Review: There's a certain hypnotism to minimal releases that grounds the listener in place and holds them with you, a magic to the repetition that's intangible but undeniable. Sparky has nailed that recipe here and across two tracks on Evolution UK, has crafted an enviable approach to rolling, inch-perfect drum & bass that doesn't have many frills but simply doesn't need them. 'Concrete Jungle' skips and hops in the drums, its bassline rising and falling across phrases with hypnotic consistency, a sense of monotony that's far from boring. The flipside is similar in purpose but variable in form, its bassline is less flowing and instead made up of subtle stabs that wave in the wind of a guttural sub bass. This is proper drum & bass.
Review: Evolution UK always deliver tough, urban-edged sonics that don't prance around or act fancy, they just get down and dirty. Sparrky has delivered exactly that here, with a two-track single of moody tones and no-nonsense drum lines. 'MKMO' is a perfect example of said drums, with impossibly clean hits and a clear sense of space and progression, its bass stabs are almost shadowed out. 'Glitch' is the most futuristic, with a deep back end and seriously cool synth spasms that lend it a techier feel than the other cuts on the EP. Wicked.
Review: With an onomatopoeic name taken from the drum sound we all know and love so much, Relative Concept touches down on Evolution UK for a seriously solid single that rests on harsh, guttural percussion and only goes up from there. The title track is the title track for a reason and so it's also our favourite, with a stripped back sense of progression which goes hand in hand with its barebones approach to low frequency construction. The flip is darker and grimier, with a twisting, gargled bass that bends into the drums and sounds wicked while it goes. Unreal.
