Review: Ruby Wood hails from Huddersfield in West Yorkshire, studied jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and is best known as the vocalist for Submotion Orchestra. She does also work as a solo artist, though, as this new five-track EP for London-based hip-hop, soul and jazz label First Word ably demonstrates. Mellow neo-soul/R&B with hints of both jazz and hip-hop is the order of the day generally, with Ms Wood's mellifluous vox obviously front and centre - though she's not afraid to share the stage with others, namely fellow Leeds vocalist Isaac Malibu, who guests on 'Mr Unavailable', and her own baby daughter Amber, whose coos and gurgles grace 'Me And My Girl'.

Review: 'Broken beat' is a pretty broad spectrum but whatever style you're into, Melbourne-based Allysha Joy has you covered. 'Still Dreaming' (as remixed by Shy One) has a garage-y, Donna Dee-ish kinda feel, while Risa T's rerub of 'Calling You' takes us closer to soul-jazz territory. 'Fatima' (remixed by Emmavie) then has more of a downtempo, melancholy pop feel, while finally for those who demand only the most out-there, cutting-edge rhythms, the haunting, fractured jazz of 'Let It!' (remixed by Rebecca Vasmant) should do the trick. Interesting stuff all round, with 'Still Dreaming' the pick to these ears.

Review: Contemporary jazz label outta the UK, First Word, brings us a compilation highlighting a select group of artists, groups and collaborations the label has works with and supports, taking in broken beat, hip hop, jazz and R&B to spoken word and soul. Highlights from its UK roster include tracks by Darkhouse Family, Kaidi Tatham and Sarah Williams White to a streak of US artists in 14KT (and that Tall Black Guy remix) to Muhsinah, Stro Elliot & James Poyser. Special mentions go to Melbourne songstress Allysha Joy, New Zealand jazz drummer Myele Manzanza and Japanese trumpeter Takuya Kuroda! Review: Trumpeter and composer Takuya Kuroda outta Brooklyn, New York (via Kobe, Japan), makes his way to First Word Records. Known for his session work and work with American vocalist Jos? James, Kuroda has garnered his own reputation within the NYC jazz scene for his unique and hybrid sound of soulful jazz, funk, post-bop, fusion and hip hop. A recognised artist on legendary label Blue Note also, Fly Moon Die Soon presents Kuroda's sixth studio album that the artist himself describes as an expression between 'irony', 'nature' and 'the beautiful obscenities of humanity.' Find uplifting, body moving ragtime, beatdown and funk tracks in "TKBK" to the live lounge numbers in "Change (feat Corey King)" to this LP's legendary title track with its sweet Asiatic notation and R&B flavours.
