Work Wid Me
Work Wid Me - (5:35) 126 BPM Hot
Joy - (4:21) 125 BPM
Review: You may already be familiar with mysterious producer GHSTGHSTGHST from his Grime edits and remixes over the past 12 months, but on "Work Wid Me" he presents us with a, well.. 'Unholy' mixture of grime, UK funky, techno and deep house which is perfect to haunt out early morning dancefloors in city basements. "Joy" is the most energetic offering on here, that still keeps the spooky vibe (a bit) but definitely more uplifting with its wonky bassline and swing fueled rhythm getting some right hands in the air moments.

BDP - (4:46) 128 BPM
Review: Callum Watson arrived with a bang on the UK bass scene in 2013 at the tender age of 20. Now he's all grown up like, and it shows. His new EP, Lux, is indeed a luxurious treat for connoisseurs of the finest bass music known to man. There are four serious workouts here, beginning with the title track's eerie opening gambit, "TriFi", features a fuzzy bass bounce, stomping percussion and a beautifully evocative breakdown, whilst after all that emotion WATSN straightens his shoulders for the hard as nails, hip-hop sampling "Dis". Finally the paranoia beat of "BDP" sees indecipherable chatter masked by serpentine rhythms and edge of your seat drums patterns. Safe!

Fatality/The Edge
Fatality - (4:33) 128 BPM Hot
The Edge - (4:20) 126 BPM
Review: Midlands bass duo, Hybrid Theory, were only recently up in the dock on trial for their murderously killer low-end frequencies. Seems that they must have got off on a technicality as they are already back out and ready to offend again. This new split single features two typically uncompromising productions. "Fatality" features knife-sharp hi-hats, buzz saw bass and positively lethal drops a plenty. "The Edge" meanwhile boasts skippy breakbeats, merciless bass bounce and even some string samples just to shake things up a little.

Under My Skin
Under My Skin - (4:48) 128 BPM
Rush - (4:15) 124 BPM
Go - (5:28) 130 BPM Hot
Review: Nu Era are a duo from the West Midlands intent on toppling Bristol's bas crown by championed in a 'new era' of bass music. So far they've been doing a good job about it, particularly with their jams on Four40. "Under My Skin" sees them reunited with the label, bring fire over the course of three new tracks. The title track opens the EP with some minimal 4 x 4 action, whilst "Rush" brings the ghetto bounce to the party and "Go" with its huge snare build ups and mercilessly low bottom end is a peak time monster if ever there was one.

Sound Of Our Soul (Mad Villains remix) - (5:51) 123 BPM
Sound Of Our Soul (Fish remix) - (5:13) 130 BPM
Review: South Royston are a UK duo who have already released on labels like Ministry and MadTech. They've been working on a new collaboration with the mighty Skapes and "Sound Of Our Soul" has been hyped on Lowsteppa's Rinse FM show. Now we get a chance to own this beast of a tune, all rolling low-end rumbles, hissy hi-hats and skippy drums, ourselves. Remix-wise Golf Clap up the toughness for a stern garage thumper, Mad Villains get deep and soulful for their stoner mix and Fish delivers the most interesting mix here - a leftfield ghetto jam with brooding carnival rhythms.

Review: Established during UKG/deep house's latest halcyon era in 2011, Four40 have navigated the bass, house and garage landscape with understated charm, forward-thinking fusions and occasions splashes of gully for five years, amassing well over 70 releases in the process. To celebrate they're put together this immense 54 track collection that represents the label's many sounds and successes. From Regality's deep Chicago inspired chugger "Celebrate" to Morcee's subtle speed garage swag "It's You", Hybrid Theory's atonal bass grunts and happy slap snares on "Mind Games" and Tom Shorterz subverted soul on "Wot U Do", Four40 cover all bass bases and provide an opportunity to fill any holes in your collection. War Food - (5:48) 128 BPM
Girl - (6:11) 128 BPM
Hear This - (6:20) 128 BPM Hot
Review: It's 2016 and DJ Darko is just getting started on his quest to rule the garage charts, and give us some much needed dust-percussion that we very much need in our lives. Last time we saw him he was in deep house mode on Bullet Train, but this time he's up on the sublime Four40 with three nuggets of pure UK dance music for the underground masses. "War Food" is a bass-driven monster with a mutant edge, while "Girl" gives a nod to the early 2000's, and that whole early Hotflush sound. Last but not least, "Hear This" goes all swollen on the low-ends, and manages to wrap hazardous level of sub bass around a flexible, garage-driven groove.

Review: Prodigal producer Jamie George may venture far and wide, but he always returns home to the ever-receptive Four40. "Searching" is an immediately infectious deep pop-step nugget surrounded by a deliciously druggy haze. Our faves of the many accompanying remixes include Albzzy's bass heavy VIP mix and Stripped Bare's very literal sparse house rework.

Review: Ahadadream recently dropped the hymn-like urban anthem Pray For You, which showcased the light and ethereal vocals of Olivia Louise and some observational MC'ing from Scrufizzer. Review: The man like PurpleVelvetCurtains takes off where he left us on F2 earlier this year with three more deliciously funky two-step serenades. "You Heavy" sasses with spacious drums and breezy keys, setting the foundations for the much darker, mischievous scuttle-bass "I Need You", but the real highlight here is "Brown Sugar"; fusing jazzy keys with a lolloping, housier rhythm and a series of waspy bass tones. Sweet.

Review: We've often thought that there's something in the air down Bristol way, how else does the city produce so many top bass producers? Notion is not just one of many though, this Bristolian is a master of UKG influenced bangers with his own unique twist. A hysterical cacophony of pitched up and down vocals samples crown the skippy, wobbly-heavy title track. Elsewhere "Drowzy" is slinky 4x4 with some killer warped bass and "Crooklyn" samples Crooklyn Dodgers for a merciless digital dub slammer.

Review: Hyperdub casuals and UKG dons Funkystepz return to Four40 with two new bangers, both of them straight from the gutter and ready to be served out on the Funktion One. The title track "Pirate Material" takes a garage groove and drops a hefty load of wobble bass on top of it, along with a seriously bruising percussion swing - a certified killer! "Copyright" is more of a house churner, still twisted and peppered in the Funkystepz's usual UK flavour. Four40 have come through with yet another pair of lethal weapons, check em'!

Rioja - (4:55) 122 BPM Hot
Review: It's about time someone did a bass/wine pairing session... And it's down to rising Birmingham tech monster Toni to show us how it's done. With its silky tech finish, juicy low end and ability to fit into house, bass and tech sets, "Merlot" genuinely live up to its name; smooth, fruity and versatile. The same comparisons can be made with "Rioja" without being tenuous, too... Its classic garage vocal chops give it that classic oak aged vibe while its melting pot of genres (garage, bass, house, tech) can be likened to the wine's reputation for many subtle flavours. Wine and grind!

Review: Newcomer Tom Akin makes his debut and on the excellent Four40 imprint out of Birmingham, one of the remaining UK strongholds for all things bass. "Worm" is a solid house stepper complete with an itchy percussion flex and cinematic sonics in its underbelly, but it's "Greize" that turned us on to Akin when we heard this EP. It's a slow-building, utterly stripped and lo-fi techno nugget for the early morn'. Production quality is solid, this dude will be back soon, no doubt.

They're not just any old tracks of course: both feature sleek, tough muscular production and are tailor made for making dancefloors move. With a dark-but-not-dangerous UKG silky finish, it belies its militant title and offers something that lends itself well to a much wider audience beyond the front row murkers. Tightly sprung in unreleased cuts and dubs, it's sharp-tailored document of where 130 bass music is at in the UK right now. From the lean groaning two-step shuffles of Hybrid Theory's "Tempering" via the warehouse-battering tubular bass and twisted vocal flexes of Adjected Deleted & Scullious's "Enemy" via the murderous grumblings and bounce-bass badness of Fogg & The Bumpy Fool, Kilner's so on point right now he sleeps on a bed of nails. Trove - (4:00) 128 BPM
Review: Callum Watson makes his Four40 debut with this dynamic trio of bass-laced UKG treats. The cleverly titled (especially considering his young age) "Sines Of Aging" is straight out the My Nu Leng / Mak & Pasteman playbook - a dark groove, a hooky bassline and beats so crunchy they could be endorsed by Walkers. "No Games" lives up to its name as a no-messing, heavy-hitting bass house hurter. Finally "Trove" switches the 4/4 for a sweetly skippy two-step rhythm and a more drone-like tubular bass sounds. The real treasure in this particular "Trove", however, is the beautiful chord structure on the breakdown. Bountiful.

Review: There's no stopping Midlands bass duo Hybrid Theory right now, what with their Four40 label putting out its first artist compilation and yet another big club anthem in the shape of "That's What It Is". What it is, is a scalpel-sharp trap-hop jam with heavy bass and undertones of grime courtesy of some spitfire MCing by Trilla. There's also some different edits and an instrumental included, with the "Heavy Radio Edit" which is anxiously sparse and riddled with the shrill delivery of Lady Leshurr.

War Cry - (4:37) 129 BPM
Review: There's throbbing bass aplenty on the menu when Paul Lawrence and Andy Garrett get together with this EP for Four40, which finds the pair fusing techno atmospherics with rude garage styles to create a potent floor-filling blend. "Apocalypse" works around a snappy breakbeat pattern which buffets along the heavy-wobbling b-lines, while "Fire" is a more devoutly swung and shuffling stepper to inspire a wealth of uptempo gyrating, aided and abetted by choice vocal licks and tripped-out breakdown sections. There's no let up for "War Cry" either with its own blend of tight drums and gut-busting low end honed for the hottest part of the night.

Review: Cameron Jenkison and John Neenan aka South Royston are steadily making their way to the top of the garage game. The Southampton duo drop their first EP on the irritably on-point Four40 and as expected, it's a doozy. "Another Night" starts all floaty and pad-rich but quickly drops into a funky, militant 4/4 beat for the peak time hours. "Bad Format" goes even nastier thanks to a chopped up vocal sample that twists and turns over those silky, fast-paced garage kicks and hats. Bombs, the lot of em!

Review: The UK's Billy Kenny makes his debut on the always-on-point, Four40! Kenny is a pure garage wizard, with a sound that could seriously rip up the floor. "Call You Back" features one of those basslines which you can leave on loop for hours, allowing it to seduce you into its incessant rhythm, providing a tune for the late-night hours that you can mix in with just about anything. "Work" is similarly funky and loaded with bone-shaking low-end, except this time Mr.Kenny is in an even nastier mood. Fire!

Review: Coventry's Suck Fake most recent release, the Can't Leave EP generated much hype, even hitting top our very own Bass/UK Garage charts. Now he's back to bring more heat with Four40 with pal Daniel Brooks in tow. The summer vibes are all over this single, none more so than on the carnival-centric "Coconut" with its lilting steel drum riffs, throbbing sub frequencies and skippy garage beats. Brooks sticks around for the similarly tropically tinged funky roller "Movin", before Suck Fake delivers the thoroughly nasty solo doom-houser (and our fave) "Ravin".

Review: It's been ages since we've had the pleasure of hearing any new productions from Funkystepz. Last summer was the last time the airwaves rocked to their uniquely scintillating productions, but now we have this four tracker. The sleazy late night roller "Kings Cross" kicks things off in fine style, before we get into deep agitated UKF territory on "Bump X", "Boyz In Da Hood" goes nasty with infectious claps and harsh mechanical squeals and lastly "Twister" provides a twisted on ravey piano house with added tech shuffle.

Review: For their latest release, the Midlands' finest, Four40, have secured a bit of an anthem courtesy of label stalwarts Pete Graham and Chris Lorenzo. Recruiting the geezerish vocal tones of another label veteran Jamie George, "Let Me Down" is an insanely catchy deep houser based around a repetitive dubby guitar lick and George's infectious naive melody. In other words, a hit. Elsewhere Nu Era go for bouncy big room wobble while JD Reid goes in the opposite delivering a mega slow T(rip) & B late night jam.

Review: Birmingham's Four40 have done it again. This time however, it's a compilation affair, featuring their most interesting artists. As per usual, the sounds are sparse and varied, held together only by their potent low-ends which really burst through on proper systems. Juno favourites Cloaka and Killjoy make an appearance, but there's plenty of quality from all corners of the throng. Suck Fake's "Dumbell" is particularly gnarly but the whole lot is bound to cause quite the stir in the old dancehall. It's a UK ting...

Review: With their influences ranging from chart-baiting house music to skippy garage and deeper moods, Nu Era stride forth on their debut single for Four40 as representatives of the West Midlands scene. "Give It All" screams crossover appeal with its canny mix of vocals, strings and chords precision placed for maximum ear-worming, while the "Bass Mix" brings a much ruder underground twist on the track. "Came Into My Life" rides a more electro influenced beat but keeps the cheerful melodic elements and chipmunk vocal slices present and correct, leaving it to "Source" to bring a techno edge to proceedings with its nasty synth line and strict 4/4 jack.

Review: Having introduced himself via a remix on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood, Alex makes his first full debut on Four40. Two cuts of heady house/garage fusion, both coated in well executed vocals, if you're into the likes of Black Butter, Woz, My Nu Leng or Mak & Pasteman, you'll be all over the simple-but-effective deep bass gurgles of "No Good" and melancholy, minor key soul of "How I Feel". With a dub mix and instrumental thrown in for good measure, this is a very accomplished debut.

Review: Now we all know very that there's only one kind of work that's any good, and it's not the kind that finds us sullen faced on public transport every morning. Here Decibel teams up with Slick Don to reiterate this universal truth via the medium of pounding peak time ghetto-ton, coming across like Oxide & Neutrino's effervescent younger siblings in the process. The remixes continue to up the rump/bounce ratio with Hybrid Theory's wobble-heavy 4 x 4 remix being the hard to beat Goliath amongst these heroic Davids.

Drop That Ass - (4:37)
Review: Big, booty-shaking bass squelches that seem to seep out the walls and crisp, retro claps announce the arrival of this year's hottest house party-starter. Jacking and jerking with the arrogant strut of Birmingham's bright new stars, this release is gritty and filthy enough to satisfy the most underground of dance addicts, while keeping a severe line when it comes to on-point dancefloor etiquette for those with more clean-cut style. The even more stylish "Drop That Ass" with its perforating dancehall beat and mercenary-dark synths turn nightmarish atmosphere into something well worth staying until closing time for.

Review: We don't know much about Nu Era but their beats and low-end for Four40 sure do sound bumping - "Just As Long" is a sweeter-than-sweet garage number that's reminiscent of Joy Orbison's housier work. "With Me" is denser and more broken up, with an artillery of dicing percussion and a poignant swell of robust basslines emanating from all angles, whereas "Carelessness" drops another hefty garage package with a fine rotation of female vocals on the loop. Class.

They Love - (6:45)
Review: Coventry upstart Ryan McCarthy has been making his presence felt on the UK bass music scene with a sharp twist on house music that keeps its finger well and truly on the contemporary pulse of low-end testing 4/4 groove. This latest offering for Four40 Records makes all the right moves for mutually assured club destruction, throwing a snappy vocal hook on top of subby bass swells while the beat moves with a restrained intensity even as the garage swing takes hold. "Why You Messing" sports more of a New Jersey groove over which the full-bodied elements take hold, from pitched up vocals to live drum triplets that widen the straight-up beat. "Fuck 'Um Deep" manages a crafty blend of ghetto house and minimal techno in the vein of Marc Houle, not least defined in the snaking arpeggio that rises and falls through the centre of the track, leaving it to "They Love" to whip out a Chicago inspired heads-down jack-fest of the highest order.

Review: Tomb Crew step into the limelight with their aggressively funky strain of house music on Four40 - a label most vividly known for their veritably UK approach. Title track, "The Sermon" is classic mashup of the highest calibre, with grizzly Jamaican vocals all-round and one belter of a bassline - watch the radio edit for an ever bumpier mixdown! "Wack Flues" is an instrumental of the same track, whilst Crown Duels put in a fine performance of the original - nutty low-end - along with Famous Emo and his grimed-out version and finally, Lucent's own vision - a monstrous, bass-driven squelcher! Hold tight, Serocee and Rubi Dan on the vocals!

The newfound interest in the deeper side of things is kept up on "How We Go Down" which features buzzing low bass and tough house beats. "Keep Dark" is sultry speed garage, the sparse "Conscious" veers into 4 x 4 territory and ""Show Ya" wraps things up with a warped rave organ riff and some very late night UKF grooves.
