Review: Following its initial release in 2006, John Beltran's Human Engine LP enjoys a proper digital release on Exceptional to reach out to contemporary listeners with his pastoral shades of shoegazing electronica. There's a lot of ground covered, from the live drums and languid guitars of "A Mind Blows Everyday" to the New Age techno chimes of "That Day In Monterey", but the constant remains Beltran's knack for ethereal atmospherics. There are some more energetic moments, such as the synth-pop leaning "Here & Now", while the many shorter vignettes broaden the palette of the record, but this is essentially a collection for those that like to recline.
Review: The latest single to be lifted from Clouds 'Hokarangen Space Program Strings' album, and one of the finest moments on it. A captivating blend of cosmic audio landscapes and progressive undertones in which the quality lay in the simplicity. The Original is built around a gently evolving string which takes centre stage in the arrangement and mix, while the other sounds subtly wash around. It's the remix which picks up the pace and chop things up a bit in terms of bringing genres together as Throwing Snow brings a unique flavour of rock and a slight edge of dubstep. Completing the package is another new track 'Untitled' that will transport the listener to a Far Eastern temple.
Review: Comprising of Alastair Dawson and Gavin Whyte, Nursery of Naughtiness mix together a heady brew of early hardcore, breakbeat and techno lunacy on this latest single. "00" is definitely influenced by dubstep, but its ravey synths and jungle-breaks drums make it transcend into a space all of its own - definitely not one for the faint-hearted! Equally in-yer-face flipside "Future" is more of a heavy-hitting breaks tune that incorporates some fierce wobble-leads as well as tense, chewy textures and hard-hitting drums.
Review: Dark and menacing breakbeat from Nursery of Naughtiness, released by hard hitters Exceptional Records. Heavy beats crash through distorted synths as Phorse MC unleashes a tirade of angry and threatening vocals. The package includes an extended mix plus a remix by breaks maestro, Run Riot.
