Eskimo Recordings

Eskimo Recordings is a label based in Ghent, Belgium, and was founded in 2000. Eskimo has always approached the divide between electronic and indie music with a reckless abandon that suggests that there is no divide at all. A mix of Indie Dance / House / Cosmic & Balearic Disco / Nu Disco and more.

The label grew out of the eclectic parties that took place during the late nineties in the Eskimo Fabriek in Ghent. These underground parties got famous for mixing synthpop, new wave, acid house, funk and rock ‘n’ roll into a new and fresh sound, setting new standards for the Belgian club culture. International as well as local talented DJs such as Mo & Benoelie (later to be The Glimmers) and The Flying Dewale Brothers (later to become 2 Many DJs) were usual guests at the turntables. As the Eskimo Fabriek needed refurbishment at the turn of the century, the Eskimo parties moved on to the Culture Club, and the temporary Belmondo concept at the S.M.A.K museum.

However, the vibe of these parties kept going through a new label that was founded in 2000 by Stefaan Vandenberghe and Dirk De Ruyck: Eskimo Recordings. From the very start, timeless quality and originality were the key values upon which the label was based. Old and new music were carefully combined into a fancy fresh sound, with the releases bringing a wide array of mix compilations by established selectors and original music signed to Eskimo. Since 2012, the label is run by Stefaan Vandenberghe and Nadiem Shah, aka Captain E. The very same year 'Eskimonde', a luxurious 5CD box set, was released to celebrate the first decade. Over the years there have been landmark releases from Aeroplane, The Glimmers, Optimo, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas, Freeform Five, Satin Jackets, NTEIBINT, Psychemagik, Transistorcake, Aili and many more.

In 2013, Eskimo Recordings launched a new concept: The Colour Collections. These collections contain each a set of carefully selected songs that were all produced exclusively for this concept. Recent 'diggers' compilations were curated by musical authorities such as Prins Thomas, Psychemagik, Bill Brewster and Curses. Eskimo has helped break many of the names that have gone on to become electronic music’s best regarded performers, and holds a unique stake within the indie dance world.

Review: We were rather impressed by Horixon's last collaboration with Else Born - September 2017's ambient pop workout "Hello" - so hopes are naturally high for this belated follow-up. This time round, the duo has opted to move closer to sun-kissed Balearic disco-pop territory, with Born's atmospheric vocal sitting atop bouncy pianos, colourful electronics and an unfussy nu-disco groove. It's naturally a little stronger in the Extended Mix form (which, to be fair, is still only four and a half minutes long). Also impressive is the Dubka Diskomix, which replaces Born's vocals with an un-credited male equivalent while peppering a chugging, Italo-disco style groove with eyes-closed guitar and keytar solos. It's an impressively different and dancefloor-friendly revision all told.

Review: Chanteuse Niya Wells stars as German nu-disco don Tim Bernhardt once again slips on his Satin Jackets and gets "Lost In Japan". Wells is naturally in fine form on the title track, delivering strong and sultry vocals over a breezy and attractive blend of rich pianos, fluttering electronics, deep melodies and a huggable nu-disco groove. As ever with Bernhardt's work, the song is just as radio-friendly as it is dancefloor-focused. Speaking of which, some DJs may prefer the accompanying Dub revision, in which snippets of Wells' vocals drift across a deeper, echo-laden bed of Balearic disco goodness.

Review: Having played a key role in popularizing the productions of Scandolearic heavyweights Lindstrom and Prins Thomas early in their careers, Eskimo Recordings continues to champion young Norwegian producers. The latest is Cavego, who celebrates the imminent release of his fine debut album with a suitably solid new single. "Vertical Vind" is available in two flavour combinations. There's the sublime album mix (track two), which sees him build the tension via waves of attractive synthesizer lines before introducing woozy vocal harmonies, even more melodies and a chugging space-disco groove of the kind regularly featured on Prins Thomas's "Full Pupp" label, and the shorter "Kort Versjon". This dispenses with the stretched-out intro completely, instead getting straight to the point and the Bergen-based producer's rush-inducing synths.

Review: Norwegian nu-disco producer Cavego, AKA Even Hymer Gillebo, has previously appeared on labels like Youth Control and Get Dancy, and here makes his debut on Belgium's mighty Eskimo imprint with an EP named after the valley where his family have a summer cabin. After the 1:44 intro that is 'Velkomst', he serves up five cuts inspired as much by Italo disco as by the Scandi sounds for which his fellow countrymen have made Norway famous, ranging from the sumptuous synth-pop of 'Hajfell' and the very 80s-sounding 'Farvel' to the irrepressibly sunny 'Var I Ayer' and the tripped-out, chuggy 'Kjeiken'

Review: Parisian producer Simon Says has been doing his thing for nigh on two decades now, most recently via Dialect Recordings. Few of his previous releases, though, are quite as saucy and arresting as "Feel Me" - a killer dub-disco re-imagining of a lesser-known 1982 Blancmange album track rich in bubbling synthesizers, fuzzy bass guitar, whispered vocals and spacey synthesizer melodies. For those looking for a dose of extended pleasure, Bill Brewster's chugging re-edit - an eight-minute scalpel rearrangement of Simon Says' original - should scratch that itch. Elsewhere, fellow French producer Yuksek pushes up the tempo and gives the track a little more pulsating nu-disco flavour on two tasty revisions, while Eskimo regulars NTEIBINT cannily emphasizes Simon Says' flash-fried funk-rock guitars.

Review: Having featured on Eskimo Recordings' last two compilations Russian producer Antenna now steps up for his first full release for the label with the 5 track 'From Kazan With Love'. The whole EP is something of a spacey, languid and colourful delight, with the producer flitting between slo-mo nu-disco takes on Tangerine Dream ("Sparks"), pitched-down Balearic disco bliss ("Love 66", whose Rhodes solos and rubbery groove are particularly enticing) and crunchier, Clavinet-sporting deep electrofunk ("Take Me Home"). The package also boasts two collaborations with Tasma: the grandiose, post-Italo Euro-disco swoop of "Astra" and the cinematic strings and bustling, post-punk influenced drums and bass of closer "Waiting".

Review: With temperatures rising and the sun beginning to shine, Eskimo Recordings delivers a glistening chunk of Scandolearic disco goodness from up-and-coming Norwegian producer Cavego. "Var I Oyer", nominally a tribute to the artist's home city, was first featured on Eskimo's recent Purple Collection compilation. That original version - warm, sunny and sublime, with colourful synthesizer parts and freestyle vocals relaxing over beachside Balearic disco grooves - kicks off the EP and is also included in an even-more-gorgeous, DJ-friendly Extended Mix format. The EP also boasts short and longer "Club Mixes". These are Italo-disco influenced nu-disco bubblers laden with life-affirming synthesizer motifs; while very good, they're still not as luscious as the original mixes.

Review: German nu-disco duo Satin Jackets is back on Eskimo Recordings with a tasty collection of cuts from the vaults. The majority of the material on Diamonds Are Forever - save for a couple of unreleased exclusives and reworks - originally came out on various obscure compilations and EPs earlier in the decade. There's natural plenty to enjoy, from the swirling, sun-kissed dreaminess of opener "Latin Jackets" and the sparkling, loved-up synth-pop-goes-Balearic-house brilliance of "Hollywood", to the breezy, beach-friendly cheeriness of EP standout "How Long Can I Wait For You". The EP also offers a chance to own two sought-after Satin Jackets remixes, with their nu-disco/deep house fusion re-make of Novika's "Miss Mood" standing out.

Review: Since first joining the label in 2012, Blende has been one of Eskimo's standout artists, releasing a string of attractive Balearic disco workouts. Predictably, the London-based Swede has done it again with "Do You Remember", a shimmering, sunshine-friendly Italo disco-goes-Balearic pop workout complete with strong lead vocals from collaborator Mickael Karkousse. Skip the radio edit and head straight for the Extended Mix, a far more satisfying and life-affirming beast that uses positive chord progressions and druggy arpeggio lines to build energy before Karkousse's killer vocal drops in midway through. It's accompanied by a tasty instrumental mix that is, if anything, even more glassy-eyed and grandiose than its predecessor.

Review: Tunnelling and strobe-lit dancefloor drama with a touch of the exotic on "Take Ride To The Middle East", courtesy of Dutch indie dance duo SHMLSS - who have appeared for the likes of OYE, Nein and their own XXX imprint. The original was released as part of Eskimo Recordings' acclaimed compilation The Red Collection and has proven to be a perennial favourite with open minded DJs. The remix by Italian super duo Marvin & Guy gets even more atmospheric, with their rendition taking you on an esoteric journey even later into the night yet remaining respectful to the original.

Review: Eskimo Recordings' colour-coded compilation series has been running for a while now, serving up previously unheard cuts from the Belgian label's ever-growing family of artists. Typically, there's much to admire on The Purple Collection, the seventh annual instalment in the ongoing series. Highlights include the deliciously cosmic, slo-mo pulse of Atella's "Ascension", the horizontal Balearic disco shuffle of Antenna's "Sparks", the pitched-down, early Chicago house-meets-synth-pop flex of Dan Soloand Future Feelings' "What Else Can I Do" and the Aeroplane style nu-disco positivity of Cavego's "Var I Eyer". Elsewhere, you'll find more up-tempo, nu-disco-fired dancefloor excursions from Simple Symmetry, BOKA and Horixon, while a hugely enjoyable non-stop DJ mix of the selected tracks completes a fine package.

Review: Bergen boys Atella (Johannes Hallanger and Magnus Lauritzen) have previously been compared to fellow city dwellers Royksopp and Erot. On this latest outing for Eskimo Recordings, it's easy to see why. While dreamy, downtempo opener "Ascension" and equally horizontal closer "Transition" are far more ambient in tone than those celebrated artists, you'll still hear cheery synthesizer motifs and a glassy-eyed sense of mid-winter positivity. The EP's two other tracks, "Alive" and "Nothing", do sound more like vintage Telle Records gems, albeit with the kind of sparkling electronic polish you'd expect from Eskimo-released nu-disco cuts. The duo's vocals (see "Nothing" for a standout example) are very Royksopp, too.

NTEIBINT - "I Do" - (5:47) 120 BPM
Review: To kick-start their 2018 release programme, long-serving Belgian nu-disco imprint Eskimo has turned to an old friend: George "NTEIBNT" Bakalalos. While this appears to be his first single in some time, he's previously released a wealth of material on the label, often in cahoots with this single's guest vocalist, Stella. Her distinctive vocals take pride of place on "A State Nearby", a cheery chunk of gently bouncy nu-disco goodness rich in throbbing, Italo-disco style arpeggio bass, tactile piano riffs (think St Etienne's cover of Neil Young's "Only Love With Break Your Heart") and dreamy chords. Bakalakos opts for a warmer and groovier feel on bonus cut "I Do", creating feel-good vibes via the use of crunchy disco guitars, Balearic synthesizer motifs and dreamy vocal snippets.

Review: When Eskimo Recordings approached Bill Brewster with the idea of putting together a compilation exploring his epic record collection, the acclaimed journalist and DJ decided to take a widescreen approach. While the CD and vinyl versions are split into multiple, themed editions ("Post-Punk", "Balearic" and "House"), this vast, 41-track digital edition gathers everything together in one place. Predictably, it's a hugely impressive and eye-opening set, with Brewster serving up largely obscure or long-forgotten cuts that range in scope from trippy, dubbed-out post-punk disco, jaunty jazz-funk, synth-heavy boogie and heavily percussive Afro-disco grooves, to saucer-eyed European synth-pop, the dub techno of Maurizio, Swag's early UK tech-house and the East Midlands deep house bump of Charles Webster's "A Love From San Francisco" project. In other words, it's a cracker from start to finish.

Review: DJ, author, journalist and all-round font of musical knowledge Bill Brewster is the owner of a killer record collection, so it's little surprise to see that Eskimo Recordings has asked him to curate an epic compilation. Tribal Rites is appearing in three parts. While later instalments focus on house and Balearica, this first edition delves into the post-punk section of the veteran selector's collection. Predictably, Brewster's selections are not only on-point but, for the most part, suitably obscure. Check, for example, the stretched-out jazz-rock-with-spoken-word weirdness of Agape's "Rejoice", the humid dub trip of Urang Otan's "Walking in the Jungle", the thrillingly tongue-in-cheek electro-pop silliness of Ploff's "Mein Walkman is Kaput" and the blissful brilliance of Motion's dub-fired lounge jazz number "Crazy Beat". And that's just for starters. In other words, you need this in your life.

Review: Over recent years, former Correspondant producer Paresse has delivered a series of druggy, head-in-the-clouds EPs for Craig Bratley's impeccable Magic Feet imprint. The Sloth Machine EP is his first outing on Belgium's Eskimo Recordings and is arguably a little more Balearic-minded than some of his previous releases. Certainly, there's a sunrise-friendly freshness to melodious and breezy closer "Quiet Light" - think cascading synthesizer lines, drowsy, delay-laden guitars and unfussy beats - while 108 BPM opener "Sloth Machine" is as crystalline and shimmering as they come. We're also enjoying the locked-in shuffle of "Being Vain", where waves of late night synthesizer seemingly crash over a hypnotic groove, while "Temple" is a quietly psychedelic, left-of-centre chunk of cosmic disco goodness.

Review: 'Hello' is a cool, calm ambient track with melancholic piano chords which occasionally move into glimmers of hope, there's a stunning vocal from Else Born which makes this track unmissable. The 'NTEIBINT remix' has the twangs of Midwest country, almost bringing the vocal into the realms of ballad, before breaking down to a more familiar funky sound for the chorus, and for us is the standout of track of the EP. The 'Area dub mix' is instrumental and minimal; so serene it's almost meditative, absolutely beautiful. The EP also comes with the 'extended mix' and the 'instrumental' which do exactly what they say on the tin.

Northern Lights (Carl Louis remix) - (4:31) 111 BPM Hot
Review: Belgium's Eskimo label have long since been champions of retro electro-pop and house. Here Germany's Satin Jackets see their recent yacht rock hit Northern Lights remixed into sublime and dreamy pop-trance by Carl Louis. With the original's tougher edges now smoothed out, the song becomes something else, that something else being a slow motion widescreen Euro anthem, drenched in summery synth riffs and yearning vocals courtesy of David Harks who sounds uncannily like Jake Sheers in ballad mode. A fitting end of the summer epic.

Atella - "In The Days Of The Green" (45P mix) - (7:55) 111 BPM Hot
Review: Bergen-based twosome Atella has previously been praised for delivering music that draws inspiration from fellow Northern Norwegian artists of old, most notably Erot and Royksopp. We can certainly here some of the latter in the bubbly Scandolearic/synth-pop fusion of "Anyone Out There?", where Cal's breezy vocals wrap themselves around a throbbing, arpeggio bassline and glistening synthesizer melodies. There's a slightly more cosmic, but no less cheery, feel to the EP's other track, "In The Days of the Green (45P Mix)", which boasts extended synthesizer melodies rising above a dreamy nu-disco backing track. Quietly impressive stuff, all told.

Review: Blende is slowly becoming one of Eskimo's "go-to" artists. "Back To Summertime" is the cheery nu-disco/synth-pop fusionist's fourth single for the Belgian label since 2012. The track itself is something of a jaunty, synth-heavy summer shuffler, with Mattie Safer's attractive vocals rising above a bouncy, P-funk influenced backing track laden with kaleidoscopic melody lines. Arguably even better is the remix by This Soft Machine, which recasts the track as a rubbery chunk of sumptuous disco house complete with razor-sharp strings and life-affirming slap bass. To complete a rock solid package, Cavego weighs in with two reworks; a revivalist electrofunk "Extended Remix" and an "After Dinner" remix that re-wires the track as a blissful chunk of live-sounding Balearic disco.

Never Enough (CASSARA remix) - (7:27) 112 BPM Hot
Review: While relatively under-appreciated in the UK, Satin Jackets are one of Europe's most successful nu-disco outfits. The German duo impressed last year with their breezy debut album, Panorama Pacifico, which effortlessly joined the dots between nu-disco, Balearica and radio-friendly synth-pop. Here they return to Eskimo Recordings with a new chunk of sun-kissed goodness: the gentle warmth of 'Never Enough', where Niya Wells' ear-catching vocals ride a backing track rich with colourful synths, tumbling piano lines, crisp guitars and toasty electric bass. Fellow German producer Cassara provides the accompanying remix, smartly emphasizing the more organic elements of the duo's original productions to ensure a looser, classic disco feel.

Review: Few labels have championed nu-disco and Balearic synth-pop quite as much as Belgium's Eskimo Recordings. Here they unveil another softly spun autumnal treat: a sumptuous combination of debutant Else Born's hazy, evocative vocals, and a tactile backing track that cannily combines undulating drums, stretched-out chords, nu-disco synth bass and attractive Balearic flourishes. Los Angeles-based French duo Blue Hotel provide solid remix support, making the most of the Norwegian songstress's vocals on an atmospheric, mid-tempo, nu-Balearic rework, before stripping back the beats and layering up glistening guitar flourishes on the sublime Chill Mix. All three versions are wonderfully melodious and picturesque.

Atella - "Close To Life" - (4:54) 99 BPM Hot
Review: You'll know Belgium's Eskimo label better than you think. The imprint rose to fame thanks to the many productions of Italian nu-disco sensation Aeroplane, back in the late 00s, and they've never ceased to release quality electronic music from all corners of the spectrum. Newcomers Atella X Froder land this time, with the two collaborating on the slow, peaceful waves of "Closer To Life", a tune that sits somewhere on the halfway line between house and downtempo. Atella, alone, delivers another mix of the same tune, and this one is perhaps even deeper, a little smoother and probably more on the sort of balearic tip that you've been digging in those dusty L1 bins for. Just go digital with it.

Review: While Nteibint's "Hide In" is a fine slice of cheery, melodious nu-disco/synth-pop fusion, it's the accompanying remix package that makes this an essential purchase. Ewan Pearson, in particular, is in fine form, delivering vocal and instrumental versions that drag the track kicking and screaming towards the dancefloor. Both make excellent use of particularly psychedelic acid lines, sturdy beats, sharp violins and some killer disco cowbells. Both are little less than total overhauls, and testament to Pearson's quality as a producer. Zombies In Miami do a fine job on their remix, too, which sticks a little closer to Nteibint's original while ladling on the atmospheric chords.

Review: In case you wondered, Aussie-in-Berlin Timothy Sullivan's machine is definitely soft, though the music he makes is far from flaccid or floppy. "It's Operational" is, in fact, a rather fine trip into Italo-disco/acid house fusion, with early electro-style vocoder vocal lines and a dash of nu-disco sassiness thrown in. By Eskimo standards, it's pretty tough and intoxicating, but that's no bad thing. The CHIDA remix drags the track further towards shirts-off, camp-as-Christmas Italo-disco territory - in the process emphasizing the original's more obviously analogue elements - while Avalon Emerson chooses to re-calibrate "It's Operational" as a bustling chunk of raw tech-house intensity.

Review: Having previously released Orange, Blue, Green and Pink "collections", Eskimo Recordings continues its' colour-coordinated theme with a Yellow compilation. As usual, the collection draws on material from both established names and lesser-known talents, and does a bang-up job joining the dots between hazy Balearic pop, nu-disco, indie-dance and colourful, soft-focus house. While it's all of a high standard, we're particularly enjoying the sparkling dub disco-goes-Balearic flex of Satin Jackets' dub of Du Tonc's "We Can Hold On", the trippy analogue bump of Man Power's "Fisky", the splendid rush of Luxury's baggy disco groover "Breathe", and the camp, Italo-disco thrust of "El Wild" by the brilliantly named Zombies In Miami.

Review: Although they've never really broken through in the UK, Satin Jackets are one of the most successful nu-disco outfits in Europe. Feel Good, featuring the woozy vocal talents of Scavenger Hunt, was one of the standout cuts on their recent album, Panorama Pacifico. The dreamy, eyes-closed, Balearic pop vibe of the original version is hard to beat, but a trio of remixers steps up to have a go. Cavego goes first, delivering a near perfect blend of sun-kissed nu-disco bliss full of clipped guitars, dreamy pads and rolling, Balearic disco grooves. Kaljet reaches for the pianos on a bold and beautiful interpretation, before In Limbo slows things down on a drowsy, late night version that's as picturesque as a leisurely drive through the Black Forest at sunrise.
