Review: London based Ted Jasper returns to the Fat! label with some world music infused and hip-hop influenced deep house, that showcases an immense vision within the studio. From the emotive and bittersweet "Mali Mali" with its African vocal samples, the tabla driven and bass heavy euphoria of "The Drum" to the dreamy Bristolian (think Julio Bashmore!) deep house vibes of "Buried" (extended mix) with its clever St. Germain samples: it altogether proves Jasper certainly is one to watch in 2018! Established in 1997, The legendary Fat! Club encompasses a record label, club night, blog, and a management company and booking agency.

Review: As one would expect, the Fat! label never like to hold back when it comes to compilations - they like to go all-out and rightfully leave the diet option to others. We're talking bass here, and lots of it; moreover, the Breaks Vol.1 comp provides all shades of the stuff, mostly filtered through percussive lens. In this leviathan, you'll find tunes by the likes of Merka, who absolutely destroys the place with a gunshot of beats and electro-charged bass, or Boabinga and his new strains of pseudo-jungle, and even Peacemaker's funkier shade of breakbeat. That's just to give you a snapshot because, in all honesty, this is one to be enjoyed in its entirety. Go forth and download the lot!

Review: What we love about the Fat! label is its ability to shine bright in whichever domain it likes to delve into. On top of that, it also never seems to disappoint in terms of scouting out new talent from across the electronic stratosphere. Ted Jasper is a newcomer to the scene, but the producer is clearly able to deliver the goods from the get-go, and this four-tracker sounds like it was made by a producer with quite a few years of experience behind them. We like to think of its as electronic pop, especially on the opening "Little Bit More", thereafter transforming into something more of an r&b experiment. James Blake is someone who this guy has much in common with, but Jasper's tunes are perhaps even more far-reaching in their ideas and influences.

Review: Newbies Boney & Joel Edwards pack a mean punch in the house sound with this debut EP for the prodigious Fat! imprint. "Call Me" is a jazz-leaning, party-guaranteed house bomb that has everything from sleek saxophone to deep, luscious chords spewing from all angles. There's an artillery of remixers, who all contribute with different shades of house. Sonny Wharton goes for a drum-heavy rework, whilst the uniquely-framed TrAmHeD offers both jazzy and more hip-hop minded versions with his pair of remixes. This all leaves Fiefdom to deliver what is possibly the best and most singular house version on this EP, a buzzing warehouse tune with an electro feel.

Review: After two debut releases last year for Chasing Unicorns and Love & Other respectively, Howson's Groove is back in 2015 with yet more sleek and punchy house music; this time for Fat! The title track "Stand Up" is a classic Ibiza kinda joint boasting the occasional break for good UK measure, whereas "Turn Me" is a funky Detroit house groove surrounded by swamped vocal chops and a swinging percussion flex. Smart tools for the soulful DJ.

Review: Fat! Have compiled a collection of Foamo tracks which can only really be described as bangers. "Jookie" sounds like Jesse Rose's "Touch My Horn" on steroids, while "Sherlock" is what you could call 'filthy'. There's housier vibes on "Vibrations" and tear out dub on "Corridor" and for some bouncing Euro heat check out "Ocean Drive". Remix-wise "Sherlock" gets the full treatment of four reworks, with My Nu Leng breaking down the dirtiness of the original. Lather yourself in Foamo.

Review: Fat! Records spent all of January under the duvet - not a bad idea really when you know that you've got a blinder all lined up to go. Light As A Feather is the debut release by Austrian producer Alaev, and it's a seductive hazy slice of jazzy downtempo soul-pop with luxuriant vocals by Julia Biel (winner of 'Perrier Vocalist of the Year 2000' no less). Sony signing SoulCircuit deliver a fizzy electro house version and there's a lightheaded mix from Amateur Dance and a warped neo-soul one from Joe Hertz too.

Something - (6:16) 120 BPM
Frills - (6:19) 124 BPM Hot
Review: In a very short space of time MORRT has developed an impeccable reputation for classical house flavours so strong, you're unsure what decade you're in. This Fat! outing is no exception, with "Something" a Fred Everything-style swinger, all jazzy chords and echoed vocal snippets. "Frills" is a more spacious chugger. Understated with full focus on the relentless drums and a teasing organ hook that disappears as quickly as it flies into the mix, it's yet another late night strut-athon from the young UK artist.

High School - (5:01) 123 BPM
Review: Wants are a Polish duo with a deep-rooted love of bass-obsessed UK house and techno. Here, they present their first single for Paul Arnold's long-running Fat! imprint. Opener "Track" sets the tone, delivering a late night assault of booming, undulating sub-bass, shuffling tech-house rhythms, pitched-down hip-hop vocal samples, dub techno-influenced chords and locked-in, late night atmospherics. Flip to the virtual B for "High School", a swinging fusion of throbbing sub, metallic percussion, wobbling chords and spooky, early morning textures. Fittingly, it also features a restless cymbal line that does much to propel the track forwards.

Sunny & Share
Sunny & Share - (7:25) 122 BPM
Review: Ten Story's, erm, story is rather fascinating. The Bournemouth duo bagged a residency at Ibiza Rocks in 2013 on the back of their debut EP for Extended Play Recordings. After another season on the White Isle, they're back in Blighty and aiming to restart their production career. "Sunny & Share" - their first single for Paul Arnold's Fat! Recordings - is a tactile tech-house roller, with woozy chords, freestyle vocal samples and tight drum machine handclaps flitting in and out of the mix. Throw in some dreamy pads, a notable breakdown, a chunky bassline and a strobe-friendly build-up, and you've got a tried-and-tested, dancefloor-friendly chugger.

On the label's latest release, De Contrebande and Development join efforts to produce three, bass-heavy tech scorchers for your shaking pleasure. "Tell 'Em Like It Is" contains one of the tastiest basslines we've heard in yonks, and the same goes for "Die Tryin'", where the duo blend bass and house into perfect unity. Review: In less than a year, London twosome Catchment has gone from little-known bedroom producers to in-demand remixers, famed for their celebratory and floor-friendly take on bass music. Here, they deliver their first EP for Paul Arnold's label, Fat! All three tracks revolve around gargantuan, speaker-shaking basslines. There's a cut-up garage feel to opener "Go In", while "Jockey" sees them venture further into rave territory via old skool stabs and bouncy, Belgian-influenced riffs. Finally, there's a little light at the end of the tunnel in the shape of "Timeline", a bassline-heavy bouncer with zipping, ricocheting melodies and trippy vocal samples.

Resonant - (6:12) 126 BPM
Review: Drawing on a vast range of influences, Bejewelled tries and largely succeeds in being all things to all men. The title track is a jacking affair that features the plink plonk of xylophone bells, while on a completely different tack, "Don't Look" is led by a stepping rhythm and a rude UK garage sub-bass. "I'm Tired" uses a similar approach, but on that occasion, the bassy licks are fused with an angelic vocal, ponderous techno chords and a series of rewinds. Rounding off this unusual release is "Resonant", a stripped back techno groove that features the sound of rattling percussion and killer subs.

Review: It's always a sign of a label's vision when it can stay both ever-relevant and true to its original ethos. Although the transition of Fat! from cheeky breaks label to filthy bass peddlers might seem a giant leap; in practice they've always made each new release feel like a natural progression. Here it's all about the messy late hours, with "SSL Soundtrack" being a slice of deep, mid tempo vintage gurn-funk. "Tourniquet" is nastier still: electro-house with lashings of extra bottom end, suspended strings and a skippy UKF beat. Class.

Kry Wolf drop the tempo slightly for a resonant UKG strut, Taiki & Nulight continue the garage vibe with a more uptempo, menacing bass motif, Millions Like Us add some cinematic breakbeats and shivering synth washes to the mix, My Nu Leng take a leaf out of Bassbin Twin's booty-bass book while LKid calms us down with a very neat, early 90s house version. Review: Pale is a young Manchester producer who by day goes by the less exotic moniker of Leo Marcus. The exoticisms stay in the music though, with "Catacombs" being a widescreen vision of a thing that begins with deep beats before expanding into a multi-layered, glacial soundscape. "Oak Music' features an intense, pulsating techno bassline wrapped in ghostly chimes, before the pace mellows with the downtempo funk of "Orchidea".

Roland Garros - (5:28) 117 BPM
Review: Paul Arnold's Fat! label has come a long way since its days as an outlet for shamelessly cheeky breakbeat records. These days, Arnold and his crack team of A&R monkeys seem to be focusing more on the sort of hazy late night tracks that fuse contemporary bass music with classic house. That's certainly the case with this two-tracker from mysterious upstarts Wolf Club. "Desverre" sounds like classic US garage given a UK funky twist - all Todd Edwards style cut-up vocals, treacle-thick organs and skippy percussion. "Roland Garros" takes a similar retro-futurist approach, delivering intoxicating vocal builds, touchy-feely riffs and pleasingly deep atmospherics.

Three cuts in total, each one drives a different bass machine but they're all set at full throttle. The lead cut "Heavy" takes the best elements of acid house and speed garage, mixes them together and gives them such a good shooing they'll still sound fresh in 2093. "Think" follows; armed with a warbling sine and some cacophonous percussion it's an instant dancefloor mindbender. "Don't Stop" completes the package, and does so on a persistent Afro swing with some fine-tuned high riffery atop.

Fille - (4:37)
Damn Social - (3:19) Hot
Review: Pale brings a new angle to the much-explored post-dubstep landscape with three deep, experimental tunes, which traverse genres but manage to maintain a clear identity. The eponymous track of the EP is all delicate, skittish beats and swooning melodies dancing in a sparse, stripped back soundscape. Next, "Fille" is all twinkling SFX and stuttering beats with snippets of vocal coming in and out of focus, with a curious and disorientating effect. "Damn Social", the concluding track, works minimalism to a new level with sparse beats and a humming drone in the background and distorted synths adding to the discord.

Vibrations (original mix) - (5:11) 131 BPM Hot
Review: The second instalment of Foamo's space Summer Series, "Vibrations" once again sees the Fat! resident blur the lines in a thrilling way. A mix of 2-step beats, 90s house organs, old-skool drum hits and garagey vocals, "Vibrations" is a true heavyweight that proves just how versatile and genre-bending Foamo can be. Perfect for fans of all strains of house music.

Review: Having previously teamed up on releases for Southern Fried, tropical house twosome Malente and Jay Robinson join forces once again with much-missed MCs Yo Majesty on the mic for this big, big tune. With a marching band rhythm and urgent soca stabs locked into a bouncy groove, the YM ladies tear it up and add an inimitable swagger to this future classic. With a host of brilliant remixes also included, highlights include Botnek's insanely warped yet infectious treatment and Raffertie's tight eski-garage reworking.

Review: With big thumbs up already from DJ Zinc, Foamo, DJ Yoda and Lee Mortimer among others, this huge new carnival raver from TLGB is destined to be a bit of a player coming into summer. With a filtered horn sample ushering a torrent of scratched beats, Bmore claps, tropical samples and dubstep-esque squelches, it's a beautifully jumbled blizzard. There's a handy dub included for DJs, while brothers in bass Tomb Crew and Marlow each deliver killer mixes. Also check out another TLGB newie - the sine-wave riding "Warehouse Bird".
