would happen every 6-9 months - a new label was created with logo, band/artist names and a few albums worth of music, leaving it there for a few weeks before then deleting the lot.

Here then is a snapshot of those recordings, chosen to represent the depth of music, while trying not to think too much about in to the emotions that were used in making them. With special hand painted artwork by Sam Purcell, commissioned from the artist's own photographs taken from a adjournment at Homerton hospital, the hope is to do justice to such wonderful music and present Neil Tolliday, finally an artist, shorn of pseudonyms, in a broader light.

Review: TKIL is a collaborative project between members of Georgia, E Ruscha V and more, that finds a home on Emotional Response following its gestation between New York and LA. As you might well expect, this is music for deep level explorers, veering between gorgeous, mellow refrains and gleefully madcap constructions loaded with inventive rhythms and off-kilter synth expressions. The freedom spilling out of this project is a marvel to behold, as disjointed psych-boogie collides with ethnographic studies conducted with extra terrestrial tools. Even at its wildest though, there's something undeniably 'chill' about TKIL that makes it sit surprisingly easy on the ears.

Review: The Schleissen series goes from strength to strength on Emotional Response, inviting another two esteemed luminaries in the field of ambience to indulge themselves on a long side of wax. Matthewdavid is a welcome addition to the series - the West Coast champion has been operating in all kinds of unusual realms for a long time - and he comes to this release with a new project entitled Mindflight. The resulting track "Sonos' loops and folds heavy washes of drone and feedback in a thoroughly stimulating bath of harmony. Firecracker affiliate HOLOVR meanwhile presents three different musings on the dynamics of vintage UK techno, all crooked beat formations and luscious synth strokes gazing into the future.

Review: The Schleissen series stands as one of the finest facets of the ever expanding Emotional Response empire, initially kicking off in 2015 with releases from artists such as Harmonious Thelonious, Abul Mogard, Don't DJ and Sad City. Now the series has been fired up once again with the exotic tones of Tomaga, recently found lurking round the likes of Meakusma and Hands In The Dark. It's an exotic live band sound that touches on Fourth world exploration and motorik drive, but certainly with its own unique slant. The following twos are handling by Neil Tolliday, most commonly found rolling out tech house as Nail and many other names, but here indulging in gorgeous, layered minimal ambient pieces with looping melodic phrases to soothe rather than groove.

Review: Out 2 is a project from Jeremy Campbell and R. Zanzibar, who have previously worked together on albums for L.I.E.S. and Lectric Sands under different aliases. They sound right at home on Emotional Response, channeling the influence of 1980s New York dancefloor hybridization into six original tracks and their counterpart dub versions. It's an impeccable tribute to the forefathers of new / no / minimal wave with the right kind of funk rubbed in the groove and ample space in the mix for all the live dubbing the style demands. "Moving" is a surefire death disco party starter, "Dancing" hovers in a beyond the grave island boogie reverie and "Some Air's Red There" heads out into exotically enhanced territory without losing that NYC grit. It's a marvelous record, with the dub versions adding new dimensions to the music rather than simply repeating the same tricks sans vocals.

Review: Out 2 are the product of a New York-based partnership between Jeremy Campbell and R. Zanzibar, who are just the kind of cult operators that Emotional Response so dearly love. With one foot in classic Talking Heads inspired funk variations and the other in the catch-all stylistic melee of the modern age, this is highly developed party music for well-read rug cutters to bust out shapes to. Just check the gorgeous synth violin styles on "Fire" or the heavy dub beatdown of "Rubber Hour" - these cats know what they're doing. All new-no-minimal-wave lovers take note!

Review: The fourth and final edition of SchleiBen is an extra special one, bringing forth acollaborative project between Colin Potter of Nurse With Wound fame, Not Waving artist Alessio Natalizia and Brain Machine's Guido Zen. Furthermore the series ties with Dusseldorf remain, as Osnabruck based producer Niklas Rehme-Schluter lines the flip with the beautiful ambient touches of his Cass project. The two part efforts from Potter, Natalizia and Zen offer a perfect marriage of methods, with percussion hinting at and Techno, while the constant Drone influx and disintegration grab your attention, overlapping with rhythmic repetition deeper and deeper. The Cass contributions see tracks from the German artist's cassette only Hiding Place album presented on vinyl for the first time and fit snugly into the sonic ethos explored over the previous SchleiBen releases.

Review: Emotional Response brings together two esteemed artists as they continue to celebrate five years of top-drawer releases. Alexis Georgopoulos and Jefre Cantu-Ledesma aren't necessarily household names, but their respective careers have touched on many a respected project in a variety of fields. Here, the pair turn in some wonderfully expressive compositions played out across all manner of organic instrumentation. The richness of the production and the highly developed ideas embedded within this gorgeous LP should resonate for a long time to come, not least because the pieces are all so easy on the ears. From Steely Dan precision to Balearic lilt, this is proper players music played by proper players.

Review: Sad City's debut album was an absolute delight to behold when it landed late last year, and this remix package on Emotional Response does a great service to the quality of the original by offering up some truly outstanding new versions from impeccable talent. DJ Nature is one of the greats of heads down, dusty house, and his smoky handling of "Steady Jam" draws you in across two blissful versions that adorn the A side. On the flip, "Pace, Movements I-IV" gets a beautifully bubbly acid treatment from HOLOVR, and Herron plunges "Rain" into a murky bath of leftfield techno.

Review: Brain Machine's Peaks LP was a highlight of the Emotional Response catalogue last year, and it's only right that the album gets a high-class set of remixes to accompany it. The label have pulled out the stops here with an all-star cast, leading in with Salon Des Amateurs dreamweaver Toulouse Low Trax who drops a pinging, plucking version of "Light Space". Then Gigi Masin steps up with an illustrious revision of "Crystal Clouds", while Harmonious Thelonious brings a heavy yet measured, techno-minded presence to "Traces". Ronny & Renzo round the package out with playful synth splashes on their version of "Eclipse Predictions".

Review: Emotional Response reach out to another fine selection of sonic voyagers to take Brain Machine's excellent Peaks LP to task, leading in with the warm discoid undulations of Rollmottle who refigures "To The Stars" as a gentle, groovy warm-up joint. Die Wilde Jagd takes on "Mercury Ripples" and fashion a bombastic breaks jam out of it, and Merrick Adams pushes "Alpha Moon" into a curious but ultimately cosmic space somewhere beyond the titular lunar body. Cass takes the prize with the bittersweet synth tones that course through the two-part remix of "Nexus Vox".

Review: Gary Caruth's Sad City project has progressively attracted ever more praise, not least since his Shapes In Formation album landed last year. Straddling purest ambient and abstract rhythmical electronica with a unique approach that is all his own, Caruth is returning to Emotional Rescue with a 10" that revisits three of the tracks from Shapes In Formation and magnifies them as the longer form versions they originally were. "Music Removed" was a particularly strong track on the album, and this new extended version lets the pneumatic percussion and soulful vocal croon bleed together in the most captivating of ways. "Patterns" sounds even more elegant in its pagan ambient finery with a longer run time, and "Vexillations" flits between poised static and cascading chimes with the deft touch that has come to define the Sad City sound.

Review: Emotional Response delivers a mini-album of ambient-equatorial enlightenment by Australia's mysterious Tropical Hi-Fi. The final record from an artist appearing on the label's SchleiBen series, this also points to the future. Based somewhere in the far flung Northern Territories, the music of Hi-Fi's pre-incarnation Electric Egypt was first discovered via the note-worthy airwaves of L.A's outstanding Dublab radio station. As the wonderfully diverse internet shows and project's dense, hip-hop inspired collages came to fruition with 2012's Exotica release, a dual awareness and sporadic contact was maintained whenever a signal could be established with Hi-Fi base camp. As the SchleiBen series was formed, the studio-DJ-cut-up-mix of Oceanic Mythology was warmly received as an inspired counterpoint to the dense offering from Don't DJ. These first real solo recordings from the Hi-Fi crew - whoever he/she/they maybe - moves on from the cut'n'paste of Electric Egypt to seek a meditative vision. Ambient, balearic and field recordings are all part of a drifting tropical flavour that encompasses the listener. Music truly inspired by it's surroundings, this is not some music journal, flying in to sample a life and it's sounds, but the real, living entity and it can be heard deep across the 8 short pieces. None is more typified than Tahiti Blue, where fellow traveller Mike Cooper layers his ubiquitous steel blues over simple, lilting drums. Enjoy.

Review: Having done such wonderful work alongside Wolf Muller on The Sound Of Glades album, Cass makes a welcome return with an expansive album release on Emotional Response. The German producer's ambient tendencies blossom here, occasionally meeting with laconic drums as on "U" but primarily dealing in huge swathes of melody. DJs will want to hold out for the dramatic pulse of "Ann", where a more pronounced drum set makes for one of the album's most club-ready moments. There's a strong variety of tones and moods across Youth Sessions, from the strafing arpeggios of "Running" to the bliss-out shapeless swirl of "Prismatic Prolog", and this ensures that the album will not dull with repeated listens.

Review: Golf Channel and Emotional Response embark on a mission to bring together two generations of Kraut excellence as Dunkelziffer's Dominik Von Senger collaborates with the Montezumas Rache pairing of Jan Schulte and Christian Pannenborg. As you'd expect, the resultant EP is rather fine. They set the tone with "Rheinfaren", where a low-slung, dubbed-out groove is complimenting by twinkling guitars, delay-laden Jew's harp parts, and other sun-kissed elements. "Tangerine (Krauter Mix)" doffs a cap to Tangerine Dream and Dunkelziffer, with tumbling guitars - some effected by a wah-wah pedal - and vintage synths combining to create an effortlessly Balearic mood. Closer "Guten Morgen Bromio" is a fuzzier affair, combining grooves and sounds reminiscent of Pink Floyd's Animals full-length with the out-there attitude of classic krautrock.

Review: Emotional Response returns to Dusseldorf with a compilation of the music emanating out of the Diskant label over some 7 EPs between 2009-2014. Featuring the productions of The Durian Brothers, Harmonious Thelonious and Don't DJ, their unique polyrhythmic percussive sound of the label is highlighted across this special double album. Legend goes it was discovering the first Diskant release on the wall of Honest Jons store back in 2009 that became a prime influences in the creation of Emotional Response. Born out of the early years of Salon Des Amateurs, the Diskant label was set up as a vehicle for the music and member's music of The Durian Brothers, namely Florian Meyer (Don't DJ), Stefan Schwander (Harmonious Thelonious) and Marc Matter. Coming together from their own music backgrounds to explore a new experimental polyrhythmic para-funk via distorted electronics. Using specially prepared turntables, hypnotic rhythmic patterns, noise and sequencing they have created a dense and fuzzy excess that over four sides of vinyl is here now presented as a retrospective, but not an end, to highlight their unique sound.

Review: Having issued a mini-album from Fuxa earlier this year, Stuart Leath's tireless Emotional Response welcomes the Detroit band back to the label with an album recorded alongside Neil Mackay of Loop fame. Apollo Soyuz was originally released digitally earlier this year via bandcamp, but you can see why Leath would want to license it for a proper vinyl edition. The eight tracks form an exploration of the outer cosmos that is tinged with a deep psychedelia that will resonate warmly with fans of Emotional Response. From the space funk of the opening "Apollo Soyuz", Fuxa and Mackay lead the listener through galactic kosmische, spatial ambience and primal tape loop experiments and more with "Testz 1" a considered highlight.

Review: Emotional Response open the Secret Circuit archives to some of Eddie Ruscha's contemporaries from the City of Angels for a fine exercise in how to do a remix 12". First up is Suzanne Kraft, aka Diego Herrera who forms one half of Blase along with Ruscha; in his hands the crazy afro-stylings of "Afrobotics" are pulled towards the dancefloor, adding percussion and sirens, forging the originals vibes in to a ethno-beat club jam that is all about that heads down moment. Next up The Samps turns "Shockers" into a warped mesh of psychedelic dance, whilst Superior Elevation's Tom Noble adds some killer boogie vibes to "Underdogs". Finally Sun Araw man Cameron Stallones appears under rare alter-ego Aristrocrat P. Child to re-edit "Roll" in superb fashion.

Review: Number three in the four part SchleiBen series from Emotional Response arrives with Don't DJ and Tropical Hi-Fi at the controls. The former is the current creative endeavour of Florian Meyer, founder of the Diskant label and one of the more experimental and academic producers to surface from Dusseldorf in recent times. He also forms one third of The Durian Brothers. Meyer's "Kosmose" is a 20 minute piece which explores the link between polyrhythmic percussion and brooding electronics; understandably, it's ripe with introspective qualities. Offering some contrast, Northern Australian producer Tropical Hi-fi turns in "Oceanic Mythology", a meandering journey through found sounds, psychedelia, folk music and more which sounds like listening to SUED B-sides whilst tripped out on acid.

Review: Emotional Response returns to the Schleissen series with another cross-European exploration of ambient minimalism, film sources, field recordings and fluid soundscapes to create an over-whelming album of beauty for the listener to simply let go and wash away to. This time the influences are softer, but still prevalent, with forbears Satie, Stockhausen, Reich, Cage, Russel, Cunningham, Toop and of course of Hassel and Eno all acknowledged and explored through structure and the gentle syncopation of melody or occasional rhythm. With a nod to the film works of Tangerine Dream (or is it Global Communcation?) The Phantom follows up his outstanding LP1 with a move further into the ethereal.

Review: Schleissen 1 marks the beginning of a major, four-part project from Stuart Leath's Emotional Response label; an in-depth exploration of the "outer reaches" of drone and ambient. It's a grand scheme, highlighted perfectly by the grandiose scale of Serbian maverick Abul Mogard's opener - a hypnotic, 19-minute exploration of modular drone music that's as freaky as it is beautiful. Stefan Schwander dons his now familiar Harmonious Thelonious alias on the flip, laying down two brilliantly melodious synthesizer pieces inspired by the cyclical compositions of acclaimed minimalist composer Steve Reich. Both pieces are borderline stunning, and more than worth the admission price.

Review: Alessio Natalizia's Human Capabilities album was one of the highlights of the label in 2014, so it seems only right to get four artists to create their own unique versions for this EP. Starting with Pye Corner Audio, Martin Jenkins delivers a pulsating remix while Valentina Magaletti (Shit & Shine) and Tom Relleen (The Oscillation) take the industrial loops of "Mathematical Man" and provide an improvised jam of drums, bass and percussion. L/F/D/M's remix of "Double Blind" strips things back to the core of the track, looping it incessantly for maximum intensity before far away melodies bring you back again. The EP closes with a wonderous remix from drone specialist Abul Mogard, who again is at his best, taking the melodic ambience of the original and modulating it in to a brooding and emotional remix.

Review: Stories of Prison sees Timothy J Fairplay returns to Emotional Response having helped shape the identity of the label in it's infancy with the release of Somebody, Somewhere back in 2012. A lot of music has come from both artist and label since then, with Fairplay's reputation as a solo artist fully established thanks to releases on a myriad of labels. Stories of Prison is a mini LP rich in the musical intensity Fairplay has instilled in all his music to date, yet there is a daring sense of diversity at play too. From the effervescent dubbed out house toughness of opening track "The Quay", Fairplay veers into subaquatic breakbeat, deep synth Love From Outer Space chuggers, and other late night sonic treats.

Review: William Burnett (Black Deer) returns to Emotional Response in remix form with reworks from Legowelt as Nacho Patrol, Luke Wyatt (aka Torn Hawk), Scottish artist Sad City and Oregon experimentalist Honey Owens under her Valet alias. Nacho Patrol's take of the ear pricking "Circle Dance" gives the track a house music make over, with its "Voodoo Ray" styled synths again give precedence. Luke Wyatt turns in an emotional and surfy, synth punk remix to "Meditation" that sounds like it could soundtrack a montage from the finale scenes of an '80s TV show for teenagers, while Sad City lets loose on the delay when remixing "Highway". And it's all open road, neon streaks of vapourware for Valet's reanimation of "Tortuga".

Review: When Juno Plus spoke to Emotional Response boss Stuart Leath recently, he talked excitedly about his latest time intensive project - trawling through boxes of old cassette recordings from L.A multi-instrumentalist Eddie "Secret Circuit" Ruscha to compile a follow-up to 2012's brilliant Tropical Psychedelics compilation. Predictably, the resulting collection is nothing short of brilliant. Typically eccentric, melodious, atmospheric and bristling with interesting ideas, Cosmic Vibrations delves deeper into Ruscha's archives and comes up with gold. Highlights are naturally plentiful, but keep an eye out for the psychedelic ambience of "Electric Brain", the analogue electronic explorations of "Nova Laser", and "Shockers", an acid-flecked chunk of chiming Balearic deep house with exotic, Arabic touches.
