Turntabala EP
Turntabala - (4:25)
Rock The House - (3:56)
Amen Danger - (5:17) Hot
Review: We're still recovering from the drop that was Suckfake's recent EP on Four40, and now they follow it up with three deadly UKF leaning weapons from DJ Spookz. "Turntabala" takes the essence of dub and combines it with incisive laser bass and rolling snares, while "Rock the House" places chopped vocals and insistent stabs over deep low end. "Amen Danger" might be the pick of the bunch, with it's chopped up amen breaks combined with devastating bass blasts.

Review: A big new tune from Liverpool bass man Lucent, with some killer remixes tied in on this release from Four40. After a killer detuned spoken-word sample, Lucent drops a mad yet threadbare rhythm that's all the funkier shorn of big stifling basslines. The mighty Tomb Crew craft an upfront raver on their remix, while Kozee's mix is a revelation - generating a warm and tight funk thanks to some distant beats and soulful keys.

Review: Rising Leicester bass duo Everyman have already received support from the likes of Benga and Skream. This latest EP should raise their profile even higher with it's exceptionally well-produced sheen. Title track "Take The Block" is high-octane bass music pure and simple; "No Doubt" meanwhile is very retro house and certainly riffs off 90s classic "To Be Real" by Ladycop. "Player" recalls vintage R&B, but distorted out of all recognition by helium voices and stop start beats. Finally "Let It Up" is a dubby, percussion-heavy instrumental.

When You Go - (4:57)
Jiggly - (5:17) Hot
Review: This latest cut from Four40 features Beacon on the production duties with some quintessentially hybrid bass music that spans electro, juke and UK Funky. The title track is led by a massive snare, which gets tempered by the bright and bold synths and R&B vocal hook. It should slot nicely into any number of styles, much like the more sparse Funky vibes of "When You Go". With restrained bleeps and a subtly booming sub, it's just left to the vocal looping to give a nod to the juke styles of recent times. "Jiggly" meanwhile plumps straight for the tech-house floor with a fat, driving bassline and rigid beats.

Review: A huge new release on the Four40 label sees Regality kill it with an exceptionally fly mix of 808 kicks and snares, soulful vocals and distant harmonies on the excellent "Celebrate". Review: It's always a thrill for us to see the Four40 imprint make a return to releasing as they here unveil three tracks of UKG inspired fire from the Scunthorpe based sounds of Deadly Habitz. We begin this one with some fragrant flare as 'Circles' kicks off the EP with a soulful punch, working smooth vocals in amongst skippy garage drums and fluttering subs. 'Rumours' follows with a more stripped back structure, still packing some serious weight with its subtle bass pressure however. Finally we take a dive into 'Chemical Love' which rounds up the 'Black & Blue' EP in style, using spacey atmospheric and wooden sounding percussive stabs to bring a real sense of space to the table.

Review: There is nothing we love more than a tasty original garage release, and that is exactly what the dons at Four40 have delivered here as they unveil this fantastic new single from Wes Thomas. This one is a real stripped back masterpiece, focussing primarily on its stunning lead vocal, allowing the minimal drum work and concise melodic structure to provide a perfect base below. We are also lucky enough to be gifted a fantastic rework of this one as Tuff Culture steps forward on remix duty, overhauling the track with a more up-beat drum structure, scattering the vocal in classic UKG style.

Review: We are very excited to see the vibrant sounds of Tuff Culture return here as they unveil a very exciting three track project alongside the legendary Four40 imprint as the third edition of their 'Elements' series. We are blessed with three high energy UKG rollers, the first of which goes by the name of 'Molecular', packed with jig-inducing rhythms and chord stabs. Next we dip into the more random shuffles and glitchy twists of 'Quarks'. Before finishing up the project with a dive into the silky tones and wavy textures of 'Electrons', which adds an additional touch of class to an already stacked EP project.

Review: Hybrid Theory returns to Four40 with his most substantial work to date, the five track Tropics EP. The title track more than lives up to its name, an infectious combination of bright UK funky synths, soca rhythms, heavy bass and tropical melody, "Top Boy" combines thick square wave bass with deep house stabs, while "Grime Alarm" is as raucous as its name suggests, switching up the energy between sections with crafty rewinds that lead into hands in the air rave moments. "Pita" strips things back with its simple combination of rattling percussion and deep subs, while closer "I Believe" takes a rolling flex and combines it with glittering keys and expert vocal manipulation.

Watcha Gonna Do (Jay Robinson remix) - (4:17)
Review: Don't worry, Inspector Gadget's theme tune is safe from the bootleggers for another day. Hybu's material is completely his own. An upbeat, in-your-face flavour, it's unique amongst his French contemporaries, too. Two tracks and one release in total, the title track is a bumptious, bouncy number that switches from pacey squelches to soothing, synth soul with true style. Wooing both the house and electro crowds will be no problem with this particular gadget. "Watcha Gonna Do" follows, a full throttle bottle of party with a riff so squidgy you'll want to cuddle it - this is perkier than a box of Viagra (and a million times longer lasting!) Jay Robinson completes the set with a dramatic twist; stomping dubstep with eerie rave vocals anyone?

Review: Tomb Crew step into the limelight with their aggressively funky strain of house music on Four40 - a label most vividly known for their veritably UK approach. Title track, "The Sermon" is classic mashup of the highest calibre, with grizzly Jamaican vocals all-round and one belter of a bassline - watch the radio edit for an ever bumpier mixdown! "Wack Flues" is an instrumental of the same track, whilst Crown Duels put in a fine performance of the original - nutty low-end - along with Famous Emo and his grimed-out version and finally, Lucent's own vision - a monstrous, bass-driven squelcher! Hold tight, Serocee and Rubi Dan on the vocals!

Review: Edinburgh producer Hostage has no intention of losing the heat garnered from a host of important releases on labels like Herve's Deep Thrills and Black Butter. The newfound interest in the deeper side of things is kept up on "How We Go Down" which features buzzing low bass and tough house beats. Wuxi Riddim - (4:53)
Review: Despite sharing its name with a Christian record label in the States, Birmingham's Four40 only really pray in one church, one with a soundsystem that boasts bone-rattling subs. Their latest signing, the mysterious Cloaka, is certainly all about the bass: this EP features bass so brutal and low it's positively subterranean. "Don't I Know You" features a low rolling bassline and eerie chants, "Booty Chatter" boasts harsh, stamping riddims and extra wobble on top, "Konkle" again centres around a hard, stamping kick but is more sparse and finally "Wuxi Riddim" is all about the voodoo beats.

Enigma's beats are the perfect balance of heavy presence and eerie melody while allowing enough space for Screama and Trilla to trade melodic bars with each other. The remix-list is mind bogglingly good with all flavours catered. From slinky, well-polished two-step (El-B) to haunted house trap (DJ Cable) via savage breakbeat garage (Filthy Vicars), Four40 have curated a very generous package that will suit every shade of bass addict.

Review: Big, booty-shaking bass squelches that seem to seep out the walls and crisp, retro claps announce the arrival of this year's hottest house party-starter. Jacking and jerking with the arrogant strut of Birmingham's bright new stars, this release is gritty and filthy enough to satisfy the most underground of dance addicts, while keeping a severe line when it comes to on-point dancefloor etiquette for those with more clean-cut style. The even more stylish "Drop That Ass" with its perforating dancehall beat and mercenary-dark synths turn nightmarish atmosphere into something well worth staying until closing time for.

It's all about the party here on "Skanks", mercilessly so, especially with the legendary grime MC Flowdan on vocal duties - there won't be a dancefloor left alive after this incendiary fusion of footwork, tropical and hysterical rave is dropped. Just in the (unlikely) case it doesn't rock your world, there are two extra mixes supplied - Hybrid Theory deliver a slower, wobble-heavy housey version, while the Enigma Dubz mix defiantly keeps the classic dubstep sound alive!

Network delivers a deep and dark bassline house version, pitching Flowdan's vocals down into the murky ether, while I Killed Kenny builds on the original's frenetic style with a rave-infused UK funky bomb, something mirrored on DJ Cable's similarly furious remix. Lol Gurlz meanwhile offer a moody and atmospheric take filled with syncopated, head-nodding drums, while Toni Moretti's remix offers much the same but with trippy hi-resolution percussive tones. Spitting with a smidgeon of sing, IKK's 4/4 garage riff is the perfect bed for Don's bravado (so perfect it comes with an instrumental). Elsewhere we find tech-minded tropical ("Crossover") and stripped back bleep bashment ("HS1").

Review: There really does seem to be no stopping the oncoming storm that is the Four40 release catalogue, as they continue their fiery start to 2021 with yet another system smashing three-tracker. Enter: NLMT, who delivers some melody-driven bassy goodness from start to finish, kicking off with the jovial synthesizer runs and energetic drum processing of 'Rollercoaster', leading into 'Mashup', a spooky UKG roller, focussing more so on unusual sound design and an eerie sense of harmonic structure. Finally, 'Disaster' sees NLMT enter the much more rowdy side of his character with a raucous display of synthetic abandon, giving us a lively finish to this depthy selection.

Review: It's safe to say that the Four40 team appears to have kicked off 2021 with the same vigor that they closed out 2020 with, marching forward with hard-hitting release after hard-hitting release. Next up from them, they welcome Cooky, who delivers three powerful 4x4 originals, kicking off with the euphoric synth design and big room bass booms of 'Over' which really does set us off in style. Next, the pace is increased and the subs pushed further as the more stripped back LFO lines and crunchy drum arrangements of 'My Mind' give us a taste of something a little different, before the more melodic twists and colourful vocal slices of 'Chops' put the final touches on a very well thought out three-tracker.

Review: If you weren't keeping an eye on the magnificent movements of Four40 Records in 2020 then you must have had your head buried in the sand, given their incredible catalogue growth. This brand new three-tracker from Jaikea adds another spicy box to their cupboard of treats as we kick off with the lethal bass manipulation and dancefloor-filling drum slaps of the title track 'Rinse It'. This is then followed in similar spirits with 'Informa', a wibbly-wobbly 2-step skanker, alongside the more high pitched synthesizer slaps and carefully layered vocal samples of 'Yard Gyal' to round us out in style. It's a punchy kick start to 2021 to say the least!

Review: Yet again we find ourselves exploring the incredible discography of Four40 Records, one of the original and most long standing front runners across the UK bass scene, who are back at it again unveiling this fiery new four track delight from Tony Tokyo. We begin with 'Absolute', a super groovy garage roller, complete with classic chord progressions and super colourful drum expansions, with the disco-inspired drums and moogy synth designs of 'Kamikaze' following in hot pursuit. We become doused in nostalgia next as 'My Room', combines silky vocals with hip-shaking rhythms to take us back to the early 00's, before the more experimental rhythmic manoeuvres and vocal chops of 'Rhythm Of The Bottle' see us out in style.

Review: Well, when we saw this title land in the store we were as surprised as anyone to see that Four40 Records, one of the most active and exciting UK bass labels across the full breadth of 2020 has just turned 10 years old. This is a pretty outstanding achievement, for a label that is still at the forefront of it's sound to this very day. The compilation of course features some of the biggest releases from across the breadth of Four40's incredible catalogue of content, from the likes of Hybrid Theory, I Killed Kenny, Pavv, Limita and more, condensing ten years of musical progression into one extended tape. We also get to hear a bag of exciting new exclusives from the newer breed of the Four40 roster, including music from The Phat Controlla, Blakk Habit, Lucas Maverick, Gemi, Badger, Patrick Kane, Yozhi, George IV and more. What an incredible way to round off the year!

Review: We thought it was going to be the case that Four40 kicked up another storm before the year was out, and we have been proven right as we jump into this top notch compilation project, primarily assembled by the UKG legend that is Smokey Bubblin B. We can see this one's quality just by perusing the tracklist, as we see top names such as Mistakay, Kastle, Mind Of A Dragon, Royal Flush and more all make their way onto the project. It in fact covers such a wide range of garage music it is difficult to define simply, from the minimal, skippy designs of Perception's 'You Make', to the more futuristic bass instrumentation and design of Tuff Culture's 'Carbon', with Doctor Nick's inspired remix of 'Mind Slip' by SMOAD being a particular stand out.
