Meet The Fauna
Review: Primitive kosmische electronics all the way from St. Petersburg via Edinburgh label Firecracker! Evocative of a score for imaginary protoplasmic oceans, surreal, sepia-tinged space operas and Russian sci-fi folk tales, Meet The Fauna, they say, is as much of a cheeky nod to The Residents and Coil (or even Haroumi Hosono and John Hassell) as it is to the likes of B12, Black Dog, Richard H Kirk. For us it all begins and ends with "Alteration", this record's opening track that gets as close as anyone has to that epic "You're Not Alone" feeling. Experience cinematic shades of new age ambient pop in "A Sense Of Meaning" with tougher drums and basslines thundering down in "Access". Always floating, there's higher tempos in "Erasing River" and a touch of space rock in "Union Shift". Home listening gold.

Review: Having come to bear arms through labels like Meakusma, Palto Falts and Emotion Response, Georgia have transpired to be a Chinatown dwelling duo outta New York. Their music represents an arty, synthy, DIY and experimental take on tropical rhythms, subtle industrial-tronics and percussion music with playful, abstract melodies. This record for the legendary Firecracker Recordings comes with an almighty stamp of approval from label boss and exotica auteur Lindsay Todd, lifting a premium of tracks from Georgia's archive to set apart a sound as heard on the two other LPs the duo released this year via Ekster and Berlin label M?tron. Pattern Transform
Review: Gavin Sutherland aka Fudge Fingas is back under a new alias for Edinburgh based house oddballs Firecracker. A long known staple of the Scottish imprint, they themselves seem equally as perplexed as we are- but we can all agree that it's certainly not altogether unpleasant. Boss man Lindsay Todd describes it as 'occupying the space between alien-revisited exotica, classic jacking house workouts and a BoC 'Chromakey Dreamcoat' kinda vibe'. From the swirling and hypnotic esoterica of "Descent Into Nasqueron" to the brooding journey into the abyss that is "Chapel Perilous Closed". Then comes the EP's most accessible track "Late Feeling Yourself", a smoky, sexed-up, late-night deep house jam that calls to mind his usual work or that by label staple Linkwood.

Expressions Remixes Pt 1
Review: For the first in a series of reinterpretations of material from Linkwood's superb Expressions album, Firecracker Recordings has turned to deep house veterans Ghosts of the Sky (AKA Chicagodeep and Taelue), and fast-rising machine abusers Nummer. The latter trot off on an aquatic techno tip, turning the becalmed and melancholic "Love Lost" into a techno-tempo stroll through vintage Carl Craig chords, sweaty machine percussion, and yearning melodies. There's a warmer and heavier, if surprisingly stripped back, feel to Ghosts of the Sky's version of "Object", with spluttering electronics and sumptuous chords stretching out over a rich synth bassline and hissing, cymbal-heavy groove.

Shevchenko 2
Review: Sparklingly brilliant return for Vakula on the Firecracker affiliated Shevchenko label, seemingly founded to give the Ukrainian the space to fill his creative impulses. Again referencing the cultural heritage of his homeland, with a hand stamped quote from foremost Ukrainian poet Leysa Ukrainka, Vakula's first release in a minute begins with the aptly titled "You Cannot Resist". Heavy jacking rhythms combine superbly with guttural filtered tones and are countered by the rising crescendo of glistening piano touches and far reaching pads across the opening few moments. However, as with seemingly every production from Vakula, the ease with which he travels through various sonic moods within the space of a track simply captivates. Flipside and there's so much detail to the ecstatic rhythmic pulses of "Rural Dances" it's hard to decide what to focus on - perhaps the most immediately satisfying aspect being the bleeping melodies that sound like R2D2 high on MDMA.

Review: Les Gracies are a French-American duo comprised of Eric Douglas Porter (Afrikan Sciences) and Gael Segalen (IhearU). According to Scottish imprint Firecracker "their music explodes the boundaries and reunites from segmented forms.. from recognisable concrete elements of everyday life to a unifying abstraction, improvisations, mutations, polyrhythmic and hypnotic groove". So strap yourself in for these seven transcendental and life affirming tribal journeys on offer here. These are jagged and off-kilter offerings through the more difficult end of listening, as heard on oddball workouts like "Symetric Relatives" or "The Entry Dance" Then there are interesting moments of Calypso cum industrial slo-mo techno ("Pan") or Andy Stott style knackered house jams like "Compoly". Ending with the quite compelling sound collage that is the title track. In in all a tremendous effort and highly recommended.

UNTHANK006
Review: Firecracker Recordings' Unthank label has been a decidedly intermittent concern since it's eye catching arrival back in 2010 with the Parris Mitchell mangling antics of Berlin dwelling Estonian producer Bakey USTL. It makes for somewhat poetic reading that the label's sixth release should usher in the return of a producer whose last apparent production credit was a contribution to the Fudge Fingas cut "Fidgety Friends" way back in 2007! Quite what the West Yorkshire based Denaji has been doing in the subsequent years is not clear, but your focus should be on his contributions here, with the Wuhti EP quite sublime. The title track and "Dharma Dharma" are the sort of star gazing boogie and fizzing deep house that fit snugly into the overarching Firecracker sonic canon and do check the wondrous remix of "Wuhti" from Norwegian Sex Tags mastermind DJ Sotofett.

Unthank 9
Review: Firecracker's impeccable UNTHANK series continues, with boss man Lindsay Todd securing a first collaborative EP from Lemme Kno, a surprise hook-up between Maxmillion Dunbar and Rush Hour 'No Label' alumnus Morgan 'DJ Isle O'Man' Buckley. "The Tie With The Most Stripes" provides an excellent opening, with the duo exploring their shared love of instrumental hip-hop, Luke Vibert and sparkling dancefloor electronics. "Way (188 Krew Mix)" continues in a similar vein (think vintage Kenny Dope-style Jeep beats and samples meets lo-fi synths), before they reach for the jugular on standout cut "1234567". Built around early hardcore style breakbeats, loved-up chord sweeps, new age synthesizers and bleep melodies, the track harnesses both the musical zeitgeist, and each producer's distinctive talents.

The 780's Chronicles
Review: Firecracker boss and screen-printing don Lindsay Todd keeps looking far and wide for inspiration. Here, he's scratched beneath the surface to deliver a fine EP of skewed tropical synth-funk from Naples-raised, Mystic Tribe affiliate Fillipo Colonna Romano ALA Modula. Coming on like Prince jamming with Paul Simpson, Daniel Baldelli and fellow Italian synthesizer lovers Nu Guinea, the five tracks ripple with ricocheting, delay-laden drum hits, squeezable synth bass lines, humid electric guitars and the kind of kaleidoscopic synth solos that are capable of making grown men (and women, for that matter) go weak at the knees. It's a hugely vibrant, colourful and attractive affair that's undoubtedly amongst the best things Firecracker have released this year - and that's saying something.

Expressions Remixes Pt 2
Review: When commissioning remixes, the best labels think outside the box. That's exactly what Firecracker's Lindsay Todd did when seeking out producers to rework tracks from Linkwood's excellent Expressions album. On this second EP in an ongoing series, that faith has paid dividends. Whereas the original version of "Ignorance Is Bliss" was a warm, woozy, sun-kissed deep house affair, Healing Force Project has reinvented it as a stargazing chunk of 21st century space jazz, complete with twinkling chords, low-slung double bass and reverb-laden drum solos. The Musephased interpretation of "Love Lost" by Area sticks closer to the ultra-deep, melancholic vibe of Linkwood's original, but adds a frisson of excitement via bubbling, Detroit-influenced electronics and hypnotic rhythms.

Parabolas Of Neon
Review: Following the release of his acclaimed debut album, In Waves, on ESP Institute, Lord of the Isles man Neil McDonald returns home to Firecracker Recordings. With six tracks to choose from, Parabolas of Neon is almost a mini-album. It boasts a quartet of sublime, mind-soothing ambient cuts, topped and tailed by two more rhythmic moments. Opener "Sunrise 89", a shameless dose of nostalgia built around heavy, bleep techno style sub bass and electronic motifs, offers a perfect balance between dancefloor heaviness and dreamy, saucer-eyed intent. Then there's the small matter of the title track, which is the kind of ultra-deep, ultra-dreamy chugger that you just want to hug at six in the morning.

Gravitational Lensing EP
Review: It's always been tricky predicting what Firecracker Recordings will release next, though few would have expected an EP of freestyle, darkside drum machine jazz from Berceuse Heroique, Nous and Bedouin regular Healing Force Project. Sounding like early 23 Skidoo replayed on drum machines and samplers, there's much to admire about the hectic rhythms, foreboding textures and dusty samples at the heart of Gravitational Lensing. It's all pretty out there, paranoid and intense, with the fizzing drums, mangled horns and metallic percussion hits of "Random Walks" just edging out the experimental jungle-jazz madness of "Apophenia" in the "top tracks" stakes. It might take a few plays to really sink in, but there's no doubt it's worth the effort.

Shevchenko 6
Review: Firecracker offshoot Shevchenko has put out some of the finest house records over the years thanks to the inspiring work of Vakula. This time, however, "No Music" favours a more techno-leaning approach than usual. Swarms of industrial scratches are engulfed into a psychedelic arrangement packed with enough crunches to make your jaw wobble! Then, the aptly named "Vermona" pays a clear homage to the power of analogue beat arrangement and we're back into more familiar territories as smooth chords and effect-driven rhythms glide over the track. "Hand Made Beat" sees Vakula excel his capabilities and creates an intricate network of sloppy beats and ghostly melodies which grow and then dissolve with ease. A great addition to an already scintillating catalogue. Tip!

FIREC008
Review: Here is another Firecracker which has been kindly made available on digital and it's as pretty much as you'd expect... Regardless, enlisting long term Juno favourites Vakula and Juju & Jordash to remix Fudge Fingas is always going to be a strong look. The object of their prowess is "Mass X", taken from What Works, Fingas' 2010 debut for the Edinburgh imprint and the original's chiming sea calm gets reworked into two differing but complementary dub house gems. The Ukrainian - no stranger to remixing Fudge for Fire - calls shotgun with a wonderfully dusty house number filled with the kind of brain melting touches we've come to demand from Vakula. In contrast Amsterdam dwellers Juju & Jordash go uber deep, continuing their recent strand of immersive and expansive remixes that feel so soft you want to bury yourself in them.

Shevchenko 3
Review: Shevchenko is making the third helping of productions from the Ukrainian now availabel on digital. This release follows the upward trajectory of Shevchenko to date, as our impressions of Mama Said Glow were surpassed by the quite recent SHEV002. "Dub As Always" is typically unique, beginning like a bastardized East European cousin to Felix Da Housecat's "Kick Drum" before drafting in huge waves of burning synths. Vocals echo around our senses, falling to the depths before rising and shooting in different directions as the track throbs away at your brain. Vakula indulges in some scratchy, abrasions on "Track 2" which makes for the kind of production those with little studio know how will sit through and wallow in a state of confusion as to how he made it. As ever, it's hard to compare anyone else to what Vakula is doing right now.

Modern Species
Review: Danish producer Milan Zaks has largely impressed since releasing his first cassette of dusty, rave-influenced downtempo grooves last year. Modern Species, his first outing for Firecracker Recordings, is easily his most expansive and impressive release to date. Stretched out across two slabs of wax you'll find dreamy, jungle-influenced deepness ("World A", "For Real For You"), cosmic dub ("Stellar Clusters", "Ascension"), spacey ambient techno ('Entry Mode"), Motor City influenced positivity ("Parallax") and Boards of Canada style loveliness ("Reluctant Memory"). Predictably, it's all superbly produced, with the material proudly sitting in the no man's land between club-ready rollers and horizontal home listening fare.

Shevchenko 7
Review: Following his prime edit material for Cole Medina's American Standard label, Scottish producer Lord Of The Isles has seen original productions land on the likes of Cocktail d'Amore, Ene, and his own Little Strong as well as gracing the Phonica Special Edition Series. Now he arrives on Firecracker's Shevchenko edition for the label's seventh release, with three tracks representing the many shades and hues of his production palette. "Elgol" sees the producer venture into similarly impressionistic house territory as Legowelt, with nebulous organ chords joined by loosely jacking drums and gentle acid textures. On the flip, "Galicia" delivers a deep jam with all the same free-flowing analogue tendrils and luscious bass, while "Timber Lorries Emerging" combines a bassline with a John Carpenter-inspired tension with neo-Balearic soul, a combination that works a lot better in practice than you'd expect. As with all Shevchecnko releases clear vinyl and exceptional music is the order of the day - highly recommended.

Trace Realm EP
Review: Here's a pleasant surprise! Jimmy Billingham bringing his distinct brand of drawn out, emotive acid as HOLOVR to the good ship Firecracker. HOLOVR has largely been restricted to the digital or cassette format, yet 2015's Line Of Flight LP for Billingham's own Indole label proved what we always thought; it's music you want to hear booming out of a pair of turntables in a club! The Trace Realm EP, another thing of visual beauty thanks to House of Traps, continues in this vein with opening track "Transient Field" a real highlight along with the spoken word-blessed lysergic drift of closing track "Corporeal Crust (Cthelll Core)".

Unthank 10
Review: Firecracker sub label Unthank is back with Whodamammy aka Raffaele Arcella, an Italian DJ and producer based in Naples. He's related to the collective Early Sounds Recordings (with local hero Massimo Di Lena) and is one of the founders of Periodica Records. The music on offer on the Prima Industria EP is is a fusion between cosmic sounds, proto house, jazz funk and electronica. After the sublime intro that is "Iris Primum" get gets straight down to business on the oddball acid of "Indigo Auctoritas" and a couple of short experimental pieces which make for curious listening. But it's all about the following tracks in our opinion, where the intergalactic space funk of "Wise Glaciem" made a nice impression, as did the rather Hieroglyphic Being sounding analogue soul of "Neuter Gyrum".

Mac-Talla Nan Creag
Various
Review: Firecracker Recordings continue its wonderful music collection with Mac Talla Nan Creag the end result of several artists affiliated with the Edinburgh label spending some time in the Scottish highlands recording with traditional instruments, hardware and no small amount of Whisky! Lord Of The Isles, Other Lands, House Of Traps and local Edinburgh folk artist Wounded Knee are involved in one form or other throughout this illuminating 15 track collection. "NM 8222 0270" and 'NO 6594 9300' are lush ambient works reminiscent of Pete Namlook, whilst "Thrun' is droney feedback in the same vein as Rrose's recent LP for Further. "Forever played" and "Grugaigian Chant" are the perfect culmination of folk and electronics that this album can offer. All in all brilliant compilation that pays homage to the country's traditional music yet presenting in a modern electronic format. Highly recommended!

Review: It would be fair to say that Firecracker offshoot Unthank is a little underrated. The 10" series, which variously focuses on experimental deep house and curious downtempo explorations, has previously showcased superb work from Vakula, Inkswel, Booshank and Lord of the Isles, amongst others. Here, Vancouver's LNRDCRY gets in on the act, opening with a wondrous chunk of horizontal ambience - think dreamy, new age chords, throbbing bass and far-out textures - before delivering a suitably saucer-eyed slice of beatless positivity. The dancefloor's not completely ignored, of course, and the EP's final missive is an intense romp through analogue acid blessed, of course, with LNRDCRY's usual impeccably atmospheric chords.

Review: Firecracker offshoot Unthank returns with a keenly awaited seventh release that introduces Texan producer Fur into the fold. It's the first credited release for the American producer (real name Bryce Isbell) since his Cocoon EP for the UNO label last year - this coming from a producer who according to his Facebook page has "released over 50 albums" on multiple formats. It's an impressive Unthank debut for Fur which sees weighty pianos and deep house rhythmics match the sounds of a harmonious DJ Sprinkles production. Firecracker's Linkwood bolsters the EP with his Stargazer remix, which replaces heavily struck keys with new age synths, while the loose swing of the original's drums have been tightened to create a linear, but laid back reinterpretation.

Everyone Is A Door

Review: Rome-based Panoram is something of a mystery. Very little is known about him, and he's hardly prolific - in fact, this debut album is only his second release, after 2012's acclaimed (and now devilishly hard to find) Accents 12" on Scenario. The mystery is heightened by his scattergun approach to music-making; Everyone is a Door's 10 tracks variously take in warm, jazz-flecked analogue pop, Eric Satie style piano movements, quirky ambience, Boards of Canada-ish IDM and decidedly cosmic synth wig-outs. Throughout, there's an off-kilter, soft focus feel to proceedings that's never less than thrillingly atmospheric. Everyone is a Door, then, is an impressive debut album; expect to hear more from the mysterious Roman in coming years.

You've Never Been To Konotop (Selected Works 2009-2012)
Review: First announced over 15 months ago, Firecracker finally come through with You've Never Been To Konotop (Selected Works 2009-2012) a rather finely presented collection of tracks from the self styled 'Slavic Spiritual Warrior" Vakula. The main recording alias of Ukrainian Mikhaylo Vityk, Vakula first emerged in 2009 with a succession of singular deep house explorations for respected hubs such as Dekmantel, Ethereal Sounds, 3rd Strike and Firecracker offshoot Shevchenko an as the extended title suggests this album focuses on unreleased material from this same period. Musically, the tone mirrors Vityk's material for Shevchenko, taking the mainframe of house and melding it with elements of "Ukrainian folk melodies, esoteric cryptic rhythm patterns, field recordings, interludes and overgrown organic effects hidden beneath acres of cosmic murk."

Review: The good ship Juno traverses the Firecracker galaxy and lands once more in the spacious Unthank region with more down under cross genre pollinations. Last year's Inskwel induction was a noted highlight in the small but perfectly formed Unthank catalogue, but this fifth edition from the unheralded Booshank might just match it. Loose gargling acid of the deranged kind characterises lead track "Single Dutch" whilst on the flip "Interstate" has that psychedelic, cosmic vibe that Max D does so well. Booshank's disregard for kick drum politics is demonstrated with aplomb on "Secret Life" a simmering concoction of bristling textures which explodes into a charge of drums with the kind of glee that's almost sexual.

"Do It" is catchy and crisp with lovely mid 80s synthpop vibes, "Tu Machito" is pure old skool electro and "LFO Bounce" is a fantastic b-boy drum box workout. Review: After stellar contributions to the series from Bakey USTL and Vakula, Unthank swings back into action with a release from a producer much closer to their Edinburgh home, Lord Of The Isles. This Scottish producer has already graced some fine imprints such as Tusk Wax, Ene and American Standard with his music, while perhaps reserving the best so far to the excellent Hot Blobs EP released on his own Little Strong label. His contribution to the still fledgling Unthank canon improves on that release however, arriving in typically attractive cover art and described as "a journey of whiskey, analogue electronics, Scottish landscapes, nostalgia and underground parties". Musically the five tracks peak and dip between the differing emotions inherent in house music and sound as good as anything Firecracker have released to date.

Review: Ukrainian producer par excellence Vakula maintains his label hopping endeavours with this utterly essential drop on the newly minted Shevchenko label. Named in honour of the Ukrainian cultural icon Taras (as opposed to the one time free scoring forward Andrei) and rumoured to be closely affiliated with the Firecracker imprint upon which Vakula first came to our attention, it's a stellar first release that gives further credence to the growing opinion Vakula can do no wrong. "Mama Said Go Slow" is typical Vakula, twisting through various analogue passages, the few constants being the gloopy subaqueous rhythms that occupy the nether regions along with what might just be a sample from one of Muhammed Al Fayed's favourite musicians and the hissing oscillations of percussion. The next track sees Vakula indulge in some smudged out beatdown business on "Deaf World (Dub)" which draws you on a kaleidoscopic journey to the lower echelons of hypnotic, fluttering house music. Obvious sonic references to Detroit pervade the track but it's indelibly marked with the graceful Eastern European touch of Vakula. It proves to be a subtler yet equally potent example of the producer's lack of interest in traditional house music structures. Hopefully Vakula will continue to release music of this standard long after we run out of superlatives.

Unthank EP 2
Review: Having launched in fine style with the crazed Moodymann meets Dance Mania genius of Bakey USTL, Firecracker's Unthank offshoot keeps the focus squarely on Eastern Europe with some equally fine productions from a more celebrated entity. If this year is going to be dedicated to anyone, Ukraine's favourite son must surely be on the list - treating our ears and your hips to a veritable bounty of expert releases on numerous labels of high repute - Dekmantel, 3rd Strike and Ethereal Sounds to name but three. Anyone who has indulged in just one of the aforementioned releases should need no prompting to check this ten inch - with Vakula drawing on a surfeit of influences such as AFX, Claro Intelecto and DBX across the three untitled tracks. The A Side is where the deepness lies whilst the flip contains an expansive deviation into subaqueous, stripped down, hypnotic minimalism. Don't be expecting "A Tender Place" Mk2 but do expect to be seriously impressed.

What Works
Review: Gavin Sutherland aka Fudge Fingas is the man behind the seventh missive for the peerless Firecracker imprint, with "What Works" showing a move away from the soulful strains of his recent long player for Prime Numbers and towards moody, shuffling Detroit house. It seems fitting that remix duties are handed to Vakula - it was Firecracker after all who first showcased the Ukrainian producer's sounds to a wider audience - and despite his prolific form in recent times, his appearance here still feels very special indeed. Unsurprisingly, he turns in a memorable, highly atmospheric remix of "What Works", before another Fudge original, the chiming sea of calm that is "Mass X", rounds off an essential release.
