Review: Art of Tones fantastic collaborative EP with live disco-jazz outfit Chatobaron, last year's 'Flight of the Comet', have been given the remix treatment. The EP begins with a trio of takes on 'Ban The Disco'. Crackazat steps up first with a UK garage-influenced deep house revision rich in musical colour, before Bruno Hovart dons his familiar Patchworks alias for a luscious, all-live take that sits somewhere between deep disco, jazz-funk and organic house. If you're looking for a little more energy, check Paul Cut's driving, Rhodes-laden revision of the same track. Elsewhere, the 'Raw Analog Funk Remix' of 'Pendant Ce Temps La A Vera Cruz' is a languid, warm and richly organic deep house treat, while Tiurbojazz's take on 'Flight of the Comet' is a slow-motion, sax and piano-laden head-nodder with added Balearic sunshine.

Review: Basile De Surenses' last single, released in the summer of 2023, was an undeniably on-point exploration of the classic disco-house sound. This time round, he channels his inner early '90s raver on a trio of energetic, sweat-soaked workouts. Basile De Surenses first joins the dots between breakbeat-driven hip-house and bass-heavy warehouse workouts on the breathless and brilliant 'AAA', before pitching down a familiar hardcore and jungle break to techno tempo on the wide-eyed, hands-aloft rush of 'BBB' (check the raw rave stabs, looped vocal snippets and boisterous bass). To round things off, the young French producer reverts to jacking 4/4 beats on the excitable and gurning 'Leto Doesn't Want U To Get In Da Club'.

Review: Bruno Valette AKA Ten Fingerz has been part of the Frappe family since the very start, featuring on the Paris-based imprint's debut release - the multi-artist 'Fete en L'air EP' back in 2020. Here he offers up his second solo single for the label (his first dropped in 2023), a typically tasty three-track effort. On opener 'Loopy B' he doffs a cap to both classic 'French Touch' filter disco-house and the muscular, thickset Chicago bump of Derrick Carter and DJ Sneak, before opting for a deeper, warmer and more classic-sounding disco-house sound on 'Dizco Ztrings'. To round off a rock-solid EP, Ten Fingerz offers up the jazzy Rhodes riffs, spoken word samples and driving deep house beats of 'Our DNA'.

Review: In June this year, long-serving underground house producer Fabrice Viel AKA ChocoGinger passed away at the age of 51. To pay tribute, Frappe Records is offering up this EP from Prophetic Soul, a collaboration between Viels and Tee Two that previously released a small amount of music on Los Angeles label Salon Phonics. First up is 'Pyramid', a deliciously hypnotic, early morning deep house chugger that makes great use of a weighty bassline and a sampled guitar lick from a classic disco record. 'That's It', a woozy and gently wayward slab of leftfield, disco-tinged deep house, follows, before we're treated to the dual delights of 'U Understand', a musically expansive, string-sporting slab of starry dancefloor beauty, and the stirring late-night delight that is 'Capacity of Love'. The best possible tribute, all told.

Review: Naux - real name Clement Hiernaux - is hardly prolific, with three solo singles and a handful of contributions to split EPs (including one on Frappe back in 2021) being his only releases since 2017. That said, he's clearly got talent and a head full of interesting ideas, because his latest four-tracker is quietly impressive. Check first sun-splashed opener 'Jeez Car Destiny', a filter-sporting chunk of disco-tinged chunky house positivity full of Bernard Edwards style bass, clipped guitars, soaring chords and summery melodies, before admiring the vintage Cassius-meets-nu-disco flex of 'Let Your Juay'. The EP finishes with two takes on title track 'Parade Nauptiale': the tough and catchy 'French Touch' filter funk of the original mix, and the Stardust swirl-and-pump of the locked-in and sweat-soaked 'Vaudafunk Dub Remix'.

Review: Grahb yourself a cooling drink, dust off your dancing shoes and head for the dancefloor: Frappe's "summer 2023 selection" is here. It's naturally a sweltering, sweat-soaked affair, with all four tracks perfectly suited to shuffling in the still, summer air below a blanket of stars. Greg Van Bueren kicks things off with the lolloping, low-slung and loose-limbved vocal house shuffle of 'Coming Atcha', before Baka G delivers sun-splashed positivity, killer deep house grooves, rich organ stabs and layered R&B vocal snippets on the superb 'Uh Oh'. Ten Fingerz' 'Paris Sun Kiss' effortlessly joins the dots between French touch headiness and classic Parisian jazz-house, while Lone Dog's 'Straight From The Underground' is a swirling, saucer-eyed, disco-fired house treat.

Review: Fresh from a three-track collaboration with Darren Marshall on Jack City, James Juke serves up a solid solo EP on much-loved Parisian imprint Frappe. There's much to enjoy throughout, from the groovy-but-chunky headiness of opener 'Who Said' - a funk-fuelled loop jam that makes great use of samples from what sounds like an old disco-funk ham - to the synth bassline-driven, piano and sax solo-sporting excellence of EP closer 'Whatchu Came To Do', which has a more energetic, sweat-soaked feel. Sandwiched in between you'll find the smooth and soulful disco-house joy of 'Got That Loving' and the extra-chunky, funky house pleasure of 'All About That Funk'.

Review: Although a globally popular genre whose popularity waxes and wanes, jazz-house does have a spiritual home: Paris. It was here where St Germain and his collaborators brilliantly blended deep house grooves and jazz instrumentation in the 1990s. It's also now home to DJ Darker, who here pops up on Frappe with a four-track 21st century update of the classic St Germain sound. The EP smartly builds in energy and excitement throughout, with the Parisian producer jogging between the piano solo-sporting, sun's out glory of 'After Jazz Club' (a saucer-eyed classic in the making); the hip-hop sampling jazz-house joy of 'Real Fonk', where potent trumpet solos catch the ear; the loopy, hands-in-the-air rush of 'Piano Call'; and the expansive, Kyoto Jazz Massive-goes-sunshine house goodness of 'Time For Groove'. Formidable feel-good vibes... recommended!

Review: Ten Fingerz's debut EP, "Fingerz Wurk," delivers a powerful and funky electronic experience with three tracks. Drawing inspiration from Chicago, Detroit, and Paris, the record blends various styles to create a unique sound. The title track, "Fingerz Wurk," combines elements of hip-house and acid with catchy vocals and a modulated bassline. "Jeune Rave" features early Detroit techno-style synth stabs alongside an acid-saturated loop and thumping drum programming, delivering a dynamic listening experience.

You Must Pay - (6:30) 126 BPM Hot
Review: While many of Frappe's releases come from producers based in the label's home city of Paris, they do occasionally look further afield for inspiration. That's what they've done for this release, which boasts two tracks from long-serving (and popular) Toronto producer Demuir. He begins in confident fashion on 'Eyah Eyah', a colourful deep house bumper rich in squelchy synth-bass, effects-laden female vocal snippets, rising electric piano motifs and swirling chords. He opts for a more loopy and locked-in sound on 'You Must Pay', where spoken word snippets and jazz style solos rise above a thickset groove crafted from beefy beats and samples from an old jazz-funk gem.

Waited Long Enough (feat Cansu Kandemir) - (6:36) 127 BPM
Review: Hot on the heels of well-regarded collaborative releases on Likeminded and Heat Up Music, The Checkup brings his brand of hot-to-trot house music to Frappe for the very first time. He starts in typically forthright, peak-time ready fashion on 'Wintergarten', a bumpin', energy-packed big room house number in which sampled, chopped-up diva vocals, loved-up chords and jazzy electric piano solos ride a weighty analogue bassline and sweat-soaked drums. Vocalist Cansu Kandemir makes her presence felt on 'Waited Long Enough', an organ-rich fusion of deep house, two-step garage and classic-sounding U.S house that's as warming and picturesque as it is rolling and club-ready.

Ban The Disco (Drum Tool) - (5:20) 126 BPM
Review: French veteran Art of Tones AKA Llorca teams up with Parisian jazz-funk outfit Chatobaron, and 'Flight Of The Comet' is a very apt EP cos the results are out of this world! 'Ban The Disco' (and its accompanying Drum Tool remix) and 'La Chatte Au Baron' operate at the jazzier, classier end of the disco spectrum, while the title cut with its stop-start rhythm and the lounge-tinged 'Pendant Ce Temps-La A Vera Cruz' probably sit more comfortably under the jazz-funk umbrella, but what all five tracks share is a musicality and sophistication that puts most of the week's other releases to shame. Very fine fare indeed.

Review: Fresh from serving up the highly attractive For The Soul EP on Frappe, Loic Peltier AKA Brooklyn Baby returns to Frappe for a joint release with fellow label regulars Shortcut (AKA Yan Lahellec and Marc Royer). The results are undeniably impressive, with the trio expertly exploring their love of thickset, loopy, groovy, jazz-flecked house haziness. To kick things off, they make merry with rubbery, beefed-up beats, hip-hop vocal snippets, life-affirming disco loops and jammed-out electric piano solos on 'Let Your Body Move', before reaching for sun-splashed piano motifs, elastic double bass, snaking sax snippets and crunchy drums on classy jazz-house workout 'For My Heat'. Arguably best of all though is the rolling, warming, eyes-closed brilliance of classic-sounding peak-time deep house workout 'Summer Heat'.

Peltier dips the tempo a little and reaches for the hip-hop vocal samples on the jazzy, loose and languid deep house number 'Watch What You're Saying', before paying tribute to his favourite U.S city on the bumpin', chunky and bass-heavy deep house retro-futurism of 'NYC'.

Review: We're not quite sure what the loose theme is for Frappe's latest multi-artist EP, but the material on show is well worth further investigation. Scene stalwart S3A provides a peak-time ready chunk of sparkling, densely layered sample-house full of rubbery slap-bass, drowsy chords, chunky house beats and twinkling melodies ('Work For NYRK'), before laying down an even weightier, horn-heavy house stomper ('Slump'). Elsewhere, Ten Fingerz joins the dots between chunky, peak-time house, hip-house and Blaxploitation funk ('Rue du Fonk'); Basile De Surenses drops some disco-tinged, soul-fired vocal deep house ('Get back'); and Alastair Lane reaches for the glassy-eyed 'city pop' synths on the gorgeous and sublimely squelchy 'Tokyo Love Affair'.
