Review: Following pretty good - but arguably overlooked - outings on Mango Sounds and Fibanicci Recordings, Kristoff MX has become the latest member of the Furious Mandrill family. His contribution to their re-edit focused Mandrill Cuts series is on-point and quietly impressive, with both tracks being well worthy of your attention. He opens with 'FAWL (From Africa With Love)', a not so subtly tooled-up rearrangement of an old Afro-disco gem rich in elastic bass guitar, vibraphone style motifs, gnarled disco-funk guitars and punchy horn lines. 'Nigerian Flava' is a slightly looser and more relaxed revision of what sounds like a post Afrobeat boogie number of the sort that was very popular in Lagos around 1983.

Review: Mexico's The Velvet Stripes return to their regular home of Furious Mandrill with two cuts that fit the label's self-stated "tropical disco and Afrodisiac funk" remit down to the ground. Up first is 'Mamba Flavour', a hypnotic, summer-y funk/disco roller with a vocal that sounds like it could be of either West African or Central American origin. That's followed by the trumpet-led, guitar-flecked and organ-sprinkled 'The Soul Rhythm', which is not dissimilar in overall approach but doesn't have quite the same infectious energy - think throwing shapes for 'Mamba Flavour' and lounging by the poolside for 'The Soul Rhythm'.

Review: Greek party-starter C Da Afro seems to save some of his best material for Furious Mandrill, a re-edit imprint that's become one of the most reliable in the business since it launched at the tail end of 2016. For proof, check "You Can't Stop", a bounding, beefed-up take on a horn-heavy disco-funk track rich in parping trumpet blasts, elastic bass guitar, jammed-out electric piano motifs, filtered guitar riffs and heady female chorus vocals. Arguably even better is "The Jam", whose intoxicating mixture of jazzy guitar solos, far-sighted synth riffs, dense disco drums and bubbly nu-disco style electronics should put smiles on the faces of all but the most miserable of dancers.

Review: For the fourth edition on Mandrill Cuts, they are honoured to include Mexico City's Sould Out (FDL/Masterworks Music) to the label roster, with two dancefloor jewels that will burn up the club. "Cosmic Wayo" is a nice serving of congo fuelled Afro-disco-funk, filled with harmonic trumpets, happy vocals and a rhythm section to make you get up and boogie. While on "The Magical Mystical" they take on a classic by a certain main with one thousand fingers, taking you back to a golden era in disco with its majestic piano chords, sexy rhythm guitar licks and classic vocals - plus some newly added cosmic FX all bringing some magic to the release. Good time guaranteed on this one!

Review: Having recently impressed via a tidy two-tracker on the effervescent Dikso label, fast-rising producer and re-editor Levantine makes his bow on Furious Mandrill with two more party-starting treats. First up in "Wilde", a heavy but suitably swinging revision of a blue-eyed disco-funk jam bristling with jaunty horn lines, elastic bass guitar, glassy-eyed vocals and chunky, house style beats. "Body Work", meanwhile, is similarly bouncy but slightly more driving in feel, with soaring disco orchestration and high-register vocal snippets being smothered in filters while weighty beats bob along beneath. It's disco-house, Jim, but not as we know it.

Review: Edit imprint Furious Mandrill has barely put a foot wrong since debuting back in November 2016. The label's latest hot-to-trot missive comes from C Da Afro, a talented Greek producer and re-editor who has spent the last five years releasing party-starting grooves on some of the rework scene's most lauded labels. He kicks things off with "Only", a rework of a killer Nigerian boogie favourite smothered in glistening new pianos, meandering synth solos and cowbell driven disco drums. It's a tasty and tactfully execution revision, all told. "Serious Jam" inhibits similar sonic territory, serving up a sparkling tweak of another boogie-era Nigerian instrumental rich in jaunty piano stabs, elastic bass and glassy-eyed dancefloor positivity.

Review: Given that Furious Mandrill is based in Cancun, we were rather surprised to learn that the label has not previously released any edits or original productions by Mexico's most storied disco artist, Hotmood. This rock-solid two-tracker, the eighteenth volume in their Mandrill Cuts edit series, sets the record straight. First up is 'Positive Energy', a gently beefed-up slab of disco-funk heaviness rich in psychedelic organ sounds, bold bass, Afrobeat horns and clipped guitars. Arguably even better is 'Carnaval', a wilder and sweatier revision in which mazy Hammond lines, sharp funk guitar riffs and rising horn lines leap above a weighty, fill-heavy drum track. The edit is certainly accurately titled, as it feels like a bona-fide, carnival-ready party-starter.

Review: Greece's C Da Afro comes to Mexican label Furious Mandrill with two appropriately tropical-sounding cuts. 'Do It Steady' opens with percussion and pipe sounds before busting out a heavy 70s funk bassline which is mirrored by the horns and strings, giving the track something of a Blaxploitation soundtrack vibe in the early stages before it morphs into full-on disco. The accompanying 'Loopo Braziliero', unsurprisingly, is more Latin in feel, with the horns well and truly to the fore. Not sure if these are original productions or re-edits, but both are well suited to sweaty summer nights regardless.

Review: Leandro Sokur is perhaps best known for his work with fellow Argentinian producer Nelson Cuberli as NFC & Key Sokur. Here, though, he's flying solo as he serves up a brace of (what are presumably) Afro-flavoured re-edits for Mexican label Furious Mandrill. This writer is no expert on African music and has never claimed to be, so the source material if any for this particular installment will have to go unidentified, but 'Ay Ramon' is a fairly lively, rolling affair with an upbeat, high life kinda feel, while 'Afro Babies' drops the tempo just a notch and has a slightly groovier swing, so is probably the pick for non-specialist floors.

Review: Furious Mandrill have long done a neat line in disco and funk with an exotic, world music-y twist and that's exactly what you get here. 'Vampires In La Habana' is, as you might expect, a very Latin-leaning affair, with densely layered percussion and parping trumpets that I'd call mariachi-esque did the title not specifically reference Cuba rather than Mexico! It'll be a little "busy" for some, production-wise, but floors that rock to Latin rhythms should find it very amenable. The accompanying 'Snake Charmer', meanwhile, puts a flute firmly front and centre, but wisely eschews the kind of cheesy cod Indian-isms you might be fearing...

Review: The two tracks here are called 'Saxalicious' and 'Congalicious', which gives you a little bit of a clue as to what they might sound like! 'Saxalicious' is up first and looks to vintage African funk for inspiration, though whether the distinctly 80s-esque sax line (which is applied surprisingly sparingly) comes from the same source or has been added by C Da Afro himself isn't clear. 'Congalicious' treads similar ground, but leans more to the funk rather than the Afro side of the equation, and as such could have slightly broader dancefloor appeal - if you'd told us it was a long-lost Brass Construction joint, we'd have believed you!

Review: Furious Mandrill's re-edit series reaches its 22nd installment with this two-tracker from Mexican duo The Velvet Stripes, AKA Leo Cid and Abraham Barrett. 'Sanga Sanga' and 'Si Como Na' both draw on Latin music sources, which is definitely not this writer's area of expertise, so the originals will have to go sadly unidentified this time out. But the former is a dense, midpaced, warm-up friendly kinda cut with a rousing male vocal supported by call-and-response BVs, while 'Si Coma Na' is a livelier but still quite gentle lil' hip-swayer that rocks a sing-song vocal and mariachi trumpets.

Review: Mexican label Furious Mandrill describe their musical remit as "tropical disco and Afrodisiac funk". That gives you a good idea what to expect from this latest installment in the 'Mandrill Cuts' series, which features two tracks from Puebla-based producers Leo Cid and Abraham Barrett, better known as The Velvet Stripes. 'High Disco' reworks 'Disco Hi-Life', a 1979 cut from Nigerian disco/Afrobeat star Orlando Julius; that would suggest 'Mi Nena', with its blend of Latin, Afro and disco influences, is also a re-edit, though what it's a re-edit of, this writer sadly couldn't tell you! Expect both to be big with the likes of Messrs Peterson, Scruff and Brewster.

Review: The latest tasty missive on fast-rising re-edit imprint Furious Mandrill comes from NFC, an Argentine DJ/producer who has previously released original material on Thunder Jam and Onrika. Both tracks here are marked out not only by the tidiness and respectfulness of the re-edits, but also the quality of his source material. "Rico Coco" is an authentic original Latin disco gem, where hazy female vocals, jaunty piano lines and hard panned guitars wrap themselves around a wonderfully rich, mid-tempo groove. "Nigerian Feel", on the other hand, is a killer rework of a slightly better known, West African influenced disco-funk gem, where flanged Blaxploitation guitars and sweaty horn solos combine with a guttural male vocal to create an intoxicating, floor-friendly mood.

Review: "A blend of Latin roots and Afro-funk with house music" is how Mexican producer Superflat describes this EP, and who am I to argue? There's certainly a very Cuban kinda vibe to 'Caribbean Booyah', while Superflat looks closer to home for inspiration on the lounge-y, mariachi-infused 'Chula Vista'. But he's chosen his lead track well because while both are very playable it's 'Madagasikara' itself that's the must-have, dragging 'em onto the floor with its crisp beats, surging bassline and chopped n' looped vocal snips before the trumpets and sax arrive to push 'em over the edge. File under 'energy booster'.

Review: Mexico's Furious Mandrill bring us a three-tracker from Kristoff MX, AKA Christopher E de los Monteros from Quer?taro, who judging by the sound of this EP has clearly been digging on a lot of old African disco and funk records from the 1970s. 'Black Mamba' centres around a chanted vocal that sits atop a bed of fluttering guitars, while the more gently-paced 'Awake' is all rolling drums, brass stabs and a sing-song vocal in an unidentified language. Closer 'Manduke' then takes us into slightly more straight-up funk pastures, making it potentially the best bet for non-specialist floors.

Review: "Ain't nothing wrong with disco, it goes along with funk!" So sang Cameo on 1979's 'Energy', which gets reworked by the mysterious The Message here as 'It Takes Me So High' - fine sentiments, we're sure you'll agree, and a fine way to kick off this latest three-track re-edit slab from Furious Mandrill. Elsewhere on the EP, 'Give It Up' draws on an unidentified boogie-era cut with a male vocal and pianos that recall Patrice Rushen's 'Haven't You Heard', while the bold n' brassy 'Love In The Desert' reworks Rie Murakami's obscure Japanese disco gem 'Sahara' from 1984. Good stuff.

Review: Furious Mandrill bring us an EP from Mexican producer Superflat that packs three quite different-sounding tracks. The EP opens with 'A Night In Cancun', which can just about be filed under tropical/Latin disco - but only just, because in truth it has as much to do with traditional Mexican sounds (mariachi, corrido, nortena etc) as it does with 4/4 kicks and mirrorballs. The Cuban-infused 'Radio Habana' moves closer to "proper" disco territory, but the standout for yours truly here is 'Kingston On Acid', an almost Eastern-tinged deep house groove with a preacher-style vocal and mucho 303 squelch n' squeal.

Review: Argentina's Alexny drops a second set of re-edits of world music cuts. First to get the treatment is the late, great Astrud Gilberto's 'Agua De Beber' which - some four months on from the great lady's passing, and 58 years on from its original 1965 release - gets respectfully chopped and looped atop a ponderous 4/4 backbeat on a track that'll help introduce that amazing voice to new generations. The source material for the other two has us beat but 'Que Me Quieras' is a lively, uptempo Latin funk/disco shaker while the Afro-Cuban tinged 'Oye' comes the closest to straight-up disco of the three.

Either way, 'Que Pasa' is, unsurprisingly, a Latin-flavoured affair with dense layers of percussion and a one-line vocal, 'Conmbe' is a somewhat funkier affair with a full male vocal in an unknown language and some energetic guitar work that hints at highlife, while finally 'Donme' is a deep, shufflin' groove with choral vox (again in an unidentified tongue) and probably the best bet for non-specialist floors.

Review: The Velvet Stripes are a contemporary duo who hail from Puebla in Mexico... which surprised us, because on first hearing this EP we were sure it just HAD to be a reissue of some obscure Japanese disco nugget from the late 70s. Which is, of course, another way of saying that if you're after some fresh but authentic-sounding disco grooves with the kinda off-kilter feel, Latin-y/lounge-y flourishes and hints of bubblegum that disco from non-Anglophone countries often tended to have, you'll struggle to find much better this month than the 'Sugar Disco Baby EP'.

Review: Argentina-based producer Alexny has long been one of Furious Mandrill's most reliable and prolific producers. Over the years he's delivered both white-hot re-edits and similarly high-grade original productions. This EP, the first in the label's 'World Series', sits somewhere in between, with the publicity-shy producer combining elements of (mostly obscure) old tunes with his own instrumentation and grooves. He begins strongly with the dusty rocksteady-goes-deep house chug of 'Jah-Jah', before breathing new life into what sounds like a tropical disco-funk workout on 'Start The Music'. 'JO Jojo' is a shuffling, percussion-rich bounce based on (we think) a breezy Afro-funk number, while 'Dostum' is a heavyweight, thickset romp that features electrified Middle Eastern instrumentation and Arabic vocals.

Review: A warm welcome back to the Funk District, a label-hopping re-editor and producer who's previous solo single dropped way back in 2018 on Masterworks Music. He begins his first Furious Mandrill outing with "Stuck On The Line", a loopy chunk of warm, sun-kissed disco house rich in jazzy piano solos, bluesy vocal samples and chunky, bass-heavy grooves. He breaks up the bits a bit more on "Melas" - think heavily chopped and looped Mexican disco-funk samples, rolling disco beats and heavy organ riffs - before joining forces with Sokur on the beefed-up tropical disco-funk of "The Horn". Finally, the Cancun-based artist reaches for the dub delays on a warm and woozy disco-house excursion rich in elongated pads, clipped guitars and bustling beats ("Abstract Love").

Review: The clue's in the title here, as Argentinian producer Alexny (Ivan Alexis Podwiazny) returns to his semi-regular home of Furious Mandrill with a four-tracker that draws on Middle Eastern and Indian music for inspiration. While there are those who'll find the very idea problematic, there's much to enjoy here, with the first three cuts looking to traditional music while 'Jawani' seemingly draws on the sitar funk of the 60s and 70s. The timing's pretty neat, too: the sub-continent has really been starting to emerge on the international house and disco scene in recent years, so consider that zeitgeist nailed!

Review: After impressing late last year with The Four Seasons EP, Hungarian duo The Magic Track returns to Furious Mandrill with more high-grade re-edits for those who like chunky beats, heavy horns and hedonistic disco flavours. The pick of a very strong bunch is arguably celebratory disco romp 'Panama Life' - all impassioned male vocals, fiery horns, filter sweeps and rubbery bass - though tooled-up Afro-disco opener 'Equality Pushes it Close'. Elsewhere, 'My Gentle Love' is a Clavinet-sporting chunk of rolling disco-house excellence, and 'Sweetest Goodbye' is a bass-heavy version of a sensationally summery number that should get plenty of plays at outdoor events in the months and years ahead.

Review: This year Alexny has been busy... and we mean really busy. We make this outing on Furious Mandrill - his first disco-focused EP for a fair few months after a run of deep house cuts - the producer's seventeenth solo set of 2019 - an astonishing figure when you think about it. We'd argue that the headline attraction is opener "Que Beleza", a percussion-rich, beefed-up take on a horn-toting Latin disco workout, though some may be more attracted to the breezy, piano-sporting positivity of samba disco edit "Do Sol". Elsewhere, "Deixa A Tristeza" sees him craft a filter-heavy house chugger from bits of a joyous old samba jam, while "First Pay" is a sludgy loop-house head-nodder rich in jazzy guitar licks and twinkling melodies.

Review: These days, C Da Afro seems to be pushing the likes of Rayko, Sunner Soul and Mitiko hard for the coveted title of "most prolific remixer and re-editor". The Greek producer is once again in fine form on this Furious Mandrill outing, offering up a quartet of cuts that are funkier than a gurning gibbon after a night out with the Goodies. Our pick of a very strong bunch is sturdy, filter-sporting disco-highlife revision "Highlight Groove", though sweet, string-laden opener "Coconuts" and the colourful, synth-laden tropical disco number "Tropical Boogie" push it close. Kwaito/Afro-boogie number "Zooming", which closes the EP in fine style, is also worth a listen.

Review: Fresh from an impressive contribution to a recent multi-artist EP on Editorial, Cancun's Fernando Mendoza once again dons the Funk District alias and serves up some more funky dancefloor heat. First up is the bounding Afro-disco/Afro-funk fusion of "Freaky Stuff", a rubbery but decidedly heavy version of a familiar favourite, quickly followed by the filter-sporting Afro disco-funk bounce of "Do It Right". Arguably even better is "Soul Vibration", a booming, full throttle, house-friendly tweak of a slamming disco-funk belter. Bets of all, though, is closing cut "Tin Lin Non", where subtle house beats underpin a rearranged version of a steamy Afro-funk/Afro-disco cut rich in glistening guitars and undulating bass.

Review: The Magic Track bring us four tropical disco productions that pack in a welter of influences from disco, jazz, world music and more. 'Bonsai Care' places sitars, African-style flutes and vocal chants and a jazz saxophone line over a dense, tribalistic backbeat; 'Pambolero' looks mostly to Latin jazz and flamenco for inspiration, but has hints too of hi-life and Afrobeat, sounds which also inform 'Disco Croco' and closer 'Yerba Mate', the latter throwing all sense of restraint to the winds as the Hungarian duo chuck in various animal/zoo sounds for good measure.

Review: Argentina's Ivan Alexis Podwiazny, better known as Alexny, returns to Furious Mandrill with a four-track EP here. 'Glass Of Beer At Bogota' is a light n' breezy affair with fluttering guitars and a female "aa-aaah" vocal taking centre stage, while the title track opens with a simple looping percussion groove, then builds inexorably into a dense slab of Latin-flavoured funk as it progresses. The insistent disco-funker that is 'Kizi' - the pick for yours truly - then ups the tempo somewhat and sports snatches of spoken, Spanish-language male vocal alongside its exuberant brass fanfares, while completing the set is the more laidback, tropical-flavoured 'Commander'.

Review: Greek disco producer Giannis Mpizas, better known as JB Boogie, comes to Mexican label Furious Mandrill with four suitably Latin-tinged workouts. Opener 'Pina Colada' places barrio-style "jungle music" shouts atop a looped-up funk guitar riff reminiscent of (but not sampled from) The Jackson Sisters, while 'Cocktail' has a slightly more lounge-y feel, with brass to the fore. It's the horns, too, that make Spanish-vocalled EP standout 'Cuba Libre' - that riff will get under your skin like scabies! - before the EP's closed out by 'Amaretto', which like 'Cocktail' has something of an easy listening vibe. Schmaltzy, but tons of fun all the same.

Review: Describing themselves as "disco humans", Mexican outfit The Velvet Stripes are a re-edit and original production crew with a firm focus on the dancefloor. "The Funk Call" not only marks their debut for Furious Mandrill but also the collective's most high profile release to date. There's much to set the pulse racing throughout, from the Latin house/nu-disco fusion cheeriness of opener "Rumba, Samba, Rambo" - all sleazy chanted vocal refrains, sub-bright piano stabs and heavy percussion - to the filter-sporting, bass-heavy disco revisionism of closing cut "Instant Funk". Elsewhere, "Tony Grey" is heavy, effects-laden rearrangement of an old Afro-disco/Afro-funk gem by, you guessed it, Tony Grey, while "Dancing Shoes" is a particularly sleazy and weighty take on a throbbing, Italo-disco era dancefloor favourite.
