Review: Established during UKG/deep house's latest halcyon era in 2011, Four40 have navigated the bass, house and garage landscape with understated charm, forward-thinking fusions and occasions splashes of gully for five years, amassing well over 70 releases in the process. To celebrate they're put together this immense 54 track collection that represents the label's many sounds and successes. From Regality's deep Chicago inspired chugger "Celebrate" to Morcee's subtle speed garage swag "It's You", Hybrid Theory's atonal bass grunts and happy slap snares on "Mind Games" and Tom Shorterz subverted soul on "Wot U Do", Four40 cover all bass bases and provide an opportunity to fill any holes in your collection. Review: Birmingham's Four40 have done it again. This time however, it's a compilation affair, featuring their most interesting artists. As per usual, the sounds are sparse and varied, held together only by their potent low-ends which really burst through on proper systems. Juno favourites Cloaka and Killjoy make an appearance, but there's plenty of quality from all corners of the throng. Suck Fake's "Dumbell" is particularly gnarly but the whole lot is bound to cause quite the stir in the old dancehall. It's a UK ting...

Skanks (Enigma Dubz remix) - (4:39)
Review: It's bashment o'clock round Decibel towers judging by the sound of his new bomb, and the currently on fire Newcastle producer doesn't appear to be mellowing any time soon. It's all about the party here on "Skanks", mercilessly so, especially with the legendary grime MC Flowdan on vocal duties - there won't be a dancefloor left alive after this incendiary fusion of footwork, tropical and hysterical rave is dropped. Just in the (unlikely) case it doesn't rock your world, there are two extra mixes supplied - Hybrid Theory deliver a slower, wobble-heavy housey version, while the Enigma Dubz mix defiantly keeps the classic dubstep sound alive!

Review: Despite the name, there's no goofing around with the dark and intense productions of Holy Goof. His latest three tracker kicks off with the menacing "Anyone", which cleverly fuses 4x4, hip-house and a dancehall/bass riff. Elsewhere we get the accelerated wobbly slammer "Cheatin'" and the bottom-heavy skipper, "Different".

Review: We've often thought that there's something in the air down Bristol way, how else does the city produce so many top bass producers? Notion is not just one of many though, this Bristolian is a master of UKG influenced bangers with his own unique twist. A hysterical cacophony of pitched up and down vocals samples crown the skippy, wobbly-heavy title track. Elsewhere "Drowzy" is slinky 4x4 with some killer warped bass and "Crooklyn" samples Crooklyn Dodgers for a merciless digital dub slammer.

Under My Skin - (4:48) 128 BPM
Rush - (4:15) 124 BPM
Go - (5:28) 130 BPM Hot
Review: Nu Era are a duo from the West Midlands intent on toppling Bristol's bas crown by championed in a 'new era' of bass music. So far they've been doing a good job about it, particularly with their jams on Four40. "Under My Skin" sees them reunited with the label, bring fire over the course of three new tracks. The title track opens the EP with some minimal 4 x 4 action, whilst "Rush" brings the ghetto bounce to the party and "Go" with its huge snare build ups and mercilessly low bottom end is a peak time monster if ever there was one.

Review: As always, it's a real pleasure to see the likes of Four40 hit back with yet another awesome compilation project. Over the years we have been treated to some absolute gems from these guys, a trend which continues as Kastle unveils his specially selected 'Get Right inside' compilation, complete with a full studio mix of the tracks involved. We look through the tracklisting on this one to find awesome pieces from the likes of Exit99, Opus, Duncan Powell and many more high profile names. For us the standouts of this project have to include the high energy collaboration between Jammz & Roska entitled 'Energy & Stamina', along with Witchdoctor's groovy spectacular in 'From The inside'.

Review: The UK's Billy Kenny makes his debut on the always-on-point, Four40! Kenny is a pure garage wizard, with a sound that could seriously rip up the floor. "Call You Back" features one of those basslines which you can leave on loop for hours, allowing it to seduce you into its incessant rhythm, providing a tune for the late-night hours that you can mix in with just about anything. "Work" is similarly funky and loaded with bone-shaking low-end, except this time Mr.Kenny is in an even nastier mood. Fire!

Review: Veteran UK producer EL-B had taken a sabbatical from garage, but has recently set about producing a 21st century take on the style. Hooking up with likeminded Birmingham label 40Forty, we now have the Attitude EP in our proverbial hands. The EP boasts four bleeding edge cuts, the first of which, "What you Mean To Me" riffs heavily on the classic 2-step sound with diva style vocals. Elsewhere, "Erase My Mind" is thumping, raw underground garage, "Down With The Programme' is a soulful, choppy, leftfield cut and "Attitude" is a upbeat party joint that samples Colonel Abrahams!

Review: Northern darkstepper Kilner steps up to curate the second Four40 compendium, and he's looted the most exclusive of vaults to create a collection that's wholly unique to him. Tightly sprung in unreleased cuts and dubs, it's sharp-tailored document of where 130 bass music is at in the UK right now. From the lean groaning two-step shuffles of Hybrid Theory's "Tempering" via the warehouse-battering tubular bass and twisted vocal flexes of Adjected Deleted & Scullious's "Enemy" via the murderous grumblings and bounce-bass badness of Fogg & The Bumpy Fool, Kilner's so on point right now he sleeps on a bed of nails. Sharp.

Artillery (Hybrid Theory remix) - (3:19) 134 BPM
Review: With momentum gaining on every bass-heavy release, the Tuffster steps up to the currently on-point Four40 with "Artillery". With a dark-but-not-dangerous UKG silky finish, it belies its militant title and offers something that lends itself well to a much wider audience beyond the front row murkers. Hybrid Theory's remix, meanwhile, is straight up toxic trap business. If you ain't thugging by the end of it, you need to take a long hard look at yourself.

Review: Just recently, Midlands bass duo Hybrid Theory dropped their anthemic "That's What It Is". Now they're keeping the heat on with a left hook of a follow-up EP of remixes. There are four interpretations here - a grimy garage growler by Flava D, Kissy Sell Out delivers a dirty house grinder laced with a techy fizz and Grime wraps things up with a deep and low urban snarler.

Without You By My Side - (4:39)
Review: Midlander James Vine, aka Enigma Dubz, deals in tough, straight up, party-rockin' beats. Now he's back following a recent split EP with Sub Antix with his own solo release and it's a banger. "Fresh" features filthy post dubstep chugging bass and a messy 2-step swing. ""What Must I Do" is all heavy wobble craziness and an infectious hands-in-the-air female vocals. Finally things end on a head-nodding, sinister vibe with the menacing electro-dub of "Without You By My Side".

Wuxi Riddim - (4:53)
Review: Despite sharing its name with a Christian record label in the States, Birmingham's Four40 only really pray in one church, one with a soundsystem that boasts bone-rattling subs. Their latest signing, the mysterious Cloaka, is certainly all about the bass: this EP features bass so brutal and low it's positively subterranean. "Don't I Know You" features a low rolling bassline and eerie chants, "Booty Chatter" boasts harsh, stamping riddims and extra wobble on top, "Konkle" again centres around a hard, stamping kick but is more sparse and finally "Wuxi Riddim" is all about the voodoo beats.

This time they're loaded with three powerful rounds with "Mind Games" leading the charge with its aggressively sassy and sweaty warehouse garage vibes. Royal Flush takes the role of compiler on this one, pulling in some scorchers from the likes of Soulecta, ZeroFG, Jack Junior, Tuff Culture, Earthnut and of course Royal Flush himself. There are a couple of tracks here we feel really hold their own amongst a stacked line up, with Pavv's classic sounding '3210' being one of them, alongside 'Guilty Twitches' from Ozwald and the choppy vibes of 'Love Is Coming' from the legendary EL-B.

The newfound interest in the deeper side of things is kept up on "How We Go Down" which features buzzing low bass and tough house beats. Review: With their influences ranging from chart-baiting house music to skippy garage and deeper moods, Nu Era stride forth on their debut single for Four40 as representatives of the West Midlands scene. "Give It All" screams crossover appeal with its canny mix of vocals, strings and chords precision placed for maximum ear-worming, while the "Bass Mix" brings a much ruder underground twist on the track. "Came Into My Life" rides a more electro influenced beat but keeps the cheerful melodic elements and chipmunk vocal slices present and correct, leaving it to "Source" to bring a techno edge to proceedings with its nasty synth line and strict 4/4 jack.

Review: Big, booty-shaking bass squelches that seem to seep out the walls and crisp, retro claps announce the arrival of this year's hottest house party-starter. Jacking and jerking with the arrogant strut of Birmingham's bright new stars, this release is gritty and filthy enough to satisfy the most underground of dance addicts, while keeping a severe line when it comes to on-point dancefloor etiquette for those with more clean-cut style. The even more stylish "Drop That Ass" with its perforating dancehall beat and mercenary-dark synths turn nightmarish atmosphere into something well worth staying until closing time for.

Under Ground Girls - (5:04) 130 BPM
Baiah - (5:13) 124 BPM
Review: This is the follow up to the first Attitude record released last year and sees Lewis Beadle aka veteran producer El-B deliver four killer underground cuts. "Love is Coming" resounds to dark stabs, frequent spin-backs and an insistent, spiky rhythm. Its spiky drums have echoes of classic 2-step, but the production is tighter, more techno-focused. "Memories" is a different proposition; this time, the drums swing looser and provide the ideal backdrop for a soulful vocal sample and evocative organ riffs. On "Under Ground Girls", Beadle turns his focus to raw garage, but this time the horn samples and rough dub beats call to mind Tony Humphries rather than Twice as Nice. Rounding off the EP is "Baiah", a smooth deep house track, where Beadle uses thumb-clicking percussion and rich chords to showcase his soulful side.

Let Me Down (Nu Era bass mix) - (5:07) 128 BPM Hot
Let Me Down (JD Reid remix) - (3:45) 66 BPM
Review: For their latest release, the Midlands' finest, Four40, have secured a bit of an anthem courtesy of label stalwarts Pete Graham and Chris Lorenzo. Recruiting the geezerish vocal tones of another label veteran Jamie George, "Let Me Down" is an insanely catchy deep houser based around a repetitive dubby guitar lick and George's infectious naive melody. In other words, a hit. Elsewhere Nu Era go for bouncy big room wobble while JD Reid goes in the opposite delivering a mega slow T(rip) & B late night jam.

Fatality/The Edge
Fatality - (4:33) 128 BPM Hot
The Edge - (4:20) 126 BPM
Review: Midlands bass duo, Hybrid Theory, were only recently up in the dock on trial for their murderously killer low-end frequencies. Seems that they must have got off on a technicality as they are already back out and ready to offend again. This new split single features two typically uncompromising productions. "Fatality" features knife-sharp hi-hats, buzz saw bass and positively lethal drops a plenty. "The Edge" meanwhile boasts skippy breakbeats, merciless bass bounce and even some string samples just to shake things up a little.

Review: South Royston are a UK duo who have already released on labels like Ministry and MadTech. They've been working on a new collaboration with the mighty Skapes and "Sound Of Our Soul" has been hyped on Lowsteppa's Rinse FM show. Now we get a chance to own this beast of a tune, all rolling low-end rumbles, hissy hi-hats and skippy drums, ourselves. Remix-wise Golf Clap up the toughness for a stern garage thumper, Mad Villains get deep and soulful for their stoner mix and Fish delivers the most interesting mix here - a leftfield ghetto jam with brooding carnival rhythms.

Review: Such was the dancefloor decimation caused by Hybrid Theory's recent crowdpleaser King Kong Riddim, they've decided to do it all over again! "King Kong 2.0" is a souped-up accelerated version of their anthem that now manages to merge tech-house, ominous orchestration, hysterical vocal samples, 4x4 bassline grooves and hip-hop beats. Wow!

Review: Now we all know very that there's only one kind of work that's any good, and it's not the kind that finds us sullen faced on public transport every morning. Here Decibel teams up with Slick Don to reiterate this universal truth via the medium of pounding peak time ghetto-ton, coming across like Oxide & Neutrino's effervescent younger siblings in the process. The remixes continue to up the rump/bounce ratio with Hybrid Theory's wobble-heavy 4 x 4 remix being the hard to beat Goliath amongst these heroic Davids.

Suck Fake & Daniel Brooks - "Fuck 'Um Deep" - (6:07)
They Love - (6:45)
Review: Coventry upstart Ryan McCarthy has been making his presence felt on the UK bass music scene with a sharp twist on house music that keeps its finger well and truly on the contemporary pulse of low-end testing 4/4 groove. This latest offering for Four40 Records makes all the right moves for mutually assured club destruction, throwing a snappy vocal hook on top of subby bass swells while the beat moves with a restrained intensity even as the garage swing takes hold. "Why You Messing" sports more of a New Jersey groove over which the full-bodied elements take hold, from pitched up vocals to live drum triplets that widen the straight-up beat. "Fuck 'Um Deep" manages a crafty blend of ghetto house and minimal techno in the vein of Marc Houle, not least defined in the snaking arpeggio that rises and falls through the centre of the track, leaving it to "They Love" to whip out a Chicago inspired heads-down jack-fest of the highest order.

Review: All aboard the remix express! Four40 follow up last month's b-boy two-stepper from IKK and Slick Don with four sparkling reversions. Pedro 123's re-imagination strips the original back into a plinky plonky trap attack that comes in both vocal and instrumental forms while KSH add much more of a bashy grime riddim. Next up from them, they join forces with the wonderful Deadly Habitz, who supplies us with five potent UKG heaters. First up, 'Are You Dumb', sampling a classic Jammz vocal with smooth percussive slices, alongside the sweeping bass LFO's of 'Falling 4 U' and nostalgic chord expressions of 'So High'. Following that, 'Stay True' deploys some incredible vocal stutters and hard hitting horn stabs, before we round up on the sweeping subs and electronic vocal lines of 'Your Love'. Awesome work.

War Cry - (4:37) 129 BPM
Review: There's throbbing bass aplenty on the menu when Paul Lawrence and Andy Garrett get together with this EP for Four40, which finds the pair fusing techno atmospherics with rude garage styles to create a potent floor-filling blend. "Apocalypse" works around a snappy breakbeat pattern which buffets along the heavy-wobbling b-lines, while "Fire" is a more devoutly swung and shuffling stepper to inspire a wealth of uptempo gyrating, aided and abetted by choice vocal licks and tripped-out breakdown sections. There's no let up for "War Cry" either with its own blend of tight drums and gut-busting low end honed for the hottest part of the night.

"You Heavy" sasses with spacious drums and breezy keys, setting the foundations for the much darker, mischievous scuttle-bass "I Need You", but the real highlight here is "Brown Sugar"; fusing jazzy keys with a lolloping, housier rhythm and a series of waspy bass tones. Sweet.

Slick comes across like Newham Generals on just a weeny dose of helium. Spitting with a smidgeon of sing, IKK's 4/4 garage riff is the perfect bed for Don's bravado (so perfect it comes with an instrumental). The compilation of course features some of the biggest releases from across the breadth of Four40's incredible catalogue of content, from the likes of Hybrid Theory, I Killed Kenny, Pavv, Limita and more, condensing ten years of musical progression into one extended tape.
